The range is outdated. Old toggle switch/cable target carriers with no distance readouts. You just have to guess by the red lines on the floor. Stalls are dark. Had to call the guys at the desk to sweep up the brass. One of the cheaper ranges for a reason. But I want to discuss their sales. As we know, IL has a 15rd magazine limit for pistols. In spite of this, and regardless of your feelings, they completely ignore it and have a ton of handguns with 18+ magazines for sale. Now we all know all the cops that frequent this place off-duty, and GAT feels like they can just skirt the rules. The problem is, if you're caught, they won't be held responsible at all. I pitty the poor new owner that is unaware of this restriction and suffers consequences. Used firearms appraisals? Forget it. Their offers are straight up insulting. Even Cabela's does better. They offered me 2x what GAT did without hesitation. Their ammo shelves are pretty bare too. read more

I've been to a lot of gun stores around the state I would say gat guns gave me the most uncomfortable feeling. I wanna give out the positive first the guy that helped me purchase my mag was very helpful and I appreciate that but once i finished my purchase I wanted to look at the guns ask the guy with glasses at the other register that was closer do I show my foid before I go upstairs he gave me a very rude response and facial expression got what I was looking for and just decided to leave I felt my presence was not welcomed I been to gun stores where they ask after you reach a certain point of the store I didn't want to walk up I never been before so I asked do I show my foid card here and that was the response I receive. read more

Called company to inquire about a specific item was in stock and was told it was in stock. I immediately left and drove 30 minutes to the store and was told that they did not have it. After one hour round-trip, very disappointed. I do now remember why I didn't go there anymore. read more

Made arrangements to use GAT Guns for the transfer of a firearm purchase. Fee for transfer is $75 which is well above the $25 at most other dealers but it is what it is. When I went to GAT to pickup firearm I was assisted by a gal who had the disposition of a DMV employee. She obviously had limited social and retail skills and offered no assistance other than handing me the paperwork and telling me to go over there. I took the documents for release to the next station/person who was releasing a firearm to another customer. They stood at the counter for a long period of time chatting about their day, jobs and other things while I waited to be helped. Only 1 employee working this counter. After they concluded, the employee went off to assist another customer not in line leaving me standing there. No direction, no assistance or even acknowledged that I was there and would be helped at some point. I decided to not pickup the firearm and have it returned to original seller. I would rather in counter a 15% restocking fee than pay this place $75 for their lack of any form of customer service. I spoke with the manager on my way out of the store and told him that it was the first and last time I would enter GAT Guns. Again, the lack of assistance, direction and even common courtesy makes me question on why people use this place. The manager (Roy) addressed my concern but seemed as disinterested as the first employee I came in contact with. I would not recommend this business to friends or family. read more

Counted maybe 10 people working there, half on computers, 1 person at counter offering assistance to look at items he helped someone and disappeared. I waited 20 standing there with no other customers no assistance at all. Went there with intention to purchase today. This is not first time this has happened this time I am leaving review. I've been going to GAT Guns for a couple of years and absolutely love the place! I've bought and sold guns there, used their gunsmith services for multiple items who is great, and have always been pleased with everything and everyone. However, today I left with a sour taste in my mouth. A couple of weeks ago, I purchased a Mossberg Shockwave from GAT, which comes with the Raptor grip (a pistol grip). When I went to shoot it for the first time today, I was told that this firearm isn't allowed on the range due to its grip. While I have no issue with policies, I was very disappointed because I specifically asked the salesperson at the time of purchase about using it, and his response was, "You can shoot right here downstairs." I'm not sure if he was trying to make the sale or was simply unaware of the policy, but I've now ended up with a $600 firearm I can't use at the range which I would of never bought had I known. read more

This gun store advertises gun discounts that turn out to be coupon events where they sell you the gun at full price, but you receive a coupon to mail to the gun manufacturer. Then you hope the manufacturer will get back to you and give you...I don't know what, probably some kind of a gift card worth $40 or whatever the value is. I consider this deceptive marketing and stopped going to brick & mortar gun stores. I buy exclusively online. read more

