Came here for lunch before the CMU football game. First of all, loved the location. Very nice historic downtown area. The menu was quite large and the atmosphere was very nice. Just had lunch with friends here and we all love this place and their foods. Probably we came here around noon and it's CMU homecoming this week, so the place was pretty crowded. This is one of my regular spots. The food here is usually consistent. Most of the time the sandwiches are great. On occasion the meat is too fatty and greasy but not often enough to stop me from frequenting them. The soups are yummy. The desserts are yummy. The chips are some of the best I have had. They are always busy. The staff is always buzzing around. They are about business, they do their job, no time for small talk or smiles. Just expect to get what you ordered the way your ordered it. For me, the two most exemplary features of this place are its kind, hardworking staff and its generous hours. I ate here twice during a recent visit, once for lunch and once for an early morning breakfast run. At lunch, the number of sandwich options sent my brain into overdrive, and I just did the create your own variety. The counter staff were efficient and pleasant in taking my order, and made a sincere effort to get things out as quickly as possible. My sandwich was decent and huge, but the turkey was very salty, and the melted cheddar was more on the processed side. The next morning, I appreciated being able to get a solid, if under seasoned, breakfast egg wrap at 7am. Still, no question, this is a far better option than the corporate sandwich shop down the block, with more local patina to boot. read more

Max & Emily's is one of those places that I miss the most about Mt. Pleasant. I come here for lunch EVERY TIME I am back in town. There is something for EVERYONE here... with about 100 different sandwiches, it's impossible not to find one you'll like. I brought my boyfriend here when we went up to MP for the weekend, and he's hooked now too :) P.S. Their bakery items are to die for too... So many sandwich & wrap combos to choose from, everyone in our group raved about their sandwich selections. Anything made with the luscious smoked Turkey is a winner, as well as the French Dip. We've been out of the area for a while and just stopped by and ate there. I figured I'd give an updated post 'cuz Covid, and discovered I'd never given an earlier review. So... Terrific place with lots of good quality, and fairly priced, food. Definitely (in _normal_ times) a fine spot to park yourself and family for a scrumptious meal. At this time, because of Covid, they're takeout PLUS a limited number of outdoor picnic tables, so I urge anyone in the area to patronize them and give an extra thank you as they persevere. It's just okay. For me, they lost stars for not having homemade soup. They also don't do a homemade veggie patty. For the price, I expect items made in-house. This place was so cute. They made sure to express to their cooking staff that I had celiac and my food needed to be prepared very carefully. My fiancé got their special and said it was amazing. Had a coupon to this place but wasn't worth it. Got the #36 the Usual which was supposed to have brisket in it. First of all there was BARELY any meat on the sandwich and half of it was fat and gristle. At $9.45 I expected a better sandwich. Soup was fine. They only had 1 variety available. Sad. Max & Emily's is the best lunch spot in Mt Pleasant. Conveniently located in downtown and in the summer/warmer months there is outside seating. The staff is always super friendly and helpful. There's a sandwich for every sandwich lover. My favorite by far is the Ruben. It's a classic that I've tried at lots of places, but Max & Emilies does it just perfectly! Also, don't forget to try a slice of the cheese cake. That is one of their specialties as well. I remember living in the dorms at CMU and going down to the market late at night just to get a slice of their cheese cake. Delicious! read more

What an amazing place! I think I have a new destination whenever I visit my sister at school. Never would've expected a place like this after the way she talked about Mt Pleasant. Max and Emily's is right in the downtown area, easily accessible with plenty of parking nearby. The cafe itself is pretty decent sized, with newspapers laying about the cafe for someone to read and a nice display of their available pastries. Their menus are a bit intimidating, since they have something like 100 different sandwiches and such. They also have burgers, salads and much more. The sandwiches are half standard fare, half stuff I have never seen before. That really made me smile, since I have been on a trying new stuff binge lately. They also have a daily special, which you can get with a bread bowl and soup. The sandwich I got was the Shaner, combined with a bread bowl and broccoli cheese soup. Unfortunately, they were out of bread bowls, but we were promptly refunded the difference and I was given bread as a side to the soup. And let me say, this was some damn good soup. Some of the best broccoli cheese I've ever had. Just the right amount of salt, the right amount of cheese. YUM. The sandwich was even better to boot! I haven't had something this good in a while... The Shaner consists of smoked turkey, swiss cheese, russian dressing, coleslaw all grilled on rye. Incredible. If you're in Mt Pleasant and don't want your typical college food, this is a nice deviation from the norm. Definitely worth a stop by, even if you're on your way through town. read more

This was the overhyped local joint that pretty much every small town has. It's been there forever and they make a good sandwich. But they don't live up to their reputation. I've been three times, each on separate visits to Mount Pleasant. Each time I waited in line for about 10 minutes, which was made better by reading all of the unique sandwich creations they have. Still, 10 minutes plus seems a bit long for a lunch time rush. Not to mention the 15 more minutes I waited to eat. Again, doesn't ruin it off the bat but doesn't help their quality. I've eaten three different kinds of sandwiches here, each with it's own flair. That's truly what saves this place- the creativity of the sandwiches. I've tried something new and different every time. However, the quality of the ingredients leaves you wanting. The deli meat tastes more like Oscar Meyer than you'd expect from a local joint like this. And most heinously, you just get a bag of cheap Lays chips. Not the worst experience each time, but it's just not much for a local sandwich place. read more

Max and Emily's is my favorite place to go time and time again. It seems like just a simple sandwich shop when you walk in, but as soon as you get to their chalkboard wall covered in about a hundred multi-colored crazy sandwich names, you know something great is about to happen. It's great for breakfast and for lunch, my personal favorite for breakfast is the B.O.B (bagel with egg and bacon and cheese). Somehow it taste so much better here than it ever has before. Also, they have really delicious coffee for only 94 cents that I crave when I'm not there. For lunch, I would suggest either the grilled cheese (not your typical grilled cheese), or the "That Other Sandwich" (there's no way to describe this one besides delicious). It's a great place to bring a family, no one will ever come into Max and Emily's and say they can't find something that they want. There's also tons of food besides just sandwiches if you're not in the mood for that. The people who work here are always kind and happy. If you're in Mt. Pleasant, this is the best place that you could possibly come to eat. Drive right past Applebee's or Culver's and make your way to Max and Emily's for lunch, trust me, you'll be very glad you did. read more

My only complaint about Max and Emily's is the crappy artwork on the walls that they are trying to sell. Ha-ha! Max and Emily's has a large selection of coffees, sandwiches, and desserts. I LOVE Max and Emily's! Such a great hidden gem in Mt P! Definitely a must stop if you are in town. They have sooo many options. As a vegetarian, I love that they have options for me! I love the Tom Pesty sandwhich. There are some great people working there! Throughout the pandemic they have faced many obstacles with mandates, employee shortages, and many food and meat shortages but they never fail to exceed my expectations on how they handled it.
