Looking for a place to grab lunch to go and came across Hungry Boyz. Decided to try two sandwiches and asked if they could wrap the halves separately. No problem. The Big Kahuna Tuna. Well this fish out of water wasn't a keeper for me. The bread is so soft and phenomenal. There was plenty of Tuna on this Big Kahuna, and I added lettuce, pickles, jalapeños, onion, and black pepper. Banana Peppers on the other half. The flavor just wasn't hitting for me. The tuna is like a paste, not dry, but not moist. The veggies were very light and added no flavor. I am not a fan of a ton of mayo, but this sandwich needs a flavor injection. That bread is seriously awesome and I am curious if the wheat hits the same. Would definitely let this fish go. It felt like a can of tuna on bread with a light mayo. The Lost Boyz - Ham, Salami, Turkey, Pepperoni, and Provolone with salad dressing, lettuce, tomato, oil, red wine vinegar, and oregano. The flavors in this sandwich are really good, excellent flavor. The veggies again were very light and the meat in the middle was perfect, but 2/3rds through and the meat is scarce. I couldn't really even taste the toppings. This sandwich hits, but it's missing like peppers. That oregano should bring some flavor. This place has real potential and the bread is solid. Very soft, good flavor, and holds up excellent. Need equal meat throughout and add some toppings, like "Dear Sammich Maker please don't be scared to add some meat and toppings so I can taste it ". They seem to be skimping IMO and for the price point pickles, peppers, and onions shouldn't be an issue. A half a slice of tomato on a half isn't much or enough. Maybe subway spoiled me or that other place in town The Madhatter where they take you to flavor town. This just came up short for me. The service is outstanding and it wasn't very busy for lunch. I would stop again and try some other sandwiches if in the area. Would definitely request more toppings. read more

I had not been here in quite a while. A solid sub sandwich with fantastic service. They have a nice selection of sandwiches and you can choose white or wheat bread. For those familiar with Hungry Hobo, this setup will look familiar. You can dress your sandwich with all the toppings that you like and they have baked potatoes as an option as well. They also have cookies and salad salads available as sides. When you walk in you get in the queue to place your order and then the food is delivered to your table. Food comes out very quickly and Staff is great about checking in on you and picking up when you're done. read more

Just because this place doesn't get enough love... With the reduced hours I often forget about them as an option. But their sandwiches, soups, potatoes, and service are all quality... We stopped here while traveling across Iowa. It was easy to get to from the interstate. Order at counter- good and quick service. I had turkey and ham sandwich and my husband had the #11. Both sandwiches were better than the average fast food subs. I also had the potato salad side which was good. Great, quick lunch stop. read more

It is important to support small local family owned businesses during these new normal times. The sandwiches here are small but enough for a noon quick pick me upper or if you are eating light and in a rush. Perhaps the most important element here is that the sandwiches are made to order with fresh ingredients. I ordered #5 Chicken Salad and #11 A Meat Assortment of pepperoni, ham and beef. A great place to go for lunch. I recently moved to the Des Moines area and this place is close to my office. The service is great. The owner is very friendly when you come in. I have had a couple different sandwiches. The Reuben was great. The regular size is enough even though I got the king size. The #11 was good also. I prefer the Reuben though. The 11 was an Italian type sub. The potato and macaroni salad aren't anything special. They taste like like they are store bought. I have also tried their Taco-tato. It's a russet potato covered in chili cheese, lettuce, sour cream, and tortilla chips. You can have onions and tomatoes on it as well. The taco salad is the same thing minus the potato. read more

I LOVE Hungry Boyz! The Number 8 - Ham and Swiss (Magswiss Hammerson) is my go-to sub. The combination of great flavor and soft bread makes for a unique sub experience in the Des Moines metro. Hidden Urbandale gem. Tried today for the first time, based on a recent Facebook group review. They offer a good selection of sandwiches, hot dogs, and loaded baked potatoes. My wife and I both went with sandwiches and soup (WI cheddar). Soft bread, tasty ingredients, and fresh/crisp veggies. The soup was basic, but delicious with well developed flavors. Friendly service. Walked in and was greeted immediately. There's a nice selection of sandwiches, potatoes, soups, and a few other assorted options. I opted for a cup of Wisconsin Cheddar. While it was nothing special, it did have some nice accents of bacon. It was served piping hot. The name is like a throwback to the late 90s when any names that switched their "s" to "z" somehow made them more edgy and cool. E.g., Boyz II Men, Hardy Boyz. Delicious sub sandwiches with additional options of hotdogs and chili, all reasonably priced. One gripe is that they don't offer to toast the bread. Maybe it's too much of a Subway comparison, but how could I not?! The staff were friendly and quick. Never got to ask about all the references to trains they have in the restaurant. I never thought trains were edgy and cool... But I digress. This is a great option on the go and for sit-downs during a lunch break. They have a coke zero option at the fountain, which I believe deserves some recognition. read more

Tried this place on the suggestion of an ex coworker. It wasn't too bad. They have a very interesting selection of food. I had a sub. It was fresh and the bread was good. They only down side is it's a little pricey for what I got. The staff was friendly and quick, as I got my order to go. The place was very quiet and slow, but there were lots of dirty tables. We picked a cleanish one and wiped it off ourselves. We had to wait for them to refill the ice in the soda machine before filling up our drinks. Our food was fresh and tasty. The potatoes are huge! But make sure to ration your toppings or you will get down to the bottom and have dry potatoe. The kids like their hot dogs. Grandpa really wanted the tuna but they were out of it. He opted for the meatball sub and it was delicious. We'll be back again! I did notice they displayed signs showing they open for breakfast at 9. I frequent Hungry Boyz quite often, as I like to support the locals. I always get the # 8 Ham & Swiss, it is so delicious that I actually crave it! I ordered the same sandwich the other day for delivery and it was the worst sandwich I have ever had. I assumed it came with all of the original stuff on it. I ordered it with add-on mayonnaise & black olives. When it arrived, all it had on it was a dab of mayonnaise, one very thin slice of Swiss cheese and two piece of ham. It was so dry I had to to throw it out. Very disappointed. read more

Order it as a king 11 and it will come with double the meat. Delicious soft bread ensures that nothing flies out the back end on that first bite. They also have a large selection of baked potatoes, cake and enough variations on subs to make sure you won't have to eat the same thing twice even if you had lunch here for weeks. Try them!!