I'm a big shooter, have been to MANY ranges. Worst range BY FAR. Did not ask for an ID, FOID, or CCL. I could have been fresh out of jail for homicide and they wouldn't have known. Booths are less than 2 feet wide and they wired the rails for their targets backwards. Lights wouldn't go on and no rake for shell casings in the range. Everyone also smelled like heavy cigarette smoke. For real 0/10. I can't believe this is in an affluent area. read more

I've been going here as long as I can remember but over the past few years it's been taken over by elitist gun enthusiasts that make you feel like you're below them and wasting their time. I was looking to buy a couple new firearms and they spoke to me like I was a child that didn't know anything while trying to up sell (I understand it's part of their job) me on weapons that were not anything comparable to what I was seeking. I was lectured on military grade this, military style that.... While shopping for a deer rifle and shotgun for bird hunting. I've gone a few times since hoping it was an anomaly but that doesn't seem to be the case. I'm ecstatic to see such strong military support but they should really treat their customers with a little more respect and not like they are wasting their time regardless of their firearm experience. Do yourself a favor, Fox Valley Shooting range is worth checking out. It's in Elgin, everyone I spoke with was ridiculously polite, they have a fantastic selection and a real nice range. read more

On the plus side, they got a huge selection of firearms, at least the biggest selection I've seen in the Chicago area. So, if you don't know what you're looking for, this is a good place to come and browse. On the minus, I got one price quoted over the phone, and then an hour later in the store it jumped up by $70. I raised a bit of stink about that and had to fight for my initially quoted price, so I suppose eventually getting the price I drove out there for is another plus. VERY rude counter lady named Diamond, that's who I dealt with when picking up my gun 3 days later. Just the worst customer interaction skills...she should either be trained better, or fired. read more

I've been going here for years to shoot and have bought many guns here. But over the last year or two the management (especially the range) has deteriorated horribly. Colton was a decent guy to do business with as is Eric, who's still there but now they have a black shirt who has a serious Napoleon complex going on he has anger issues and is the type of person who shouldn't be in any position of authority be it ever so small. Gat is just my backup range now, I'll be taking 90% of my business to Fox Valley, they're nowhere near as convenient but I prefer to be treated with respect. Maybe some day they'll come to their senses and realize he's far more of a detriment than asset. read more

Horrible experience. Bought an AR and Shotgun during the injunction. Couple days later I got a call in the evening from them saying I had to come in that night to fill out my background paperwork or I'd be SOL. So I rush over, and I waited almost 2 hours in line for the guy at the counter to tell me they don't have the AR in yet, and can't do my background check. Next day, I get a different call - same thing- had to come in that day and now it's okay because the AR was in transit during the injunction. Spend another 2 hours filling out paperwork. Girl at the counter submits my paperwork. Tells me everyone's checks have been going through immediately, and they're leaving with their AR15s. Not mine. Told I'd have to wait- - which was okay with me. Get another call a couple days later- I'm told they submitted the wrong forms and had to restart the process. I call 3 days later, and I'm told everything is good and I can pick up both guns. I go in, and now I'm told because the paperwork was done wrong it went past the deadline and I can no longer have the AR. I ask for a discount on the shotgun for all my troubles. The kid calls the owner and comes back to tell me to go kick rocks. I returned everything and already found a better price on the shotgun. If this is how they treat retired Veterans I can't imagine how they treat everyone else. I will never be buying from them again. Update: After the owner left me a message under this review, I decided to call and talk to a manager. She told me she read the review, but didn't know why I was calling. She told me she absolutely couldn't do any discounts on the shotgun, and they're never able to discount any guns! Only said sorry that they screwed everything up. No idea why the owner wanted me to call since they had NO resolution. Do not patronize this store- you've been warned.. 2nd Update: They removed my post several times on google. And then begged their customers or had their employees write reviews. They were averaging maybe ~one review a week and now they have eight today. So not only are they incompetent - they're unethical too. Just another reason you shouldn't go there. read more
