We ordered the sesame crusted tuna salad which was very good; the steak sandwiches were good but mostly bread; the hot chicken sandwiches were not spicy, but very good and juicy; the Ceasar with fried oysters was average, the sauce was not very flavorful and the fried oysters were limited. We are in town for a wedding and decided to try McEwen's. Hubby got the Sea Bass....i tried it... The risotto was under cooked... and the orange soy glacé was a bit sweet... sweet is not what I look for on fish. I got the filet medium rare. It was cook to medium rare and a large portion but it was an inferior piece meat.... Hubby decide to get a piece of chocolate chess pie and coffee... it was a dinky slice and the hot but not good... service was the bright spot. No complaints there.... The filet was cooked as requested. It was juicy and had a good flavor. The green beans were perfectly steamed. The grits were good too. The salmon was moist and flavorful. They have biscuits that when are hot, taste just like KFC. Melt in your mouth. It was busy but the service was great. Considering the location of McEwen's, I was expecting more. When I can throw a stone and hit ten 4 or 5 star restaurants, I wouldn't come back here. Our server was lovely but clearly overmatched and it took 25 minutes for our appetizer of a tomato salad to arrive. Not a big deal but we hadn't even ordered yet, 35 minutes in while surrounded by empty tables. I cannot overstate how disappointing our meal was. My wife had salmon, which was obviously a frozen plank of fish thawed prior to serving; & it tasted as bad as it sounds. She would have sent it back, but the reality is it would not have come back better. I had the pork tenderloin, which actually tasted better than its presentation. Now, make no mistake, the dish looked like 4 slices of pork sitting atop a can of Dinty Moore chili with green crema and a dozen or so pieces of corn sprinkled atop, but at least the tenderloin was cooked medium rare. I ate it all because I hadn't eaten all day, but I wouldn't have put this combination together if it were the only things left in my kitchen pantry. Little did we know, the brussel sprout appetizer and drinks would be the highlights of the meal. This place should be better & shame on them for not. We've eaten at McEwan's in Memphis on numerous occasions and left impressed, but this place is not remotely close. Needless to say, we will not be back. read more

Their Old Fashioned is made with liquid bitters and simple syrup. This has been consistent in all of the restaurants I've visited in Oxford though, so it was to be expected, but still disappointing. It was also served with regular ice cubes, which I was also pretty disappointed in. My waiter, after going to check with the bartender on some of my questions, said he liked the Smokehouse Sunset. I said I would take it. It was pretty dang good! There's a lot going on in that cocktail and is pretty sweet, but I understand a lot of people like that. The biscuits served after being seated are wonderfully aromatic. They are light and fluffy on the inside with a wonderful, buttery crispiness on the outside. I'm not ashamed to say I ate two of them before my meal! The hostess was very polite. My waiter was as well. I appreciated his swiftness as he was attentive and checked in on me periodically without hovering. The cedar plank salmon was light, flaky, and buttery - BEAUTIFULLY cooked. I was a little disappointed by the lack of flavor. The green beans were cooked perfectly as well, but were also were lacking in flavor. The cheesecake of the day was cappuccino. Again, lacking in depth of flavor, but it was pretty tasty! I guess what I'm trying to say is, this place is geared towards certain clientele. Their food is cooked well, but has very little flavor. There is a decent range of wines, the ambience is rustic chique (maybe?? depending on where you sit), and the lighting doesn't make you feel like you're eating in a cave. The staff is great. I've been here just a couple different times, but McEwen's has definitely left me with a positive impression. In my visits I've tried a couple of the fish dishes and one of the steak meals. Everything has been cooked to my liking and the waitstaff have always been attentive and helpful. Location is also a big bonus as McEwen's in right off of The Square and easy walking distant of many attractions and bars. Definitely worth a stop if you're in the area! read more

