This is an amazing place. I am from Brooklyn NY and of Italian Heritage. Mazzas in Mt Vernon Ohio is so similar to New York style Italian Restaurants you will not believe you are in Ohio. Stopped going to Mazza's awhile back because we didn't like their red sauce and they served canned parmesan. Recent have returned and found their red sauce pretty good BUT they still serve canned parmesan. WHY? The server should offer freshly grated parmesan tableside at any decent Italian restaurant. This is a bit tricky to review. Our family of five went on a weekday dinner. It was pretty empty and by the time we left it was maybe half full. Older crowd. Interior was pretty fancy, candles on the tables with water decanters and paper on the tables. The table came with complimentary bread and little packets of butter. I'm not a fan as that's unnecessary waste and the butter was difficult to spread as it was hard. Metal cups are better. The five cheese bread appetizer was good, the marinara dip came hot in a metal cup. There were only four slices of bread so we had to cut a piece in half. Our meals were marsala, wild mushroom ravioli, lasagna, and little Italy. The ravioli was disappointing as it tasted good, but each plate only had four and five pieces of ravioli so we left hungry. The lasagna was good. Marsala was also good though he felt like there was a bit too much sauce (possibly balsamic bourbon?). The manicotti had an odd lemony taste. The Alfredo was a bit dry. Despite that we did think everything tasted good overall. The meals do not come with salad, that costs extra. Since we were hungry we went home and had bowls of salad at home. It actually tasted good overall, I just don't feel the pricey was the best for the portions. Since I had ravioli I'm rating based on my own experience more than my family since they may have done 4 stars instead. I'm just not thrilled going home hungry after paying like $18 for 5 pieces of ravioli. I'm not a big eater so I can't even remember the last time I left a place hungry. Also there are at least a couple vegetarian options, but be aware there's nothing vegan on the menu. read more

OMG the worst Pizza I've ever eaten! I've eaten at the restaurant and it was decent and decided to try the pizza. What a mistake, see photo of a large pepperoni. Here is what's wrong - besides the obvious: Almost no sauce - see photo of cheese removed. Cheese rubbery - overcooked microwave kind. Inedible. Crust - almost unbelievable that a restaurant with good rolls would serve this. So thin that it's burnt and would crack your teeth, and no flavor. See backside of crust photo. Flavor- most any kind of crappy pizza I've had has more flavor. Oily - see photo. But I think the oil is probably its best feature. Size- well, it's a large for $15. Looks pretty awkward and tastes worse. We opened the box and dialed another pizza house in town. That's how bad it was. P.S. we picked up our pizza straight away so it didn't sit around. Atmosphere is good, with a large dining area. It was a Monday, so it was very crowded and reservations were needed, but it was not terribly loud as you might expect. The menu was large and had a lot of offerings. I went with the lasagna, and the famous side salad, both of which were really good. I was pleased with the server, who was very friendly and accommodating. The prices, being a special on Monday were surprisingly inexpensive. I would definitely go back, if in the area. read more

in all honesty, this is probably the worst Italian place. I've ever eaten at in my life by far worse than the Olive Garden and the Olive Garden is literally the McDonald's of Italian food. The calamari was extremely overcooked. The two pieces of tiramisu were very outdated and tasted extremely stale. You could tell that they had been sitting in the cooler for quite some time. The dish that my husband ordered which contained bacon was all bacon fat, not actual pork meat bacon, the Alfredo sauce is definitely not homemade. The mozzarella was undercooked... Even my 10-year-old said that his burger was awful and he is very easy to please. After spending $110 on this food I did Call and Voice my opinion and was told that I would be refunded and here it is a week and a half later and I have yet to be refunded. Mazza's is an institution, in my mind, having grown up with the original Mazza's. I still love it and would definitely recommend the restaurant for good Italian food. If you're not opposed to garlic, definitely get the Mazza's salad. I think it's just as good as it used to be, although my mom disagreed with me today. We