This is a tiny grocery store near rittenhouse square. What is very notable about Maxx's produce is the quality of the produce and variety of drinks. If you want more exotic ingredients like shiitake mushrooms, nuts, and different oils and sauces, Maxx's produce may have them. While the prices for some of packaged food is quite high, the produce is very appropriately priced. Most importantly, the produce is extremely fresh. In fact it is noticeably fresher than all other grocery stores in the nearby area. The green onions are placed into bits of water to keep fresh. There are all the basic vegetables like onions, potatoes, tomatoes, etc. There are many drinks too but this are on the expensive end. $5 card minimum. read more

They lost me as a customer today. We have been going there for (overpriced) produce and odd groceries for some time. Today, we bought 2 things, one was Cole slaw in a leaky container. I asked her to put it in a plastic bag. She took her finger and pointed at some bags across the aisle. I walked over and took one but will not be back. Customer service? We were the only people in the store and she was sitting down. I do not think pointing is an appropriate way to attract customers. read more

I love this place! They've everything! Also they take requests. I wish they had a website and delivered. They're so nice. Can't believe I haven't reviewed Maxx's after nearly seven years of amazing service! The wife and husband who own this store are great. The wife is so pleasant. Her voice soothes me just like a preschool teachers. ( shout out to Mrs. Corcoran!) She is always helpful giving you tips on how to keep your produce/fruit fresher, recipes, which chocolate is really good. They carry a really well edited variety of things. Especially baking items, yesterday I noticed black-strap molasses! Certain items are cheaper here than at Food and Friends. Mustard was a buck cheaper here. Their produce is excellent. Their fresh cut up fruit is divine plus it comes with a free banana. On fridays get here early for the bagels and challah from Rollings a kosher bakery in Elkins Park. Also during purim you can order hamentashen from the bakery. A big perk is freshly squeezed oj, it's some of the best. Find it in the fridge towards the back of the store. You can't do all your shopping here, unless you are a very healthy vegan/vegetarian. In that case yay for you being so virtuous! However, you can certainly get all or most of your produce and some staples! Once you shop here a few times the owners will recognize you and ask how you are or where have you been! and remember things like how you don't like bananas. You will see the wife walking her cute little dog in rittenhouse square too, they live right above the shop. It's a great family owned shop I'm happy to support! read more

Expensive without reason. They sell Driscoll berry products as 2x the price you would get at a Fresh grocer/shoprite/aldi. 1 lb of baby carrots was $2 while it is 2-2lb bags/$5 at FG. Herbs were all $2. I only bought these few items because I didn't want to pay the $1 surcharge for using a credit card if the balance was less than $10. I will stick with FG and Aldi. My first and last time going to Maxx's produce. I think this store is for people who have specialized diets and do not want to spend Whole Foods Whole Paycheck prices. read more

Perfect neighborhood market! Everything you need and they're right around the corner. The owners are always very helpful and inquisitive about what we're making and suggesting new recipes. Agreed that this is definitely an excellent, "Oh shit, I really need a..." shop. Owners/folks who work there are super nice and know where things are/if they have what you're looking for. Soft NPR or classical music over the air. Celestial Seasonings tea, Soy Vey, cheese, chicken/veg/beef broth, and pasta sauce on the shelves. For a tiny place, it packs a punch. They have a decent selection of produce but especially the staples -- garlic, potatoes, onions, lemons, etc. -- so if, hypothetically speaking, you're making stir fry and you realize you're an idiot and you're out of ginger, this is the place to go. They also have the non-produce staples, too -- bread, dried spices, milk, eggs, etc. More importantly, they carry almost every variety of Bobbi's Hummus. A.K.A. the best hummus ever known to man. So when you're hurting for dinner ideas, pita + Bobbi's jalapeno + cucumbers + any other random crudites = satisfaction. read more

This is actually from my FB status - As usual, the lovely woman at the local grocery store handed me the receipt after I bought a bag of goodies - freshly squeezed orange juice, baby kale, blueberries, and chocolates. I didn't realize that she in fact gave me something else until I was about to walk out. That was a tube of throat drops that I didn't pay for. I went back, full of surprise: "how did you know that I need that?" She responded with a kind smile: "I noticed that you were coughing when you walked in." Kindness is something we can give without strings attached (btw since when have we become too busy for that?) Great little corner store. As you would expect with all corner markets it is a little bit more expensive but the convenience and the friendly staff make up for this and make it an excellent "Oh shit, I really need a..." shop. The fresh juice is a nice touch. The OJ and pink Grapefruit are lovely. I tried the Orange, Carrot and Beet and it was a bit earthy for me but no doubt some will like it. read more

Love it. This isn't a replacement for your grocery store (at least not if you're looking for raw meat products and a freezer section) but it's a fantastic place to swing into any time. They have so much crammed into such a small space! Great Lebanese flatbread, fabulous fresh fruit cups made on premises (steeply priced, but always bursting with flavor), superb produce (Persian cucumbers), a ton of bulk nuts, dried fruits, trail mixes. Two things I always go for: their fresh-squeezed juices (in the case with the milk in the back) and their farm-fresh eggs (in the produce case). I just wish that, being Korean-owned, they had home-made kimchi. :( But then, if they had that, I'd never leave. read more

