Not too sweet, as you would expect with a lemon drop. Started with the burrata, which was very good. I was torn between the lobster fettuccine and the surf and turf and ultimately went with the surf and turf. Three minor complaints (more constructive criticism): the rice was not a risotto, medium was well-done, and the dish was a bit salty for my preference. It wasn't a bad dish by any means, and I certainly scarfed it all down, so just maybe areas for improvement. Since I've only been here once, I'm only knowing them down a star. Came here from out of town for work. Quick google search for food near my hotel. Zack p was my waiter and he was excellent. Hopefully he is the manager because he was excellent. We went there to celebrate our daughter receiving her masters degree from ndsu. I received a recommendation from a friend who calls it a go to restaurant for celebrating! It sure was because staff and owner congratulated our daughter on her night and even had a special ice cream dessert for her after the wonderful meal. ( I had put in the reasons for going to maxwells in the comment area while making reservations.). The food was top notch, a little more expensive than a chain restaurant, but was well worth it . The ambiance was nice. We had the bison meatballs and escargot to start. The bison meatballs were delicious. The escargot was okay, I've definitely had much better. Honestly, the escargot I make at home is more flavorful. The Paella was extremely salty and had the consistency of porridge. It was quite off-putting. The lobster and shrimp in the paella were pretty good. The octopus was overcooked. I 100% do not recommend this, especially for the price. The lemon meringue martini was excellent. read more

Popped in to Maxwells tonight for a quick dinner. It's nice big restaurant with a pretty cool bar. I was the first diner of the night and just popped a seat at the bar. I started off with their daily soup, which was a dill lemon chicken soup. It was absolutely delicious. I'm going to remake this dish one of these days. Just tons of chicken and amazingly balanced flavors. For my main entree, I order the lobster fettuccine. The saffron Parmesan sauce is tasty. The lobster was cooked perfectly. It was a well composed dish. This is definitely a date spot or a place to celebrate an event. Would recommend to anyone. read more

Really Really Really a must for anyone who loves great food!!! I was in Fargo for a two day business trip. I went to Maxwells twice!!! Had the Black Angus Tenderloin on night one (see photo) tender and flavorful. The presentation was Perfect, almost too pretty to eat! On night two I had their Charred Pineapple Lo Mein ... Absolutely AMAZING!!! I started both meals with their Beer Cheese Potato soup. The best Beer Cheese soup I've ever had!!! ... so smooth and rich. Service was excellent. This place is the real deal!!! My family loves eating at very good restaurants when we visit places. Now, good can mean anything from 5 Star Inn at Little Washington in Virginia or the best BBQ in Atlanta. I always look at a variety of sources: AAA Stars, Tv show food maps, trip advisor, state/ city magazines and their top lists and yelp. Unfortunately, it appears ND is an often overlooked state when it comes to dining. So, I will confess, I didn't have the highest hopes of a great meal. I was wrong. Maxwells was wonderful from start to finish. Beautiful restaurant, warm welcome from the host, prompt and friendly service, well-timed course arrival, well-picked wine menus and, finally, exquisite food. I started with Foie Gras which, if i had to criticize something was that it was so much food! Now, to be fair, it's on the bar menu and had I had been with a group of friends, it would have been perfectly portioned! I thought it was a clever way to prepare as I have always had it as single strip of Foie Gras and this was large pieces mixed with mushrooms served over goat cheese spread on charred toast. So good. I think had the bacon wrapped bison with butter poached lobster claws. The bison was the standout. Great flavor and perfectly cooked. The lobster claw was a tad over cooked but still good. Risotto's earthy ness was well matched against the Bison's flavors. Too stuffed for dessert but was a wonderful dinner. Thank you Maxwells! read more

I've been here twice now, once for brunch and once for dinner. It's a solid place for a fancy brunch (priced at $25), with a variety of options for salads, meats via a carving station, fresh fruits and veggies, desserts, and a chef's window where you can get made-to-order omelets, crepes, etc. For an additional price, you can also get bottomless bloody Mary's or mimosas with your meal. I was glad I got to go here for brunch because it let me taste a little bit (or a lot) of everything, but since we went a little later in the morning, there were some items like bacon that weren't replenished as quickly as I would have liked. For dinner, I was super impressed! It's going to be a higher price point than your typical FM restaurants since it's finer dining, but worth it. I would rank it in my favorites and seemed comparable to Montes and Rustica in terms of the price, atmosphere/service, and quality of food. I ordered the Vieux Carre at the bar, which I would highly highly recommend if you're a fan of whiskey, B&B,m and brandy (and if you prefer strong drinks). It was served in a deep goblet and had a layer of smoke, which infused the drink with this deliciously smoky, woodsy, and rich taste. For my meal, I ordered the sea bass off of their specials menu, and this was amazing! The fish topped jambalaya, and then came with this delightful and unique combination of brussels sprouts, bacon, and jalapeno chutney. read more

