Called these guys when I was on my way over to Half Moon Bay on a Tuesday afternoon. They said they had plenty of bikes available for rent and to come on down! I was in and out with a rental bike and guidance on which direction to head in for a nice ride within minutes of arriving. Super quick and easy experience. Paid $25 plus tax for about 3 hours of ride time (all that was left in the day). Got in a great 16.75 mile ride and turned the bike in just as easily as I rented it. Note that all available rental bikes are single speed and you reverse the pedals to brake (not handle bar brakes). I was reluctant at first but the trail is easy enough and a single speed bike was you need! Oh and they'll let ya borrow a helmet if you forget to bring yours ;) read more

I have never felt as welcomed and appreciated at a surf shop as I felt here. The selection was really good and they had plenty of sales. Came after a surf sesh with their rental ( which are very reasonably priced!) and they extended a courtesy to let me rinse off my wet suit and bag it up. This is a great place for all your surfing needs. The owner, I wish I knew his name, is super nice and really knows his stuff. I'm a new surfer and I picked up my wetsuit (on sale for $130) and, later, wetsuit boots ($45) here. We talked about surfing and he even offered to give me a lesson some time. He told me a great place to get a cheap beginners board. I think that says a lot about him, because he was willing to give business to another company just to help me out. He rents boards for $25/day or $20 for an afternoon and wetsuits for $10 (if I remember correctly). Now I just stop by to say hello and pick up a cool sticker ($4) or something when I'm in the area. Wow, what a super board shop sits right on Hwy 1 at halfmoon bay!! We first stopped by to see if they sold slippy, a product to help get you into your wet suit. He didn't carry that product but did have a small slick bag to use to help get your suit on. The owner even mentioned we could save money and use a plastic shopping bag also. We bought the slick bag from him. It worked wonders getting my grandkids wet suit on. We went back again to purchase a boggie board from him. Again great customer service right up front. Had suggestions for saving us some money. He gave us the product sticky bumps. Used to get a good grip on the board. We will use this shop for all our board and surf needs while in halfmoon bay. He has a great supply of just about what ever you might need, for purchase and rentals. I saw an "Ugg" brand sign outside the shop and stopped in to see if they had any Ugg slippers on sale, since that brand has got good reviews. The owner was very pleasant and helpful. The store has a nice variety of clothing and it was good to be able to support a local business. read more

Rented 3 bikes and a tandem for the day. Biked to HMB and to Maverick which were in opposite directions, about a 10 mile round trip. The shop was super accommodating and nice. Customer service couldn't have been better. They let us ride the bikes in the parking lot and provided helmets for the ride. The shop is pretty neat too. There's a ton of selection of clothes and surfing/bike related items. Would definitely come again. read more

My California moment. Gorgeous day. Heat wave in SF. Grabbed my bike and drove to Half Moon Bay. Tires were flat from sitting in garage. Stopped at gas station. No go. OK, I'll rent a bike. Driving down HWY 1 i see HMB Board shop with bikes outside. Screech. Stop. Tell the fellow I want to rent a bike cuz my tires are flat. "Let me see if I can fix it. I have a compressor." Presto Whamo Tires fixed. I was sent on my way and nothing asked for but my smile and "Awesome!" This is how we roll in No Cal : ) Not so $5. coffee, charge for every minute. Love it. Thanks! Wetsuit rentals are $10 bucks. Foam board rentals are 25 bucks, it's for beginners, the board and fins are softer then normal ones... The foam pink boards are foot shorter (8 foot) then the yellow foam boards, (9 foot).... Give them a try they do tend to get heavier as your session progresses as they soak up water, making it easier to catch waves, you can't do very much on these foam boards but its a good way to learn. I will say, they will get heavier... much heavier... I've taken friends out and they unfortunately after a day of surfing have very sore and heavy arms, and I on several occasions had to carry my board and theirs back to the car.... :( read more

Stopped by here on the way home from the nearby Yelp Elite Holiday party. Surf and board shops are notorious for "small backpacks." Im always in search of small Dakine backpacks that are perfect to carry your wallet, cellphone and other purse things thats easy to carry and hold while shopping or going on an outdoor trip. Found 2 bags perfect bags that were perfect cheap prices! Most stores online sell them for $20 more! Yay for saving money! Customer service here was awesome and friendly! read more

Stopped by on our way out of town while visiting friends in HMB. Darren greeted us and was very engaging. He asked us about our visit and we traded surf stories and photos. The store is beautiful and inviting, we purchased several items including sweatshirts and hats. I can personally say I love my zip up Mavericks sweatshirt with the fleece lining and my son wears his Mavericks hoodie all the time! As many have mentioned, the customer service here is amazing. Even though there was only one staff member there and like 8 customers he finds a way to check in on you and help you out. Super knowledgeable about the breaks, the current conditions, and has lots of advice about all the gear. This is the type of place where you look for an excuse to make a stop. read more

