McCoy Pavilion was a significant landmark and the location of annual celebrations. I wish I could at least report that the contractor (DieDie Construction) had provided some temporary access to the beach so that disabled persons would be able to cross the Queen Street bridge and access the beach. Alas, they have not. Vines which grew thick over the barrier fence for the project have been recently removed so perhaps there is some hope. In the last few days a late model pickup truck with the DieDie Construction logo has been arriving with a crew of one man. Progress continues to be very slow. The large sign posted proudly announcing the 3.6 million dollar project has been graffiti covered which speaks to the lack of progress. However, that one gentleman arriving the last few days in a truck gives us some hope!!! read more

OPA!!! Well, that's as far as I know about the Greek language..........but today, after attending the 2016 Greek Festival, I learned a little bit more of this beautiful culture. 2016 marks the 35th year of the Greek Festival, and I'm not sure how many years they have held the Greek Festival event at the McCoy Pavilion. I must say the Greek Festival is a great venue to learn about the beautiful Greek culture, foods, music, dance, Orthodox religion, & art! I mostly enjoyed the unique music, as well as some of the delicious food that was served here. Entrance to the event was just $3.00 smackaz, and upon entering, you can get your hand stamped, so incase you decide to leave, you can comeback later. After entering the event, there's a table where you need to buy "scripts" so you can buy your food & other items. The McCoy Pavilion is pretty spacious, but may seem a bit cramped when there are a lot of people attending an event. Luckily the Pavilion has an indoor area, as well as a spacious outdoor area. I noticed the outdoor area had some beautiful ponds, as well as large trees that provided some very good shade in the outdoor area (which was very helpful). What a lifesaver, them trees! Especially when it's scorching hot outside (like today)!!! The McCoy Pavilion is located in the Ala Moana Beach Park..........located towards the Ewa end of the park. Parking can be a little tough at times, especially over the weekend because Ala Moana Beach Park is heavily used. If you cannot find parking at the park, may I suggest to park at Ala Moana Shopping Center, or like us today.........we parked at the Hokua Building, and then walked across the street to the McCoy Pavilion. read more

Thank You EMI and Yelp again for the complimentary Tickets to the Greek Festival at the McCoy Pavillion 2016. The check in for the Yelp Guest List was on the Ewa Entrance of the Pavillion, it was an easy Check in. Regular Pricing is 3$ for adults and Kids 11 and under and military are free. Food-Scripts are needed for food, they take Cash or Check NO credit/debit cards, there was an ATM in the Front Food Prices were a little pricey but I didn't mind becuase I love Greek Food and this is the place to get authentic items. At the Festival there was a Jewelry booth, clothing booth, Greek Coffee, Greek Alcohol tent, Desserts, breads and jellies, cookies, marinades, market items and many authentic foods. There is also a separate area that serves Chicken and Vegetarian plates. The reason that I like this festival is because the atmosphere is really chill. I enjoy walking around to the booths and sampling Greek food that Ive never tried before. And an Alcohol tent with Greek wine and beer, I was sold! My favorites this year was the Gyros which were awesome! and the Baklava Cheesecake was so unique it was a baklava top, cheesecake in the middle and the bottom layer was a cake, so it was a perfect combination of the flakiness of a Baklava and its toppings, then the sweet creaminess of cheesecake with the bottom being like a white cake it just evened everything out. Background-2016 marked the 35th year of the Greek Festival. There are NO outside food vendors here, this is put on by less than 40 Greek families that are part of the Yassas from Saints Constantine & Helen Greek Orthodox Cathedral of the Pacific, proceeds go to the ministries and other local charities. Entertainment was great, i didn't understand a word, but the singers and musicians were so good and a lot of people were dancing traditional greek dances. The atmosphere was lively and entertaining. The McCoy Pavillionj-is a great place for this festival however, I really think that the state needs to keep this place up, there were cracks in some areas that they had to put cones around, and a crumbling concrete slab in the middle with caution tape around it, it really made the area look dilapidated. There's a lot of potential with this site, definitely needs a face lift. Overall, I enjoyed my self and I'll need to hit the gym this week. Disclaimer: this festival is not as big as the Okinawan festival in Hawaii this is on a much smaller scale but I like the intimacy and the atmosphere and I love tasting and seeing a glimpse of other cultures that are in Hawaii. Ópa!!! You can't help but have fun at the annual Greek Festival held at the McCoy Pavilion across from Ala Moana Center and not that far from Magic Island. We park at Ala Moana Center and walk over. Bring a hat. It's very hot outside. We took the whole family. I love that Hawaii has festivals for all the cultures to represent the multiculturalism in the islands. It's a great to visit festivals to learn about languages, cuisines, music, dancing, religion and history. The cost of admission to this particular festival is quite reasonable. $3 for adults and children under the age of 11 don't pay. There's a discount for active duty military members. The food is probably the biggest draw of this festival. Greek food is scrumptious. Lamb, souvlaki, Greek Salad, gyros and even a vegan Greek meal are all wonderful. The food is probably the biggest draw to most who attend the festival, but there are plenty of options beyond what I listed. Best: the gyros. We had several gyros because once you gyro you can't stop. The pastries are decadent. You won't be able to resist the delicious looking desserts. The classic baklava is my favorite. It's reasonably priced at $3.50. There are other pastries including a chocolate baklava for the chocoholics. See the dancing in air conditioned comfort. We especially enjoyed the dancing done in traditional Greek attire. Greek dancing is lively and engaging. Have some ice cold lemonade. The pork souvlaki which is a pork tenderloin on a wooden skewer served with a pretty dry tasting pita bread was a complete miss. But you win some and you lose some. This is not a huge festival with thousands of people. It's a small to medium festival and I like that. Overall, the festival was hit with us and we plan to visit again next year. read more

