I called Dr. Patel's office. He has so many phone numbers; it is so confusing. The receptionist answered and said "Hello", but not too friendly. So, I asked if this is Dr. Patel's office. She said "Yes". She could have said, "Hello, this Is Dr. Patel's office. How can I help you?" I asked her if they are accepting new patients and she said, "Yes". I asked if they are accepting Medicare. She said, "Yes, but need a secondary", which we do. She asked if it is PPO, and I said, "Yes". Then she said, you need a referral from a doctor". So I said, "What? We have PPO not HMO". Then she said, "We are so busy you need a referral". What the F? So, I said, "Thank you and goodbye". I have been through stage 4 metastatic prostate cancer. Dr Patel was my urologist. I went in for exams every 12 months as he recommended. I always told him the meds he was giving me over the years never worked. Instead of doing a mri or biopsy he told me he could do a surgery that was not yet medicare approved but the future. I did not want to be an experiment. He was treating me for benign hyperplastic prostate. He was confident my case was not malignant because I had very low psa and no family history. He claimed my issue was age related. I continued to have issues went to another urologist and the biopsy showed the advanced cancer. I've seen this doctor a few times, he's nice and seems knowledgeable. His office, however, is very inefficient and not particularly friendly. Following the old axiom that "how you do one thing is how you do everything," I'm not left feeling terribly confident in the practice overall. I had a prostatectomy going on nine years ago now; PSA levels are still too low to measure, knock on wood. I was referred to Dr. Patel by my urologist after a positive biopsy, and having been given the choice between a prostatectomy or radiation treatment. After meeting with doctors in both fields I went with the surgery. He explained very clearly what the biopsy result numbers meant, where everything was located anatomically-wise, how the surgery would be performed, and what I could expect in the future. As I was wheeled into the operating room he even pointed out the various robotic surgery equipment because he knew I had been interested in that. I either have a uti or kidney stone. If you've ever had either you know the pain comes fast and is relentless. I had similar symptoms last year and ended up going to urgent care. And when they determined it was a kidney stone, I had to redo all labs with a urologist. So this time I thought: why not save time and money and go straight to my local urologist. I called. He's busy. All good. As a matter of fact: congratulations! I asked to please come by to just do the urine test with his office to see what it is so I wouldn't have to duplicate tests. I offered for them to even charge my copay without seeing the doctor, I just don't want to do duplicate tests at urgent care and then here. Then if it's a kidney stone, I can continue my care with your doctor. The response "No go to urgent care." No explanation. No compassion. I find the lack of care at a doctor's office appalling. Where do you think you are? West LA?! This is the valley for goodness sakes! We're supposed to be more humane and down to earth here. I'll be taking my $8,000+ kidney stone elsewhere. read more

I finally got good PPO health insurance with my new job. I looked up a good urologist here on Yelp. I have been having problems with kidney stones and blockages. Doctor sent me for some tests to be done, and to see a nephrologist. Hopefully it's nothing too serious. He explained things in terms someone without a medical degree can understand. Whole office staff is nice and was not to hard getting an appointment as a new patient either, I go back end of month. This review is the most sincere expression I can write. I was originally referred to Dr Patel by my internist Daniel Rosen who saw an elevation in my PSA count. He suggested I meet with Dr Patel who he felt would be a good fit for me in diagnosing what was going on. I had never before been to a urologist and was very uneasy about what would this would be. I made the appointment and was greeted by a warm engaging smile who explained all of the details of what he wanted to do on my first visit. I had a physical exam and ultra sound which did not scream any alarms. After the exam he suggested that to be on the safe side he ordered up an MRI to provide more clarity as to why my PSA was elevated. I had the MRI which showed a probability that infact there was cancer in the prostate-to further provide proof positive he ordered a biopsy which confirmed the diagnosis. Needless to say I was very concerned but Dr Patel spelled everything out for me and explained in detail various coarse of action that was available to me clearly and in a manner that all of the tools to make the best decision for me. All the while I asked him if I was his dad how would you advise me. He responded the same way as what we were discussing. He carefully explained the robotic surgery to me and all that went into it.A date was set for the surgery and he explained the procedure in detail as well as the after care so there would be no surprises or concerns. The surgery went off perfectly and I was home after 3 days. I was in contact with him during that period on any question I had and never did I ever get the feeling from him that I was bothering him. He made himself available! His professional staff made the process very easy and comforting to me. To express the thanks I have would be an understatement. I have been in severe discomfort for four days straight. Have been to ER and was seen by a PA and NP. Have also been seen by my internist who told me that it was vital that ai be seen by a Urologist. I am an existing patient here and to be seen as an emergency. They said they can get me an appointment in one month! Or I could be seen by their NP this week. I had gone to my primary Dr a couple months ago due to a pain I had on my back, I found out had a 24mm kidney stone. I was referred to a urologist in Thousand Oaks, which that Dr had told me ,he will have to schedule me in 2 diff days to get my stone out because of the size, long story short I end up going to Dr Patel, he was able to lasered it out in one procedure, I have to say it all went very well, 6 days after my procedure I had my stent removed, which that wasn't as bad as I expected. Dr Patel is awesome. He is extremely compassionate, listens to all of your questions and provides understandable and clear answers. The first time I met him I felt totally at ease. I had symptom free prostrate cancer that was discovered via PSA testing. It was monitored for several years and when I met with Dr. Patel about one year prior to scheduling surgery he explained everything in detail. When I decided to schedule the surgery he again discussed each item in detail. I had robotic surgery at Providence Tarzana Hospital, they are fantastic,and was released from the hospital the next afternoon. He keep my wife informed of the progress and outcome of the surgery, it was a very difficult one. The follow up care has been fantastic. The office staff answer questions and provide top notch assistance. I am happy to say that it has been 2.5 months since the surgery and thanks to the blessing of the Lord, prayers, and the excellent care by Dr. Patel and his staff. All is back to normal.
