I sadly haven't been able to go to Maxi Cut in a bit because I have relocated due to COVID, but I continuously went to Maxi Cut during my time as a student at Berkeley. Staff are very attentive, and I quickly built a relationship with Ellie as she did my eyebrows. I am Persian, so generally stylists tend to take too much off or shape them incorrectly because there is so much to work with (and you get hide any missteps). I am so grateful to have found Ellie. I highly recommend her (and have to all my Middle Eastern friends). She made sure your eyebrows look well groomed and fit MY face, going beyond just general eyebrow alignment rules -- if you are particular about your brows you will know what I mean! She always listened intently for what I was looking for and delivered with a keen attention to detail. I can't believe the quality of the haircut I got PLUS shampooing and a quick styling for only $50-something (before tip). Lam was a perfectionist. I truly believe they would not have let me out of their chair without ensuring that my layers were absolutely symmetrical. (For context, I have a s&@! ton of hair that waves and curls naturally. I went from 12+ inches to a jaw-length bob with straight-across bangs. Several days after the cut, I'm pleased to report that styling is effortless: a quick round-brushing for my bangs and a bit of curl mousse scrunched through the length.) Thank you to Maxi Hair Salon (and Lam especially) for proving that you do not need to drop $200 in a spotless gallery of a brick and wood salon in San Francisco in order to get a great haircut. read more

I have gone to this salon 4 times in my two years at Cal and I have only left unsatisfied once (with an employee who no longer works there). Grace, Ellie and the owner Elham are great, skilled hairstylists. Additionally, the salon has an excellent brand of fantasy color hair dyes for anyone who wants to try something different! Depending on the shade, they can last a decent while with the right shampoo and conditioner. Appointments are highly recommended as they can get quite busy and if you don't show up exactly on time, they might take someone else before you. They do accept walk ins, but expect to wait for a good while depending on how busy they are. All in all, Maxi hair salon is a great place to go to, especially with their student discounts! read more

I got my hair colored and my eyebrows tinted here. The hair coloring turned out wonderful! I came in wanting to get my roots dyed, and they did a wonderful job. That being said, the eyebrow tinting service was not good. The service wasn't really eyebrow tinting, as it just consisted of putting the leftover hair dye on my eyebrows without much precision. Some parts of the eyebrows were completely covered, while other parts had no dye on them. As a result, I left the salon with really patchy and uneven eyebrows that I had to get fixed elsewhere. read more

I discovered this place really recently after my old salon's prices increased above my budget. I was not disappointed. So far I've been to Maxi twice and seen different stylists both times. You pay a la carte,so expect to pay more if you want them to shampoo your hair or do a blow out. Their prices are still really reasonable with these services included, especially if you add in their amazing student discounts. You get a lot for what you pay for. I've been extremely satisfied with both cuts I've gotten here once. Today Hannah (I think that was her name) gave me a really cute bob style that fit my idea to a tee. They even do eyebrow threading. Ellie is amazing! I've been going to maxi for the past 2 years and it's my favorite place to get haircuts! I never really had a haircut place that I consistently loved until I found maxi. Ellie is awesome and super dedicated to making the haircut perfect. I normally get a typical asian guy haircut, with a slight fade on the sides. Ellie always spends a lot of time on my sides and pays attention to all the small details to make sure that it's perfect. I'm a serial dyer, so I've been abusing my hair since forever. Then one day, after my third bleach job with a 40 volume developer (I know, I know), the ends of my hair started to melt off. I was literally standing in the shower, horrified as my hair became stretchy and threatened to snap off with each additional tug. So I had to find a place to salvage my hair. I decided to go to Maxi Hair Care because it was 5 minutes away from where I lived, aka only 5 minutes of public humiliation (my hair was this really weird orangey, peachy colour, too). I called in first to make sure they had an open spot, and when I got there I told Ellie that I needed to cut off the damaged ends while trying to keep as much length as possible. I could tell she was pretty horrified by the state of my hair, but SHE DID NOT JUDGE! You have no idea how many hairdressers and stylists judge customers who attempt to cut or dye their own hair, successful or not. Not only did she not judge, she gave me tips to strengthening my hair. She ended up cutting about an inch off, and the entire time she was confirming with me exactly what she was going to do (she probably sensed my heightened state of panic). Also, when I was paying (it only cost me $15!), I noticed they sold Jerome Russell's Punky Hair Color, which is pretty freaking awesome. No more Hot Topic for me! read more

