I've heard about Max & Mina's and over the weekend, this place kept calling my name. It was my first time here and the guy serving the ice cream was nice and guided our decisions of which flavor to pick. My husband and I got two separate cups with the following flavors: strawberry, fruity pebbles, spongebob and cookie monster. The strawberry and cookie monster were good. The fruity pebbles tasted a bit stale and the spongebob just had too much going on. This place is a little gem right under your nose!! The decoration is so awesome the wall is filled with different cereal box logos!! The guy who was working behind the counter was super friendly I honestly didn't know what flavor to have and he took his time and was super patient while I tasted at least ten different flavors trying to figure out which one I wanted the most of lol!! By far one of the BEST ice cream places i've ever been to. Came here for the first time and Bruce and his brother were so welcoming. I was able to try as many ice cream samples that I wanted and they were all delicious. I love how unique and different each ice cream they had were as well as how the place is decorated. As Jenn C. was driving me home from an early Sunday wedding, the idea to get ice cream, after stuffing ourselves silly at a party that consisted of an intense spread at cocktail hour, 3 courses, and a quadruple serving of dessert, was a brilliant idea. Yep. We both opted for a single scoop of sour cream toffee which was a generous portion. I secretly wished for little crunchy bits of toffee but the delicious combination of creamy and tart put me over the edge. The rest of the night would consist of me surrendering to the couch. We sampled the beer and pinot grigio ice creams which tasted just as the beverages would except... creamier. Fighting the urge to try other flavors, I took home a pint of the dark chocolate for another day. The semi-sweet dark chocolate flavor was spot on but the texture was off putting. Mixed in with the creaminess was a sticky, almost slimy texture that wasn't welcomed in my bowl. The same texture was found in the sour cream toffee which I thought was a result of the sour cream or caramel mixed in. I have never once seen anyone who works there wearing gloves. I saw an employee blow his nose and then scoop ice cream. I am sure it happens more often that the one time I have seen it happen. Most of the novelty flavors I had read about weren't available- such as the Lox and Ketchup. I wound up taking the cupcake and rose petal flavors. The cupcake ice cream was terrible- pieces of dried up cupcake and some pieces that tasted like butter and sugar. The rose petal wasn't good either- tasted like flower water. The guy that worked there was friendly but he was talking to himself and was mostly oblivious and very spaced out. While the novelty flavors are interesting the quality is terrible. If you're used to high quality/artisanal ice cream you will be gravely disappointed. They don't seem to use fresh ingredients for ice cream; it's more generically concocted like Ben & Jerry's. I was in the Flushing area and decided to drop in and experience their famous strange flavors. It's a small ice cream shop in a tiny plaza. Smaller than it appeared in the specials on tv. The pictures and stickers decorating the walls inside are fun to look at and add a nostalgic feel to the shop. The staff was FAR from friendly. My sister asked for a sample and they were very irritated. Im sorry, but when you have flavors like corn on the cob and cookie monster...I want to try a small bite on a tiny wooden spoon before I commit to a whole cup of something I may not like. I was glad I did sample the corn on the cob, because it was awful. I can't imagine anyone preferring that flavor over chocolate chip cookie dough. I was afraid to ask for another sample of a different flavor (the staff looked like they would throw the ice cream at my face). The prices are a bit extreme. For an ice cream shop far away from Manhattan charging 5.70 for two scoops in a cup is a bit ridiculous. The ice cream is not made of ingredients that are overly special and it's not even all natural. My sister got the cookie monster, which was good, but not anything to brag about. I ended up getting nutella ice cream. It was tasty, but not worth a trip to the far reaches of Queens, the prices, or the rude staff. I guess the problem is that fame has gone to their heads. I give it 4 stars for it's creativity. A few friends of mine came to visit and we went out to dinner. After dinner they wanted some ice cream. Someone wanted Haagen Daz but there wasn't any nearby us so I took out my handy blackberry and googled ice cream in Queens and Max and Mina's was the first on the list. With it being in Flushing I didn't have hopes that it would be open when we were heading there but my friend called and they said they close at 1AM. We were like sweet and decided to go there. The atmosphere is really fun. The walls are plastered with really colorful things and I believe they were featured on the Travel Channel or The Food Network. They had so many different flavors. I been there twice and the menu changes. The first time we went there my boyfriend got the Cookie Monster (blue cookies and cream ice cream) and I got the Pancakes and Syrup (it is what it is with vanilla ice cream). Both were really good ice cream. The second time I went I got the pomegranate but they let you try the different flavors they had. I saw lox flavor of course I would try it even though it sounded really disgusting and yes it's pretty gross. It tasted like a bunch of lox in vanilla ice cream. If you like lox then get it. It's just not my thing. They also have flavors like horseradish and your basic general flavors like vanilla, strawberry, chocolate. Definitely go try it out! read more

