This shop has been here forever and it's been while since I've stopped by so I wanted to check it out once more. You can order with a person or the kiosk which I thought was nice because I had absolutely no idea what I wanted and did not want to awkwardly stare at the person up front so I hurried over to the kiosk. My fiancé ended up getting the durian royal which I really liked. The base was nice and creamy. I ended up getting the mango sago with a coconut milk base which I ended up regretting. The reason why I regretted it was because yes, I wanted a light dessert but this wasn't really a dessert and was more of a drink. There was a lot of coconut milk with a little bit of sago and a couple cubes of mango which made it feel like it was literally nothing. This place dessert is always perfectly low-sweetened but semi-sweet enough to taste just right. It's a lower price for smaller portion but enough to satisfy and not too sweet, where I would be confident to eat it here and there without negativity affecting health due to sugar. I love these traditional chinese formula recipes and the option to choose sweet porridge or fruit porridge. I believe the fruits are so fresh, without high fructose corn syrups that tastes like home-made, with the great traditional healthy sweets that are good for all ages. Metal bar stool seating by the entrance, booth seating inside. Ordered at the counter and was given a buzzer. We got a table when some people left but tables weren't cleaned in between customers. Restroom available. Took more than 20min for our order, I guess for the dumplings. We got steamed pork and chive with chili oil on the side. Bite-sized, ok snack. The mango pomelo (D) under taro mochi and ice cream came out colorful; shareable size so not bad for the price of about $10. I like mango/mango puree/sago desserts (simple "mango sago" was my go-to at Kulu years ago) so taste-wise was satisfied. I got gummy/chewy from the mochi pieces and soft from the jelly and ripe diced mango. Mochi were in different shades so I thought were different ingredients. I have not been to Kulu Desserts for some time. They have awesome desserts. Today I wanted to try out their dumplings. As you walk into the establishment, there is a kiosk. Place order and inquired with the cashier how does one know when order is ready. She said they will call you. Friendly, and helpful staff. Took a seat at the booth. The table definitely needed to be wiped down. Checked two other tables and they needed to be wipe down as well. Only one person at register, so do not know how often these tables are maintained. I love this place because it's always a cheap and good lunch. Although they're a dessert bar, I think I've only actually gotten savory food from them. I've always respected the Kulu's mission of highlighting Asian desserts across the tri-state and have generally liked the brand enough to keep supporting them. This location in Elmhurst is not my favorite for a number of reasons, which boil down to service and maintenance / cleanliness issues. The good news is that this still a viable dessert option in the neighborhood. Most people are here for frozen treats and/or drinks. During the summer months this place is packed and is usually full of youngins looking for a place to hangout or folks who are simply looking to get a little work done with their free WiFi. (#1) The HK bubble waffles will always be a draw as will the mango pomelos, and sweet taro ball combinations. I still appreciate the dedicated durian (#2) tong sui selections, and the very-on-brand pudding jars (mirukulu). Because they also share the same kitchen, it's important to point out Dumpling Town (#3) also exists in the same space (and all the other locations as well). The dumplings are good in a pinch and the pork + chive and curry chicken probably stand out the most. For the beef noodle soup, it's completely hit or miss. The biggest of all comes down to the staff, which has been incredibly inedpt when it comes to basic customer service. They have mitigated this somewhat by offering a self-order kiosk, but that doesn't mean the orders will always come out right or that they're particularly friendly with patrons. The other issue is maintenance of the place where I've noticed sticky tables or floors or an unkept bathroom. They are very active with food delivery, especially on third party services. I love the soup here especially the mixed vegetable dumplings with the soup noodles for a good price ($10), I believe that you get a good portion of food. Service was fine nothing to complain about there. I love sitting in a booth minding my business eating my soup. It is a busy store, but there are usually places to sit down if you want to be solo or in a group setting, just ask for a wipe to wipe down your table!! I have been going to Kulu for years. I typically get either their Mango Pomelo with Taro Balls and ice cream, Grass Jelly with sweeten milk, Sesame balls in Ginger Soup, Mango Pomelo with sago, or one of their durian desserts with sago and ice cream. Love - I love their hot dessert (Hot Tong Sui), especially their sesame sweet balls (rice glutinous balls with black sesame filling) in ginger soup. It's my favorite during the winter - warms me right up! Like - Their Mango Pomelo with sago usually hits the spot. It's not too sweet but also has flavor. There is a decent amount of toppings. I feel the same way about their durian dessert - so good! Durian in other place usually taste freezer burn, but this one taste pretty fresh. I do want to note that durian is an acquired taste. A few of my friends are not a fan. They think it smells like feet. Eat with