2 stars is for the quality range, if it weren't for this I'd be giving One star. I walked in and not one of the 8 plus staff members could bother to to greet me, they were all to busy talking to one another, I guess they are paid to talk to each other. I was looking for a particular brand of pistol and due to the show cases being poorly designed, scratched up and debris on top of the counter it made it difficult to see the products. The handguns are just put in the case shelves with no particular order, with price tags as big and some bigger than some guns and the clutter makes it hard to see what's what. Finally, i got the attention of a staff member and asked if they carried a certain brand of pistol and he stated no, I asked if he was sure and he stated yes. I then asked why is one in the case and he proceeded to say it must of been left over, so much for knowing your inventory. I decided to head over to the range counter and I was told I had to fill out a range waiver, so I went to the computer and started the process. Well, I figured it was sign your name and that's it, but nope, it's name , email, phone number, and then they want an emergency contact person and their phone too. That was enough for me, I just wanted to target shoot not give my private info to a gun shop. So I cleared it and went back to the cases to try and find what I needed. While standing there looking, there was a couple of gentlemen looking to sell some rifles. Out of curiosity I listened in and I was floored at what the staff member said, he told the elderly gent that his bbl was rotten and needed to be replaced, and therefore would give him 50 dollars lol. When the gent said only 50 dollars the the staff guy said he give him a little more, then offered 75 dollars lol. Now , anyone who knows guns knows that a M1 garand is worth more than 75 dollars, even with a bad barrel is still worth more than 75 dollars. The word highway robbery comes to my mind, shame on them.. By the way, I took a look at the gun with a light and it appeared fine. After witnessing that I decide it was time to go. Now, as I was walking out something caught my eye and I couldn't stop laughing. I saw Rambo, yes, Rambo wanna be lol. This employee had a sidearm, with a clip knife in his pocket, reasonable. On the other side, he had a leg holster/pouch where he had 3 extra magazines with a huge sheath knife, really? This guy was dressed for an all out attack by a gang of armed midgets lol. With at least eight guys behind the counter all armed I doubt anyone would be crazy enough to try and rob the place because each guy would be throwing shots, Rambo would be lucky to dump his first mag let alone the other three and then go in with his knives, give me a break. This is the attitude the store puts out by letting the sales staff wear this stuff. I guess since they are the only game in town they can get away with the Rambos etc... My money will be spent at a range where the staff is friendly and knowledgeable and is more concerned with helping customer who pay their salaries rather than talking amongst themselves. Not sure the owner knows it or not but he sure isn't getting his full value of salaries he's paying out. G A T guns or Bass Pro would be well worth the extra drive time. This is just my opinion of this store and having managed two gun stores in the Chicagoland area back in the 80's and 90' I can tell you this kind of environment would not have been allowed. Customer service is everything and to all you Rambos at Maxons who might read this take this as constructive criticism and realize that your laughed at for your attitudes,you work at a firearms store, your not in special ops. Wake up and get the chips off your shoulders. A gun shop should be a fun place for your customers and I don't think any of you understand that, too bad. read more

I'm really a big fan of the new range, even though it's now further from my house than the old range. I checked the place out a couple of times before I took the safety course from Jessica Sawicki (exceptional instructor), and then pulled the trigger (yep, pun intended...) on an H&K P30, which I've wanted for years (I originally checked it out at Illinois Gun Works, where they treated me like shit when I walked through the door, and then promptly went out of business - go figure...). Jon walked me through a number of comparable guns, because the P30 is pretty expensive, so it was apparent that he wasn't trying to soak me. I bought that P30, because I knew that it would fit me. They outfitted me with everything that I needed and discounted the purchases. Since that purchase, I usually shoot about once every two weeks (more when I'm frustrated). Jon has told me about specials that they have for range visits, so again, it's not all about the $$$ with these guys. After getting used to the P30, I was originally going to order the Tavor .223 bullpup from GunBroker.com, but decided to buy it through Maxon. Jon and I looked it up online with their supplier, and I was about to pull the trigger (yeah, again...), when Jon let me know that one had come in on consignment. We got the seller to discount it, and I've been happy ever since. A couple of points: 1. I'm not looking for store staff that wants to pal around or shoot the shit. Their job is to run what could be a very hazardous business, in a safe manner. They don't joke around, and if they seem on edge or unfriendly, that's fine with me. It keeps me from relaxing and doing something stupid. Once they know you, you'll be fine. You'll feel it when that happens. 2. Jon's the shit - the other staff are very efficient and friendly (see point 1.), but I'll admit that I always look for Jon when I come in. He knows what I like, and gets me on the range quickly. How'd you like to go, in one hour, from zero to shooting a perfect score in the Illinois concealed carry marksmanship test? You don't plan to carry a concealed weapon, you say? I confess, I don't plan to either--I'm not even an Illinois resident anymore. But I've always wanted to take a basic gun safety course, so this last time in town, I called up an old friend of mine, Sarah Natalie, who manages Maxxon Shooters in Des Plaines, and asked her to sign me up for one. And, after numerous hints from her about how wonderfully terrific their shooting instructors were, I signed up for an hour of instruction too, two days later. Wonderful?? Terrific??? Try an instructor with twenty-three years of law enforcement experience, twenty of those involved in teaching his fellow officers how to shoot better, eight years spent on his department's SWAT squad, and still qualified to teach law enforcement on anything from a handgun right up to a sniper rifle! Yikes! By the time Sarah got done introducing Jeff Klug, my instructor for that hour, to me, I felt like she was pairing me with the real-life counterpart to Mark Wahlberg's part in that Shooter movie! One of the best things about Jeff, though, is something not even on his resume: how patient he is. I was more than a little nervous, next to someone that good! And that really is the first shooting instruction I have ever had, and I really did, at the end of that hour, fire off thirty rounds that would have earned me a perfect score on that Illinois marksmanship test. And, finally, no, I will NOT say how many I missed at that hour's start! Jeff's not only a remarkable instructor, he's also a remarkable guy. read more

