We went here after seeing it listed in a self-guided food tour of Flushing. We got here late morning, but they were already out of a lot of items. We ended up getting a lemon raisin roll and a sweet roll. Both were fine, but nothing to celebrate. The prices were very low, however. It's definitely not a place where you can sit and eat, or that you would even want to, so be prepared take everything to go. Several things I like about Maxin. Their name in Chinese is named after my mother, their bao are tasty, prices are pretty good and location is convenient on Main St at 37th Ave. Their main competition is Tai Pan, at the other end of the block and Fay Da with locations all over the place. Maxin's prices are better, taste is about the same, but Tai Pan & Fay Da have better variety and are usually more crowded. There are 2 other Maxin locations on Main St, a smaller store next to Popeye's at Roosevelt Ave and a newer, larger one at Franklin Ave, where I believe they do most of the baking. Typically, I will load up on my standard selection of bao: Roast Pork, Ham & Egg, Hot Dog, Bacon Scallion Hot Dog, Egg Custard Pineapple, Pork Floss, etc. I like to bring them to work for breakfast to go with my tea. If you don't eat them the same day, the bao reheat in the microwave very well, but you have to eat them right then or they will turn rubbery, like any gluten flour bread. They also have steamed bao and frozen dumplings & bao that you can make at home. I don't know why they don't serve hot dumplings, which is something I would try. I will also get a HK milk tea or coffee to go and drink it while waiting on line for the bus; hot in the winter and iced in the summer. read more

Keepin it real out here in Downtown Flushing A while ago, we filmed an ultimate chinese pastries guide and ordered bake goods from a few bakeries near Main St. We actually looked at all of them and ordered just from a few and this was one of them. The place was pretty inviting and customer service was good. Didn't give me a hard time with my camera and the staff were very helpful answering questions as well. I went to this location for the 1st time today & I got the Mango Mousse Cake ($2.75) This cake is pretty firm. The gel layer on top was esp hard to cut through. I do like how it doesn't break easily though. It's pretty sweet & also more firm compared to the 1 from Fay Da Bakery. It's also bigger then the 1 from Fay Da Bakery. When it comes to taste I prefer less sweet so I do still prefer the Mango Mousse Cake from Fay Da Bakery over this one. read more

Typical Chinese bakery with many baked goods and pastries available. Just name one and they should have it. Check it out! The baked goods are moist and fluffy, especially in the early morning. I usually get the lemon bun whereas he gets the dried pork bun. As Agnes in Despicable Me loves to say, "It's so fluffy, I'm gonna die!" ***Our favorite is the COFFEE! The coffee is rich, strong, and satisfying. I usually do not drink coffee in Chinese bakeries, but this one is an exception. Other Chinese coffee places are simply incomparable! It's a confusing bakery because it doesn't look like a bakery. - The sign outside is labeled dumplings. - The front of the shop is a place to sell lottery tickets. - Pre-wrapped Maxin baked goods are located in the middle, with some seating. - Handmade dumplings are in the back. I'm so glad that I found a place with fresh steamed buns. Some other bakeries run out, but I was there at 5:00PM and there were plenty. The huge, huge pork bun comes out a steamed housing. You'll need tongs to handle this hunk of hot white bread. Be careful as you attempt to slip this monster into a wax paper. Inside, the pork is quite porky and meaty instead of the sweet char sui that I expected. I love both types, but this savory version is an interesting take on things. Larger than the size of my fist, it goes for $1.10 For $1.50, you can get a mango smoothie. I was happy to see that the lady threw in an actual slice of mango in a blender with ice and some fruit syrup. On my commute, I'll definitely stop by more it is the closest bakery to the buses and 7 train. One still can't forget how ridiculously cheap this "pick me up" is. read more

