Easily one of my favorite New Mexican spots in grass valley! This place is so cute inside and seating is plentiful Service here is outstanding I have zero complaints We all ordered tacos and left here with the biggest smiles on our faces truly amazing food The drinks here are STRONG not a complaint just a warning I loved my watermelon margarita. *review based on brief bar experience only - no food* It was an interesting experience for us as we wandered in for drinks while we waited for our Thai food we ordered Nextdoor. The bar is directly at the entrance, and they seemed to have gotten busy just shortly after we arrived. We had someone take our order, then another person take our order awhile later stating it wasn't inputted. When asking the bar tender for recommendations, he was less than helpful. He seemed like he wasn't very experienced at the bar, and after observing for awhile we realized that everyone in the restaurant seemed to be wearing all hats. Seating, serving, tending bar, ect. I think they could definitely benefit from some structured responsibilities for the individuals on staff- you know what they say- jack of all trades but master of none. At the end of the day, our drinks were okay, but we watched them pour one directly out of a can. They also didn't ask if we wanted blended margaritas or on Ice, so I guess next time I should plan to specify. I would try this establishment again, and look forward to the whole dining experience, in a few months. I think they just have a few kinks to work out :) read more

What a find! Located in a strip mall, Mayas food is legit. We stopped in for a late lunch and were warmly greeted. The guacamole was the best I've ever enjoyed. The service was friendly, warm, and with a bit of humor. Our table ordered several dishes and we enjoyed each one. Servings were generous, and the space is large enough for large groups. Had food here while staying in Grass Valley this past week. Surprisingly there are a lot of Mexican options in the area but we feel we made a great decision. Food was super fresh and they made it really quick. Little bit spicier than expected but still really good - it took my wife a couple days to finish hers (portions are huge). Stopped by for Sunday brunch around 12:30 PM. The bar didn't have any beers on tap, which was a bit disappointing. The place was fairly empty for a Sunday afternoon. I ordered the Quesabirria tacos. The food arrived quickly, and the presentation was appealing. Unfortunately, the flavor didn't match the visuals..the tacos were bland and under-seasoned, and the consommé was mostly fat with little flavor. The interior of the restaurant was nicely done, creating a great atmosphere. I just wish the food lived up to it. On a side note: Am I the only one bothered when servers chew gum while talking or taking orders? The service could use improvement. Our server took the order, someone else brought the food, and then no one came back to check on us or see if we needed anything else. After reading the reviews, we were expecting a so-so lunch but were with a large group so had no choice. The ambiance is good, with plenty of Mexican decorations so a 4. Service was prompt and friendly so another 4+. Chips and salsa were already on the long table. Salsa was tasty and fairly spicy so about 4 but the chips were not that good, a 2. Speed of service was very good, especially with the number of people at the table. A 4+. But the Super Burrito was large but bland. A good amount of meat but not that much flavor and no heat from the spices. It required a lot of Tapatio to make it half way Mexican. Prices are too high, especially for what you get. In short, a restaurant looking very Mexican but aimed at folks wanting a south of the border atmosphere without the flavor. The atmosphere and service were wonderful. The waitress, an older lady, was very kind and welcoming. She was prompt with our orders and serving of chips and salsa. The chips lacked flavor and with the addition of salt tjey were decent. Unfortunately, the food was not heated up and served cold. It was cooked, but cold. I understand that food needs to be precooked and then assembled. However, they did not prepare the burrito as ordered leaving out the beans, avacado, and sour cream. To make matters worse the burrito was cold, absent of all heat. We were afraid to complain about it so my husband ate it anyways. My dish was mediocre and I ate the rice but the beans were cold and the birria (meat) was cold and too liquidity. I just opted to eat the tortillas and rice. We were never brought refills of our waters but we did have 2 tables of guests with us so perhaps they didn't think we needed it. We would definitely give the restaurant another chance because it was a nice, clean, and authentic Mexican restaurant. I would just ask that the food be heated up, maybe. read more

This is the first time I have been here since Covid. It is located in Grass Valley in the same large shopping center as Raleys....Pet Smart..India Oven..Dollar Tree..and more. PROS: I ordered to go at 3 pm today...not very busy at this time. I like that they have a children's menu for my nieces visiting me. They no longer have the complimentary salsa bar...it has been replaced by a full bar instead. One children's plate with enchilada and rice and beans was 7.50. The children's plate with bean and cheese burrito (very big!) Was 6.00. Both my relatives liked it but my niece said the bean burrito tasted like Taco Bell! I did not order any of their adult meals so I cannot comment on that...but they did look good! The food came out quickly. I did get a small basket of chips and salsa to go (free with order). Chips were warm but a bit stale for my liking. Salsa was great and not too spicey. CONS: I ordered a glass of white wine while waiting for my order to be prepared. I get the bill and it was 6.99! I asked the waitress if I had ordered a mixed cocktail how much would it be...only 3.50! I think they have the drink prices backwards! They also have happy hour on Tuesdays.. First time trying Mayas & we were pleasantly surprised. We did an online order for carry out & upon pickup the staff were friendly and helpful. My fiancé loved the Birria tacos & is happy to know we have these nearby. We also had the chicken tostada & chicken nacho fries. Both were packed with flavor & lots of fresh toppings! The dishes were a lot bigger than expected. We got a side of the rice & beans which were pretty delicious! The refried beans have a pretty savory taste compared to most Mexican restaurants but they weren't too over powering. The queso dip is amazing & the salsa is fresh. Mayas has the best Horchata that we have ever had! Unlike most places it wasn't grainy, overly sweet or too milky. Every sip was smooth, full of cinnamon & the right amount of sweet. ( this is a must have with every order moving forward) The restaurant itself is quaint, clean & has a nice bar for customers to sit back and relax. We have lived near Mayas for 2 years & are happy to have given it a try. Supporting local restaurants & trying new things did not disappoint!! read more