Overall, my wife and I enjoyed our food and experience at Maxwell's. While we ate off of the regular menu, we chose to sit in the bar for a more casual setting - we had not made a reservation and we were dressed casually. I had first assumed that while in the bar, we would be limited to the bar food menu but that is not the case. Starting off with a drink, I had a vanilla porter draft beer. I don't remember the brand but I believe it is out of Wisconsin. My wife couldn't decide what to drink so the bartender said he would just make something for her, which ended up being a martini drink that was supposedly a variation of a margarita (with pomegranate). She said it was tasty and strong, and also $12 which seemed a little steep. You could tell the bartender took a great amount of pride in his craft and I could hear him explaining the history of some types of booze to a customer who was asking some questions. For my entree, I had the Lobster Spinach Fettuccine. It was fettuccine made from Spinach, with a very good cheese sauce and topped with a lobster tail and bread. I've always thought lobster is overrated, so while it tasted fine, it was the fettuccine and sauce that made this meal so good. The portion size was very filling. My wife ordered the Roman Gnocchi Tower, which was okay. Nothing spectacular. We finished by sharing a chocolate cake with Bailey's ice cream on top. The dessert was very good and reasonable at $7. Odds of me frequenting Maxwell's again or very often are minimal. Not because of the selection and quality of food, or the ambience (because it is a warm, comfortable place), but mostly because I'm not the type of guy to spend $50 per on his meal. If spending $40-$60 on your meal is not an issue for you, then I would recommend Maxwell's for a try. If you do not know of Maxwell's or are not using something like Yelp to find out, you probably won't stumble upon it. But the same could be said of other good local fine dining like Mezzaluna or Sarello's. read more

My boyfriend had never had crème brûlée, so for our anniversary dinner I searched on Yelp for a restaurant with crème brûlée on the menu. Maxwells was the first to pop up. When I saw the lobster fettuccine on the menu, I couldn't resist (as my boyfriend also had never had lobster). We went and had an amazing experience. It doesn't look like much from the outside, but the inside was so elegantly decorated. They even had a little private room with string lights on the ceiling that can be rented out for an intimate dinner. The food was to die for. From the scallop appetizer to the lobster fettuccine to the surf and turf with bison tenderloin. Honestly the scallops in the curry sauce were my favorite "unique" pairing. We soaked up every bit of the sauce with the yummy bread. The only thing that in my opinion wasn't absolutely incredible was the mushroom risotto. It was still good; I've just had better. The desserts were intriguing. Obviously we got the crème brûlée, and we also got a Peanut Butter and Jelly cheesecake. It was a unique offering (think Cheesecake Factory) and an interesting combination of flavors. I'm not sure I would get it again, but it was fun to try! Also, I was very impressed with the bottle wine selection. We opted for Stags Leap's Hands of Time as it had a very reasonable markup. A $35 bottle at your local liquor store and priced for $50 in the restaurant. I was very impressed to see it have such a reasonable markup, and it really elevated the experience. Maxwell's is definitely one of the Fargo areas best restaurants. I've been coming to Maxwell's for 8 years now for business dinners and every visit has been a terrific experience. The decor is well appointed without being overly lavish and as you enter the seating area you are treated to a view into the kitchen. Service is always prompt and friendly and the wait staff is knowledgeable about the seasonally varied menu. Dinner selections include a nice variety if game, beef, pork and seafood and are always plated attractively. On my most recent visit I enjoyed the surf and turf that featured a bison tenderloin filet and lobster claw accompanied my faro with sautéed mushrooms and roasted asparagus. It was delicious! The Waygu beef is also outstanding (as well as pricey!). The separate bar area has a nice selection of wines, craft cocktails and can make a great traditional cocktail. I also had my first smoked cocktail at Maxwell's, years before smoked cocktails became a thing. Go to Maxwell's, you won't be disappointed! read more

Have visited numerous times and have had nothing but great experiences. Whether you're seated in the bar or restaurant side, you can come to expect impeccable service. Reservations and walk-ins are welcome and you should not have a problem being seated. The various dinner options have fallen nothing short of expectation and the presentation of each entree is noteworthy. I would highly recommend the Surf and Turf. The bacon-wrapped bison with the lobster claw is tough to beat and my favorite amongst the meats I have had amongst the Hereford Reserve Beef Tenderlion and Pepper Seared New Zealand Wapiti Elk Tenderlion Steak. Their constantly rotating "Fish of the Moment" they share weekly on Facebook is also worth checking out. The last time my wife and I went, she ordered the Lime Seared Hawaiian Mahi Mahi with Cilantro Citrus Rice, Grilled Bell Peppers, Scallion-Ginger Vinaigrette, and Grilled Pineapple Salsa. The fish was amazing, which is what you come to expect with a fine dining restaurant like Maxwells in the Fargo-Moorhead area. Overall, Maxwells is always worth a trip for that special occasion or to eat a nice meal. Their prices are a little high compared to other fine dining restaurants in the area; however, the complementary grilled bread and lavosh is a nice touch for a starter. Ramon takes pride in the restaurant and more so in the wine offerings, which have consistently been awarded Wine Spectator's Award of Excellence, which to my knowledge, Maxwells is the only restaurant I know of in the state that has. Lastly, their happy hour runs from 4-8 pm and features $2 off all drinks, $3 off Bar Menu & Appetizers, & 1/2 off Cheese Platter w/ purchase of a drink. read more

