This multi-use park is quite large and covers quite a bit of ground. There's plenty of sites here for picnics, soccer, baseball, and hiking/walking/cycling. Overall the park is clean and the trails are quite wide that connect with one another. Be careful if you go off the pavement and onto unpaved trails as they could be rife with bugs/mosquitoes. I got off path on one trail and the bugs swarmed me and got me good on my neck and shoulders. Bugspray is definitely a must use and make sure you have proper foot attire. Very scenic, you'll get your nature fix at this one. read more

Visited this park to eat my lunch in my vehicle and after walked about a mile down the trail/road. Paved and very easy to follow trails. A lot of birds and insect life. Nice restroom facilities and water fountains near parking area where trails start. They also had a tire pump, bike tools and a stand to mount your bike if is you need to work on it. They also allow mountain biking so I would like to come back with my bike and explore more of the trail system. read more

Working in the area, this was my go-to place for jogging. There are lots of fiffer trails of varying length. I tried jogging the Blue Loop twice...in opposite direction. Both times I ended up off trail as the trail markings can be difficult to follow. The blue loop and all the other loops are a trail runs and definitely rough on the ankle. Jogging the paved road was easy to follow. Jogging within the park usually provided some shade from the sun because you're usually under the forest canopy. I also jogged southeast on the paved walkway that goes under the road. You're more exposed so you can take advantage of any breeze. Most people I encountered were riding the trails on mountain bikes. Loads of deer everywhere in the park. I saw numerous people hand feeding them. Most will allow you to jog quite close to them. There's also a bike park section, soccer field, and some baseball diamonds. Nice find near my hotel. read more

The 16th Annual Fest of Tails was held Saturday, March 11th from 10 AM - 4 PM, included was a free kite festival and dog fair. I absolutely love McAllister park! My husband found this gem for me/us to run at. We come here very often to run! It is a very very big park. The first time we came here we drove around and saw that there are so many trails within the park. Be prepared to see many deer frolicking around! It's a beautiful sight! Most trails are paved but some are not. There is a dog park/section as well. Mostly port a potties fyi. I haven't seen actual brick and mortar bathroom. First time here and I have to say I was skeptical but this park is very clean and maintain. There was a few dog poop bags on the side but only saw a handful of them. The trails are paved with some side dirt paths if you want to explore. On my walk I saw signs helping you guide, restroom area, plenty of parking. The nature of the trails makes you feel you are somewhere else instead of the middle of the city. read more

There's an outstanding dog park within McAllister Park; if I were rating the dog park alone, I'd give it five stars, but when I consider all the facilities and activities available within McAllister Park, I'm more comfortable giving it a four star rating. Tip: If you're a dog owner, then make a point of visiting the dog park here - it's really spacious and nice. It boasts lots of shaded areas and benches for the owners to sit while their four-footed friends play in the park. There's even play equipment here for your dog! Even if you're not a dog owner, there are a number of things that might entice you to visit this park. It's got a number of biking and walking trails honeycombing all throughout the park. On the down side, the terrain is mostly flat and the scenery is more than a bit monotonous, but it's still a great place to enjoy some time with Mother Nature :-) read more

I've been going to McAllister Park since 2014. There are lots of running and biking trails, as well as playgrounds for kids. It has been a great place to go running and it's dog friendly. Somewhere, there's a dog park, but I haven't been there. If you're lucky, you'll see some wildlife. I've only ever seen deer. I'm told there are also armadillos if you go early enough. There are many different colored trails of varying lengths but sometimes it's hard to follow, even with signs. Finally, after many miles of running here, I THINK I finally ran the whole blue trail without getting lost. read more

