I have been wanting to try this place. Stopped by here for dinner on Thursday evening. The place gives a vibe of an old arcade room. Server was attentive and promptly took our order. The complimentary chips, salsa and bean dip arrived quickly. The salsa was weirdly sweet and not enough flavor, chips were stale and chewy and beans were bland. I ordered bistec ranchero. The food arrived quickly. The steak was like a soup, no vegetables in sight. The sauce was flavorful but, it was not what was written in the menu. Overall food was very mediocre. Casa Las Katarinas has been one of our longtime favorites--ever since the days in Nevada City with the original owners, David and Delia. Since their move down to Alta Sierra, the magic has only grown. The new owners, Barbara M. and David M., have elevated everything while keeping the heart of the place intact. And the staff? They feel like family. Amy and Dakota are truly the best--warm, attentive, and always smiling. The food is authentically and consistently delicious. Their chile rellenos (baked, not fried!) are perfection, and the fish tacos are flat-out unbelievable. Whenever my family comes up from Silicon Valley, Casa Las Katarinas is always our first stop. From my veggie wife, to our vegan daughters, to our meat-loving sons-in-laws --everyone finds something they love. Absolutely a must-go. I'm sad to say but this was the worst dining experience I've had in a long time. It was Cinco de Mayo, and they were very busy. Most of the staff was doing their best, but one older male server was entirely clueless and could have better helped the situation. Besides watching multiple tables including ours, wait well over an hour (some people left), when we finally got our food, I was not impressed. The carne asada was incredibly salty and dry. A bunch of our chips were soft, like they had gotten wet, and the salsa didn't taste good. I gave this place a chance but that will be our last visit. read more

Supposedly they have a full bar but very few options for bourbon or whiskey. Actually only one option for bourbon. No foot rail on bar. Food on floor in front of bar. Very disappointing since this is one of two restaurants close to home. Sopes corn tortillas were not fresh. Could be so much better. I want to say excellent from walking in to the service to the delicious food. My pork carnitas were sublime. The two cheese enchiladas hubby ordered were wolfed down. We ate a pork tamale and I'll go back for my meal and take some tamales home. So good. The waitstaff outdid themselves, super friendly and accommodating. We will definitely go back. We first visited this restaurant five years ago when we moved to Alta Sierra, and honestly, we weren't impressed back then--so we hadn't been back since. But recently, I started seeing glowing reviews on social media and decided it was time to give it another shot. I'm so glad we did! The experience this time around was completely different. Everyone in our group ordered something different, and every single dish was a hit. The food was absolutely delicious, and the staff couldn't have been friendlier. A particularly thoughtful moment really stood out. Our waitress overheard us mention that it was our son's birthday. Without us saying much, she asked his name and wished him a happy birthday. Then, after we finished dinner, she and a few other staff members came out with a cake and sang to him. It was such a sweet surprise--and meant a lot to us since we hadn't made a point to mention it. I have been eating at this establishment for as long as they have been open, this is a review that has long been over due. I think subliminally I didn't want the secret to get out but you should know about this place. Casa Las Katarinas is hands down one of the best restaurants I've ever eaten at. Never once have I had a bad meal and now that they have the bar open and the Margaritas are flowing it has been our go to place period.. If you want great Mexican food check this place out if you are hungry get the Chimichanga (best on the planet), the fajitas are another staple as well as the fish tacos. I can be bought by Strawberry blended Margaritas and now that the bar is in full swing I'm in all the way... the service is outstanding and always so friendly and on top of it. They have really cleaned up the place since the last restaurant. It feels like they have a little more they are going to do but it is clean and open with tons of seating. You can take big parties and have plenty of room and not feel crowded.. in the long and short of this review is that I highly recommend Casa Las Katarinas give them a shot you will love it!! read more

Service, food and price are starters but of all the Mexican restaurants in Grass Valley and Nevada City this is our very favorite!!

I read they had vegan choices and found they have a whole vegan menu! Great place for hubs and I to eat together. We travel through this area weekly been wanting to stop. Their limited hours of opening at 3p has been hard to work around til today. I got the Enchiladas Veganas: Two Corn Tortillas stuffed with Black Beans, covered with our House Green Sauce. The house green sauce was outstanding and a pleasant surprise. My mamby pamby liquified green taco sauce. It was a flavorful chunky vegetable sauce that really made me feel I wasn't a vegan after thought. Our orders were to go because we had our dog with us. No outdoor seating, but lots of shady parking. We ate in the car. A new manager named Dakota was a delight and informational. Steering hubs and I through the menu being our first time. He also told us about plans to create an outdoor space for people with Togo orders with or without dogs to eat. read more