I have been going to Maxi Hair Salon since 2019, when I first started my time as an undergraduate at UC Berkeley. I appreciate the student discount. I continue to go there even after I graduated, because they have given me consistently nice haircuts and eyebrow threading. They have also been the friendliest out of the four salons I have worked with in Berkeley. First time here and Grace was absolutely great! I liked that she cut my hair dry and walked me through it.

While they're under renovation they've moved just a few blocks down and are sharing the space with Zip Clip - a little confusing but just follow the signs. I went in for a complete chop off of my hair, which I've done a few times so I was prepared for it. In less than an hour, I had a great hair cut that was exactly what I wanted and was super cute. Ok, so I have a lot of experience with this place. I went there three days in a row to celebrate my graduation. The first day I went there, I knew I needed to get a hair cut because my hair was over one and half feet long and most of it was dead split ends. It was a rough semester and I had just got my cast off from breaking my right ankle. The first time I went in, Fiona the cute Vietnamese lady, sat with me and gave me a consultation of what sort of hair style I would be interested in. I'd never really had a style so I flipped through the magazines with her. I spent like an hour trying to decide. Then I left because it closed but promised I would be back tomorrow. The next day, I came back in the morning after they opened and they were really happy to see me. Fiona was available and was happy to give me the hair cut I really wanted. I showed her the picture I liked and we both agreed it was really sexy. We got along really well and actually became really good friends. She spent a long time on my hair, making sure all my layers were in the right place. The final result was unbelievable. I didn't recognize myself! I looked so good! Fiona was so proud and happy for me. Then I got blonde highlights put in and got my eyebrows done while I waited for the foil to come off. Everything was perfect. I don't know how she got my hair and eyebrows to look like they do now. Then I came back the next day the morning before my graduation ceremony to get my hair styled and makeup. Fiona spent an hour putting the most gorgeous curls in my hair. We were still able to talk the whole time because she is so smart and so funny and so energetic. Then Ellie, the sweet pregnant lady did my make-up. I don't usually wear a lot of make-up but I loved the result. Ellie is from Iran and has the most beautiful striking eyes. I knew I was in good hands by just looking at the way she can put make-up on herself. She even told me that if I cry, the worst thing I can do is rub my eyes. I either just have to let the tear roll down my cheek, or dab it with my finger at the tear duct. I won't say what my damage was at the end of the day when it came to the bill but I will say that this was my graduation present to myself and was a once in a lifetime transformation. Beautiful service also has a beautiful price. When you tip, it is good to tip in cash so that they don't have to pay the income tax on it twice. First of all, Ellie is the best. She is so patient and kind and really nice to chat with. With that said, it is a rare treat that I choose to go get my hair cut professionally, and rarely something I book/plan in advance. Typically it's a spur-of-the-moment decision that only gets done if I have a longer break in my schedule and can find a salon that's open and available for walk-ins. I was grateful to find Maxi salon several months ago and had the pleasure of getting my hair cut by Ellie, who was able to fit me in on short notice and--much to my delight--gave me the best haircut I've ever received! In the past when I've gone to get my hair done the stylists always say they don't really know what to do with my hair because it's a unique texture. Even with my mask on, Ellie was able to wash/cut/style it in a way that was super cute and complimentary to my face shape when my hair is both curly and straight. So it was no question when I decided to get my hair cut again that I would try to go to Maxi and hope for Ellie. Once again, she was able to fit me in on short notice and gave me another perfect haircut. It feels so good to be able to trust her and know that I'm going to love whatever she does! It makes me want to get my hair cut more regularly--and when I do, I'm absolutely coming back to see Ellie :) read more
