tl;dr: The nicest humans in the world run this place. Absolutely support this business. Great treats and the cleanest, most efficient, best supported self wash in town. I came here with my current very ragged, extra stinky foster dog. She's a small terrier mix who spent at least a year on the streets. She is a combination of terrier bravado and extreme love me cuteness, but she doesn't know some of the basics of being a companion dog. So the bath plan was very new to her. Everything was set up for me - towels, wash cloth, massaging brush, apron. There are shampoo choices that you can smell before testing which is very important to people with allergies. Because the dog is healing from a major flea infestation, we chose the calming oatmeal shampoo. We were also given a blueberry shampoo for her face and conditioner. Everything is mixed in squeeze bottles for easy application. They also gave us a bowl of treats to keep her happy during her bath. They explained how everything worked and made sure to get the water to a good temperature before we started. The shampoo was excellent quality as was the conditioner. They checked on me to make sure things worked well. When we moved to the drying area, the table had been raised to make things easier. I also want to mention how clean everything is. We were there later in the day. You would think they had just opened given that everything was sparkling. I'm sure other dogs had been there that day, but you couldn't tell. We left happy. The dog looked wonderful and bounced out of there as happy as could be. read more

I have a Belgian Malinois, and even before coming in, the team was so kind and helpful over the phone -- patient, knowledgeable, and genuinely invested in helping me choose the best food for her. When I arrived, I was blown away. The shop is beautiful, clean, and filled with the highest-quality, thoughtfully selected products. You can tell everything they carry is chosen with real purpose and care. What truly stood out, though, were the owners. Jen and Christy (apologize for misspelling ahead of time) are passionate, down-to-earth, and incredibly knowledgeable about pet health and nutrition. They took the time to answer every question, explain ingredients, and make sure I left feeling confident and informed. I honestly felt like I was hanging out with friends who love animals just as much as I do. Even though they likely offer shipping, I'll gladly make the drive again just to experience that level of customer service and connection. We are so very lucky to have Maxwell's in the neighborhood. Kristi and Jen are wonderful people and neighbors and we never take for granted the phenomenal business they've created. Let's start with the bath tubs. We have a 90lb Otterhound and they go out of their way to accommodate her (and boy do we make a mess). The high tubs make it so easy to get her extra clean and we love the organic shampoo and conditioner (plus no tear face wash) that they provide. Olive loves the stairs to get in and the high tolerance for her howls. Now let's talk about the food and treats. For the first year of her life, Olive struggled badly with gastrointestinal issues. Her vet had her on a prescription diet, but she was still having weekly bouts of bad diarrhea. Since switching to the raw diet Kristi and Jen helped us figure out, plus meat-only treats, Olive has had zero issues. In two years. Oh, isn't that expensive, you say? I cannot express to you how priceless it is to not have to clean up a 90lb dog's diarrhea on the daily. Plus we love seeing Kristi's smiling face at our house every couple weeks for the food drop off. They don't even charge extra for it! We love Maxwell's and we are forever grateful we found it. What a fantastic business! Brought our pup, Kate, here today for a bath as I had heard rave reviews - I'm afraid it's all true! The self-service bath station is phenomenal - from the raised baths, to the customized shampoo to meet your dog's needs, to the treats to reward your dog with while bathing, to the ear wipes...When I bathe my dog at home, it's a total back-breaker and a bit of a mess. The whole process at Maxwell's is actually super enjoyable and my nervous pup actually seemed to enjoy her bath - it's so ergonomic and dialed in, that you can actually focus on getting all the nooks and crannies. Their food/treat/toy area is loaded with high quality items, and the staff/owners (?) who helped us were super kind and knowledgeable when making recommendations. Who talks to their dog? *RAISES HAND* Pet ownership can be hella expensive so with Tater Tot's $$$$ expenses, I told him that he needs to create an OnlyPaws account. He looked at me and licked his lips. Great, a thirsty pic for his profile! In all seriousness, when I didn't know any better, I fed my previous poms food from big box chain stores. Then, when I got Tater Tot who had allergies, I started researching dog food brands and YIKES....I found out that the mass-produced food and treats that I fed my previous poms were crap; full of cheap fillers and ingredients sourced from who knows where. Felt like a terrible pet parent. So, I'm VERY thankful for stores like Pawtrero and Jeffrey's in SF that really helped steer me in the right direction in dog nutrition but now there's newer kid is in town: Maxwell's Pet Bar and they're exceptional! Maxwell's Pet Bar opened last year and all the while I was doing errands on the block, I thought it was a dog wash. While there's a dog wash in back with adorable hooman-shaped bath tubs, they have THE most extensive selection of high-quality, small-batch whole food, treats (including ice cream and cupcakes), supplements, apothecary, grooming, etc. that I've seen in the city. You will not find most of these brands at big box chains. I've shopped at locally-owned pet shops from SF and all the way down to Carmel, and many of the things I've seen at Maxwell's Pet Bar were new to me. They even have housemade treats like head-on shrimp, octopus, and whole fish heads...just to name a few. It was overwhelming but in a good way and the owners are there to help answer your questions and provide a nutrition consult. Extensive selection aside, the owners, Jen and Kristi really took the time to research and curate their store with small-batch products made with ethically-sourced and human-grade ingredients. They're even going a step further, and will discontinue brands that started as small-batch but have gone larger scale. Let's talk CUSTOMER SERVICE... My first visit, I was looking for Goat Whip that I found at store in Carmel, and they had that (it's hard to find)! But, I need to manage TT's weight, and they suggested a lower cal/fat alternative to use for his licky pad. My second visit, TT's usual dog food (Ziwi Peak East Cape and Otago) was sold out everywhere BUT they were able to secure a bag of East Cape for me! My third visit, TT's allergies are back and after a vet visit so I had to start looking for a new brand of food. Jen took the time to walk me through various brands and gave me a sample of a new brand of dog food that they'll be carrying soon. She even met with the company's owner who's a holistic vet so *fingers crossed* this one works out. Overall, LOVE Maxwell's Pet Bar! The sheer selection of top-notch quality products for your furkid is the best in the city (IMHO). It's not cheap but 110% worth it for the health of your furkid and supporting a local small business that supports other small businesses and farmers. Highly recommend! read more

We so wanted to become regulars here. Alas, it was not to be so. We had two bathing experiences, both of which were not altogether commendable. We did not like to see 2 different prices for the same service and same size dog for no other reason than "we base our prices on the amount of water, etc.". This, when their dryer (at least the one on the right) does not work properly (on both occasions, it emitted cold air, taking longer and, ultimately, walking out of there with a semi-dried dog). One of the attendants is rather harsh and unfriendly, the other more friendly. We did not feel comfortable and asking or learning how things worked there was more like 'pulling teeth'. I love this place! From the most unique selection of pet treats and toys, to the highest quality of pet food, this pet store is a MUST. They also have a self service pet wash, and they provide every amenity you could imagine. "Today we are serving salmon or duck treats" - the question we were asked by the owner as we were getting ready to wash our dog. They even provide sanitized hair brushes, tearless face shampoo, and toothpaste as part of the dog wash experience. My dog smells so good!
