My wife and I have taken two of our dogs(Minnie and Bitsy) for surgery with Dr. Dean. We had the…read morefirst surgery done 5/2018 and the most recent one done 5/2019. Both of our dogs are very small(6-10lbs) Pomchis and they both had extremely large lipomas(tumors) in similar pelvic locations. Two other surgeons told us that due to the locations of the growths, it was very possible that serious permanent nerve damage could be done to them as a result of the surgical procedure. Over the preceding six months before locating Dr. Dean, we visited multiple vets(Abilene, Austin, Brownwood, Dallas) in an attempt to get an accurate diagnoses of their problem and what could be done. Several told us(with no lab tests), that it was "probably cancer" and they should be "put to sleep", but we obviously didn't quite trust those opinions. When we took them to see Dr. Dean, he examined them, performed the lab work and took the x-rays we had tried to get at other places. He told us it was obvious they were benign lipomas and even considering the delicate location, he thought they could be safely removed. We scheduled Minnie, who had the most advanced tumor for surgery, which was accomplished in May of last year. Minnie came through the surgery even better than we hoped and fully recovered in just a few weeks, with no complications whatsoever. At all times FWVS exhibited an extremely high level of professionalism and caring that we were pleasantly surprised about and very grateful for. We received regular updates while we waited during the surgery and the office followed up in later days to see how she was doing. They were also very quick to address any questions or concerns we had. It's been over a year now and Minnie is still a happy and healthy dog. When it came time for Bitsy's surgery, even though we had moved from Texas to Missouri, we drove her all the way back to Fort Worth for her surgery. Her procedure was performed just this last May. She is older and also has health complications from injuries received in a house fire several years ago, so we were even more worried about her than we were about Minnie. However, like the surgery a year earlier, it went great, there were zero complications and she fully recovered within a few weeks. The high level of care shown to us in 2018 was also unchanged this time around and again exceeded our expectations. It's now been 3 months, and she is not only back to normal, but seems to be in better health and spirits than she has been in years. Finally, while the cost of these surgeries versus what our dogs mean to us, made money a non-issue, FWVS quoted us prices for both procedures that were about one-third lower than several other offices we visited. These prices even included us opting for the use of a safer and more expensive anesthesia drug in both procedures. If, your pet faces a significant health challenge that requires surgery, you absolutely won't find a better place to take them than FWVS and Dr. Dean.

During all postoperative follow‑up visits, I was consistently told that his recovery appeared to be progressing normally. Unfortunately, Jack later developed significant complications that required care from other veterinarians and specialists. This led to additional procedures, extensive treatment, and a long rehabilitation process. Despite all of this, Jack continues to have limited mobility. He also has an ongoing issue with instability in his right knee, and rehabilitation for that side could only begin after the complications with his left leg were stabilized. After everything Jack went through, I reached out to Dr. Dean in good faith to share the full medical outcome and to ask whether there was any guidance, support, or perspective the clinic was willing to offer. I did not ask for money or make any demands. While there was brief acknowledgment of a misunderstanding, my follow‑up message received no response, and the matter was left unresolved. I understand that complications can occur in veterinary medicine. What was most disappointing for me was the lack of communication and follow‑up when things did not go as planned. During such a difficult and emotional situation, responsiveness and professionalism matter greatly. I hope this review helps others consider not only the surgical care, but also the communication and support they may experience if complications arise.

My best friend was having seizures after a tussle with one of our other dogs. When we came in they rushed him to trauma care and started treating him immediately. The staff and Dr were very supportive and caring. Once they explained what was going on they let my wife and I come to the decision to let him go without any coaxing or pushing. They have private rooms where you can sit with your family and pets for as long as you want. When it came time to say goodbye the vet explained everything to me. Again, they were very caring and compassionate. I will always miss him, but they made it easier to say goodbye. I would recommend them to anyone.

Based on what I could see, I suspected he may have had something stuck in his paw, possibly a splinter, but I couldn't get a good enough look to confirm. About 30 minutes after dropping him off, a veterinary technician called asking for authorization to perform X-rays. I explained that this seemed excessive given my dog's symptoms and asked whether the veterinarian had examined him yet. The technician told me the veterinarian had not. I requested that my dog first receive a thorough physical examination before moving to advanced diagnostics, and specifically asked them to look at an inflamed digit that I had noticed. Roughly 30 minutes later, I received another call. I was told the veterinarian was still recommending X-rays. I asked whether a thorough examination had now been completed and was told yes. I then asked whether his paw had been shaved to allow a proper inspection of the inflamed area. The answer was no. I expressed my concern that diagnostics were being recommended before fully investigating the most obvious potential source of the problem. I made it clear that I was willing to approve X-rays if they were truly necessary, but I wanted the paw examined thoroughly first. Another 30 minutes later, the veterinarian called and informed me that X-rays had already been performed and showed no fractures. At that point, his paw still had not been shaved or closely examined as I had repeatedly requested. This was extremely frustrating. I felt my concerns as the owner and primary caretaker were being dismissed rather than considered as part of the diagnostic process. During the conversation, I explained that my issue was not with the veterinarian's experience or expertise. My concern was that the clinic appeared more focused on pursuing billable diagnostics than conducting a thorough examination of the most likely source of the problem. Rather than explaining the medical reasoning behind the recommended approach, I felt I was repeatedly being pushed toward expensive testing without clear justification. Ultimately, my dog was sent home with pain medication and an anti-inflammatory medication despite no definitive cause being identified. Unfortunately, this is the second time I have felt unheard at this clinic. I own three dogs and have never hesitated to spend money on their care when it is necessary. Cost was never the issue. The issue was communication, transparency, and the feeling that my concerns were not being taken seriously. After speaking with the veterinarian, the practice manager, Liz, called me to discuss the situation. During that conversation, I requested records for all three of my dogs and asked about a credit for a previously purchased service that was never used. Liz told me everything would be ready in approximately 20 minutes, so I informed her I would return then to pick up my dog. When I arrived, the receptionist began reviewing medications and charges. When I asked about the credit I had already discussed with Liz, she initially appeared unaware of the situation despite notes being present in my file. After reviewing the notes, she informed me the credit would not be applied. By this point, I simply wanted to pay and leave. What happened next was even more disappointing. The receptionist made a snide remark during our interaction. While I acknowledge that I was frustrated, customer-facing staff should be trained to handle upset clients professionally. More importantly, management failed to properly prepare the front desk staff for a situation they already knew existed. Since Liz was aware of my concerns and previous conversations, she should have either handled the checkout herself or ensured the receptionist was fully briefed. The interaction ultimately escalated to the point where I was told to wait outside and was threatened with having the police called for trespassing while my dog was still in the clinic's possession. I found this response completely unprofessional and inappropriate. The most concerning part of this experience is that the same communication failures that affected me as a client can also affect patient care. Veterinary medicine relies on collaboration between pet owners and medical professionals. When owners feel ignored, concerns go unaddressed, and communication breaks down, it undermines trust in the care being provided. I will not be returning to this clinic. Their lack of communication, professionalism, and willingness to listen has cost them a long-term client with three dogs who routinely receive veterinary care.