Well the first thing I noticed is the wait staff. Every one of them were so friendly, and accommodating. We felt special. We are new to the area and finally found a great Mexican restaurant. They serve scrumptious warm chips with an outrageous superbly flavorful salsa and a bean dip. I had the carnitas which were a plenty with huge cubes of the pork cooked to perfection. Yummy refried beans with a dollop of jalapeño maize and delicious Spanish rice with guacamole and pico de gallo. I could eat that maize all day long! What a fab flavor! All muy bueno! I got the corn tortillas and they were great served in a nice warming dish. My husband had one pork tamale and two cheese enchiladas. He loved his meal. I tasted the tamale and yea I'm getting that next time! I appreciate this new find for us. I can tell the restaurant has good business because they had a steady stream of customers throughout our stay. It's right off highway 49 on the way to Grass Valley. The Misses and I noticed the promo on Instagram for the Posole soup, and that's all it took for me to come in before it was all gone! I grew up on Posole so I have high expectations. The cook did not disappoint! The break was savory and comforting, the pork was so tender! They even included some Taquitos on the side! In addition, I also order the Carne Asada quesadilla as an appetizer, and I can honestly say its pretty much at the top of my quesadilla list! Came with nicely seasoned grilled steak, sautéed onions, and generous amounts of cheese. With a side of sour cream and guacamole, I was in Mexican food heaven. The service is always good, the waiters are always kind, and they always check on us to see if we need a refill on chips and salsa, refried beans, or water. For Grass Valley, I would have to say this is one of the best Mexican restaurants in the area. Check out Casa, they won't disappoint! read more

Decided to try our neighborhood Mexican restaurant. Overall the food was decent. Customer service was wonderful & the food was prepared quickly! (We did a to go order and called ahead for the drive-thru) My fiancé greatly enjoyed the burrito Suizo & thought it was very flavorful with tender meat and a great sauce. The tamalito was pretty dry and did not have a ton of flavor.. we added a bit of butter & cheese ourselves. I had asked for a side of queso to go with our chips however we got a cup of shredded cheese.. so make sure you specify queso dip. The chips lacked salt & the pico de gallo also lacked salt. We added a little bit of salt which did help! The house salsa is delicious. The carrot cake looks & smells amazing.. but the carrot flavor wasn't very strong. The texture of the cake is similar to gelatin. The price was about $54 + a tip. For the convenient location & neighborly feel, it is not that bad. However compared to other Mexican restaurants in Nevada county there is plenty of room for improvements:) read more

This is our favorite restaurant up here. Not just for Mexican food our favorite period. As I said in a previous review of another establishment I am fairly new here about 1 1/2 years from So Cal. We are accustom to some pretty good Mexican food. We have also traveled all over Mexico so I think we have a pretty good feel for this type of food and what we like. Funny enough the service was not that great the first time we came. It took 45 minutes to get our food. The server even brought us our check. When we told her we had not gotten our food she was shocked and quickly got it for us. Now, it was Valentines Day and it was fairly busy. Not LA busty but pretty busy. Normally this would have spurred a 1 star and a never return. But the food was SOOO good it is now our normal night out place. Unless they have no power. I get my normal dishes and change it up every once in a while and I have never had a bad dish yet. I would recommend this place to anyone...Keep up the good work and BTW that 1 time with iffy service was an anomaly the service here is amazing. read more

We have not eaten there since the chef Delia left. Figured it was Cinco de Mayo, so gave them a shot for drive thru. The enchiladas are soupy now, not the creamy red sauce anymore, more like a thin watery red sauce. They no longer include guacamole or sour cream either with the enchiladas, so if you were used to that... heads up. The staff is also totally different. Too bad. read more

Chill and quiet atmosphere. Out in Grass Valley for a job, stumbled upon this place and the food and service were all great.

We eat here at least once a month. Service and food are always very good. We get seated right away and chips & salsa & bean dip come quickly. The wait staff are vigilent to ask if we need anything. The manager is always on the move, keeping an eye out. Very nice man! I had shrimp enchiladas and partner had taco salad...both excellent. Prices are very fair...actually below what you would expect for this quality of food and service. The building is clean and well-appointed! We have never been disappointed here. read more

We have been coming to Casa Las Katrinas for years now. We enjoy the nice food, and convenience of a large take out menu and even a drive thru/pickup window for phone orders. Very convenient. Lately, Katrina's has been doing weekly specials for Friday and Saturday, and we tried the Chili Bean dip on a recent Saturday. It was absolutely delicious and a wonderful treat. If I had to criticize, I would focus on a stingy amount of (otherwise tasty and fresh) chips for to-go orders, and a lack of ground beef options. Otherwise, we are big fans of the southwestern/Mexican food and love all of Chef Delia's many creations. The Burro Diablo, Fajitas and fish tacos are all excellent choices. The Fajitas could stand more meat and less vegetables for the cost. Looking forward to the new owners additions of more ice cream and desert options. read more

This is my favorite place for Mexican food. Every dish I've tried has been wonderful especially the Chile Relleno! The service is always excellent. I only wish they had bar seating so that when you went alone you didn't have to sit at a table by yourself. And they always have the lights turned up so bright that we've asked and they very kindly turn the lights down to make it more of a nice dinner environment. Having relocated to Texas a couple of years ago and on a visit home, I would have to say that Katrina's is one of the worse Mexican meals I've ever had. I wanted to try it hearing there were new owners, but it's obvious they don't care and have no oversight or desire to create clean authentic Mexican food. Just looking for a quick buck I guess. Food tastes old. This location in all Its incarnations has always failed due to lack of quality and I suspect Katrina's won't last either. Best burritos ever! Have had both the vegetarian burrito and the chicken burrito and oh my gosh are they both amazing. Taquitos are very good too and the carrot cake is super moist and delicious. Have only ever picked up orders for takeout but the inside of the restaurant is very cute and clean. Would make a good date spot. read more