caution, haha. I'll think about it - I used to like their taro balls because they were chewy all around with the right amount of bounciness as you eat it, but the past few times I have gotten it, they are the hard kind of chewy where my jaws hurts eating it. I am not sure if it is because I got it as take out so the coldness of the dessert harden the mochi. My friends and I walk in to Kulu, and we were greeted with water dripping inside the place and people trying not to slip on the wet floors. It felt like a slip and slide!! There were no signs saying be careful of the wet floors, just a white bucket collecting the water. Management should do something about this. Anyways, came here as my friend was craving the desserts. We came here for the pork & chive dumplings. It was a carry out order and it took 20 minutes plus they only gave us a tablespoon (literally) of sauce in the container. My first experience with Kulu Desserts was a location near Edison, NJ. I've always enjoyed their dumpling selection and I've scarfed an embarrassing number of them down in one sitting. Recently while looking for a snack in Elmhurst, I noticed this Kulu along Grand Avenue. Hoping for a similar experience, I headed on in. This one is a bit different than the one in New Jersey. There is plenty of seating and a display case featuring Gundam model kits (very cool). They also have bathrooms for customers in the back that I found clean and well maintained. More interesting is the ordering process, which is entirely done at a kiosk near the entrance. You tap your order in, pay and then wait for your order number to be called. While I am a big fan of human interaction I admit this takes a lot of ambiguity and repetition out of the process as everyone tries to holler at each other through masks and plexiglass. I've gone to this Kulu twice and each time my order was made very quickly. I think the longest I waited was 15 minutes and that was for several orders of dumplings and one noodle orders. In terms of service and friendliness I have no complaints. I am happy to report that the dumplings here taste exactly the same as the ones I've had in New Jersey. Among my favorites are their fish dumplings and the dumplings with pork and cabbage. My noodle soup was a spicy beef soup and the way it is packaged is really cool. The noodles and broth are separated with a small tray. When you get your meal to where you are going, you can then combine the two to get noodles that aren't all soaked through and mushy. A lot of New Yorkers claim that if you move away from the city you will miss the restaurants. The idea is that New York gets the immigrants who make the best food. This is largely BS, however, as most of the more enterprising immigrants have always known that there are better deals to be had in this country than the slums of the Big Apple. Plus, there are Americans who know how to cook too, you know. When in Clearwater Beach, there are really only two restaurants that I miss. White Castle (go ahead and scoff) is one, and the other is Kulu. (One of my Yelp profile pics was taken at Kulu shortly before the virus hit.) Although I'm not a big fan of most types of "authentic" Chinese food, I do enjoy dumplings. I have tried dumplings from Xian to Shanghai, but Kulu has the best dumplings I have ever tasted anywhere. I don't know how they get such great flavor into their dumplings, and I don't care. I just want to dine here whenever I am back in Queens. And not only are the dumplings fantastic, but the prices are very low too, ranging from $5 something for a plate of eight to $7 something for dumplings in a broth with noodles. (There is currently a $1 surcharge for each order of dumplings due to the virus.) I prefer the dumplings on a plate (with vinegar) because you lose some of the flavor when they are in a hot broth. But on cold days, I still usually get them in soup form. Last week, my wife and I were here when it was in the low 40s outside, so I had my pork and cabbage dumplings in a broth with noodles. My wife had pork and chives dumplings in Kulu's "signature spicy soup". Came here on a cold winter afternoon and tried their House Special Beef Noodles in clear soup. The serving is actually big, lots of noodles and a good serving of beef . It is flavored just right, no overwhelming spices. As a final touch, they topped the soup with chopped cilantro, seaweeds and sesame seeds. Kulu Desserts serves Hong Kong style desserts. Their menu mainly consists of dessert bowls, bubble waffles (in a cup), regular waffles, and drinks. We opted for a dessert bowl and one bubble waffle cup. They have a really large variety of dessert bowls. They are mainly filled with a liquid, one scoop of ice cream, and pieces of fresh fruit. Some of the ingredients that are available in their bowls are grass jelly, mango juice, red bean soup, coconut milk, pudding, and durian. The bubble waffle cups are nothing too fancy. If you have had the bubble waffles from street carts that you see in Chinatowns, then you know what to expect. They take a sheet of those and put it inside a paper cup. And then add some fruit and ice cream. It is a very simple but tasty idea. We did not have the regular waffles, but they are just normal waffles with ice cream and fruit, like you would find in any cafe or diner. I would skip these as you can get those anywhere. The drinks are also skippable as they are ones you can find in any bubble tea place. Overall, this place is worth a visit because they do offer some unique desserts. However, for some reason, the wait was very long - about 15 minutes for two simple desserts. This might explain why the place was empty during lunch time.