Since it's been awhile, I thought I would update this review. Everything in my original review stands, although I'm less antagonistic towards crazy mountain bikers. I've started to just run clockwise so I can see them coming. That seems to help although it's a faux pas, at least on tracks. The reason I wanted to update the review is I finally took a new route, the Mud Creek Loop that peels off from the blue trail over by the trailhead with the playground. It's great! Solid single track that's well-maintained, although it can be a bit confusing, but it's a loop so you can't get that lost. I did it on a whim today and it added about 2 miles to my usual run. So if you do the blue trail which is like 6.5 or something, one loop around the park is almost 10 miles. Since the blue goes around the exterior of the park, just throw in a little jaunt on the red trail or another interior trail to get you to 10. This is amazing! Especially for distance runners looking to get their long runs in. Instead of 4+ laps, you can just do like 2-3 & GTFO. PERFECT. I hate loop repeats. Normally I just park near the dog park. I use that as my base & just refill my water, eat some quick cliff bars, take a shot of Monster & I'm off. It's super convenient because the trail runs right by that parking lot (not the dog park lot but the other one down the road from it). PLUS, this park is open from 5am to 11pm. Running with a head lamp on at night is super fun, so long as you're familiar with the trails (although the markers have reflective tape on them so you can pretty much figure it out). Obviously, your miles may vary, especially in terms of safety so run with friends. But long runs sans the Texas summer sun are doable because of the late hours. I saw a mountain lion (like no joke) once but it was smaller & didn't bother me & I didn't bother it but so far no snakes in the 10 yrs I've been coming here. The track is mostly single track of hard-packed dirt, some roots & rocks, but not too bad for the most part. It's relatively flat which kind of sucks, so you'll have to go to Friedrich or Hill Country Natural Area if you need vert. Bring lots of water. It's super easy to navigate the outer trails, try em out! read more

This is one of my favorite parks when it comes to seeing wildlife. I often come across deer and lizards that will linger to see if you might have a treat. There is nothing more peaceful than doing morning stretches and a deer walking right up to you as if to say "hello." They are so use to people here, you are very likely to have a close encounter with these magnificent beasts. They have many different paved and unpaved trails of varying difficulty. I'm so excited have moved over by McAllister Park. Since I've lived in San Antonio, this has been a go to park for hiking bike rides or just enjoying some fresh air. It's surprising how big the park is given its location. It feels like a hidden natural or oasis in the middle of the city. Having the police department right next-door keeps a good feeling of security and having the driving range and hops and hounds nearby give some options for other activities. McAllister Park has the best dog park in San Antonio. I took my dog Franki to play one afternoon, and he had a blast! It's a huge space with many playful dogs, and an agility course! The dog owners that come to McAllister Dog Park are responsible, pick up after their dogs, and generally work together to keep the park very clean. As typical with Texas, are more big dogs than small, but nevertheless friendly. Franki made some new friends that day. I would definitely bring him back despite being a bit of a drive from the south side. read more

Check out the BMX biking track! This place is pretty awesome! They've recently built a paved ramp/course for bikes that goes in a tight loop, with ramps, jumps, curves, and bowls where you can get your speed on, your tricks going, or just fly. When I went, there were kids aged from about 3 to 43 checking out the course on the bikes. Bikers were courteous and fast. When a kid wiped out, everyone slowed down and stopped to make sure he was okay. If you're not into the tricks course, there's also a bicycling obstacle course with a slalom, raised pathways, a tube to go shooting through, and other fun stuff. Other paths are present in the park- it's a big big park. It's right up against the San Antonio International Airport, so the planes buzz this park on landing approaches. This park is part of a chain of linear parks, so the big paved path that goes through the park is not a loop, but a thoroughfare. There's large open fields here if you want to get a football or baseball game going. In fact, there's even baseball diamonds available for reservation. When we went, there were lots of people enjoying a game. There's also a dog park component that has its own Yelp page here. Parking is ample through this park. There's so much park here, it seems that it'd be hard to take it all in on one day. read more

It had been too long since I've rode my mt. bike and I'm really happy McAllister Park is local and offers a trail for mt. biking! I must have picked a great day because I saw several mt. bikers out the day I went (Friday, observed Veterans Day). Their are a lot of ways to start the different trails so that made me wish they had more guides on the trail or at least something to see when you first get on the trail. I was going down one trail and looped around to another trail and about 15 minutes later I saw a blue trail marker. I looked at another site and they wrote the blue trail is about 6.7 miles and it's a moderate skill level. It seems to go along the outside of the park. I must've only caught half of the trail so to get more miles I rode off on what I thought was still the blue trail but turned out to be red! I think I saw 3 different color markers and I honestly couldn't tell you much about them. Everything I rode on seemed pretty moderate. I recommend being careful as this park can get crowded and you don't to not be paying attention and crash. Overall, I'm grateful for this FREE park in the city because it allows me to enjoy my mt. bike at a whim and not have to plan so much travel time. read more

