I went in searching for frozen empanada dough, and Aji Amarillo. The former was easy enough to find (thank you, Goya), but even my Peruvian American friend from Chicago warned me that it's hard to find the Hot Yellow Peppers, critical to the Aji de Gallina dish from her native country that I wanted to make. And sure enough, I couldn't find it after walking all through the store! La Tapatia staff to the rescue: Through a mix of English, Spanish, and pointing-to-pictures-on-my-phone -- the staff made it a mission to help me find the Aji Amarillo. Turns out, La Tapatia had it in paste, in brine, and frozen! Can't wait to come back!

I found many items I wasn't planning on purchasing that I just had to get! I found some delicious kefir, a fantastic selection of teas, jams, cookies, snacks and some interesting sodas. They have a whole row of amazing spices at super low prices! I wouldn't expect a container of that size at one of our local spice shops for less than twice the price! I think there are chick peas prepared 100 ways! I did find a good selection of baklava from the Nazareth Sweets store in Chicago. I've been there in person and the store is nice. While baklava from this region isn't filled with honey (which is my personal favorite), their sugar mixture is still a good sweet flavor. I also found a wide range of halal meats and products. They have many fresh and prepared medjool dates! I have a list of many items to return for as the store's selections made me want more and more. I haven't seen this selection since spending time searching in Chicago, so it's a great addition here in West Des Moines!

If you are familiar with the Des Moines metro the Graziano Bros name should be one you already know. Established in 1912 they are a fixture here when it comes to Italian sausage. The ordering process was smooth and the menu was displayed well. The wait wasn't long. I ordered the fried ravioli (beef filled) with marinara and an Italian Chop sandwich. The Italian Chop is almost exactly what it sounds like. It's served cold. Chopped mortadella, pepperoni, capicola, salami, provolone, tomato, onion, pepper rings, and lettuce. Tossed in a creamy Italian dressing. Served on a hoagie roll. The ravoli was served terrifyingly hot. Lol It's a bold tangy marinara. The sandwich is perfect for what it is. Service was excellent for a truck and typical of when there's a line. Busy. Not much time to small talk. Graziano Bros offers, sausages, cheeses, breads, meatballs, etc. plus dry goods offered in wholesale amounts for additional savings. It's a small grocery store, but they have a lot of everything! Household products, drinks, canned items, frozen items, tons of spices, cheese, meat, sauces, and what I'm always looking for~ fresh fruit and veggies that look really great!! I picked up some cucumbers, zucchini, and ripe plantains this trip, but they also had lettuce, tomatoes, avocados, cilantro, onions, limes, bananas, mangoes, potatoes, and more! The cashier here was very nice and helpful too. Will definitely be back soon for more plantains and to try the mangoes when they're in stock :)