Best Chinese bakery in Flushing (or NYC, even). Hands Down!! This is my favorite breakfast-to-go spot on my morning commute. Catch the sugared Almond braid bread early when it's hot from the ovens! Pair with a simple + classic tea with milk (ask for less sugar). Perfect morning. They are so organized and tidy here, and the staff is amiable but never over-friendly. GREAT Chinese Bakery unpretentious, cool! You really get a flavor of local Flushing here in the morning. The neighborhood businessmen will come here with their newspapers to enjoy their pastries and buns which are baked here on premises. Previously, this place was twice the size with a seating area which was very large. Now it's just 5 tables, no problem you can get to know your neighbors. This place has a steam cabinet for hot pork buns. The lottery tickets which are sold here are very popular. It can get very busy here with the line to the door in the AM. commuter rush. The the coffee here is absolutely fresh, strong and delicious ,for a regular cup of coffee this place has it hands down. Get one of their chewy ,fluffy delicious buns or Pastries and sit at one of the nice tables and you're in for a rest from the hubbub of metro Flushing. This place was nicely air-conditioned today and was a respite from the crushing heat and humidity outside today, 100°. I had their taro bubble tea and IT WAS ABSOLUTELY TERRIBLE. Do yourself a favor and get bubble tea from across the street at any bubble tea spot, not bakery. The taro tea was extremely watery and it was clear that they used powder, as the powder was not even properly mixed in. There was powder floating on top and the tea was slightly clear and not milky at all. The bubbles were hard and unpleasant to eat. Definitely not QQ like typical bubbles are. The worst part is, they think they can charge $3.75 for a Large like any bubble tea shop for this piece of crap. If it was like $2.50, then I could justify the quality. Wow--stumbled upon this little bakery just walking around! All kinds of Chinese pastries, both savory and sweet, flank this small bakery. Then there's the jackpot: the case with steamed meat buns! The door was flecked with moisture droplets and the scent that wafted out when it was opened...heaven! My mother was generous enough to give me a bite of her Chinese sausage bun. Oh yeah... Also, everything is incredibly cheap--practically all of the Chinese pastries are under $2 each (as are the steamed buns). There are a myriad of hot and iced drinks (some that include lychees and jelly) as well. I had an almond coffee (no sugar) with my dessert and it was like drinking marzipan. LOVE. My dessert? What they called a 'green tea rice cake.' I'm going to call it 'Chinese mochi.' The mochi was soft and flavorful, with a just-barely-sweetened center of green tea flavored cream inside. I like this place, it serves solid sago pearl tea, and has quite a few pastries to choose from. Came here on a cold Saturday afternoon and really it was nice to just get out of the cold. I usually come here in the morning to grab a bun and some milk tea. The two morning ladies are usually super fast, which helps me since I'm always running late. I like how the buns are individually wrapped and displayed so you can just grab them. I'm actually not a big fan of the milk tea here. It has some strange after tastes. This bakery is pretty sweet! I came here one morning and it was like a flashback to my childhood days in Oakland, CA Chinatown. The long hall way with a counter and buns lining the shelves, and the old Chinese men sitting around (away from each other to not look too friendly I guess) drinking their one cup of coffee they'll have in front of them for the next few hours. I decided to join them with a pork and vegetable and a chicken bun with some Vita Soy milk. It cost me $3.20. $1 for the VitaSoy, and a $1.10 for each bun. WTF. I was so full I couldn't eat all of it. The pork and vegetable buns were in a sort of steaming locker in the front of the store where you can grab them with tongs and put them in small bags. I had ordered dumplings from the shop in the back a while back but skipped over this place. Today, I went back and was surprised to see that they had the same baked goods as every other Chinese bakery but sold them for $0.80. I know I'm sounding super cheap here but I usually buy two pastries for breakfast and lunch for $1.25 a piece. Cut that down to 80 cents and you're saving a lot over the days...weeks...months. Staffs here are rude and disorganized. More than one time they would put napkin on top of your coffee. Guess what all the napkins are soaked with coffee. When i ask for more napkin they would give you an attitude. If they have some common sense and have done the done correctly I wouldn't be asking for more napkins. Their prices cost slightly more than the other bakeries yet the taste and quality isn't better.. I've tried most of their drinks and pastries and their all mediocre or gross. What's especially great about this bakery is its location--most of the bakeries are further down on roosevelt and closer to the subway station. The location is close to where I live so I pass it often when I am coming from the center of Flushng (Main St) ish. A lot has changed since it opened-for a while it served hot food (that 4 choices and rice deal) and now it serves sushi and theres even a dumpling place in the back. They offer the usual selection of chinese buns and pasteries. The fluffy yellow cupcake like bun I always get always tastes airy and fresh. The space is open and clean and never crowded. Things don't get restocked though so by 7pm-only 50% of the baked goods are left. read more

My brother lives near here, since he's like 20-25 min from in White Plains, NY. We stumbled upon it, its got couple locations, this one was on the corner. I love their Coconut paste bun, one of the best I've had. All bakeries make it differently , they use creamy paste, not coconut shredded, or other stuff , it had a coconut flavor, but was filled inside ..not just small portion. You can get a tray grab what you want yourself, bring it up to register. I love going to Flushing, just so I can pick up some .Great one !!. read more

I work in Flushing on the weekends and my coworkers and I usually get breakfast here since it's nearby and cheap. One of our favorites is the hotdog and scallion bun. It's greasy as heck but it's flavorful and filling. I personally also like the steamed chicken bun but some may not like the fact that there's a decent amount of dough around the meat. The bacon roll is also pretty decent. If you're lucky and get these items when they're fresh, this place can't be beat for a good, filling, quick, and cheap breakfast. read more

Their baked goods are always freshly made when I stop by in the morning, but what keeps me coming here is the customer service. It's rarely hard to find Flushing workers that would take the time to greet you or even simply say "Thank You". The ladies that work here are always so sweet! read more
