Premium Tasting Flight: $25/tasting for 6 pours (as of 3/4/25) Another wonderful mid-week tasting of Mayo Family's delicious wines, including one of our all-time favorite white wines, a Chasselas Doré, which is poured under their winemaker's own label, Berthoud Vineyards & Winery. It's primarily a Swiss varietal, but a little is grown in Sonoma County making it unique to this area. This was our third visit and JV poured for us. He was delightful and knowledgeable about the wines here, and in the region, providing insight on other wineries that he thought we and our palates might enjoy. We especially enjoy Mayo's red wines, and as usual we left with bottles to add to our home cellar. They don't have food, but you're welcome to bring your own munchies/picnic. They're dog and family friendly, and they welcome walk-ins. TIP: They're open later than many wineries (6:30pm), which is a plus for us, as we can sneak in a late afternoon tasting before dinner. Love this chill winery in Sonoma County! Plus it's open later than other wineries too so it's the perfect last stop on your winery tour. Mayo was my favorite stop out of 3 wineries on a recent Sonoma wine outing. My party of 4 dropped by Sunday around 5:30 and there were still a couple groups doing tastings. You can either choose to do the tasting standing in the tasting room, or they have a patio in the back with picnic tables where you can do the tasting. We got our first two pours at the bar and then moved to the patio when we realized that was an option. We came right after Valentine's Day, so they had special Valentine's Weekend tasting for $35 a person, which included 8 wines. We had drank a fair amount already at this point, so we split 2 tastings. I personally prefer sweeter white wines over red, so my favorites were the sparkling brut rose and the riesling. We all agreed that the wines here were solid, both the reds and the whites. And it was interesting that they end the tasting with some port! I really liked the vibes here. As it got dark, they turned on the lights and the patio looked beautiful. It was so nice to be able to leisurely do our tastings in a nice ambiance and chat without feeling rushed. read more

Look no further than Mayo Family winery for wines that taste passionate (if that's possible), but homey and delicious all at the same time. They have an incredible $25 for 6 pour tasting flight, and an incredible port as a bonus. We enjoyed sitting in their back patio area, which is no frills, but quiet and not stuffy like other Napa/Sonoma wineries we'd previously visited. The ladies working the tasting room were incredibly knowledgeable and happy to share the ins and outs of the area, in addition to wine expertise. If you crave a fine boutique wine, you will find it here at Mayo Family Winery. I love my wines on the bold and beautiful side and although I was expecting to find nothing other than that at a Sonoma winery, their Pinot, Zinfandel and Cabernet left my palate screaming for more. Although I can't speak to the aging potential of the wines, I can attest to their structure and appearance. They definitely had a well-defined structure that lends them my kind of depth, and unlike most young red's showcase a deeper garnet or brick-red color. A happy wine makes for a great wine, and I believe a happy wine can only be found at an architecturally pleasing winery. One that presents itself as a harmonious blend of natural beauty, architectural elegance, and attention to detail. One that comes with a lovely main building, such as a château, or modern architectural showpiece, that serves as the focal point where the wine can be showcased and enjoyed. Mayo Family Winery was our second stop on a three-stop wine tour with Platypus Wine Tours. She was really cool, friendly, and funny. She got along well with our group of six approaching-middle-age dudes (guys trip). Courtney is the Director of Sales and Marketing at Mayo. Courtney greeted us at the winery's private entrance, the one with the big wooden doors. There was a bar right inside where she conducted our tasting, to start. Here's what we tried: * 2014 Sparkling Blanc de Blanc, Laurel Hill Vineyard ($45) * 2018 Chardonnay, Laurel Hill Vineyard, "Unwooded" ($30) * 2019 Zinfandel, Russian River Valley, The Barnstormer ($40) - Double Gold Medal Winner at the Sonoma County Harvest Fair * 2018 Cabernet Sauvignon, Thomas Vineyard, "Annika's Cuvee" ($50) * 2017 Zinfandel Port, Ricci Vineyard "Old Vines" ($40) - Gold Medal Winner at the Sonoma County Harvest Fair I like wine, but I'm far from a wine connoisseur. I thought all of Mayo's wines tasted good. No single wine stood out to me other than the one we started with, the Blanc de Blanc, only because it was sparkling. Courtney did a wonderful job explaining the Mayo Family Winery history to us and walking us through each wine, one by one, with individual background and tasting notes. During our visit, Courtney also showed us some of the winery's machinery, took us into the barrel room, and showed us to lunch on Mayo's beautiful, covered, outdoor patio. Lunch was provided by Platypus. We continued to taste wines throughout the visit, concluding with a port on the patio. Courtney's very cute dog joined us outside. The picturesque patio has string lighting, trees, and a neat fountain made out of barrels. I interacted with another Mayo employee inside. I forgot his name, but I remember Courtney saying something like he said he's like Silvio (or Paulie?) from The Sopranos. Anyway, he was nice too. They seem to have a terrific crew here. We arrived on an ordinary Friday around 12:45pm and left shortly after 2:15pm, so we were at Mayo for about 1.5 hours or so. There was only one other group - a couple - when we visited. A bigger group came in a trolley just after us. Our tasting was at Mayo's main location in Glen Ellen. They also have "The Reserve Room" in Kenwood, less than a 10-minute drive north on Sonoma Highway. Unlike other wineries/cellars, I didn't see any vineyards on-site at Mayo in Glen Ellen. They do have estate vineyards in the area, on Sonoma Mountain and in the Russian River Valley. This is a small, family winery which I was happy to support. It's definitely unlike the bigger, more touristy, and commercialized wineries, like some of the ones I've been to in Napa Valley. Not that the bigger ones are "bad," but Mayo has more of that independent, local, "mom and pop" feel. The cost for the tasting at Mayo was $20 per person. read more

