I recently decided to stop straightening my hair and let it go curly. I started researching ways to take advantage of the curl in my hair instead of fighting it, and I learned that there are hair stylists who have been trained specially to cut curly hair. I did a Google search and learned that the May-Rah-Kee salon had stylists trained to cut curly hair, so I made an appointment to get my hair cut by Nicole. I was a little hesitant but figured I didn't have much to lose. I'd gotten it cut by another stylist at a different salon in January, and while that stylist also specialized in cutting curly hair, I wasn't very impressed with the cut or the service. Nicole, however, went above and beyond. She did everything the other stylist should have done -- she consulted with me at the start, asking about my hair routine, the types of products I used, and what style I was considering. She even pulled up pictures on her laptop so she could make sure we were both on the same page with the style I was envisioning. She did a fantastic job on the cut, and my hair looks curlier than ever. She found curls I didn't know I had! And she gave me tips and suggestions on products to use and ways to encourage the curls. The other stylists in the salon and the receptionist were friendly and professional, and the overall atmosphere of the salon is bright and welcoming. This is going to be long but worth it as there are so many good things to say. I recently moved to the area from NY and was in search for someone I could trust with my hair. After scrolling through pages of reviews, I found May-Rah-Kee. After reading through reviews, scrolling through pictures, reading through their website and trolling their hashtags on Instagram, I decided to give them a try. They seemed like a good group of women who enjoy what they do and know how to have fun, and I mean really, if you're going to spend 2-4 hours looking like a sandwich covered in foil and plastic wrap, you should be with people who make you comfortable and know how to laugh. My first visit was in November with Stephanie. Being a new client, she listened very carefully to my hair woes and goals. She then took a conservative approach to test out the waters and give my hair a chance to outgrow my "at-home trims" that left some very awkward lengths. Her color work was phenomenal - the education I received on the Florida water vs hair color was life saving - and cut lasted well past what should've been my next appointment (I'm terrible at going when I should and always wait until my hair way to outgrown). My next visit was in late February with Stephanie again. She took the time to give me a very fun cut and yet again, amazing color work. 3 hours later, I'm more in love with my hair than I ever have been. She gets me and has the skill to make my hair match my personality. I enjoy understanding why things are done a certain way and I love listening to people who are passionate about what they do. Stephanie takes the time to explain every snip of her scissors and stroke of her dye brush, into such depth and excitement that you can see how much she loves what she does. She also takes the time to explain how to repeat her style at home. I used to own my own business and work in a service industry and have for many years so perhaps I notice more (and might be a little more critical than others). The attention to detail is above and beyond what can ever be expected. Firstly, the salon is always clean, the bathroom is always clean and coffee is tasty - coffee is very important to me. Every inch of the salon is designed to be functional and pleasant to look at, after all, who wants to stare at themselves in a mirror for hours. The artwork is always changing and is beautiful to examine while waiting for your color to set. Now to the important part, it had been 3 months in between my appointments with a woman I had met once. She remembered details from our first conversation that I had forgotten we had. That speaks volumes about the level of service. She is always attentive to making sure you are comfortable and happy throughout the entire process. I've had many hair dressers in my years and most were good but it took a very long time for me to trust them. I could tell right away that I could give Stephanie free reign and she would give me both a fun, light look that was also professional and repeatable. She is a human being and fun to work with but also a true, knowledgeable professional and most importantly considerate and consistent. So if you're looking for quality and value in the services you receive, this is absolutely the place to go. read more