made a reservation for noon through Open Table and met at the restaurant. We were quickly guided to our booth and provided with water and bread. The bread is ok, it comes with little packets of Land O'Lakes whipped butter, which was cold and not spreadable on the not warm bread. Service at Mazza's is good, it's not extremely fast, but it's more of an experience to take your time and enjoy the company of the people with whom you're dining. I ordered the entree Mazza's salad and a half order of fettuccine alfredo. Both were excellent. Mazza's salad includes chopped iceberg lettuce, massive quantities of garlic, cheese (gorgonzola maybe?) and maybe salt. It's not for everyone, but I love it! The fettuccine alfredo was creamy, garlicy deliciousness. I have half a salad remaining for lunch tomorrow. My husband ordered the manicotti. It came with two tubes stuffed with a delicious ricotta mixture. It was topped with a nice generous amount of red sauce and cheese. He enjoyed it! My mom ordered a half entree of the shrimp scampi and an entree Mazza's salad. She felt the scampi lacked flavor, unfortunately. The server accidentally entered the order as a full entree, but charged only for the half potion ordered. The entree comes with 5 large shrimp. No complaints about cleanliness, music, or noise. Mazza's was much better than we anticipated. We ordered the Chicken Milanese and the Pasta Amatriciana with Chicken, and they were both very good. Our friends got the the Chicken Marsala and the Chicken Parmesan. A Mazza's salad was also ordered. The service was uneven, for example the waitress brought us our food but had no idea who had ordered what so we had to figure out what the entrees were and who they belonged too. She also told us she didn't like the salad even though she works there. The food was hot and the proportions are generous. The prices were what you'd expect. Some things to improve on would be the bread. Sort of lukewarm and blah. The chicken on the Amatriciana was more of an afterthought than anything else. I struggle giving this place a 3. Went with my wife and daughter. We got a pizza for an appetizer, it was good. All got a pasta dish, mine was terrible, daughter liked her's and the wife's looked like a soup but she said she liked it. A tall draft was almost 10 bucks! That's ridiculous. Wife's wine was 10, but that is to be expected even though it's overpriced to begin with. I just don't think the place was worth the money. Another great experience at Mazzas! We requested a quiet booth with our reservation and were given the option of the dining room or bar. We preferred the bar and we're quickly seated in a quiet corner which we appreciated. Our server Desiree was excellent! Friendly, courteous and thorough. We ordered a small Mazza salad along with the Wild Mushroom Ravioli and Linguini with additional shrimp. Everything was cooked perfectly and delicious! The perfect crispy crunch on the outside, while the inside is soft and full of flavor pockets. Can easily become a guilty pleasure. What isn't a guilty pleasure is the calamari. This Italian restaurant beats everything else we know in Columbus. The Famous Mazza salad is very garlic/vinegar heavy so prepare your tastebuds (but oooh so delicious). There's a reason this restaurant has been around since the beginning of time and that's because it knocks it out of the park. We had the mussels and zucchini fries to start and they both were delicious, but the mussels left us speechless. Perfectly cooked, excellent flavor. I had a pasta special that I can't remember the name that was so good I have dreams about it. My boyfriend had chicken Alfredo and he ate it all before I could blink. We had cheesecake for dessert that was out of this world. Our service was also excellent. The craziest part of all is that we both had multiple drinks, 2 appetizers, an entree each, I got a side salad, AND we got dessert and our meal was barely over $100. Thank goodness this Mount Vernon iconic restaurant did not disappear from the landscape but just relocated to the other side of town. The spirit of Mike Mazza lives on at the Upper Gilchrist location and many of the same familiar dishes are there to entice you and yes, that includes the wonderful Mazza's Famous Salad. It is hard to go wrong with any of these tried and true traditions on the menu. I prefer sometimes to just order carry out (one of the family-sized dinners that are a good value), pick it up in a previous restaurant's "car hop" area,, and take it home for a delicious set of dinners for myself or invite some friends over for a party.