This place is wonderful. Most of the prices are excellent, and the owners are super friendly and helpful. The selection is pretty great - not a ton of items, but many well 'curated' things, such that you can get most of what you need. Produce is fresh and is between cheap and reasonable. Sue's produce is slightly cheaper for some items, but overall this place is very affordable for fresh produce. On occasion, I wish they wouldn't carry certain organic products over non-organic produce, especially if that means there's only one brand/option of that particular product. For example, they carry parchment paper, but only recycled/eco-friendly parchment that costs $5.50 for a small roll, rather than a more affordable brand. I like what Keith said. This is where I buy certain things... produce, salad dressing, cheese. It's a tiny Mom & Pop type market, and the staff is so, so friendly and appreciative of whatever business is brought. They routinely have produce in baskets outside on sale, which always lures me in. I just love the way Maxx's is laid out. They make food shopping exciting, and it's got that nostalgic feel of the grocery stores I remember as a kid, before the corporations main-lined steroids and chased these guys away. I wanted to give these guys more than just a one-liner. First, don't let the 4 stars fool you. The store is a 5 star store, but the prices are just a little high to earn that 5th star from me. To get 5 stars you gotta be good and a bargain. This store is great. I walk out of my way past a produce store closer to my home to shop here. The produce is fresh. They also sell a lot of homemade type things, like chicken salad, artichoke dip, etc. They have a nice selection of herbs and spices. They prepare fresh cut fruits and vegetables if you don't like to chop 'em yourself. They have bread, meat, and cheese. Overall, a clean store with fresh stuff and a nice selection. This spot is legit. Kim and her husband have built a solid neighbourhood grocery option. The produce is always on point and Kim always takes care of me. The first time I went in I was getting ingredients to make a sandwich, Kim rung me up, I paid, then she said "oh you forgot lettuce," and gave me a bag of mixed greens on the house. What awesome service! Another time my friend and I were caught in a rainstorm without an umbrella (we were using a garbage bag we acquired from the hardware store down the street), and Kim gave an umbrella for our walk home! She's such a great human that it's worth the extra few bucks on some of the packaged goods for the convenience and to support a great local business. read more

We are loyal fans of Maxx's produce! Our family has been regular customers ever since they opened. Fruits vegetables, lunches, cookies, cereal, pasta, peanut butter, yogurt... you name it they have it! They are well-stocked with tons of product! Youngju, the owner is super friendly, and very sweet with my kids often giving them a little chocolate or cookie when we stop in. When Maxx's first opened we asked them if they could carry Claudio's pesto and mozzarella balls, Claudio's Store is in the Italian market in a bit of a hike. Youngju accommodated our request and has carried it ever since, and for years we have continued to have our weekly pesto pasta with tomatoes and mozzarella dinner. Also have a great selection of chocolate, bars behind the counter, lint truffles near the check out, and always have some fun new product they are testing near the checkout as well. This is my go to neighborhood bodega, and there are other choices in the neighborhood. The warmth and kindness of the lady who works here is unmatched, and pleasantly different from the grungy attitude that some other stores in the neighborhood have. The owner was in once and I asked him why I didn't see his usual half gallons of fresh squeezed OJ and he said he didn't like there taste of the current crop. Pretty good sign of the quality he expects and sells Recently the lovely lady who works here generously gave my fiancé and I a couple bananas and a loaf of bread before a long road trip we had. Where else in today's busy world does someone have time for kindness? She has forever won my customer loyalty. Also, they get fresh Amish eggs every Friday which are delicious and I hope I don't lose mine by spreading the secret on here. I don't necessarily buy every product I need here but I admit to thinking about what I can find there just so I can stop in, get a few things (eggs, oj especially), and support a local store. read more

Maxx's produce is what service is all about. They treat you really well striking up conversation, telling you what's in season and advising you based on your purchases. They know their frequent customers and that's how a neighborhood store should be. The produce comes in from all over the world and ranges from vegetable to fruits to nuts to juices. I will ALWAYS pick up a bag of kale and their coconut chocolate bars, two of the million cool finds I have found here. They have almond butter!!! I can only find Justin's Nut Butter only for over $10-13 bucks online! But they sell it here for $7 so WOO HOO! A lot of paleo and health-related things in here. What are you talking about? This place is brilliant. The owners are fantastic, the staff is helpful - if you want something special, they'll find it for next time. The prices are cheaper on fruits and vegetables than Whole Foods Market or Rittenhouse Grocer, and just as fresh. The cut fruit is fantastic. Packaged goods (crackers, granola) are hit and miss price-wise, but the overall tab is always in your favor. I love this quaint little place in Rittenhouse! It has a great selection of fresh produce. One of employees noted that the owner buys the produce in the afternoon, not the morning when produce is not as palatable. I find the pricing very reasonable. Too often, you pay an 'arm and a leg' in Rittenhouse; but not so with this place. For what you get, you get a great 'bang for your buck'. I think what tops this place off is the customer service. The stockers are always very friendly. But most of my contact is with the very attractive young cashier. She is always happy and very conversational. If they don't have something, she is always very willing to tell the owner. Again, I highly recommend this place. Don't go anywhere else for produce! read more