We have been happy regular customers at Mayas for about 3-4 years. However, today was a disaster. Went in for a light lunch at noon, and only one other table was in use. We were welcomed by a server who seem disinterested and upset that we had come in. she and another worker were behind the counter talking, laughing, and singing. They seemed irritated that a customer came in. At the table she was rude and dismissive. Our soft drink order was wrong, but we decided we could live with it. When the food order came, it too was not how we had ordered it. Could we easily change it? No, we were being ignored. I can see mistakes if the chef is hammered with orders. But that was not the case. I know there is quite a turn over in the fast food industry. We will just wait until perhaps a new staff will arrive. Maybe 12 months from now. read more

Sad bc it doesn't rate 1 star.. The service was horrible no hello after 10 mins the lady behind the counter threw chips and salad at us, didn't say one word or ask if we wanted a drink. Another lady came around the corner was stuck on the computer for about 10mins we asked if we should order at the counter and she was staring at the computer doing what no one knows.. Still no drinks, but alright than the phone was ringing than she put them on hold and continued to stare at the computer for a bit longer then got back on the phone got off the phone and stayed at the register for a long while, we waited a bit longer.. This place is very weird. The food is good but the service and vibes are always off. They show us to our table and then don't bring us menus so we have to go back to the front to get them ourselves. Chips were stale and salsa watery. They have no prices for their margaritas on the menu- their "happy hour" is $1 off drinks and outside of the restaurants says "join us for taco Tuesday" but my husband and I just paid $70 for 2 margaritas and 6 tacos. Like what?? On taco Tuesday during happy hour? $12 margaritas with no indication of any happy hour price (which we would know if the price had been on the menu in the first place). We had been here several years ago and been underwhelmed, but on a recent visit, things were much improved. It used to be a place where you ordered at the front counter and they brought your food to your table. Now it's table service, beginning to end. Great improvement! The entry and the division between ordering takeout and dining in seemed a bit awkward. Once seated, I was given chips and salsa. The salsa was spectacular. The chips were average and obviously made offsite. The guy managing the front door and takeout orders was also waiting on me at a nearby table. He took my order without issue. I ordered a shrimp fajita salad that was beyond excellent. All of the ingredient were fresh and nicely seasoned. The lettuce, tomato, cucumbers and avacado were cool, crisp and fresh. The fajita vegies were warm, crisp and fresh. The shrimp was plentiful and delicious. It was one of the best salads I have had in many years. read more

My parents and I stopped by Maya's on a cold rainy day for lunch and all three of us were really impressed. The service was friendly and efficient..The bathrooms were well appointed and nice and clean. The food was excellent. My parents both had Huevos Rancheros - two different ways and both were delicious. My dad had Huevos Rancheros with Chile Verde on top, and my mother had Huevos Rancheros with her eggs scrambled-excellente. I had a Taco, Enchilada, & Chile Relleno-all of which were very good-even left over. Rice and beans were very good and the side of flour tortillas were homemade. Quality of food was the issue. Dry carne asada and stale nachos. Mexican food is really difficult to mess up, but you managed to do it.

We had the three meat fajitas and they were phenomenal! Each meat was delicious by its self, but even better together! The dish and the sides were perfectly hot when they came out. They now have a full bar. I've never had a mandarin margarita; it was lovely. Plus the juice is local. The salsa was great and the chips were just the right texture- light and crispy. We topped it off with a fantastic churro. We sat at the bar and had had great service and fun conversations with the staff. If it's slow- it's worth the wait! I am new to this area (about 1 1/2 years). We moved from Sothern California. We are accustom to some pretty good Mexican food. We have also spent some time all over Mexico. So I think we have a pretty good feel for this type of cuisine and what we like. We do have a place we really like in the area but they were closed due to a power outage. We had been here once before and to be honest I was not that impressed the first time but our friends really like it so I thought we would give it another shot. This time was even worse. We ordered cocktails...They were bad. Granted I did not specify top shelf alcohol but they over poured the house stuff and just made the drinks even worse. I ordered the Sopes which is a favorite of mine and these were just awful. I have never had Sopes this bad in my life. The masa was undercooked (a little gooey inside) and not really crisp as most are. The toppings tasted terrible. One of us ordered a burrito with no onions. Of course it came with extra onions. Our 3rd person seemed happy enough with her food so I gave the place 2 stars instead of 1. Service was fine. Although the server who took our order never really came back and the bartender ended up bringing out our food and asking if we needed anything else. The server was not on break she was around just never finished serving us or checked on us. Maybe this place is good for some people but just not for me. read more

An interesting place to eat. Not quite one thing or the other, but good none the less. If I went back, which I probably will, I will have more of the smaller bites, which were better than the entries. The mole was excellent, and I wish I'd ordered the traditional mole versus the pumpkin seed mole. The traditional one was great, smoky, complex, layers of flavor. The small bites with multiple tastes are excellent also- just mysterious enough so that you wondered what was in them but couldn't really guess. The atmosphere was as loud as it could be without being deafening. I hope someday for restaurants to attend to the fact that large boomy rooms and alcohol are echo chambers for the stupid. When I arrived there was no one to greet us. I had to go find someone after waiting a couple minutes. The hot sauce bottle of Tapito was hard and crusty. We recently moved to the area and we were looking for a good Mexican restaurant. We tried others in the area that were ok, but not great. Maya's was the next one on our list to try, and we're so glad we did. We finally found our spot!! Great enchiladas (real homemade enchilada sauce), ceviche, Maya's tacos, and nice thin/crispy tortilla chips. Also loved their salsa.