This was my first time to Fargo and when we decided to come I was looking for an amazing restaurant and I found it. My husband and I ordered the Ahi for our appetizer. The flavors where light and good. Then we got the tomato capersse salad the mixture of flavors where just right. Every night had just the right amount of everything and the capers added just a touch of tang to it. Then omg then we got the special. It was a Mexican seasoned Grouper. We have never had grouper but will order it where ever we can find it. The grouper was pan seared with a mixture of spices, resting on top of a wonderful Spanish and black bean rice, chipotle compot top with a mango salsa. Our server Jen was the best ever. She chose my wine knew what I was looking for and her personality was out of this world. If I lived here I would eat here once a week. read more

Literally a waste of $40!!! They served me a BURNT, SALTY rib eye that I had to wait over an hour for!!!! It was the most disgusting piece of meat I've ever had! And 2 people at my table ordered the same dish and each one tasted burnt. I mean it's been an hour later and I still have the after taste . Apparently the bartenders were all new with one person training them, regardless, my friends had to wait 20min for each drink to come out. NEVER AGAIN will I ever set foot in this place! A lot of the beats are there but they're a bit haphazard and cheap. The food was creative, but took a long time to come out and had obviously been sitting for a while as the salmon I got was overdone. Good draft beer menu, and gets a bit of a bump for being one of the nicer places in a city with not many upscale attempts, but overall pretty disappointing. read more

Had 2 surprises here. 1st surprise is that the food is awesome here because it's in Fargo. We were not expecting greatness. We ordered crab cakes, spinach bacon salad, grilled lobster fettuccine with squid ink pasta, and walleye. The appetizers and entrees were so good, especially the lobster pasta. The sauce was richly incredible with bits of lobster and spiced with saffron. The grilled lobster tail was perfectly grilled with the house-made squid ink pasta, all very fresh. The bacon in the salad was soft in texture. I have never had bacon soaked in balsamic before to get this type of texture. The balsamic is high quality along with the fruits & veggies that came with it. The Walley with basmati rice was spiced nicely and was a wonderful lite dish perfect for Summer. The 2nd surprise was the dessert. It was unfortunately underwhelming. We ordered the lava cake and it was rather dry. It needed more fudge in the center and better quality ice cream. The chocolate cake would probably taste better if made with Valrhona chocolate. Because the meal was so awesome, we had hoped the dessert would be too. Overall, we will return and highly recommend. 5 stars easy if dessert was of better quality. read more

Went to Maxwells recently for a special occasion dinner. We were early for our reservation intending to grab a drink at the bar; sadly it was too busy but our table was ready so we were seated. I really don't have any complaints, but rather some comments about - the details. The far back room has charming twinkle lights hung on the ceiling to create a different atmosphere. Here's the detail part - they were on a large wheel of lights (like the kind you buy at Menards at Christmas) and the wheel with the remaining lights was tucked (kind of) behind a fake plant sitting on two wine boxes in the back corner of the room. I get it, an inexpensive way to change the rooms vibe. But seriously, hide the rest of the unused lights in one of the boxes. It looked tacky and Maxwells isn't TGI Fridays. The food - delicious! The service, pretty good. However the server at the table next to ours explained the menu and specials in such a way that I was wishing they were our server so we could have had that experience prior to selecting drinks, appetizers, and dinner. Our server wasn't bad, just not as good as the one we could over-hear. Ours also was fully up to date on a change in one of the specials for the evening (which we had ordered- still delicious though), but the prep was different and that changed the dish enough to be worthy of knowing. Again, details. With entree prices falling mostly in the $30-$50 range, details should be spot on. read more

My wife and I stopped in for dinner. I made a reservation the day before. I spoke with Ramone who took the reservation and he was very polite. I had a 6pm reservation. When we arrived we were about 10 minutes early and we were greeted by Ramone who seated us with no wait time at all. He was very pleasant and courteous. Our waitress came through and we ordered two martinis. They were well prepared and tasty. we decided on the cheese platter as a appetizer. The platter came out and it was beautiful to look at and very tasty. The cranberry goat cheese was amazing. It also has olives, bread, crackers, three types of meat, two additional cheese options, candied wallnuts and a apricot jam. The entire platter was amazing. For the entree I had the rack of lamb and my wife had the beef tenderloin. Both were amazing. The lamb came with caramelized onion over a bed of garlic whipped potatoes and fresh broccoli. Hands down the best lamb I've had anywhere. Succulent and so well prepared. The beef tenderloin was also amazing. Tender, well seasoned and a goat cheese mushroom sauce. I had a bite and it was amazing. Overall the experience was great. A place to come to celebrate a special occasion or just to enjoy a good drink at the bar. When in Fargo and want the best I would argue this may be it from what I have experienced. Must try! read more
