I love Mayflower Seafood and have eaten at almost every site in Wake, Johnston and Wake counties. My experience at this one was just okay. This wasn't really the fault of our server, who was extremely nice to us, although our order did get botched. I was afraid that might happen when she didn't write it down. She was attentive and gave good recommendations (including that the flounder wasn't particularly good that night), so I give her points. She was the best part of our experience. My husband had the broiled shrimp and said it was very good. Our roommate had fried shrimp. I ordered fried oysters and fried catfish, but got fried catfish and fried shrimp instead. Our server apologized and brought me a small bowl with some oysters, and only charged me for the shrimp and catfish. The oysters were absolutely delicious - I just wish I'd gotten a full order of them. The shrimp were also excellent, if only I'd really wanted shrimp. My share of the french fries was a smaller portion than I get at other Mayflowers. My sweet tea wasn't good at all! It tasted more like tra sweetened with Stevia or Sweet N' Low than sugar. Sweet Tea in the south is not Diet Sweetener Tea. I hope this was just because we came in later in the evening. I admit to being picky about my tea! Restaurant itself was typical of the Mayflowers and clean. We'll go back and I hope that I get a full order of oysters that are as good as the sample I got this time. read more

Note to self: When you see a empty parking lot and no customers inside RUN! This was my first and last time going to Mayflower. The good news is our server was amazing and she should seek employment elsewhere. The interior looks nice and has a good aroma. It was 3 people with me and nobody was happy with their meal. The food looks good but nothing had seasoning. The flounder had scales on it. The shrimp was double breaded to make it look jumbo. The Ice Tea was nasty. The only good part of my meal was the French fries. The waitress did apologize and take one meal off the bill. Went here for my monthly seafood fix since I can't have crustaceans at home due to allergies. Walked in to a nice nautical themed dining area that wasn't too busy. Sat at the table and had to wait maybe 10 minutes for a waiter but that was excusable because, like every other restaurant, they were short staffed. Put in my order of the shrimp platter special. Included about 6 jumbo shrimp, a bowl of boiled shrimp and of course the popcorn shrimp. Waiter brought my order and after the first bite I knew the cook was not a seasoning person. The boiled shrimp were, well, boiled, the jumbo shrimp were breaded and fried as were the popcorn shrimp with not even a hint of seasoning at all. They were cooked ok just flavorless. I got a take out box and the shrimp I brought home are going to get seasoned to make them edible. The hush puppies had good flavor especially with the imitation butter spread and the cole slaw was creamy the way I like it. All in all a nice little jaunt for me that got me out of the house. I would recommend this restaurant with the advice that when you get your seafood, grab the salt and pepper. Staff is very friendly and the place is old but clean. read more

Tried Mayflower today for the first time. Order the Monday special - fried trout and popcorn shrimp. Shrimp was delicious but the trout was HORRIBLE!! I couldn't even force myself to eat it. Thankfully the shrimp completely made up for it along with the baked potato. Quick note for first timers wanting takeout... use side red door on the Sonic side. So my co-workers decided to go back to Mayflower the second night in a row. Surprisingly we had the SAME waitress! This time there were six of us at dinner and everyone except for one person ordered the crab platter. The salad was a whole lot better this time, no wilted lettuce and no old tomatoes. The crab legs were like a little piece of heaven in my mouth! Most of them were full before they even finished the crab legs. I would have posted pictures but I kinda ate them all!! LOL! The meat was perfect and came out very easily. The hushpuppies were excellent and still not a single one was burnt or mushy. The waitress actually was a lot better than the night before. She did not forget anything except my friend, Jones' salad but that was just because we confused her. It came with bacon bits and he did not eat bacon so he gave it to my friend and asked for another one. Shoot, even I was a little confused about it. Rule of thumb: The snow crab leg platter may be $16.99, but it is the best investment you could possibly make on seafood in this town! Plus it comes with a salad, hushpuppies, and a choice of a side. The fried platters are pretty good as well. This is definately a great place to eat although if you eat crab bring some hand sanitizer or wet wipes because they do not have any at the restaurant. This place needs to be shut down asap look at the picture I provided first thing and second the food has a fishy smell and taste I will never return. The hostess must be dating the son because she was touching his nasty nose then proceeded to clean the bottom of her shoe in the middle of the restaurant and didn't wash her hands. One of the most UNprofessional places I've been to and a very long time! I have order the same meal 3 times in a row and all 3 time my price have been differen! if you order a togo plate get ready to have an extra .50 added to your price for the takeout box your meal comes in... when ordering a family pack you will have an extra 2.00 added if you would like to have your fish salt and peppered! I'm done with this place and if I come in contact with someone that's thinking of going there I will definitely steer them in another direction!!! read more

