Awesome little shop in Bernal Heights with friendly staff, great alcohol selection, tons of snacks, sourdough bread from local bakeries, specialty grocery items like spices & jams, and some basic groceries like milk and yogurt. Cute unique gifts can also be found here.

Food- I love going to this place and find unique things I never planned to buy to begin with. Today I went in for a loaf of bread and bought some other items. The store associates recommended these yummy rosemary thyme crackers. Also, found a unique shaped pasta. They also sell some local goodies from tartine, dandelion and Wolf and Badger. Service- the service is awesome. Very friendly. Always happy to recommend items and look for specific things for you.

Bi-rite crème brûlée ice cream pint

The Epicurean Trader sells "Bi-rite" crème brûlée ice cream in a pint. It didn't even last the ferry ride home. It was so delicious, the perfect compliment to my "carbo" load lunch of the day. I originally started on the pastry side of the business with the pastrami and cheese croissant which was pretty good, not excellent but much more tasty than the sandwich I got at golden gate meat company in the past. The croissant was flakey and the cheese and pastrami was spread rather well than most lunch pastry croissants. However, the highlight of my midday ferry ride was definitely the crème brûlée ice cream pint. It's the first time I devoured an entire pint on my own in one sitting but it was totally worth it!!!

Genoa salami, pickles, gruyere, & Swiss on tartine's country bread

I don't intend for meals out to turn into foodie field trips but it isn't uncommon for me to grab coffee, dessert, & gourmet snacks for later after a substantial lunch or dinner. Food Rules Everything Around Me, as WuTang once said. Case in point: for the past five years, a meal out in Bernal Heights usually concluded with nosing around The Epicurean Trader, a well-curated market offering fun-to-browse food products. Their chocolate wall is hard to pass up, as is their condiment selection. I almost never left empty handed. Obviously I'm a fan, but this review is for my latest find in their deli -- Salami Pickle Grilled Cheese ($11.99.) Pressed between Tartine's Country Loaf bread is Zoe's Genoa salami, McClure's dill pickles, & melty gruyere & Swiss. Salty & savory & made with simple but lovely ingredients. Discovering this one item upgraded The Epicurean Trader from a stopover to the actual destination.

There's that fun store called Whole Foods that everyone loves to shop at which we jokingly called "whole paycheck." If I had a lot of money to spend on goodies like wine, imported cheese, and fancy chocolates that cost $10 each, this would be the place to go to. This is the place I imagine techies go when they want to burn through money, or lottery winners when they have a party that needs the best ingredients and some Pizzazz and flare. All the items look amazing, delicious, and there wasn't one thing that I wouldn't buy if I had won the lotto. The guy was super nice and remember me from before I guess due to my Star Wars sweater, and this time around I tried there Grilled cheese with salami sandwich. They're truffled grilled cheese sandwich also rocks but for all intensive purposes I feel like all their sandwiches are toasted to Perfection and are just delicious. I've tried the chocolates here before, My Friends by wine from this place, and I love their sandwiches. Great service and great food for a great neighborhood store this is what Bernal Heights is all about.

Fabulous staff, grocery, and deli - I love their selection. From deli meats & cheese to savory jams & sauces to the best breads available... plus sweet spreads, nut butters, chocolate, chips... And one of the best liquor selections I've seen anywhere... I love The Epicurean Trader and am lucky to live within a 15-minute walk. I shop there 2-4 times a week.

They only had one size back then. Yesterday, I got a medium, but the only thing medium was the length of the bread. What was in between the bread(meat, veggies, condiments), could have fit in a small. My sandwich was empty. Lastly #3. Weighing the meat?! WTH! Old Roxie's just made the sandwich. Eyeballed it. I watched the sandwich-makers continuously weighing 2 ounces of meat. That's not much, for $17. This isn't Roxie's. This new owner is living off the old Roxie's reputation. NEVER going back! Not worth the price or wait. And put some numbers up(Prices)!

Of their menu of 10 entrees, they only had lamb -- no beef, no chicken. So I got the lamb haneeth $19.99 and I had a choice of hummus or babaghanoush. Haneeth is a traditional Yemeni dish consisting of slow-roasted, spice-marinated lamb or chicken served over fragrant basmati rice. The meat is often seasoned with a blend of spices like cumin, cardamom, and turmeric, and slow-cooked in a sealed pot or an underground oven (tannour) to keep it moist. This tender, fall-off-the-bone meat, which is cooked for several hours, is a festive dish reserved for special occasions and feasts. The lamb was definitely tender but was kinda bland and lacked flavor. Same with the basmati rice -- it almost tasted a little old. Service was fine. I waited about 15 minutes for my takeout. There is a tiny counter along the side if you want to eat in. I also got a spanakopita (spinach) and tiropita (feta), each for $3. With so many Mediterranean places around, this market just doesn't stand up to the competition.
