Kim McClain has been Godsend to our family. She is professional and embodies every quality that a parent would wish for in someone advocating for their child. She is extremely knowledgeable, very attentive to details, and has my child's best interest in mind. She is very clear and straightforward in representing the needs of our child at our IEP meetings. I had previously hired an attorney as we have been on a very long, difficult, and stressful journey with our School district not willing to provide the services that my daughter desperately needs. Special Education Advocate Extraordinaire! Ms. McClain is the woman you want in your corner if you're dealing with difficulties between your child's education and your school district. She knows exactly what to look for and the special education laws applicable and can intervene on your behalf or guide you toward resolution. Her knowledge comes from fighting for her own child, exhaustive research, classes, and mentors. I was so impressed with her vast knowledge of the process and what was supposed to be in place for my child. I feel that I have lots of knowledge myself (as that mama-bear we all become), have lots of personal connections, and have resources to access, but I still found myself fighting the district on something minor but major. When Ms. McClain looked over the IEP and our summary of what had happened regarding our issue, she immediately saw some huge issues missing in the services and assessments my child deserved. These were things that I had no idea should have been happening. My initial issue was still needing to be resolved, but the other issues now became a big deal. She wrote many emails, made many phone calls, and got me in touch with outside help when it looked like we'd need it. She always made sure I understood what was being said, asked for, or communicated, and that I was on board with whatever step she was pursuing next for us. I asked for her to come to the IEP meeting and she showed up ready to work effectively to make sure my son's educational experience was going to be productive. She had great ideas and was a valuable team member. In short, I highly recommend Ms. McClain as a special education advocate and presenter. I can't say enough about the excellent and personalized service Ms. McClain delivers for her clients! She is well versed with special education code and procedures. Not only that but she takes the time to thoroughly assess what kind of services, goals and modifications your child might need. After working with Ms. McClain for approximately 10 months our son has received one-one aide instruction and specialists interventions in his classroom with a more highly qualified educator. We are identifying his visual processing and auditory needs as well as his social emotional concerns. Don't settle for any quick IEP assessments done by your child's school or sadly settle for a rejection of services when you know that your child is in need. I was needing a special-needs advocate for my grandson, who is moderate autistic. The schools make so many promises of what they're going to do for your loved ones, and seem to always fall short. I reached out to Miss Kim McClain, in needing an advocate and the IEP was in two days. Miss McClain reached back out to me and said that she would help us, my God, that was the best decision ever reaching out to her and her accepting us. When we showed up to the IEP, not only did Miss McClain let them know she was not playing, but still through it all she was so kind and respectful to everyone. Miss McClain had information regarding my grandson that I didn't even know, I learned things that was supposed to have been done for Joseph, and wasn't because of her. OMG...I just walked in our emergency school IEP meeting for our son D'Angelo to discuss changing his plan to include ESY (Extended School Year) as he has had it for the past 3 summers and for some reason they had removed ESY this year so I immediately went into action and Ms. McClain coached me on a call last night, guiding me on what to say, what to email them and so forth! I was Overwhelmed and at no to end to my focus. With just a phone call KIM McCLAIN became my ADVOCATE EXTRAORDINAIRE. Very empathetic she too is a parent. When we first started the IEP process we pretty much was accepting of all the information the school was providing me but when we saw our boys were not receiving the resources they needed we realized we need professional help. The more we looked into the whole IEP process we realized it was a myriad of forms, processes, and legality that was just over our heads. Fortunately, we brought Ms. McClain into the matter and it became even clearer that we needed professional help to guide us through our children's rights. Ms. McClain she has been through the process herself and took it upon herself to become intimately acquainted with her child's rights and the intricacies of IEP laws and processes was the perfect advocate to help us. Where she's effected the most is many, but the importance of controlling the IEP room when differences arise in both tone and manner exudes her performance. McClain manages to find common ground with the IEP team, parents and co-parents. She