I saw this featured on a show on the Travel channel, and seeing how it was near where I grew up, I had to make a trip with the family in tow. The range of flavors offered here are amazing. The store seems to be the product of an evil mad scientist who decided to redeem himself through making ice cream, and the world is better for it. The workers are always gracious about giving samples, so don't just stare at the wall menu and try to figure out what it would taste like in your head. The only bad thing I can say about this place is that it isn't open on Saturdays, to observe the Jewish sabbath. If I had the time and training, I would love to open the Korean version which is open all day, every day, fatigued employees be damned. My dad comes to NY about twice a year and he's always got a place he wants to try that he saw on TV. Max & Mina's was on the list when he came to visit in April. Before I get to the ice cream I must admit this is 3 bus rides from my house now that the Q74 has been cancelled. That being said it is worth the trek, even from the city. Max & Mina's has a cute, kitschy decor and the server was super friendly and talked to my dad for a long time since it wasn't busy. The flavors vary from kooky to clever to normal. It's fun to sample the different flavors. I had the red velvet cake. The ice cream is very rich & creamy & a decadent treat. While I was enjoying my ice cream I read several of the framed articles on the wall, which filled the whole wall. 'Beer and Carmel Nuts', 'Pizza', 'Lox' and 'Cotton Candy' were just some of the not-so-regular flavors you can expect to sample at Max and Mina's. (They will provide you with a small taste sample so you can decide which of their many flavors to choose from - but it won't be easy!). We walked out with pints of Blueberry Cheesecake, Oreo Cheesecake, Chocolate Fudge and Pistachio flavors. We'll be going back for the 'Dirt Ball'! They've mastered the exact taste of beer. -Vanilla Caramel: great balance between vanilla and caramel (lots of both)--not too salty or sweet. -Nutella: has a hazelnut flavor--not really Nutella tasting but I love hazelnut ice cream -Oatmeal raisin: this is exactly like an oatmeal raisin cookie with bits of raisins. -Chocolate PB: finally! A good amount of peanut butter. This is filled with Reese's chunks. -Honey Cinnamon Clove: I settled on this instead of oatmeal because I think it has a cinnamon nutmeg mixture that made it less sweet. It was filled with spices and was absolutely delicious! FINAL VERDICT: Not as creamy as the Brooklyn Ice Cream Factory but their ice cream is top-notch. They really are able to recreate flavors that you wouldn't normally taste in ice cream--and, they taste pretty darn good. The store itself is super cute with so many plaques and colors and the beach chairs outside are pretty authentic. Where was the Garlic, Horseradish, Potato Chip Fudge, Corn on the Cob, and Ketchup? The ice cream is good, as ice cream will be, the prices are reasonable, and the decor is somewhat interesting, but the shop is small, and the ice cream freezer is opaque - I prefer when all the flavors are spread out in a pretty display under glass. Contrary to what other reviews may indicate, corn ice cream is nothing new--it's a top seller in South America and you can get a lovely corn gelato from Cones in the West Village. Alcohol-flavored ice cream is nothing new. I had Guinness ice cream in New Hope, Pennsylvania nearly a decade ago--and frickin' Ciao Bella mass-produces multiple wine sorbets for sale in grocery stores and bodegas all over. Indeed a mom and pop ice cream shop, there's nothing like it on this side of town. As soon as you walk in, you'll notice a plethora of random stickers, vintage and modern. Take note of the ceiling also, which is plastered with black & white photos. Along the right wall is the menu of all available ice cream and yogurt flavors. Just to the left of the menu are the prices, most will probably order a single scoop ($2.95) or double scoop ($5.70). Also available are pints ($7.50), small shakes ($4.65), large shakes ($4.95), and their tye-dye T-Shirts ($16). There are also 4-5 2-person tables available to sit at, if you're lucky enough to grab a seat. We found ourselves eating in front of the shop because the place was filled with 10-15 kids. Who doesn't love ice cream on a hot summer day? There was quite a bit of random flavors available (Sour Cream Toffee, Linzer Tart, Meshugger, Pesto, Herring, Wasabi, Merlot, Cream Cheese, Grass, Pizza, Cotton Candy, Candy Bar Blast, Surprise Surprise Surprise, Cinnamon Babka, Cheesecake Oreo, Bodacious Berry Burst, Babaloo, Noodge or Nudnik, Key Lime Pie, Black Raspberry, Coffee Oreo, Coconut Oreo, Mint Orea, Peanut Butter Oreo, and a whole lot more. I realized I'm not a big fan of nuts in ice cream any longer, and wish I had just gotten two scoops of the Peanut Butter Oreo because it was that good!! Service was a bit lackluster as they ignored us for a while and did their own thing, until they noticed a crowd gathering up in front. The one server had difficulty finding the ice creams and wasn't sure which she was scooping to us, so she had to ask another worker. I'd definitely like to come back here again, but the prices were a bit high and difficult to justify for mediocre portions served. My friend introduced me to Max & Mina's and described it as a cute local mom and pop ice cream shop. There are brightly painted, oversized wooden chairs right outside the store where you can enjoy your ice cream. One side of the interior walls is covered in photos of the shop owner with celebrities and lined with small tables. The other wall displays the ice cream flavors surrounded by fun and colorful bumper stickers/posters. It took a few minutes before someone came out of the back room and welcomed us. He encouraged us to try samples and quickly scooped up generous spoonfuls for the five people in my group. He was extremely patient with us and answered all of our questions. I sampled the following: - Cabernet Sauvignon: the wine flavor is subtle but you can definitely taste it. I thought it was an interesting ice cream flavor but was not tempted to order a scoop (despite my love for wine) - Coffee: I always get coffee ice cream as it is my favorite ice cream flavor. I can confidently say that Max & Mina's coffee flavored ice cream fell within my top 3 favorite from Queens and Long Island. I really enjoyed the strong coffee flavor. - Strawberry: Sweet strong flavor of strawberries, but not as obnoxiously sweet as other ice cream shops. I ordered a single scoop ($3.25) of coffee and strawberry (you can combine flavors) and was surprised by the giant scoops I was handed [probably equates to 4 scoops]. During the summer I go to this ice cream shop about once a week. They always have new flavors that are fun to try and so so good! I bring the chocolate chip merlot to every wine and cheese party I have with my girlfriends and the container goes empty every time. I bring the cookie monster for my friends son and he loves that too (a blue ice cream flavor full of all different types of cookies, the adults love it too!) For those who said they had freezer burnt ice cream, it must have been an odd day b/c that almost never happens. The ice cream is made fresh! I've also never had a problem with the guys behind the counter, they are either young teens who are super friendly or the owners who give you giant portions!
