These folks totally messed up a perishable shipment of vaccines for me this week. They told me to meet a certain plane to pick up the shipment, then neglected to track the package and notice that the shipment wasn't on that plane. Nor had they given me a link to track the package myself. As a result I drove for 90 minutes to SFO and then waited around for another 90 minutes as the cargo people tried to figure out what had happened (they were utterly confused). Even worse, I was splitting the shipment with other veterinarians, one of whom drove for 2 1/2 hours (!) from east of Sacramento to pick up the nonexistent shipment. Meanwhile, a friend who had a vaccine shipment scheduled to come in on the same plane was told by her (different) customs broker about the delay long before she would have left for the airport. I did eventually get the package two days later, after another fun afternoon of driving to and from the airport. I had used Katie and John in the past without incident, but now I realize I got lucky the first time. As soon as there was a complication they failed. read more

I would not recommend this company for several reasons: -The did not communicate the pricing clearly, they told me their fee and the customs/tax but once the goods arrived the bill was much higher and they had marked up the pallets and added other charges that were not agreed upon in the beginning. -My good were held up from being release because they overnight ed the check instead of sending a wire transfer to the logistics company which ended up costing me more money in storage fees. -They charged me for coordinating the pick up of the good and I ended up doing most of the work -Communication was poor, when asked about overcharges it took them 2 days to respond Lastly their attention to detail was very poor on the shipping releases the shipping company and destination were wrong and i had to request corrections on the documents. read more

We recently shipped a large air freight shipment from Europe to Los Angeles via a well known freight forwarder. We let them broker the shipment, which was a big mistake. Even though the forwarder's brokerage team got the paperwork before the shipment left and it was crystal clear this was a shipment for a company, their brokerage was clueless, insisted on unnecessary paperwork, and sat on the shipment for nearly two weeks. The shipment was close to being put in a GO warehouse which would have cost us a lot of money (and which would have made the forwarder a lot of money!). The weekend before this was going to happen I found MBC brokers on Yelp, called them and left a message. John responded right away, called me up and instantly understood the situation and told me he would be able to get the paperwork done in an hour. I was blown away by John's professionalism and attention to detail and fired our forwarder's broker team and hired John right away. That same weekend John simplified the paperwork for us and filed it with customs and got the shipment immediately cleared. He patiently worked with us through getting the shipment out of the hands of our forwarder on Monday after the weekend, and got it delivered to our door. the only thing i know about getting stuff through customs is, it's a pain in the ass! had a large crate incoming via slow ship from australia - had various furniture, artwork, antiques, what not, with a 4 week estimated arrival time. let me tell you, it really is complicated. it is not nearly as simple as UPS or FedEx providing tracking updates and delivering an oversized box to your door step with home or ground delivery. nope. if it has to go through customs and if it is big, with lots of different items... it's complicated. if you can believe it, there were "department of homeland security" forms where we had to describe not only the incoming items but if i.e. it was made of wood, you had to list the genus of the wood. the what?! i didn't even know what that was. thank you google -- it means like, species origin. not only that, but whoa then there's also this other form, that other form, ISF this and that, you have to prove your taxpayer number because california will later tax you out the wazoo with use tax. and more! then besides these forms, you also have to arrange pickup and transport of your shipment / crate, and once again, it's not as simple as you drive up to the ship unloading area and you throw it in your truck or tie it to your roof! so ugh. all these details and procedures and forms. all this government stuff, in the name of taxes and "security". i get it, i get it. and i'm also getting a headache from it! anyway... that's where mbc brokers comes in! because everything you don't know about dealing with the details, intricacies, forms and headaches of a shipment... they do! i was actually told upfront by the australian shipping company that i would need to get a customs broker to guide it through the system on this end. customs broker check up on yelp... here i come! contacted MBC by email, and was promptly answer in a few hours back by katie. more and more emails back b/c lots of initial details to pin down -- bill of lading number, ship, origin yada yada yada! i'll be honest, it is a laborious and time-consuming process -- just like going to the dmv and filing income taxes are! and it's an expensive process too. that's the way the guhvuhment works i guess! i can't say it's pleasant, because lets face it -- it's not. but i'm glad that MBC and katie knew exactly what was going on and what to do. and what i can tell you is, they got my crate delivered to my door (which took a mini unloader off a flatbed truck...) and that's exactly what i hoped they would do! 'cause i sure as hell didn't know how to do it...! suffice it so say if you're confused about customs... in utter confusion about imports... After living in Europe for 3.5 years, we had a personal shipment of 170 bottles of wine incoming from Italy to LAX. We were told by several people that a customs broker was not necessarily required until a customs agent told us we would indeed have to hire a broker. We were scrambling to find someone at 4 pm on a Friday and were questioning whether we'd ever see our wine. I am not the kind of person to write reviews about much of anything unless I am extremely impressed by something I experienced with the company or their product. My experience with this company left me asking if there was a place I could write a review or someone I could share our experience with. I was sent here to Yelp. So, my family and I live in Nicaragua. We drove down in a Toyota Sienna AWD from Northern California. We found that we needed a 4x4 pick-up for what Yeshua (Jesus) sent us here to do (and something better built for this terrain and for which we could obtain parts without having to import them). There being really no market for our Sienna and ridiculous import taxes, we decided to try to ship the Sienna back to the US and sell it there. After a nightmare experience with the shipping broker on the Nicaragua side, it finally shipped 2 months after we dropped it off. The Nicaraguan company also failed to file an import document that told the Port of LA what was in the container. As a result, we had to pay all kinds of fees and get x-rays and exams, and we had to find a broker to help us get the Sienna released. My wife found 3 options, and after praying about them, we sensed we should go with John Hanson at MBC Brokers. He wasted no time and took great care of us. Though he had to work with a friend in the Anaheim area who was in California functioning on our behalf, John's communication was exceptional, he was very professional, he did a great job, and he got it done very quickly considering our situation. Even after all that he did, because of some weird bureaucracy, the man who ended up buying our car had an issue with the CA DMV that required some special form from The Port Authority and Customs. John and Katie Hanson went the extra mile to get the appropriate information from my friend in Anaheim and from me, even making personal trips down to the port and meeting up with the new owner of the Sienna to make sure he got the paperwork that he needed. Again, the communication was exceptional, they wasted no time, did a very thorough job, and got it done. Our biggest disappointment with the whole transaction was with the Nicaraguan shipping broker--how unprofessional, inefficient, and negligent they were. On the other side of this whole ordeal, it became obvious how severely lacking in knowledge the company from Nicaragua was regarding how to properly ship a vehicle to the US and how things run in the US port with which they would be dealing. Their communication was also horrible. (Should have taken more time to pray into this one!) On the other hand, it became ridiculously obvious from the very start that John and Katie really know their stuff or will do whatever is necessary to find out whatever is needed to get the job done with the highest level of professionalism and expertise. In addition, they made us feel like we were working with a close FRIEND of a family member, and when it was all said and done, 6-7 months after closing our case, they went the extra mile for the new owner of the Sienna and us so that Sienna could be properly registered in California. Class act, professional, humble, and like a neighbor or friend... I recommend John and Katie with highest regards and wouldn't even consider trying another broker should we ever need their services again. And if their service to us is at all a reflection of the overall quality of this company as a whole, you will not be sorry for choosing them. read more
