I have been wanting to visit this market since I started working in Northside, and I am so glad I did! The woman that works here is so warm and inviting. She walked me through some of the items they have in store. There are fresh produce bakery, and pantry items sourced from local companies and farms. The deli offers sandwiches, and there are salads in the fridge. Some coffee/espresso offerings. Very cute and quaint, but definitely enough room to walk around inside and look at everything they have on their shelves to take home. I ordered the turkey sandwich and one of the garden salads. Everything was fresh and brilliant. Loved the apricot marmalade with the turkey! I will definitely come back here soon! read more

So first off, let may say that my Mediterranean Roast Beef sandwich was ELITE. The feta spread with the peppers with the roast beef was simply great. And that bread!!! Gracious its good! I am really excited to see what Mayfly will evolve into with more kitchen capacity as well as a better space. I have absolute confidence they will find their footing and can't wait to be a part of it. My initial reactions on what that evolution can look like? 1) Wider choices on some prepared foods. Other than the soups there really isn't anything to choose from. My guess is that the local community would reward you with some prepared main dishes or similar. The new kitchen should certainly be able to handle more output. Bridgeside in Sewickley does a few pizzas they put out by the slice and other stuff. It seems to work out well for them. 2) Maybe find a way to get a couple of tables and chairs out in the wide hallway (Strip district terminal has something like this). Maybe something out front? I wanted to eat there but there was no where to sit. Maybe that is already in the works. 3) I know they want to also be viewed as a grocery. Other than keeping some fruit or staples around I am not sure you can half way that from an items standpoint. All told, a great sandwich and what I am sure will be a staple for the entire North Side for years to come!! read more

We were on foot nearby when we were seeking out a snack and stumbled into Mayfly. I got huge neighborhood bodega vibes (filling an important niche for surrounding neighborhood) while still being upscale and stylish. If we lived nearby, I could see us popping in here regularly to get provisions, snacks, and other necessities to make dinner. We ended up just grabbing a bougie drink from the cooler and a cookie but were happy we stopped in. The inside has a beautiful ceiling (weird observation but it stood out), was neatly organized and they were even serving various ice creams by the scoop. I have worked in the area for almost 10 years now and I only just discovered Mayfly last week! It's a quaint market and deli tucked away but everyone needs to know about it. Each time I have ordered a sandwich and soup and both times each item was delicious. This time around the soup was so good I had to make a phone call to let them know!! Mayfly is my favorite place in the Northside! Their deli makes fresh, delicious, and unique sandwiches and soups - I've never tried one that wasn't great. I also love to shop in the market when I need to pick up a couple of things during the week. Mayfly sells products from a lot of great local businesses like Pane e Pronto and Leona's, and there's always something new to try. This market is the most perfect neighborhood market. Sometimes all you're craving is a good sandwich and some soup and THIS is my new go-to spot for just that. I have visited here 2x so far- once to pick up my brothmonger matzo ball soup (IYKYK) and the second was to check out their sandwiches. My fiance got their breakfast sandwich and really liked it. I ordered their turkey sandwich on ciabatta and it was HUGE and really tasty. Their macaroni salad was EPIC. I also got a miso onion butter soup to-go and it was amazing. They also have a great selection of local cheeses, eggs, meats, milk products, and produce. If you just need some basic grocery items, you can find them here! I even found some poblano pepper seeds that I am trying to sprout. You can't go wrong with this adorable neighborhood market! So thankful this is just an 8-minute drive from my house. read more

The pumpkin and salted caramel sorbet was soooo delicious that I would consider going here just for the sorbet. We also really enjoyed the fancy ginger cookies and other baked goods. We didn't order anything on the menu yet but I was impressed with how healthy they looked. The price was also very reasonable particularly for this area because it is located in a nicer and more walkable part of town. We moved to the Perrysville neighborhood last Summer and luckily discovered this gem of a market right away. I'm not a huge pizza/pierogies/put french fries on your everything kind of girl (SORRY PITTSBURGH!) so it is SO refreshing to be able to access tasty and elevated sandwiches, soups, pastries to for a treat + MY fave all sorts of easy to pick up fresh veggies and really well sourced meat options. Our next closest grocery store is a, how do I put this nicely, a really intense experience Giant Eagle store. The people that work there are so kind and accomodating. This place is super cute. I came in around 11:15AM for a quick lunch. This little shop is so cute and quaint. I was impressed with their offerings and how everything seemed very fresh. I ordered a prosciutto sandwich on wheat bread with rosemary and fig spread. It was definitely tasted good and I could see that it was wrapped with love by the lovely lady behind the counter. I'd appreciate if there was more seating. But I understand that this place is still relatively new. Everyone was very accommodating and helpful- I could tell that they care about the customer's needs because at the counter, there was a sign up sheet for suggestions on what the market should offer. I'd come here again to try the sorbet and maybe some soup. read more

Out for a little evening stroll and stopped into Mayfly. Such a fun little shop with just the essentials for cooking/baking as well as an ice cream counter. The woman working graciously let us try several flavors (which are unique and delicious), though in the end we decided to get a Leonas ice cream sandwich. We had known about Leonas for quite some time but never actually tried one. I was worried that the cookie would be difficult to bite into, given it's frozen, and the ice cream would shoot out the sides and be impossible to eat without a spoon, but this was not the case. The cookie was incredibly soft and chewy and the flavors of both the cookie and ice cream were divine. Now every time we are out on a walk (which is daily) we are tempted to pop in for another ice cream sandwich. We have to refrain, but we will most certainly be back. There are countless flavors we have yet to try and finally trying one was a step in a very dangerous direction. Oh and for you lactose intolerant people, they don't contain lactose! Mayfly is a great little market to have in the neighborhood. I only popped in to look around and try the sorbet, but I loved the mix of name-brand and Pittsburgh/local products. The sorbet was delicious! I sampled both the Bananas Foster and Blackberry. I opted for the Blackberry (as it was refreshing on the hot day that I stopped in), but am definitely planning on stopping back in for the Banana's foster in the very near future. I also look forward to trying their soups, salads, and sandwiches! Mayfly is about to become a staple in my life. read more

We have been visiting this neighborhood market for 4 years and whilst it is a lovely little place with healthy food options, it is the only market in our neighborhood and therefore should not be charging $10 for a head of iceberg lettuce, or $10 for a loaf of bread. This neighborhood is a complete food desert. The owner has used this to her advantage knowing that the folks in this neighborhood will pay whatever she charges because it is our only convenient option. However, I think it's quite disgusting. Mayfly market will no longer be getting my dollars. At least not until the owner stops price gauging and comes back down to earth. Also, if you're going to charge those sorts of prices for everyday items, perhaps you should consider paying your employees more than $12/hr. She gets rich whilst her employees and the rest of the neighborhood suffers. Blacklisted. Never again. read more

Frankly this place is expensive and disappointing. Many of the pantry items are premium prices with a higher markup from the previous market in this location. We have had several of their sandwiches, which are average at best but more often disappointing. My kielbasa was tepid despite consuming within 5 minutes of purchase. Their special prosciutto had a few miserly slices with a light schmere of goat cheese. Not worth the money. The sorbet is good and the larger size is a better value than the tiny cup. read more

I love being able to go in during the week and pick up a freshly made bagel already sliced, paired with the herb cream cheese in the fridge, a nice hot coffee, and an apple for snacking later. Instead of cancelling the order, someone stayed in the shop until I was able to pick up my order, and I was treated with such kindness it was unbelievable.