Such a pleasant place to spend a few hours. Lots of trails, trees (shade), and wildlife. I was surprised to happen upon a lake a few years ago. It would be easy to forget you're in a big city, but the planes from the airport are a reminder. I've seen lots of lizards, one snake, and many deer. Once I heard hooves and stopped in my tracks. A huge buck ran right in front of me. I waited to see if maybe another buck was chasing him, but none showed. Maybe he was just out for a jog. The only negative in my many visits was a very foul smell one morning. On the news that evening, I learned a dead body was discovered in that area. I've always felt safe there, but I do stick to the outer, more populated trails when I'm alone. So, go, use common sense, trust your "Spidey" sense, and enjoy nature. read more

I feel in love with this park the first time I went and there were 20-30 deer hanging out by the entrance (unable to get an accurate count as they refused to fill out a census for and would not stand still long enough for me to count). Since then I always make sure to bring treats for my forest friends (bread or popcorn). This park is giant, almost 1,000 acres. This parks has a little of something for everyone: * 25 miles of trails for jogging, hiking, biking and many are wheelchair accessible * 22 soccer fields, 16 baseball diamonds and 1 basketball court * great playground * a 1.5 acre dog park * 200 picnic tables with grills and 4 pavilions In addition to sharing food with the deers the park is a great place for bird watching. This is actually a review of the McAllister Dog Park and not the actual park itself. Currently there are only two dog parks in S.A. and this one is probably the busiest of the two. I have 2 dogs and they love the chance to get out and smell other dog butts! I am not a huge fan of this park but beggars can't be choosers. The dog park itself is a large space but the park isn't divided for "large dogs" and "small dogs." Other dog parks have the separation but this one doesn't so it's a free for all! I've read complaints about small dogs being injured by big dogs; so it's definitely owner's discretion. The park doesn't have grass, just mulch. There is no doggie pool either! It gets into the 100s in SA and we can't get a doggie pool?!?! I usually go on Sunday's around Noon and it's not terribly crowded. Bottom line: if your dog is well behaved and needs some exercise, take he/she here! Your pup will thank you for it! Tip: the best way to get to the park is from the Wurzbach Pkwy entrance on the side of the park (off Wetmore). That way you can avoid driving through all the winding roads within the park. read more

This park is where I learned to run. Enough said? Heck no. This place is magic... Lots of paved trails, lots of dirt trails, lots of deer and birds. The cardinals are amazing and the forest atmosphere makes me feel like they I am outside city limits. A family friendly park equipped with two full playgrounds, rock walls, soccer fields, and baseball parks, this park beats out all the other SA parks I have been to. Real people go here to run and walk and bike. Everyone is friendly unless they have their head down with earphones - it is a place where you can get lost in nature and the cost is the best: free! If its free, its for me! One tip: If you are looking to run more than 6 miles on paved trails, be prepared to double the park at some point. Last, one great aspect about this park is the Astronomical Society coming out to the park on Tuesday and Wednesday evenings and they bring out their telescopes for everyone to look at the celestial sky. When you think of city, you don't really think about trails or nature, or even wildlife! Located deep in the heart of the Alamo City, McAllister park offers San Antonians a reprieve away from the city life (or "city life" that's city, but still has a small town feel as many would say here) without having to drive an hour away into the hill country. For those looking to hike, McAllister Park has plenty of trails to choose from, and the walk, run, bike, crawl or whatever it is you want to do in the sun is always an amazing experience. I have seen deer each time I visit. They have been mostly friendly, though I am still rather cautious around the ones with the antlers. If you don't feel like having a walk in the forests, you can also find plenty of picnic tables, pavilions, playgrounds &... well fields to enjoy the great outdoors. They also have a dog park for your doggos, though that's one aspect I have yet to experience with my pack. I highly recommend you print off the map if you go on the trails, or at least screenshot it on your phone in one form or another. The different trails connect in peculiar ways, and honestly I have gotten mixed up and ended up somewhere else in the park. I had to use the main roads to navigate myself back to where I parked. I did not mind the extra half mile in my run, but do be careful. read more

A little walkin... a little joggin... a little gobble here and there (ya gotta see the turkeys!) and finding geocaches galore. I've been out here even past dark (they don't close until 10 if memory serves) and the trails can be a little spooky if you're by yourself. But on an occasion or two, ya might run into a critter - the last time I went caching at night, a 'dillo was in the path and saw the light from my flashlight.... too cute! He didn't know what to do since my group & I had startled him. Lol Been to a couple of bbq's out here too and there's plenty of spots to find - even during the summer. :) read more
