I have been getting my propane filled here for years. They will refill your tank while you wait, and charge you only for the fuel you use. I paid less than $9 for my last fill. That works out much cheaper than those propane exchange scams. Recently I bought an Echo chainsaw, and the sale price was better than the big box stores, and they offer a free service within 30 days to tune the motor. I also bought a hard case for the chainsaw, and the price was surprisingly good. It wasn't in stock but they ordered it for me to pick up the next day, and here we are. Took my Stihl chainsaw in that I bought there, one of the best ever made, and told them it had been sitting up for a year and the carborator was flooding. After three weeks they finally said it had a scratched cylinder and needed a short block. The kid at the counter had a phone conversation with the mechanic who was 50 feet away, refused to let me talk to the mechanic , and told me that they could not fix it. Actually, what he said was they would not fix it. I believe they just figured on selling another expensive saw. Turns out when I took it to an individaul mechanic, the diaphram was old and hard. Carburetor rebuild like I told them in the first place was all it took, cost me $25, cost them a longtime customer and valuable reference. Disappointed in customer service. Brought mower in because blades were hitting each other, thinking broke spindle. I left blades off and bolts in spindle. After repair which they said was not the spindle but pulley and belt was the reason and replaced those. Bolts were not there and blades were not on. So how did they know if the blades did not hit each othe and problem fixed For Tyler to tell me what I said was hearsay. Where do I even begin? I had to take my Wright Stander B back four times for the same issue - the right side wouldn't pull - and I ended up spending nearly $2,500. This all started after they replaced the drive belt. Then they supposedly replaced the left transaxle, but after mowing a few lawns, the problem came right back. Fed up, I decided to try a different repair shop, and guess what? They fixed it by adjusting the belt tension. A simple fix! I was without my machine from May to September for that! read more

I like this place. Good service and fair prices. BUT, the delays in getting equipment repaired are enormous. I've brought my mower in several times over the last few years and it's often a whole month before they even have a look at it! I can understand why things can get backed up occasionally, but it seems to be the default there. I'd expect no more than a week or two. Have to wonder why they can't seem to gin up a larger number of repair people. I should add, and bump up my rating, because although I was told this time that the fix on my mower would take a month, it seems to have taken them just FIVE DAYS! That is a bit unusual, but I'm not complaining! I can hope that this short timescale is something that is going to become more common. read more

I was a regular customer of this store for years. After my recent experience in the repair shop with a certain "Chad" I will absolutely never set foot inside this place again. This guy in my opinion was extremely rude, insulting, and unbeliveably sarcastic and has no clue how to treat a customer, and I was a good customer. I went in to pick up my tool and it was long past the date when I was told it would be repaired and ready, but no one had touched it, and I drove a long way to pick it up. I was a little upset, and then I asked a guy named Shawn (who was very helpful and nice) for another date that I could rely on for it to be ready, and he started to expedite the repair. But suddenly, this (imho) disgusting creep named Chad suddenly enters the conversation and takes over and starts insulting me and berating me and utters sarcastic comments, like it's my fault the tool wasn't repaired when it was supposed to be. He then lies to me about how long it would take to repair the tool if I waited, much longer than it actually does. Hey McCoys, in my view, this lowlife a__hole named Chad is a liability to your shop, and I certainly won't be back until he is no longer there. I cannot recommend anyone to patronize your store as long as he works there. In my view, this guy is working against your business and drives away customers, he certainly drove me away, forever. I strongly recommend everyone to stay away from this location, unless of course you wanted to be belittled with sarcasm and insults and treated like dirt. So this is a follow up to the less than stellar review I gave them a few weeks ago. When they did finally have my saw ready.....they had it for a total of 8 weeks. Not only did the manager come up an personally apologize he did not charge me for the repairs and gave me a free chain. I understand everyone makes mistakes but how they handle them is what gets my loyalty. He could have just as easily said sorry and sent me on my way. It's amazing how far a gal will drive to get the straight dope on a machine without getting attitude for being a girl. Seriously. Besides, I have gotten really sick of paying less at the DIY warehouses (take your pick), having my tool go horribly wrong and basically being told that it was my fault. I first discovered this place when I was trying to find a very specific string trimmer. No one around here had one and hadn't actually seen one. I called many stores across Austin and finally rushed across Austin to check out the machine at McCoys. After some frank discussion, I actually bought a cheaper machine. Recently I went back for a chainsaw that I would feel safe using to cut down lots and lots of brush. I'm definitely "of solid peasant stock", as they say, but you get tired with surprising speed when wielding one of these machines. Again, I got just the right tool for me and straight talk on how to keep it happy. Even the bypass lopper I bought has been of higher quality than that garbage I got from from the DIY places!!! Yes, you will pay a slightly higher price (but really, not enough to make a huge difference if you have saved enough for your tool in the first place). Yes, this place is inconvenient if you live far away. Your effort will, however, be rewarded with honest service and very high quality. They sell yard maintenance equipment: chain saws, trimmers, hedgers, sprayers, chippers, and a ton of other things. They provide service for chain saws. I'm sure they provide service for other items also, but chain saws I am *certain* they repair. There are two locations. This review is only for the one listed at the above location. Ok, they are not automotive but there was no category for lawn equipment. I needed a part for my chainsaw and time was short. I had to get it that day! The place I normally go did not have the part. These guys hooked me up and brought back my faith in customer service! I will drive 3.5 miles past another place to service my lawn equipment and my next chain saw purchase will come from McCoys Lawn Equipment Center on Research just past Taco Cabana. Wow - incredible! I'm so grateful - they fixed my problem in only hours, after being stuck for the last 3 weeks with no resolution in sight and an unbelievable level of frustration. I have a Sears cordless mower that began leaving a Mohawk strip on my lawn. After 4 phone calls to Sears (wait time average: 35 min), no answers (one hangup), endless research on the web while I was on terminal hold, 3 trips to Sears, purchasing the blade myself, then discovering I couldn't remove the plastic bolt (yes, plastic) that held on the blade, I was ready for Those Who Had Not Helped Me to commit hari kari ... then one of the Sears guys greatly redeemed himself by giving me McCoy's contact info. After only one phone call, one visit (Research Blvd), five minutes, and $5.00, I'm back home & mowing, much to my happiness (and my neighbors' ). Polite, fast, knowledgeable, inexpensive (different than cheap), I highly recommend them to all and hope to save you hours/days/weeks of frustration. read more

