I recently enrolled in their conceal and carry classes. John was my instructor and he was phenomenal! John simplified all the legal stuff for everyone to understand. The materials John covered were very informative. Additionally, on the last day of class John provided a tech so you can get finger printed. John also provided a sales representative for USCCA that discussed the importance of being protected. You had the option to enroll into their membership program. The membership not only provides you with additional training but they also help you in the event you are put in a position where you have to use your firearm. When we did our range practice Linda was one of my instructors. Linda corrected me on some of the things I was doing wrong and I appreciated it. Linda was very patient and as a result I passed! Found a gun here that I had been trying to find for a while. Was elated that they had it, even though it was priced *at least* $100 more than the MSRP. I bought it anyway and when I came back after the 72-hour background check, I took it in the range with my free range pass to try it out. I didn't bring anything with me, so I bought a box of 50 rounds (reloads), a hat, protective glasses, some $15 ear protection, 1 target and I picked up an UpLULA loader for $40. When dude with the grey hair rung me up, it was $119! WTF! I knew he overcharged me, but I was like this'll be the first and *last* time I buy anything from these guys. One day I went in there carrying a shotgun I bought new from them a few years earlier for $400.00. I didn't tell this to the old, grumpy guy who took care of me. It was obvious he didn't remember me from all the times I'd been there before but that was fine with me. I'd bought other guns and accessories from the place but wanted to see how he'd treat someone he clearly didn't realize was a repeat customer. I pulled the gun out of the case and handed it to him. He handled it like it was a totally foreign object to him, like he'd never even SEEN a gun before, turning it this way and that for the better part of a minute. I swear to you, he looked just like that zombie clumsily holding a rifle upside-down in the film, 'Land of the Dead'. Eventually he asked me what kind of gun it was. Seriously? This guy has worked this same gun store for YEARS and doesn't even recognize a VERY common brand of shotgun? Wow! Next, he lays it on the counter and starts waving his hands over the entire barrel, waving them like some bad magician beginning a lame trick or perhaps like a faith healer attempting to raise the dead. "It's all scratched up!" he proclaims loudly. All scratched up? I'm thinking. There was one, small ding on the tip of the barrel but that was it. I asked him where it was scratched up. He waved his finger (he waved a LOT) over the entire tip of the barrel and says, "All over!" Could he BE more vague? I thought. I just stared in disbelief. Then he says he'll give me a hundred bucks for it and that no one will want to buy it anyway because it's illegal in Chicago. What's that got to do with anything? I'm thinking. We're not IN Chicago. Then he waves his hand (yet again) over the heat shield and the Tacstar Sidesaddle attachments I'd added and says, "These don't add any value and besides, this heat shield only costs ten bucks." Now I'm getting mad so I say, "If that heat shield is only worth ten bucks, why did you charge me twenty-nine DOLLARS for it?" That's it. I've had it. I put the gun back in the case, walked out and will NEVER return. read more

I recently started going to Pelcher's and have been very satisfied with my experience. I have found a much more inviting and relaxed atmosphere there compared to other ranges in the Chicagoland area. The staff is just as knowledgable as any other shop but much friendlier and more professional. The store is small but has all the basic things you'd need, plenty of firearms to choose from. The range is well lit with automatic target lines. It is well ventilated so it's not stuffy like a lot of other ranges. I recently took a ccl class there with my father. We had Doug as an instructor and I would definitely recommend anyone looking for some instruction to ask for Doug. He was a fantastic teacher and a hell of a nice guy. each 8-hour class day flew by. Larry Pelcher was the instructor at the range and I found him to be a fantastic teacher as well. very calm, patient and very insightful. If you're new to shooting, this is the place. The range fee is $20, which is a little high but pretty standard around Chicago. My only complaint is that they don't offer any kind of membership for loyal customers read more

