First I have to say that it's really a gift to have a small department store in Lafayette and Moraga to shop from. It's not enjoyable going to the mall or shopping areas these days. For this, i'd give 5 stars. The staff, in my experience is also a 5. They have always been courteous to me and I always find something to buy albeit not from the "older" section. Although back in the day, I could always find a pair of pantyhose for those corporate parties. As others have said, I like the selection of items. Great gifts for parties and the free gift wrapping make McCaulous a local favorite. Being retired now, I wanted to pick up some fun work and went in to apply for a job since their Hiring sign has been up for some time. Heck, if they hire young kids, why not me? It was clear that they had no interest in me from the moment they looked me in the eyes and had me complete their one page paper application on th spot. The manager that day looked briefly at my application and said the manager would call me back the following week. Well, I had to call three times before speaking with a manager. When I asked about my application , she said that she didn't think that they were hiring. Um, then why is the hiring sign still up. So, there are big problems here. 1. Why do you need my address? and 2. Why do you need to know how long I have lived there? As I mentioned these areas to the manager, I explained that these questions lead to bias. She seemed to understand and said she would share my concerns. I stated that my intent is not to cause a problem. My intent is only to share my perspective and advice and hope that there would be change. She let me know that Mr. McCaulou has been running the business for over 40 years. I said that it shows. Practices have changed you know. Next time you are shopping here please look around at the staff. I'm a 60 yo Asian woman who just wants to work, and even weekends but I don't fit their criteria obviously. I'll still shop here about once or twice a year but will always be disappointed that they are not inclusive and have a bias that hopefully is unconscious. If management is reading this review, please look at how you are hiring and come out of the 60's in your HR practices.

McCaulou's is a 9 store local department store chain mostly in the East Bay, in nicer suburbs like Orinda, Moraga, Danville, Walnut Creek, etc. It is a throw back, old school type store, remeniscent of a small town JC Penny's without home furnishings. There is a little bit of everything in these stores inluding Men's, Women's, Girls and Boys clothes, shoes, toys, make-up. The prices are discounted, too, so it isn't so expensive like the name brand stores in the local malls in the same town (i..e. Broadway or Stoneridge centers). The help is old school, too. My sales clerk was perhaps 70 years old? Old school white suburbia. It took her 5 minutes to open a dressing room up for me, and she was moving as fast as she could! A long, long time ago, I worked at Capwell's in downtown Oakland. It was an old school department store chain of 5 stores in Oakland (flagship), Fremont (Fremont Hub), Richmond (Hilltop), Walnut Creek and El Cerrito (Plaza). It was a place where all the little old ladies loved to shop: It had a Notions department, Men's Furnishings, Foundations, and a basement with bargain bedding. (When there was a big sale in the basement, the mad crowds would come down, and it was the Sheets!) Capwell's was associated with Weinstock's in the Sacramento area, and Broadway stores in SoCal, and Emporium in SF and the peninsula. Later Macy's bought a few and others were simply closed down. McCaulou's is sort of like Capwell's. If you grew up in the neighborhood, it is a comfortable local store. If you didn't and are just curious out-of-towners, well then, it seems like an oddity from another decade, or maybe century. I did buy a pair of Levi Jeans for $35, on sale from $44 .

Nordstrom itself is still a great place to shop. This review is really for the free styling…read moreservice they offer. I was in need of a professional wardrobe after working from home the last few years. I set up an appointment with a stylist online and she called to ask what I was looking for, my sizes, color preferences etc. I was very specific- I needed an interview suit for my conservative industry, as well as day to day office pieces and shoes. I also said I was open to jewelry (costume - Nordstrom is one of the best stores for costume jewelry that is still high quality IMO). We set an appt and I cane in and she had reserved a large fitting room and had it filled with suits and separates. Everything in row sizes (I'm a 4 or a 6 based on the designer). Nice job of bringing in both high end and more reasonable prices. No shoes, no jewelry, no outfit suggestions. That was the "style" part I really wanted. Basically for a free service it's a nice time saver to have clothes pulled and ready for you to try on. But that's it. I was prepared to spend a lot of money because I hadn't shopped much in a long time and I ended up with a single suit, a blouse, and a random t shirt I later texted the same stylist to ask if she could pull some options for an upcoming wedding I had to go to. Never heard back.

I went back to the store hoping to either return it or at least exchange it for something that would work. The cashier was actually very nice and tried to be helpful. She asked her manager about the return, but unfortunately, the manager was very blunt and came across as rude when explaining that because it was Labor Day weekend, they were not accepting returns for red tags. I understand that stores have policies, but not allowing a return or even an exchange on an item purchased just two days earlier because of a holiday-weekend policy doesn't make much sense to me. I would have appreciated a little more understanding and better customer service from management. I have always associated the Nordstrom name with good customer service, so this experience was especially disappointing. Unfortunately, I won't be returning to this Nordstrom Rack.

We would not have known how to sort through all of the brands and styles of suits and tuxedos. She listened to what we needed and gave us her expert opinion. We ended up buying what she suggested and also got a very nice Men's winter dress jacket. It's felt like such a blessing that she was there and could help us. Months later, my son was visiting from college and needed a new suit for a wedding. While we were on our way there, I was thinking about her and hoping that she was there. She was at the counter and was able to come and take the time to help us. We found him a new suit, shirt, and a pair of shoes. I'm so impressed by how she was able to cut through all of the noise there and help us find something that worked for our needs. She's very kind and helpful. And I appreciate that She offers her opinions. It felt like having a personal shopper guide us. That matters a lot, especially I think in this day and age because often stores don't have that many people helping on the floor. If I hadn't worked with her before, I would never have known that I could even ask somebody to do what she did. She took the overwhelm out of the shopping experience. I give her five stars! Perla represents something rare and valuable that reflects well on Macy's and I wanted to share my thoughts about my experiences with her. I also felt like nothing about what she suggested was over the top and we actually chose to buy more than she suggested. It didn't feel like she was pushing merchandise on us. I mean, I am the one that went looking for her because of the way that she was with us the first time.

This isn't that big of a deal. I wouldn't even deduct a star for this reason. Reason 2- They had 30+ people in here doing inventory. They were walking in front of carts, when we were walking down walkway, they weren't watching where they were going. I stopped stopping to just ring out because it was so overwhelming having all those people in the food section, along with customers and carts. I went to self checkout. Was ringing up my items and a guy came right behind me, knelt to the right of me. I almost back handed him as I thought he was trying to get my purse. I jumped and he said- "I have to get in here". All he had to say was "excuse me" or "to the right" and I would then know he was there. No one should sneak upon anyone that way, let alone a woman. (He had to get in the little fridge to count the inventory.) I work at a store and am in charge of inventory. You give customers space, you watch out for carts, and you never get in their personal space. You sings the row of items, step back let them shop and then continue. Efficiency- With that many people doing inventory, the store is better off closing/roping off the rows of items for 5-10 minutes, then move on to the next row with that many people counting! This way it won't affect the full experience of the customers. Just for this experience I will not return to this location. I talked to the manager in the cashier area, and she said she would tell the store manager. I hope the people they bring in for inventory get a good training because it seemed like pure chaos, when it shouldn't be. A quick 10 minute meeting in the back BEFORE going on the floor. Explaining customer service and personal space. And how to not roam around aimlessly asking "what should I do next". Management, feel free to contact me because for a store this large, I am shocked at the lack of efficiency.