We came here on a wine tour we booked through viator. This was the first winery we visited, and it was my absolute favorite. Heather helped us out, and we tried 6 or 7 wines (the first 3 were included in the tour, and we tried the additional ones for a $10 upcharge. totally worth it!!) She was great. Very knowledgeable, friendly, and just all in all a wonderful guide. These were the best wines we tried all day. We ended up buying 6 bottles to take home. 2 for me, a Sauvignon Blanc and a port (the port is AMAZING), 2 for my mom (a chardonnay and a port) and 2 for my sister (2 chardonnays). The bottles are reasonably priced, and they also offer a wine club! I'm definitely interested in that. It looks like they have food options and wine pairings, so the next time we come to the area, I'd definitely like to try some of those offerings. Can't recommend this place enough!! read more

Our second stop on our wine tour brought us to the very small family winery, Mayo. We were greeted by such a friendly employee who brought us through these huge beautiful doors into their tasting room. We stood around a bar in a warehouse while she explained the history of Mayo and their process of creating their wine. From there, we moved into their barrel room before moving outside to a gorgeous courtyard to enjoy our lunch. The lunch was provided by our wine tour, not from Mayo. The courtyard was such a cool space to relax and enjoy their wine. We ended up buying a few bottles to bring home and I can't wait to enjoy them again. We have been to the Mayo family tasting room on several occasions, as a member of Harvest Hosts. Honestly, this is the most welcoming, happy tasting room we've ever visited. The staff is so friendly. Out of a day trip tour with several wine stops, the wines here were BY FAR the best, even over other, 'fancier' labels. Our Mayo guide (can't remember her name, sorry!) was knowledgable and gave a very thorough tour. We chose to upgrade our tasting from 3 wines to 6 and got an amazing price (as it may have been an exclusive deal for the tour, I won't post it here). Chardonnay - I'm not a fan of Chardonnay but found it drinkable and refreshing. I wouldn't necessarily buy for myself but I did like it. Sauv Blanc - same for this one, took a wine I don't normally like and made it drinkable. Dessert Zinfandel - Now I'm just sounding picky, but I don't typically like dessert wines either, and really enjoyed this special brandy blend. It wasn't too sweet and at 18% ABV, you get plenty of bang for your buck. Libertine - Favorite of the day. Excellent flavor and mouth feel. 2019 Alicante Bouchet - a bit heavy for me, but very flavorful. Missing one, I believe it was a cab sauv or red blend and immensely enjoyed that as well. Lit or mid? This was the final stop on our Napa and Sonoma wine tour and I enjoyed it immensely! We were greeted with a glass and our tour started. She gave us a brief history of the winery, how the wine is made and led us into a barrel room where we got our second tasting. She said the final tasting would be a port, so if we were interested in adding the upgraded tasting she recommended doing that before having the port. We opted in and I enjoyed the three additional wines we had. The port we finished with was nice and light instead of a typical thick and syrupy port. This was just what we needed while passing through and needing a driving break in the heat of the day. I sampled wine while my partner (the driver) relaxed with the dogs in the shade. They have a concrete patio which was very cool to the touch in 100+ degree weather so the dogs were happy. Good wine, I really liked the Zinfandel and the port. I didn't catch the name of the guy helping us out on our Easter