Well, I have just left Maxon's shop and these employees don't know what they are doing. I went in there on 8/14/16 to purchase a firearm. The one I wanted had to be special ordered. Filled out the paper work that was required, paid cash and asked a few important questions. They told me it would take a week for my firearms to come in. I asked if during that week do they count the 72 hour cool down period or do I have to wait another 72 hours when it comes in. They said no, no waiting once it comes in. So, all is good. Because of my schedule I go in 2 weeks later and the guy spends 20 minutes trying to find it only to tell me he doesn't know why its not there. We will call you when it comes in, should be a few days. Ok! I get a voicemail message yesterday stating that my background check is clear and I can come pick up my firearm. I get there today and they tell me I have to wait one more day for my background check to clear. Now, when I went to pick it up the first time the guy pulled my paperwork out of the file and was ready to let me walk out with it that day. SMH.....I asked for a refund on my order because now I'm dealing with a bad business and they kept $50.00 of my money for a handling fee. I asked them if they are sending it back and they said no, and I was not charged for the special order so they just made $50 off me for inconveniencing me 2 times. Bottom line= BAD SERVICE, RUDE EMPLOYEES, OVER PRICED MERCHANDISE AND INCOMPETENT STAFF= ONE VERY UNHAPPY CUSTOMER. If I could add negative stars, I would. Rip off read more

The owner(s) of his gun range really ought to monitor the way their employees treat customers. The guy behind the desk ( aBarney Fife look-alike) talked to me like I was bothering him. I am a retired 22 year Police Veteran that went to Maxon with 2 friends to use the range facility. The guy behind the counter in a condescending tone asks me what do I want? I responded, "we wanted to use the range" he responds....do you see over there? Like I had been there 100 times before.... fill out the forms before coming up to the desk, and that there is a half hour wait. Rather than patronizing a business that treats its customers like that, we left and drove down I-90, 25 more minutes to Route 25 (N) and I-90 Gat Guns, in East Dundee. Were were welcomed by a professional staff, and asked to sign in. The merchandise in stock at Gat Guns is probably 10 times as much as Maxon, and you are treated like a "Customer" instead of a bother. The range fees are cheaper, the ranges, yes I said ranges, that accommodate rifles, shotguns, handguns, etc. Bottom line, my friends and me spent a total of $350.00 on merchandise, and ammunition, and paid far less in range fees. If a Maxon Owner(s) read this review, you have lost 3 repeat customers, because of 1 ignorant, unprofessional employee. In case your wondering which employee, it's the skinny guy who got beat up a lot as a kid, and now that he wears a gun he thinks who he is. I had heard that Glenn Promisco was working at Maxon's as their gunsmith. So I headed out there and asked to speak with Glenn. I was told that Glenn no longer works there. There were two guys that told me that they do gunsmithing - an older man and a younger guy. I inquired about getting an action/trigger job done on my revolver. The older "gunsmith" told me that he could do that. I was asking the older "gunsmith" how he would perform my action/trigger job. All I can say is that I was very nervous about leaving my revolver in his hands. He did not appear to understand the mechanics involved in how to do such work. I was not comfortable at all with his explanation, and it was obvious that he really was not up to the task. That is really a shame, because I wish that Glenn was still working there. Glenn has done action jobs before on some of my revolvers, and he really knows what he is doing. I did notice that on Maxon's website that they list their gunsmiths as being manufacturer-certified armorers. I think that really sums it up quite well. They may be "armorers", but they are not full fledged gunsmiths. I caution anybody going there with the expectation that you will have a gunsmith working on your gun to realize that such will NOT be the case. I will be taking my revolver elsewhere for servicing. read more

