Ary and Ellie made my hair dreams come true! Before my appt with them, I had never gotten my hair professionally bleached or dyed, so I was a little nervous to make the plunge. However, after a phone consultation with Ellie, I was completely put at ease as she walked me through what to expect and considerations. On the day of my appt, Ary walked me through every step of the process from bleaching to color mixing to post hair care. It's been 3+ weeks since my appointment and my hair still looks as awesome as the day it was dyed (although I was warned the fade time completely varies from person to person!). I waited for an hour & around 5:30 pm one of the hairstylists told me they had an appointment coming but to still wait in case they didn't come. But before their "appointment" showed up, he ended up taking the dude that came in AFTER me -.- I didn't say anything for some reason then another hairstylist tried taking ANOTHER dude that came after me. They saw me sitting there for an hour, but didn't consider taking me until one of their coworkers said something. If you don't have time to cut my hair because it was near closing then fucking say so. Don't make people wait a fucking hour for a haircut they won't get. Don't go here. read more

The student discount is so rad -- it's literally half off! Hannah kind of fixed my hair, but to be honest, I had messed it up pretty bad. I think she did the best anyone could do with it, and even gave me solid advice when I initially asked for a haircut that just wasn't going to work with the messed up fringe I had. Ellie is so sweet and such an amazing hairdresser! She cut my hair so wonderfully to frame my face just like I asked and she did a gorgeous colors correction and balayage on my hair which was previously purple! I came in the morning as a walk in and Ellie so graciously took the time to so my hair even though she was booked solid. She even stayed late to do other walk ins hair and to make sure mine was the way i liked before walking out. Been meaning to get a haircut in Berkeley for a while, but I've basically only ever gone to one haircut place my whole life and was scared to try one around Cal. This week I gave up and decided to try Maxi Hair Salon because it was open, super close to Cal, and advertised the student discount. I came in around 5:15 and there was already a couple people waiting, so I was expecting to get turned away. They decided to take me anyways, even though it was guaranteed to make them work past 6pm, and I'm super happy with the result! Ellie was great, super sweet to talk to, and clearly had the experience. I felt really reassured by her knowledge and experience. Ary cut my hair and did an amazing job!! She's so sweet, I would definitely go to her again! The only issue was that I booked for a quick dry at the end ($10), and she asked if I'd like to curl the hair a bit (I thought she meant just to curl it inward a little I didn't know it would be considered styling, I thought I was getting what I booked) and then it was charged for $40 (on top of my haircut). I was concerned so she dropped it to $30 (the same price as my haircut). There wasn't hairspray in my hair either, it fell within a couple hours. Only leaving this part here so people know before they go to say no if they don't want to spend more. read more

Whilst walk ins work for some people I appreciate the ability to book online (and see who offers student discounts) so this was a great start. I didn't have to wait for my appointment to start and the hairdresser was ready for me at the moment I was due (even though she had a client just before). She was attentive to my requests (even though I wasn't 100% sure what I wanted - she worked with that) and a very good quality haircut was the end result. I made an appointment to get my hair done for about 300 dollars. I wanted pink highlights which I knew would be difficult to achieve because my hair was a virgin dark brown. I showed them pictures of my desired hair which was a darker shade of pink with minimal highlights. They agreed that they could achieve it, and for the first session I was there from 12-7. The stylist bleached and dyed my hair all in the same day to my surprise, as I thought lighter colors require several sessions. Once my hair was finished, it was a vibrant shade of red. I told the stylist that I thought the color was off but she said it was normal. She directed me to soak my hair for a few hours in water several times in order to get what I wanted. When I asked for the bill she told me, due to my hair being quite long the total cost would be more than the quote. Instead the grand total was 700 dollars. I left the shop and immediately I went home to soak my hair for about three hours and it ended up dying my whole tub red. I was dissatisfied with the work and reached out to the stylist again. Initially she said she could redo my hair in the next two weeks for 100 dollars which I declined and asked for a refund. I did not want to keep this color for the next two weeks as many of my friends, classmates, and family had made fun of it. She then told me she could do my hair in a couple of days with no additional charge and I agreed. Again I was there, this time from 1-6 and she had ended up dying my hair purple this time. Feeling defeated, I just requested that she dyed my hair back to my original color, and so she did. She also kept some purple highlights in my hair that I did not want but I just wanted the process to be over. The staff at Maxi are the sweetest people and I do not wish any ill on them. However, I had payed for my hair to be done, not the ambience. read more

I sadly haven't been able to go to Maxi Cut in a bit because I have relocated due to COVID, but I continuously went to Maxi Cut during my time as a student at Berkeley. Staff are very attentive, and I quickly built a relationship with Ellie as she did my eyebrows. I am Persian, so generally stylists tend to take too much off or shape them incorrectly because there is so much to work with (and you get hide any missteps). I am so grateful to have found Ellie. I highly recommend her (and have to all my Middle Eastern friends). She made sure your eyebrows look well groomed and fit MY face, going beyond just general eyebrow alignment rules -- if you are particular about your brows you will know what I mean! She always listened intently for what I was looking for and delivered with a keen attention to detail. I actively miss Ellie at Maxi Cut, and if you give Ellie a chance with your brows, I promise you won't regret it. read more