Be aware, you don't get what you pay for at McCoys. I Go to buy a Makita dual battery string trimmer at McCoys lawn equipment on Research Blvd. I question him about the charger not being a dual battery charger. He said that's how it comes. I pay for the trimmer kit and take it to the truck but was concerned about the charger. Checking online shows a dual charger included. I returned inside and showed him what I found. He exchanged the single charger for a dual charger. I looked on the wall and noticed a sign - "Buy the trimmer and receive a free Makita cordless grinder." I leave again, this time with the dual charger and grinder. read more

Took lawnmower in for repair and was told they would call if repair over $100. Two weeks later I got email that "your repaired unit is ready for pickup" so I went to shop expecting to pick up "repaired unit." Found out it was beyond repair and they were "too busy" to bother to call me - and that the email really didn't mean it was "repaired." I got to pay $27 for the assessment and crappy attitude from one of the service guys. Be careful in what they tell you. I'm not going back. read more

Great guys, Jimmy is an awesome mechanic and the owners are a hoot. They are a bit busy and hard to get your stuff out quickly, but if you get in good with them they will take darn good care of you and get it done right. I am happy with these guys, and unfortunatly so is everyone else so its hard to get in, but when you do its worth the wait, most of the time. I would give it a zero if Yelp would let me. These people are not truthful. I dropped off a Mikita electric leaf blower on September 2nd that was not working. I was informed that it would take a week to get to it, which was fine. At two weeks I called to check the status and was told it had not been looked at yet. I was told the Mikita website had been down so they could not troubleshoot it, which I told them I understood. I was also told the website was back up and it would be looked at within the next two days. I called three days later and was told it had not been looked at and that the mechanic was real busy. I informed the guy what was going on and he promised me he would get an answer from the mechanic that day or he'd go look at it, either way he'd call me back that day. Well that didn't happen. So a week later (October 1st,) I just went to pick it up figuring it hadn't been touched which was correct. I didn't cause a scene or raise my voice, I simply asked for the owner's name. Jerry would not give me this information and said "I'm going to take care of you, just give me a chance". He gave me my batteries back because he was going to try and get me a new blower. He asked me if it was registered or did I have the receipt, which I let him know I got it a couple of years ago and not from that store and no I hadn't registered it. He said "I'm not saying anything but we don't know if it was stolen, picked out of the trash, etc". To me Jerry kind of sounded like he was saying something. I just brought it in for a repair, I didn't ask about it being covered under warranty. A customer walked in and Jerry said "I have a customer" to which I said I believe I was here before that person today and technically I've been waiting since September 1st to be waited on. Jerry said "Sir, I'm trying to get hold of the rep." (assuming he's referring to the Mikita rep). Jerry stated he would call me later that day, which did not happen. Jerry did apologize for that when he left me a VM saying " if you come in and buy one of those blowers, it comes with four batteries so it's like getting the blower for free, let me know what you want to do." How the heck does that not help me? I've already got the four batteries, they had my blower for a month and never touched it. All I did was ask for the owner's name. I call at two weeks, and twice afterwards only because they said they'd call me which never happened. These guys know that these events are the truth and undeniable. Too bad the owners don't know, so this business practice can be stopped. It's no wonder they have more 1 Star reviews then they have 5,4 or 3 Star reviews. read more