weekend wine tasting, but I like to think he warmed to us by the end of the session. I asked my bf what he did to piss him off in the beginning because it seemed like he was waiting for the next group to come in and get away from us LOL. This is a very humble tasting room compared to what you're going to see in other parts of Napa/Sonoma. This room isn't attached to a vineyard, rather it sits on the corner of where Arnold Dr. meets Hwy 12 leaving Glen Ellen. We stopped by at the recommendation of our hotel, and I'm glad we made the stop. This isn't what I would call "everyman wine" - it's rooted in terroir, and they think a lot about how a blend effects the wine as it opens up and changes throughout a meal. Some of these wines will punch you in the face in a good way. We left with a bottle of the Zinfandel Port (love) and the 2014 Carignane, which I was eventually convinced would pair well with salmon or roast chicken (I bought it to see for myself). Their winemaker also runs his own label; we tried a couple and they were both transcendent, especially at the price. I'd make this an early stop in your day, maybe even your first. These are flavors that are nuanced that you're going to want to pick up on. Minus a star for scenery and the weird initial vibe; I'd 100% come back though. Til next time, cheers! read more

I recently visited with a group of 25 for a work event. As I was leaving I told myself "this is one of my new favorite wineries!" It's a small family owned operation which makes it unique and all that much better. They have a cute outdoor patio and a beautiful indoor event space. The wine was amazing and their champagne (only bottled once every 3 years) was crisp and delightful. The level of service was bar far some of the best from any winery I've been to in Sonoma and the tasting fee was more than reasonable. I had a wonderful time at Mayo Family Winery last month and can't wait to return! Liz was so kind, sweet and easy to talk to. It was so nice to chat with someone you just met in these uneasy times. The winery is small and family-owned. There's a picnic area outback where tasting is held. You can walk-in but I highly recommend to reserve a table. Don't let the small winery fool you, the wines had big flavor- I was very impressed! My favorite was their zin. These wines aren't sold in stores from what I recall so make sure to buy a bottle or two. Mayo Family Winery welcomes you like their own. This is the perfect winery to stop at if you want good wine and to relax.... without the Sonoma/Napa "ritzy" vibes if you know what I mean. read more

It's sad however I do not remember the name of the lady who was our guide for the day but she really seemed to love her job. She said she came in one day to pick up her selections from the 'Wine Club'. Aside from the delicious wine we were able to taste we were honored with the presence of baby 'Cia' (Cecilia), this kid is a charmer with a great smile. The family dog is the first in my experience to have a great balance of aloofness and acknowledgement of the guest. I was not offended or annoyed by 'him/her' in the least bit. This was the best experience of the three wineries we visited on this trip. We were given the history of the winery, its impact or collaboration with other wineries in the area, a view and explanation of the equipment used to make the great Mayo Family Wine creations. Oh of course we were able to taste 5+ wines. None of the wines had that harsh or dry 'cheap' wine taste, each wine was inviting. There was one wine described by another guest as having the flavor of 'elder-flower', I thought the same thing (Gewuztraminer) this along with my final choice of the port(it's made with two types of wine) were divine.