I've been to a few events at this location and it's been hot every time LOL. It's located right in the center of alamoana Beach Park right next to the tennis courts. The best thing of this location is that they have a little stage area inside where it's air-conditioned. The most recent event that I went to with the Latino Fest where all the vendors came together and sold their yummy food. I had a good time. read more

Here is a lucky I live HI if I have ever saw one. Back in IL or NY you have city venues that you can rent for this or that. Here is a place that is the very best location for events that I have had the pleasure of volunteering for when HI TESOL an ESL like club and Head Start have had to have events for groups of people. It is a great venue with a kitchen when we need it and a location that offers surf and sand with chairs and tables when needed! So lucky we live HI! read more

I think this is one of the high lights of Honolulu. Just walking through the ponds and the pavilion is a nice retreat from the buildings and traffic of downtown just across the street. I just came from the Story Telling Festival there last night, and I had a pretty good time there. Just a nice and peaceful place. read more

Today GREEK festival was held there and I have to say that it is a nice outdoor venue however it was bloody HOT there were trees there to provide some shade but we oriental people do not like to get dark! So all the corners of the shade was already spoken for.. :( There isn't much room to roam around the venue when it is packed, the whole time I was there I kept looking at the water filled with little fishes swimming around and how dirty it was and scared that clumsy me would fall in there.. it was a distraction I mean if the water was nice and clean then I wouldn't have been worrying so much about the falling part but just the embarrassment part. Seriously even the fishes look deprived in the ponds.. There isn't much sitting area in there, there were stairs to sit on but no benches. I think that they should have a huge tent up to prevent the sun glowing in our faces... I really hope this place stays open but they definitely need to revamp it, dazzle it up a little, maybe even make it a bigger place where there is actually enough seating for a concert, wouldn't that be nice??? yes it would be.. :) read more

McCoy Pavilion Didn't even know this place existed... It's basically a Hall at a beach. I came here for the first time for the Greek festival. Place is spacious with an open lanai which had couple of lily ponds and outdoor picnic tables. There seemed to be one large dining hall with a stage. This place would be great for large formal gatherings such as weddings and Bar Mitzvahs. The goods... ample parking and venue is spacious. The meh... bathrooms are shared with beach goers. read more

New home of the Scottish Festival held every April. Great location plenty of room for retail vendors in the halls. Festival uses the main room for the Highland Dancing competition, the Dining room for the cultural clans displays, kids games go in the grass by the dry fountain. Food vendors & the main stage go in the large courtyard. Water & electricity is available as are some tables & chairs. Highland Athletic Games & sword fighting reenactments go in the grass outside the walls. Its a fun place, right across the street from the water. I have come here on numerous occasions for different reasons of course. It has changed a lot over the years and now they have a snack bar. It's nice if you want an ice cold beverage and not one that has been sitting in the sun all day. They also host the Greek festival here but it's not the best location since everything seems so packed together. Location is nice and central but parking sucks unless you park at the mall and walk over. It probably needs some fixing up but alas there's no money in the city budget for such a luxury. read more

I haven't been here in nine years, since a Pau Kahana closing ceremony that I was in, back in spring of 2001. Today was my students' Martin Luther King Jr. Internation Peace poem awards ceremony. We carpooled and got here an hour early. It is Friday and it seemed like students were furloughed, not doing their homework, and out at the beach with the families. Parallel parking seemed scarce and we were lucky to find a parking space. We were following the truck of one of my student's families. There seemed to be one major room with a stage, red curtains, chairs set up, and lots of air conditioning (it was 87 degrees outside). The ceremony was nice, with students from grades K-10 being honored for their award winning poems. Mayor Hanneman was en route from the U.S. mainland and was not available to hand out award certificates. This is a pavillion near a beach and provides public restrooms to beach go-ers. I was waiting to use the restroom when three women, returning from the beach were speaking very loudly, often times swearing amongst themselves and between the bathroom stalls. There were also mothers with their very young children, parents of the students being awarded today, waiting to use the bathroom. After listening to these other women and I was done with the bathroom, I went back to the awards ceremony and told my friends about how these other women were shouting at each other, over the bathroom stalls. I figured I'd wait for another bathroom break instead of going back into this public beach bathroom today. My students and I took a lot of photographs after their poetry recital was over. It was a good day, besides the shouting in the bathroom. read more

I think this is one of the more underrated venues in the Ala Moana/ Ala Moana beach park area. Its conveniently located right across from the beach and right next to the tennis courts over there. I came here several times for mini festivals and events such as the Greek festival. Its definitely an interesting place to hold events. They have a couple of conference rooms including one where they have a projector and mini stage are for showing films. The outside area is pretty nice. Near the entrance, they have some outside grass and table areas. The main outside area by the pond/lake is pretty interesting. The surrounding pond area makes it all intertwiney which is almost like a maze. The restrooms are alright. If someone who wants to organize an event here and really knows how to utilize the space that they have and offer here then they can pull out a really great event. The parking is always doing to be iffy depending on the situation and circumstances because you are sharing with park users and beach goers. It might not be the biggest venue location out there but it is definitely an option. If you haven't been to an event here I suggest you go check it out. This is for the Greek Festival at the McCoy Pavilion every August which we love to attend annually. Great information about Greece, movies and entertainment as well as the local cuisine. It's fun and the outdoor atmosphere makes it one big party. If you like to dance and join the crowd, this is for you. My husband chats with friends as I dance the night away with new and old friends. Once in Chicago's Greek district, I bought an entire bakery box filled with Melomakarona Greek cookies to bring home. Unfortunately, by the time I flew back home, they were pretty much consumed. God, they were so delicious and addictive. Thank goodness I won't bake them otherwise they'd be the death of me! Some things are just meant to be enjoyed. OOPA! read more