I'm a local and I want to love this place, but will NEVER go back again. There are two people who appear to be owners/managers: a blonde surfer guy and a tall Brazilian woman. SUMMARY: The tall Brazilian woman can be impatient, bored, and sometimes rude... just terrible customer service for a small, local business person IMO. On several occasions she has been borderline rude and truly unhelpful (and pushy). She seems impatient at times and really does not seem to care about returning customers. One one occasion she was actually kinda nice, so it's obviously not an everyday thing. DETAILS: I spent over $600 on wetsuits, body boards, and equipment. She was a bit pushy and salesy, but not too bad. She convinced me to buy a more expensive wetsuit than I was planning to buy. I believe that the guy helped me with the fit. He was fairly insistent that the large was the best fit, even though I always wear medium. After some conversation they convinced me that it was the right size and I trusted their experience. As it turns, the suit leaks through the top and I get a cold rush of ocean water down my back everytime I get water over my head. A couple of weeks later the guy told me to bring it back and try it on for him (seemed fair). A week later I came back with the suit, but he was not there. The Brazilian woman was talking on the phone--not business--and made me wait for 5 minutes. During her conversation she barked at me in front of other customers that my wetsuit was dropping sand on her merchandise (it was really not a big deal). After she hung up, I explained the situation and before I could finish she interrupted me with a loud "Sir, that is not possible, we NEVER sell wetsuits that are too big..." and continued to lecture me loudly in the store. I tried hard to be nice and keep it civil, but she kept repeating, quite loudly, that I was wrong and this cannot happen (i.e. they sell wetsuits too large). She then tried to sell me a hood to cover the back of the suit. The phone range, she answered it, and I walked out quite upset. I will never go back. Later, I discovered Aquaon in San Mateo and found fantastic customer service and a much larger selection of equipment. read more

In spite of giving me a weight complex because they gave me a children's wetsuit instead of a women's they were still very friendly. They were very apologetic over the wetsuit mixup. When I returned the gear, they asked a bunch of questions about how the day went...much nicer than I've ever been treated in Santa Cruz. It cost about $65 for 3 wetsuits, 2 boogie boards, and a surf board. They only rent foam boards here. It's a pretty small shop, so I'm not sure how the selection is for purchases. read more

My husband knows that when I arrive home with a bag from here he's in luck. Truth be told this isn't the only good board shop on the coast but it is one of the best and the owners are awesome and long time pals with my father in law. I came here referenced by a different bike rental store that didn't have any available because of upgrading issues. Already bummed to make a detour I walked in to be greatly welcomed. He was very friendly, straight to the point and we got the job done. Either I got one of the last bikes or there wasn't many to begin with but regardless, service was great. Great service and price! We were able to get 6 bikes upon walk-in. All worked great and we loved our day of bike riding on the Coastside Trail and exploring Half Moon Bay. Giving 4 stars vs. 5 because we could not get a hold of anyone on the phone. It just continued to have an outgoing message that no on was available. Just started surfing a couple months ago, I've rented from HMB three times. Prices are reasonable - $10 for a wetsuit, $25 for a board - for the day. Seems to be the average for renting in the area. The customer service has always been awesome - I've ran into two people here, both cool dudes - super helpful about finding the right wetsuit size and even went out of their way to break out a new rental board because the rental boards they had at the time were a little beat up. The people who own the place are really nice...but the prices are out of control. if you go down the road to pacifica you'll find much better prices on pretty much everything. i kind of kick myself for not being more diligent for not shopping around. I probably won't go back to this shop again...i would rather go for better pricing with people just as friendly. we'll see...maybe i'm stuck in Half Moon Bay and can't get to another shop @ the moment. read more

I preface this by saying that I give this place 4 stars in the context of HMB. The best shop in the area though is definitely Arrow on Mission in Santa Cruz. They have a good selection of the usual items/accessories, and are reasonably helpful. It helps to have an idea in mind of what brand/model you want before coming in. They often seem to be lacking sizes, so call ahead to confirm they have what you want in your range. You pay a premium for the in-store experience: generally10-15% more than you would at Swell.com (where there is a further 20% off if you are a Surfrider member) It is necessary though to get the correct sizing. Now that I know the fit, I will buy online from now on. read more

Horrible customer service. My friend called and reserved a beach cruiser for Sunday. We go to the store on Hwy 1 and the only bike they had was too big for her. She told them how short she was when she phoned. The kid sends us down to the other store in Harbor Village and it's freaking closed!!!! WTH??? Don't take a reservation, don't take a credit card number if you don't plan on following thru and don't say "no problem". This "business" is horrible. read more

We had to wait almost 10 minutes to get any help at because the person running the shop was outside chatting and we almost had to leave without purchasing the stuff we wanted because of the delay. Furthermore he implied that we shouldn't or couldn't be skim boarding and also turned me away from surfing. I'm disappointed Ad this is the first shop in the new area that I have moved to and was really looking forward to learning about all the ocean activities I ow have at my hands. I hope in the future they do not discourage people from going on the water because water is life. read more