Sad to say today I order a cat fish meal for my mom was not happy with. The fish tasted like it was cooked with old grease or oil. I had previously ordered from there and it was okay. I suggest you change your oil more frequently or your going to lose the few customers you have at this time during Covid. read more

I have been wanting to eat here for some amount of time & my husband & I finally ate there. It is located right next to Sonic. The parking lot was clean & had plenty of parking since it was not busy when we went. Walking into the restaurant I was surprised how clean it was & how large the inside was. They had a fish tank with fish inside that my toddler absolutely loved. Our waiter was awesome, he came to our table multiple times to make sure we were doing okay & if we needed anything. Not the best seafood I had but I will say that they give you great proportions for adult meals & even the kid meals. I was facing the hall way towards the bathroom & it look very nice, it had a nautical vibe to it. The only complaint, which is why I am giving 3 stars besides the food is the host for that night had a table next to us that had utensils he was setting up & he was on his phone the whole time..I felt like he could of put us in a different area or have his set up in a area not so close to customers since they weren't busy. read more

I'm not from the NC area but from the DC/MD where we are known for seafood restaurants. When I came to Goldsboro, my only request was seafood and then i'm cool. Well my brother granted my wish and took me to Mayflower. Mayflower was not where we were suppose to go but because it had gotten a little late we went to Mayflower. The food was delicious. After I reviewed the menu I was stunned at the prices....I truly thought I needed to put my glasses on. For the price for one person, lets just say that would be double in DC/MD. I had the pick any 3 fried platter, scallops, shrimp and fish, which came with baked potatoe, coleslaw, and hush puppies (I say they're onion rings)....When the waiter bought the food out, I was like is this all mine...this is alot of food. I was in heaven. The food was on point and delicious. My server was great as well. Very nice. We seem to get the same one all the time. Hope to see him this weekend when I come down. Every time I come to Goldsboro, it's almost a requirement that my brother takes me there to eat. I wish I could post a picture. I highly recommend Mayflower to all seafood lovers. Especially the fried food. Have yet to try broiled or the crab legs. If only we could get a Mayflower in DC/MD area. Only down side, they don't serve alcoholic beverages. read more

My last visit to Mayflower was five years ago. My hubby and I went there for lunch. I ordered the fried seafood plate and hubby ordered the baked plate. All of my food tasted the same. I paid 25.00 for a plate of scallops, flounder and shrimp that, I swear, tasted identical. We told the waitress and she said, "that's how it is supposed to taste.' We asked for a box and packed up the crap food and left. I gave the food to some of my family who seemed to love it. At times I wonder if I have defective taste buds. Food was great. I got the fried oysters, scallops, and flounder. Not too much batter on the seafood so I left perfectly full. Sweet potato great and the hush puppies that looked like onion rings were a great touch. Definitely would recommend Mayflower! read more

Came here and had the crab leg platter and it was well worth the price two people could easily share if you don't have a huge appetite

The food is Ok. When we did eat here we were able to substitute the garden salad for another side order. Today we decided to do takeout and we were told they could not substitute the salad, which is a waste because my husband does not eat "rabbit food". May eat here again but will never do takeout again. I know it's not Red Lobster or OutBack Steak House, however when you pay for food it should be eaten, not automatically tossed in the trash just because you can't substitute a garden Salad with French Fries. read more

Update: Management seems to have addressed the issues I previously posted. I've been back a couple of times, and the food was hot, well prepared, and had great flavor. My fiance and I oredered take out. I oreded broiled shrimp. The shrimp tasted really "fishy" and our sweet potatos was burnt from being overcooked. We were also suprised that the slaw came in such small containers. My meal was $12.99 My fiAnce ordered fried shrimp and fish. His meal was $14.99. He only recieved 5-6 jumbo shrimp and one piece of trout. We were very disappointed. My shrimp was terriable. We also only recieved three hushpuppies a piece, which was the best part of the meal. It sucks that we drove almost a hour to get there. My fiance also ordered the baked spagetti. He said it wasnt too bad, but I didnt like it at all. We were in town visiting family and wanted seafood. The place was clean. The food was okay. Service was okay. We ordered clam chowder which was really good. They brought the food before we hardly had a chance to start the soup. And, there was no need since there was hardly any customers I ordered grouper with fried okra. The okra was over cooked and not salted. The grouper didn't taste like grouper. The radio was so loud we couldn't talk. I will not be back. It wasn't worth the cost. I went once this week and will not be going back. The broiled fish is ok, but the jumbo shrimp is anything buy jumbo, the service was lacking, and the atmosphere is reminiscent of a hospital cafeteria. The service started out ok, but our server didn't refill my tea but once and I had to wait for 15 mins with an empty restaurant, therefore no excuse. They were generally inattentive and avoided talking entirely. The server tucked the bill under a basket full of butter without mentioning it, so we sat there for another 15 or so waiting for them to come back with a bill that it turned out we had all along. When we finally got their attention, without a word they pulled it out and tossed it down on the table and just stared at us blankly. It was quite rude. They walked by us once while we were waiting and my grandmother leaned to get her attention by saying excuse me and they passed us by, completely ignoring her. Not worth it to eat in, but if love your fried fish or shrimp (and I'm sure plenty of people in Goldsboro do) then take out is probably a good idea. If you're interested in a healthy seafood dish, I'd say no. Terrible side salads, too. read more