9 weeks and nothing done - I took my power washer for repair 4/16/18. Two weeks later, I called for status report and was told I needed to authorize repair up to $100 (they hadn't called me). A couple of weeks later, I called and they said they needed to order parts. A couple of weeks later, I called and was told parts were not in. Today, 6/19/18, 9 weeks later, I called and told them I was going to pick up my unrepaired power mower and go somewhere else. When I picked it up, I was told that the parts had never been ordered. Then to make matters worse it was not properly set up and configured for operation when delivered. Fortunately we have folks here who straightened it out. Horrible experience on a lawnmower repair at the S Congress location. After 1 month and 3 visits - it still did not work. The only person who saw the mower start was the mechanic in the workshop. Not once would it start when anyone else was around. While unimpressive, that is not the reason for the 1 star rating. What really upset me was that on my first trip to pick it up I paid my bill before testing the mower. They never actually fixed the mower but refused to refund my payment. Shysters If you do decide to try this place for a repair, be prepared for long delays getting your machine back and make sure you test the repair BEFORE paying. Brought my mower to Northern Tool and it was fixed in 2 days at 1/2 the cost. read more

I took my mower in nearly 2 months ago, for a tune up and to see what repairs it needed as it didn't stop as usual when letting go of the release. Three weeks later, after no contact, I went to check on it and was told they were JUST now taking in to look at it as they'd been "backed up". I went in today to check on it and was told that it'd been ready for 2 weeks. Again, apparently no one there knows how to use a phone. I paid over $70 on top of my $30 deposit, and was led outside to wait. Watched my mower being led into the shop from apparently outside storage, where I waited for about 5 minutes or so, and then was asked to come to the shop area. My mower was being taken apart and I was told that apparently there was a "rock or something in the line" and something was wrong with the carburator". I replied with, "You told me it was ready." The mechanic got extremely snippy with me and said "Well it was, two weeks ago!". I assured him that I hadn't used it in the last two weeks as it'd been sitting here, apparently in the rain and that maybe there was water in the tank. They'd just poured gasoline all in the carb trying to get it started and it reeked of gas. I couldn't put it in my car that way and I said they'd have to clean that off but it needed to be fixed first. He said "Whatever, dude." I didn't appreciate the flippant attitude after paying a hundred bucks and waiting two months for absolutely NOTHING, no phone call and leaving my items out in the rain, and the abysmal service. Additionally, when I walked in at the beginning of this adventure today, there was another employee talking about a female customer who'd just left. His discussion was "Man, she was pissed!". Other employee; "Who?" 1st employee: "That lady. Saying "I'm never coming back here again, and all"." I wonder why. Consider that a duplicate. I chose McCoy's because it was closer than the shop I'd been to on Burnet which just happened to be closed on Mondays, the day I was looking for repair. Forget that. I also thought that the appearance of the store and presence was more professional than the smaller location, but they have it down 100% over this place. Never again. Maybe for a new sale, perhaps, but the service department absolutely sucks in rudeness and delivery and the mechanic should never be allowed to talk to customers if he doesn't understand how to do so with a professional demeanor. read more

World-class help at the Service Desk! Couldn't get my Echo Chain Saw started; fresh fuel, new plug properly gapped & torqued, followed cold-start instructions in manual... not even a sputter. Brought in my saw expecting 2-weeks in the shop and $100 repair. Instead, the service desk guy said, "Let me try it." We stepped out on the back porch, he did a few things in rapid succession, and BINGO, it started right up. He advised that 2-cycle engines are easy to flood, and then went through step-by-step the starting procedure that he used (totally different than the Echo manual). The next morning, I followed his procedure, and... BINGO, it started right up! Been a McCoy's customer since 1998. This kind of great service keeps me coming back. Bravo, McCoy's! read more

First of all I LOVE my Lawnboy 10424 push mower! AWESOME, light, will cut a jungle of growth, asks for minimal maintenance and just a little oil in the gasoline. Second I am very mechanically inclined but occasionally limited on available time so will once in a while leave tasks that need done right away to the profesionalls (until they prove otherwise). McCoy's Lawn Equipment on Research happened to prove otherwise. I picked them because they were close to my office, a favorite resturant and seemed to be doing a lot of repairs for landscape companies. When I dropped off my little green friend I informed them it needed a complete tuneup and the recoil started needed replaced. After 2 weeks it was ready or so I was told. I got it home and it still had the recoil starter issue and took several pulls to start. I mowed this way twice until it just wouldn't start the third time and I happened to have a little time to see what was up. So while my son ran the Shindawia trimmer around (another great product) I proceeded to pull the top off the 10424 and see what was up with the carburator. Long story short the carburator wasn't touched! I removed it and it had quite a bit of crud in the bottom not to mention was caked in dirt. I removed it and did a complete cleaning of the outside and inside then reassembled the mower. I had not addressed the recoil starter issue yet but wanted to see if it would start and run. With a half hearted pull it fired right up and ran perfectly. My son mowed the lawn and I cleaned things up. The recoil starter will get ordered online and I will replace it myself. So my $40 and 2 weeks of waiting were for a foam air filter and sparkplug, nothing more. read more

