This is one of my favorite places to have lunch or dinner at when I'm near Buffalo. Its been far too long since I've been here. It's a cozy little place; warm and welcoming. Lunch prices are very affordable, in fact, cheaper than a lot of places that I've been too. Lunch meals include a soup, and white or fried rice. It's a good size portion, its sure to fill you up. I am a Pad Thai aficionado, having had the dish in many restaurants in the U.S., and abroad. Although my wife and I have been long-time take-out customers of May Jen we never tried their Pad Thai until we dined it. WOW! It was easily the best Pad Thai I have experienced! The noodles were light, tender, supple, and seasoned perfectly; there was an excellent selection of greens; and the chopped peanuts -- de rigueur with Pad Thai -- were chopped nicely small. And as one who enjoys spicy food I requested extra spicy, and that, too, was perfect. Lastly -- and a surprise -- the portion was quite large, easily enough for two dinners. May Jen did not disappoint as the food was tasty and fresh. The small dining room is bright and clean. They do have a nice lunch menu that runs about $10.75 for a combination meal with a choice of several soups, a main course ( such as tangerine chicken or sweet and sour chicken) and egg fried rice. You can add on am egg roll for $1.75. Our waiter was very friendly and pleasant . Our meal ended with a complimentary fortune cookie. A couple things to note: there is no complimentary tea, but several choices of beverages to order and parking is best down at the plaza just past M&T bank. As there is no street parking directly in front of side of restaurant as it is on a corner. They do have a couple of off street parking spaces on the divided side street for quick order pick ups. Had it delivered thru Door dash and they gave me wrong size duck sauce, I paid over $6 for a pint, they gave me 1/3 of a cup if I am lucky and door dash wouldn't reimburse me, the wonton soup was flavorless, and the Happy Family was disgusting!! Cool little Little gem Buffalo serving the most delicious Chinese food. Blink-and-you'll-miss-it, so keep your eyes wide open for this place. Our server, Tom, was the friendliest and most engaging person. He really made the night relaxing and fun. They are a small place and require reservations as well as your vaccine card or excelsior pass. This contributed to the safe environment. I had some of the best wine i've ever had with their Cabernet Sauvignon - highly recommended. I had dim sum for the first time, and I was not disappointed. We ordered the crispy beef, which was good and the Cantonese triple delight, which was even better. Everything was hot, fresh, and flavorful. Pick up times are never accurate. Waited almost an hour past the due time for food. Food was okay, sauces tasted like they came from a jar.

The place is small, but can seat about 50 people. Lunch time was busy and the one man serving/ hosting kept a happy demeanor, even as he ran around. The hot and sour soup is not super spicy and has a little heat on the back palette from the red pepper flakes. The crab rangoons come with a peanut soy sauce that actually tastes better than the normal orange gloop sauce most places serve them with. The General Tso's chicken has a tangy sauce that's not super spicy, and it is liberally slathered over the dish with a large portion of rice to accommodate all the chicken. The chicken was over the top breaded and actually had chicken in them!! A welcome surprise. In all honesty, the food here is actually delicious. My brother and I ordered over $50 worth of food just to try everything. The fried rice was delicious. The dim sum was much better than I expected, and the sesame chicken had a great flavor. Even the egg rolls had good flavor. I was overall impressed with the food. I was not really impressed with the service. I will give them slack - it was a Friday night and they were busy. (Mind you, when we arrived they weren't busy... they got gradually busy as we sat there) But they only had three people working, and our waiter would disappear for up to ten minutes at a time, so our refills on water and the like never happened until after we had eaten all our food. Also, he kept forgetting things... I felt bad for him, like the checklist in his head was all jumbled together and he kept trying to rearrange it. But he was nice, and by the end of the meal I was just cringing, wanting to get up and just help him with ANYTHING. The dining experience took us an hour and a half, when it definitely shouldn't have taken over an hour. I was feeling antsy and very much ready to go by the time our check had been placed down. I went here for lunch on Friday and it was awesome. My friend and I were left completely satisfied. I kept talking to my boyfriend about it the rest of the weekend and in the same week I scored a double play at May Jen's. So, my dad has an addiction, but in a good way, to the cuisine at May Jen. I tried to remember the last time I has Chinese food that didn't come from the ubiquitous paper and foil containers and it had been a long time. They used to have an outlet on the famed Elmwood Avenue back in the day, but now, you must get thineself to Kenmore ave to behold their awesomeness. I don't mean to sound over the moon, but this isn't assembly line throw together the sweet and sour whatever, but stuff done with some care and made to order, presented as if it is something, because it is. I heartly recommended affording yourself some Tangerine Chicken and an Egg Roll (Pork) and a fine ale (I opted for that longtime Chinese favorite Sam Adams). They do some take out, but it is a restaurant first and a take out source second. That may sound nitpicky, but that actually does matter. May Jen is one of the few Chinese food places where you actually do see people eating, in the restaurant, off plates, at a nice table. I did take home a plastic container...with the remnants of my entree. May Jen, how you have failed me. I grew up sitting in your booths, noshing on my chicken and broccoli. I had the nast-nasty-nastiest dinner there the other night. The "crispy beef" was deep fried into pieces of mealy grizzle. My chicken in garlic ginger sauce was sweetened with the unpleasant tang of corn syrup. I was just, um, repulsed. This is such a great Chinese take out joint. Anytime I want this type or food on the go, it is always May Jen! White meat chicken is so refreshing among these parts and this alone is why I love coming here. I haven't tried too much here but enough to know I have never had anything remotely bad. Because I get this on occasion, I usually go for the more "Americanized" dishes but have ventured into the wild a few times. With this being said my go to is their delightful tangy and sweet sesame chicken. I recommend it without the spinach though. I also get it with vegetable fried rice, an egg roll, as well as their excellent hot and sour soup. My combo above is offered for their lunch special which is until 3 on most days. I feel like this place could be pretty decent if it was in the right neighborhood. My beef hor fun tasted close enough to what I was expecting which was a pleasant surprise. They can keep serving their General Tso's to the general public, but I think they can actually cook real Chinese food back there and if I'm to guess, I don't think too many ppl order that. Their biggest problem is they're in a location where they'd need lower prices to compete w/ the piece of shit that is China King. They could get away charging what they do in Amherst or Williamsville but being next to a college campus/in the middle of a ghetto, I think they need to knock off a few dollars off each dish. May Jen is still fantastic. We ordered take out from here recently, Nothing too complicated - just ginger garlic chicken, general tso's chicken and beef with broccoli. It is pretty normal "american chinese" but it is way better then most of the fast food places in the area. I love the ginger garlic chicken especially, it is light and the chicken is much better then fast food chinese which is usually what we get. It's a little pricier then the normal chinese food we order, but definitely better tasting. I wish it was still on Elmwood, I'd eat there more. read more

