When the technician returned, additional troubleshooting was done, including time spent consulting with technical support. A diagnosis was eventually provided, but there was no clear or practical repair path presented. Instead, I was advised that replacing the furnace would likely be the best option. My main concern is that I was charged over $600 for the service calls and ultimately ended up in essentially the same position I started in: knowing the furnace had a problem, but without a repair solution. When a company charges by the hour, there needs to be trust that the time spent is moving efficiently toward a resolution. What I found particularly frustrating is that obtaining a quote for a furnace replacement is typically free. After spending more than $600, the outcome was a recommendation to replace the unit, which made the value of the repair visits difficult to justify. Very upset with the poor service from Hillcrest. I called because my boiler was shut off. He literally spent less than 5 minutes doing the reset and then gave me a ten minute speech about being good on his word and "how you are only as good as your last job" so I should trust him that I need a brand new one. I paid $300 and yet he did absolutely nothing and spent no time fixing my problem. He was extremely rushed, in and out, and only wanted to sell me a brand new boiler, no interest in looking at my system at all. So then I called Milani, the guy came, pulled my igniter out and discovered it need to be replaced, opened the thing up and cleaned out all the debris, changed the water on the trap, showed me how my system works and took the time to look everything over including my ventilator system. While cleaning the furnace they said they had to replace the furnace igniter and flame sensor. For the furnace ignitor they charged $349 and the flame sensor $189. On line you can see a furnace ignitor is $85 and the flame sensor is $13. So, I was charged $538 for parts valued at about $100 plus the furnace cleaning! When I complained about the high costs they gave me $100 back. I asked that they refund another $100 but they would not. My furnace was running fine before they worked on it and is working just the same now. So, it is hard to judge the quality of their work. I know they ripped me off with way too high prices for the parts. So, I would say this company has very poor ethics, don't let them into your home. They are just looking to take advantage of their customers, especially unsuspecting seniors.