is an example of such advocacies and her recommendations have proven to be exemplary. Her referrals whether it be physicians or support groups speak highly of her as well, often times referring to her as "the fighter." Like the previous reviewers before us, Kim does extremely care, and the environment she refers us to are equal professionals to obtain measurable support for our children. We contacted Kim on the recommendation of another person who gave her high marks. This was one month before our IEP this year. We were afraid that our daughter would be "warehoused" in a second rate program in a different school district within our SELPA. We had visited this program prior to contacting Kim and saw things like aides on their cell phones, children playing with themselves in full view or simply "checked out" and not attending to the instruction. Kim was amazing because one month is not enough time to get things in shape (I think Kim's biggest wish for prospective clients with IEP issues is to get representation as early as possible). Kim is patient, compassionate, intelligent and professional. She held our hand throughout the lengthy process and got us through some rough patches. She educated us in many ways too (e.g., testing, rights, food issues) In the end we signed off on an IEP (about 4 months after our initial meeting) that we were happy to accept (Kim has her own opinions on whether we should have signed off, I'm sharing this with you so that you understand that Kim is your child's advocate and she'll make her opinions clear. We agree to disagree and Kim is very gracious about that). Our daughter will be remaining in our school district (and in her original school) with quality staffing and supervision. Kim has a special insight and empathy that few others have, her daughter is on the spectrum too. Through Kim's dedication and hard work her daughter has made AMAZING progress. Kim was gracious enough to allow us to meet and interact with her daughter so that we could see with our own eyes how far her own child has come. What I admire about Kim is her dedication and mental toughness. She is the type of advocate you want to bring into the room with you when your family is being pushed around by the school district. Kim will show you how to stand up and fight for your child's rights. Know this: Kim is not timid about voicing her opinions and will stand up to you (parents) just as easily as standing up to the school district. So if you are looking for someone to "boss around", Kim is not best choice for you. She has done so much for our family, my review only scratches the surface. For example, she went and got someone to watch her daughter so that she could attend our early morning (7:20am) IEP. How many others would do that ? Upon meeting you and listening to your testimony as a mother advocating for her daughter, I felt compelled to understand how you would be a benefit to teaching staff and support staff at my place of employment. Your class was a tremendous support. It has empowered staff to support parents with advocating for their children regarding the understanding of the types of assessments that can be requested, forms needing to be completed, etc. In addition, your testimonies and experiences shared during the training touched the hearts of many. I've had the privilege of knowing Kim McClain as a fellow mom, friend and professional. Emphasis on the professional. When I felt my son's IEP team was not taking me seriously, I brought Kim in to advocate for him, which is exactly what she did. Sometimes as a parent it is hard to push the school, because of the relationships you have there, and it is emotional for you. Kim was able to be tough while always being professional and respectful to all members of the team, and was able to fight for my son while maintaining an atmosphere of dialogue and mutual respect in our IEP meetings. She listened to my husband and I, and our concerns for our son, and made suggestions based on her great experience. Gratitude, gratitude, and more gratitude expresses my primary feelings about Kim McClain. Both my wife and I are extremely grateful that Ms. McClain was our daughter's advocated with our school district. Directly because of her our daughter is now reading at grade level. Our daughter in one school went from not reading at all to reading at grade level. Without Ms. McClain this would not have happened. With Ms. McClain's help our school district enrolled our daughter in their reading clinic and wonders happened. I met with Ms. McClain after a referral via a close family member. I had been searching for an advocate, prior to putting up a fight with my child's school district. I must say that Ms. McClain is extremely knowledgeable and displayed a deep interest in my case and concerns. She provided me with a great deal of information and notes that would help guide me through this process. I found her to be very trust worthy, honest and no doubt a no non-sense individual. She also brought along her child whom also suffers from ASD, whom was extremely bright and courteous. In doing so she gave me a sense of hope that my child too can also recover from the huge regression he suffered from having ASD.