I was considering stopping by this place to use their range. Well, if you click on the photos for Maxon Shooters Supplies & Indoor Range you can see why I will NEVER shoot there. There are three photos of some moron who is holding what looks like a 20 gauge shotgun with a cigar in his mouth, a black hat on, safety glasses on, and ear protection on. The guy is holding a wolf target in his left hand. Do you notice anything wrong in his three photos? The bolt is closed on his shotgun and it is pointing towards the door where people enter the range. I know because I have shopped for a gun there before, but have never shot on their range. The total idiot has a shotgun with a closed bolt and he is not in the shooting booth. He is pointing his weapon in the direction of where people come into the range from. This is a serious safety violation and I can not believe that such behavior is tolerated at this place. Well, I don't want to become a statistic from an accidental discharge so I will NEVER be using this range - ever! BTW: This place has a 5 star rating from the NSSF. As a new handgun owner, I took a private instruction with Ivan Rodriguez. I wanted to start off the right way. I wanted to learn the correct and safe method to handle a handgun. The very first thing Ivan told me was the Four primary rules of firearm safety. He showed me the proper way to hold a handgun, to aim, to stand etc. Even simple things such as loading the magazine can be executed in a more efficient way. At the shooting range, Ivan taught me the proper gun range etiquette. I appreciate how valuable Ivan's instructions are and I would totally recommend Ivan, an ex-Marine to anyone who is a new gun owner to take lessons with. The moment you enter the main door, you will be greeted by Jazmin. She always, always has a lovely smile! :-) John UPDATE: I also took a personal training session with Luis Lopez. He was very professional and skillful. He helped me to zero the red dot on my handgun. Luis is also a soft spoken and patient instructor, He listens to your needs and provide solutions! RESPECT = ZERO at this operation. I wish I am able to give them Zero stars, but unfortunately one star is the lowest available. They were the rudest group of people that I have ever met. They did a good job picking their employees (misery loves company). They all share the following: Zero customer service, Zero people skills, Zero business skills and 100% Zero personality. When I voiced my opinion about their poor customer service, the angry bird behind the counter told me that if I don't like it, I need to leave. I was very shocked with his rude comment but I wasn't surprised at all. I respectfully left that operation and I will never go back again. There are many respectful places around (like GAT guns and the North Shore shooting club) that deserve my business well more than these miserable creatures do. I was planning to spend at least $1000-$1500 there, but I guess I will follow the genius's advise and take my business elsewhere. I couldn't agree more with some of the other reviews that this place is OVERPRICED. They make you pay to use a plastic clip for holding the target on the range. This is very weird and unheard of at any other ranges. Also, the range is very small with hardly any room between shooters. It feels very cramped while shooting there. And to be charged $21.95 for ONLY an hour of shooting, plus the deposit fee for the stupid plastic target clip, just makes this a bad deal. Lastly, if you go there to shoot alone you can NOT rent any of their guns. That is totally absurd and a very dumb policy. Needless to say, I will never be going back there to shoot. Nor will I ever purchase a handgun from there because their prices are very inflated. I do NOT recommend this place to anyone for range shooting, nor for buying firearms. This store/range recommended by a friend who had visited others in Chicago Area. I can't say how pleased I am. Took two of their basic pistol classes and one private. The private taught by Jeff K. Outstanding; first in room discussion and then significant advice on the range. Saw immediate improvement in stance; grip; trigger pull and safety. The place is clean and well organized. I like the double door entry from the store area to the shooting area. The lanes have double shelves so easy to store below; the target choices are extensive and the control for distance target control is the best I encountered after visiting another gallery. The only issue is getting only one box of 9mm at this time. Can go through 50 rounds in way less than an hour. I understand this is ammo shortage but another gallery let me buy 100. read more

This place is neat, organized, and friendly! Best place to shoot in the area hands down! Of course there will always be that yelp commando giving great establishments the thumb down, 1 star, or bad review. These are usually the people that cannot follow posted safety rules. I will always recommend Maxon's over any other range or gun store in the area. Come see for yourself; don't let those few that had a bad experience keep you from coming here. I absolutely enjoy the combat shoot, that's a great way to hone your skills. Keep it up Dave; you are doing a fantastic job!! I came here when they first opened up. Staff is great, huge selection of guns, and many lanes available. We drove up from Orland Park to try it out. We had rifles and handguns. I had handguns, but they allowed me to shoot at the rifle range with my friends and didn't charge me the rifle range fee, but the fee for handguns range. They have 2 fees. 1 for using the handgun range and another for using the rifle range. I think it was a $5 difference or so between the two. I didn't like the lighting system they used. You can only light up a third of the lane and that's it. It was a nice encounter, but not worth the trip, gas and the time. I'll never go there again, but I was glad to at least try it out. Not my cup of tea and wasn't worth it. read more