I would give this place 5 stars because I love their food. I used to eat at the one in Durham all the time. For some reason though, every single time we eat here and pay with our credit/debit card, we get charged 3 or 4 times. It was a real hassle. The only reason why we found out was because we tried to get a fast food meal for my fiance's mom directly afterward and the card was declined. We had been charged $37 a total of 4 times! We went to the restaurant to ask what had happened and the woman didn't know why it did that. She couldn't give us a refund. We had to call the bank and tell them what happened and wait 5-7 business days to get the money refunded back to us on the card. This happened 3 times. Now we only eat there if we're paying with cash. Other than that, the food is awesome and the portions are epic. read more

We used to really enjoy this place, however, the last two times we went the food was cold and my scallops weren't even cooked. The waitress took mine back and they came just the same. Last time I ate at this location, a couple of years ago, I was very pleased with the food. This time, however, it wasn't as tasty. I had a 3-seafood platter: fried shrimp, scallops and oysters and taste-wise, Sandpiper in Lagrange, NC is quite a bit better. In particular, the fried oysters weren't as tasty as they should have been being in season. Hushpuppies were excellent. Also, the restaurant was surprisingly slow in traffic on Easter Sunday right around noon - I was quite surprised to see that...if it was a restaurant in, say the Triangle, people would have been lined nearly out the door but we walked right in and immediately were seated. The service from the waiter was excellent but it's just unfortunate the seafood wasn't all it should have been - I guess this would explain the lack of customers. In summary, I really can't recommend this restaurant for great seafood when there are better choices in the area. read more

Sorry guys, had been hoping for better. Had been to Mayflower in Raleigh years ago and it was good. Best I can say about this is that it was fair. The staff were friendly and the food came in the right amount of time. We were 3 out if 5 families eating at an a slow time of day. Let me just say that my Husband and I have had quite a few laughs in the car on the way home trying to come up with names for the "scallops" that we were served. I'm not sure what kind of meat they were but most certainly not scallops. Husband says they were sclauggts = scallop/ chicken nuggets. We dissected quite a few and couldn't determine what meat it was. It was too rubbery/bouncy for fish. We are not the type to make a scene so we didn't bring it up. I've read quite a few posts about scallops sometimes being plugs from another source. In my 40+ years I have never experienced this type of scallop substitute. While the popcorn shrimp were definitely shrimp, the slaw and hush puppies had a good flavor, being frightened by the fake scallopy things makes me feel a little woozy from the meal. While we've had a good laugh, I'm just ready to put some hours between myself and this meal. A lot of food does not = a good meal. I heard sandpiper was good (havent eaten there) but we passed it and landed at Mayflower. Because the other items were in line with resturants of this type, we rated it 2 and not 1. If you like fried bouncy mystery meat this may be your place. read more

Ordered a Captain Smith combo and what I got was completely different from the menu and cost more. They also forgot my sides, so I ended up with some fried food and hushpuppies. Tried to call and complain to someone that couldn't speak English well. She said the online menu was old. I asked her about my sides 3 times but she could not understand me at all. I told her I was very upset about my meal and I would not be returning. She said, "ok," and hung up the phone on me. Hope the place goes under. read more

Patronized on 07/22/16 -The hostess/greeter gets a minus-1 star for attitude. If we were not hungry, I would have walked out. The food gets 1 star for presentation.. it came pretty fast, and looked edible. (Have you ever seen the fake food used for staging?) The catfish filet was an overly-breaded, flavorless glomp. The cole slaw was a cup of mayo with some bits of cabbage in it. The scallops, again, overly-breaded and flavorless. Thankfully, I didn't taste any frying oil. (I believe all the food was microwaved anyway.) The sweet tea was good. The server was okay. I won't be patronizing Mayflower Goldsboro again. This was their second chance with me. Fool me once, shame on you; fool me twice... I will take my $$ to McD's for filet-o-fish next time I don't want to cook seafood at home. The hostess/greeter/now/cashier gets another minus-1 star for attitude at checkout: not a "how was your meal"; not even a "thank-you" when handing me my change.