Love it here - it is a sit down type of Chinese restaurant, with some of the best general tsos I have had. The restaurant is on the smaller side, however it was quiet when we were in there so there was no problem getting a table. I looked to my trusted Twitter followers to recommend me some great Chinese food. I received an overwhelming response to try May Jen. A quick google search revealed they had a website (+!!) I was sold. I called to order my food for pickup. The woman on the phone was friendly and answered my questions about menu items. When I arrived to pick up my food I was surprised at how nice (although entirely outdated) the dining room was. It seems like it would be a nice sit-down restaurant. I ordered my favorite take out dish, beef chow fun, which is something you can't always find. My fiance got a combination dinner of fried rice and sweet and sour chicken. His meal also came with some wonton soup and an eggroll. When I got home and started eating I was immediately overcome by the joy of satisfaction. The chow fun was some of the best I'd ever had, the vegetables were fresh and crispy (peppers, onions and bean sprouts) and the beef was of very good quality, no gristle! My fiance was not as pleased with his meal, which is disappointing. I have some other restaurants on my radar but I will long for the beef chow fun... mmm. read more

Quality Chinese food. Not greasy. Tried the walnut prawn - delicious! Dish was close to $20 but you get a good amount of jumbo prawns. First time I've seen this dish in Buffalo (had it several times in California chinese restaurants). Zucchini chicken also very tasty. Good.....not great, but certainly good enough that I'll return. I used to eat here long ago, but then for some reason just kinda forgot to go back. Then last night was in a "Chinese mood" and while thumbing through the good ole "Entertainment Book" my memory of the place was stirred.... and I'm glad it was. Two of us dined on soup (wonton for me and pork and shrimp dumpling with spinach in chicken broth for him). Both were good and there was lots of stuff in our bowls. I hate when there's just one tiny, sad wonton doing a back float in a sea of broth. My only complaint is that the broth could have been hotter. The shared pork eggroll was perfect.... hot, crisp, and full of yummy goodness. Brought back happy memories of my UB undergrad days when I'd grab a couple for lunch in between classes. Onto the entrees....again shared: Vegetable fried rice was a tad sticky, but had lots of great, crisp veggies including (my fav!) snow peas and lots of big stalks of broccoli. The stir-fried ginger garlic chicken had lots and lots of nice white chicken, but we both agreed that the sauce was a bit too sweet and not spicy enough. The best entree was the Hunan beef. Lots of crisp veggies, tender beef, and a wonderful, spicy sauce. We both loved that dish! Dined there last night (for the second time in a few months) and was pleased with the experience. Our waiter was very friendly and helpful. Our food was ready in a jiffy and it was quite delicious. I recommend the steamed veggies with chicken... a healthy option, and they give you enough for another meal. My gf went with the tangerine chicken, which tasted good... though very similar to General Tso's. Again, i could very well be WAY off on my review b/c i don't get Chinese that often, but i thought May Jen was pretty good. I'd love to hear from anyone about similar or better Chinese in Buffalo. We came here after the pace we were going to go to was closed. It turned out to be a great idea. After our old Chinese place closed (it's under new management, it should have closed though...) we have been on a quest to find a new place. Insofar as a lot of the dishes we have tried here, this seem like our new place.