I'm giving this place one star because of the rude sales associate. I had a firearm transferred from a store in a neighboring state because this store did not have it. When I went to pick it up I asked about ammo and when I saw the price I told him no thank you. $32 for ammo? I think not! I told him I'd just buy it elsewhere. My comment upset him as he said,"next time why don't you purchase your firearm there too!" I simply responded ok as I did not want to argue with the old man. Never again will I transfer a firearm nor shop in this store. I rather drive a bit further and be treated with respect. l live five minutes from this place and I go to Eagle Sports to shoot! I had a gun transferred from Tombstone Tactical thru Pelchers and mister Pelcher charged me state tax. The man is a crook!!!!! Prior to this I purchased two firearms from him and after looking on line I found that I paid WAY to much (live and learn). I brought my 1911 colt slide to have sights put on . Two months later I'm having regrets. Still not done. Larry told me his employee lent the tool out that installs them and sent it out to be done . This is after the two months have past . First it was given to me with the front sight dead (night sights) it's debatable whether it was damaged during installation . Drove there a second time that day to return it .I was told that they forgot to check it before given it to me, and that it's a warranty issue. These circumstances might be Beyond Larry's control ,but one can't help but to wonder if they're dealing with incompetence . Still waiting almost 3 months .05/31 - 08/22 . Mr. Pelcher is a Prince of a man, and he's about as knowledgeable, as it relates to firearms (handguns, shot guns, rifles), as anyone I've ever met. And don't ever challenge him in trap or sporting clays, because he'll kick your ass. I guess what I'm trying to say is that he not only talks the talk, but he walks the walk as well. He's got a lovely little shop with some great employees. He'll give you a fair price on your unwanted firearm, and he's competitive on new firearms. Additionally, he offers some excellent classes-hand gun cleaning and maintenance, shooting technique, and of course concealed carry, at which he makes things much more interesting than average by spinning some real life yarns-he was a cop for about 40 years or something. And I would be remiss if I didn't mention that despite your knee jerk opinion about this area of Chicagoland, Lansing is a really nice little town with some good shops and good eats. Had some simple gunsmithing work done on a rifle, but did not buy a firearm. The owner is a serious guy but practical. I was getting ready to pay for an expensive service and he downsold me to do a more economical solution. I believe the gunsmith who looked at the rifle was named Rick. He and the other guy who was there(Doug?) were helpful and funny. There's one old timer who can be a little stand-offish, but I want to give him the benefit of the doubt. I can't fault him for being curt/impatient with a young shooter. He's probably used to some really ignorant kids coming in who think firearms are all fun and games. Ammo prices are, as is expected, a little high. Small shops just can't compete with the high volume of big box sporting places that I won't name here. Pelcher's would benefit from advertising bulk options. Overall, a good place. Planning on buying at least one firearm from them in the next six months. Even if I pay ~$30 bucks more than a big box store, I'm going to get a better experience by supporting a local shop. read more

I took the concealed carry training from Pelchers during the week day classes. My instructor was Doug Zylstra for 6 hours classroom training two days and the owner Larry Pelcher for range training one day and Gabe and John doing the range qualifications the second day. I felt that the training was high quality training in every way. I learned all I needed to know in regards to the new laws. I would highly recommend Pelchers Gun Store for concealed carry training for Illinois. I have an appointment with them to do my app online and look forward to it. Went in for the first time with my daughter for her 14th birthday. Staff was very friendly in helping me rent a manageable gun for her. Range was well lit and prices were reasonable IMO. I like to support local businesses only if they deserve it and pelchers staff definitely won me over without even trying. They made my daughter and I feel welcomed. Will definitely be back soon. Range was not busy either. Went during the week after 5pm as well. They tell me its pretty busy on weekends so weekdays are probably best. read more

Awesome CCW course. The instructor was very friendly and informative. On the range the instructors were very safety focused and helped every shooter at their level regardless of their experience. They are a touch more expensive than a lot of other local programs but the cheaper ones don't provide a gun or ammunition. The store is usually busy but my experience with the staff has been great. read more

I went over there for the first time last Saturday to get in some range work. I found the staff to be friendly and helpful. The range is small, only 5 lanes but well ventilated and has decent lighting. I guess it can get crowded at times but surprisingly I did not run into that. Very nice set up for a small operation. I passed Pelcher's today on the way to another gun shop and decided to stop in on a whim. I was assisted by "Doug" and he was fantastic! Doug was not only knowledgeable but was able to share his knowledge in a very clear manner. He assisted me greatly in narrowing my choices for a new handgun. While he helped me I overheard a couple being help by a younger female employee and she seemed very helpful as well. I agree that their prices seem a tad higher than other shops but you also have to go farther out of the way to get those prices. I called to inquire about an FFL transfer because my brother recommended them. I was transferred on the phone three times before I finally got someone who actually could "help" me. I was asked by the lady what type of gun it was. I explained it was an XD 40 subcompact. She then asked where it was coming from to which I answered "Sportsman's Outdoor Super Store" an online store. She immediately said no. When I asked why, she said "we don't do transfer from online stores." She asked me the price of the gun which was $429. She said, "yea they are selling it at wholesale and that undercuts our price of $600 dollars." I responded that I would be paying an FFL transfer fee, not to mention its good service. I would be excited to shoot my new gun and would buy ammo, targets, and range time. Not to mention I am an impulse buyer and may potentially purchase more at their store. I got another series of impolite no's to which I said thank you and goodbye. Never going to purchase anything there, never going into store, never going to recommend. And I'm going to set my brother straight... LOL read more