These guys have exceeded my expectations twice. First time was when I asked them to replace my lawnmower blade. They said it usually wasn't necessary. I explained that my wife really wanted a new blade on it. They did it and it was done right and for not too much money. Second time was more recent - I bought a Stihl electric weed whacker and it died while using it the very first time. Brought it in the next day and they quickly and without hassle gave me a new one that works great. read more

Very expensive and then when they tried to show me it worked, the mower wouldn't start because they left it out in the rain. I had to come back later in the day to get it. Then my boyfriend started mowing with it. It was totally his doing that the sparkplug wire came loose while getting up under the bushes but, they didn't have to call him a stupid idiot when we brought it back in! Stupid idiots are people who act that way towards customers that are there because they don't know how to work on machinery. Before, when the mower wouldn't start because they left it out in the rain, I wasn't going back. Now, I will tell everyone what a bunch of stupid idiots work at this place. read more

Super nice guys, but the customer service is terrible. I had many problems with ordering the part, paying for the part, getting the part shipped to me, the cost of shipping. They were not willing to do anything, not even ship it to me after many issues and mistakes and over 3 weeks of waiting. I do not recommend anyone going there because they will not stand behind there service, not with me at least. Tried to get info on what they had in stock over the phone but the guy who answered assured me they had a large assortment and could get me what I needed. Out of four guys hanging around the front desk, only one was vaguely interested in being helpful; he is the one who earns this place the second star, otherwise it would be only one. Poor customer service, dishonest staff, and extremely long wait for repairs. My elderly grandfather brought in his Honda gasoline push mower and they misplaced it and then LIED to him when called every other week for 3 months straight. They specifically told him "the parts were going to be here soon" and "it would be ready next week". When I got back into town from overseas business I went by in person to sort this out on behalf of my grandfather. It was obvious that the staff had NO CLUE where his mower was on their own premises. After hunting around for 20 minutes they finally found it underneath a tarp, forgotten in a corner. They had not done a lick of work on it in the 3 months that they had it in their possession and it had a layer of dust on top of it to prove it. All it needed was a throttle cable and a new carb and carb gasket. While they were able to replace the throttle cable they did NOTHING to fix the carb. After we got the mower home and realized the carb was still acting up I bought a new carb and gasket online and installed it myself in my grandfather's garage. Shame on you McCoy's! They were WAY more focused on selling us new equipment than fixing our existing equipment. The mower in question is an older Honda with parts EASILY found on the internet by Googling the model number and looking at a few photos to ID the parts and part numbers. Had I known this I would have fixed it myself to begin with, but alas I was out of town when gramps needed it fixed. The fact that it took a visit in person to get an employee to actually do anything speaks volumes about this company. It honestly pains me to write a bad review about a locally owned company with a good track record. I hope management can whip the repair department into shape so other customers don't experience what we did. read more

Ive tried to deal with these folks for a couple of years. They have great stock and sell the best products available. Stihl, Echo, Shindaiwa, etc. I was considering buying a particular chain saw since I had heard that it was very dependable but was being discontinued. I wanted to see one so first so I called McCoys north location. They told me that it was a great saw, they had them in stock and that they had bought everyone available from the distributor. They told me they had the last of these saws so I planned to buy the saw the next time I was in Austin. I dont live very close to McCoys so when I stopped at a small engine shop closer to where I live to buy trimmer line, I told the owner the story about the saw that McCoys had told me. He said he thought they were still available, called the distributor and told me that the distributor said they had 160 of the saws left in their stock but these were the last ones available. I didnt buy my saw from McCoys --- and wont. Earlier, I had taken an unusual piece of equipment with a Tecumseh engine to them for repair. They said they could get any part that was needed for it but for September, they were "unusually" busy. They would get to it as soon as they could, a time that they estimated was in 3 to 4 weeks. Four months later, I picked it up with missing parts. They claimed that they hadn't worked on it so the parts had to be missing when I brought it in. (During the four months they had it, I had called them several times and was told more than once that the mechanic had looked at it and would get on it next week), Before I took it to them, I had tried to start it and believe that I would have noticed that its carburetor was missing. When I talked to "manager/probably owner" he said that he had to believe what the mechanic said. He did graciously offered to pay for 1/2 the cost of the replacement parts that are not available anywhere. They have the best inventory, decent locations, are locally owned and will lie to you. From now on, I'll go anywhere else. read more