We ordered the Pork Belly Carbonara it should've been called the Sun Dried Tomato Carbonara instead. There were seriously two pieces of pork belly one was the size of the Lego circled in the picture and the other piece was a thin slice. I told the waitress she told the manager and they said they would bring me some more in which they did but it arrived after we we're completely finished with our meal. We also had the drunken chicken which was very juicy to the point of being mush. Our waitress offered a free dessert which we politely declined I'm confident our cookie from Insomnia cookie was much better than any dessert we could have gotten here. Excellent food and service. Our waiter was knowledgeable, professional and friendly. He knew the menu well. Several of us had the salmon, which was perfectly cooked. I had the crab cake dinner portion (2 cakes), which was small but good with an interesting mix of tomatoes, okra and other vegetables around the crab cakes. Banana cream pie for dessert- several layers of smooth, creamy filling. We were in the restaurant on a night when the students were still on winter break so it was quiet and we had a nice, oval table at the front overlooking the Square. Phenomenal food - we ordered the bbq sweet potato fries as an app, salmon and NY strip. All three were amazing. My husband loved the orzo that came with mine so much he got an extra side for his entree. Our waitress was extremely nice, helpful and attentive without hovering. Wine was great. My blackened catfish was awesome, dark and seasoned better than I ever had in New Orleans. Rice was good and stewed orca very nice. My wedge salad was great and the thin peppercorn (at least to me) and blue cheese crumbles was very good too. My wife was not as satisfied with her ettoufee. Oxford during "peak" times is an interesting place. It's a small college town that - for the most part - deals very admirably with a big crowd of folks from across the country. For those restaurants that are at the top of the game, the situation is "elevated". McEwens is probably the best restaurant on the square. It's quaint, well appointed, chef driven, well run and has the hallmarks of a place where the owners care. The staff - mostly students and former students are kind, nice, well trained and poised. I enjoy supporting these places - and they really don't need the support!. Unlike most places, they take reservations, which you have to make, some weeks ahead - on those peak days. On this particular night we showed up for our reservations. In front of us, was a man and a woman (adults, in their 50s) letting a poor kid have it....they were 40 minutes early for their reservation and could not be seated....well - the grown man took his turn yelling at the student at the desk, then the lady did worse.....the girl was in tears. But she was poised - I felt so bad....when those cretins were sat, they picked themselves up, dusted themselves off and got on with it - it was so great to see - grace under pressure. And yeah - I hope those people got a couple flat tires on the way home - they need to stay in. Anyway - the food - rather spectacular. Everything they make is flavorful, expertly done, balanced and tasty. On this night, we had tuna tartare - savory on a nice bed of crisp veggies, a tomato salad that was really nice (can you use burrata instead?) and a Caesar salad, crisp and fresh. Chicken, salmon and sea bass followed. They were perfect. Anderson, our excellent server talked me into the Sea Bass and he was so right - this is a standard, a new classic. Crispy and moist at the same time with a balanced jus.....so good. The staff (Anderson and Mary Morgan and the entire host stand) were above the cut. The food was tremendous and it was a nice night in the end. We will be back often. read more

I went here with one of my best friends while visiting in Oxford. I haven't been to this establishment since it was called The Waltz.......old I know. We sat down and order drinks. We both had a mojito and wow it was delicious! Cool, crisp and refreshing. I inhaled it and before I knew it, I was ordering another one. She instead ordered a margarita for a second round. She said that was just as good. We were so busy talking that we finally began to order. For starters we had the steak and toast. It was simply divine and the bleu cheese really set off a creamy note with the beef. Whats better than beef and cheese? More beef and cheese!! lol! Once we savored all the flavors of the starter, she had the Char-Grilled Rack of Lamb and I had the Pan Seared Chilean Sea Bass. The fish was succulent and the orange soy glaze wasn't over bearing. It lightly kissed the fish and sent it on a well deserved delicious journey to the land of my tummy. I tried the lamb chops and they were seasoned and cooked to my bff's liking. Another friend joined us mid meal and had the Seared Duck breast. I can't comment on this dish because they took it to go and I wasn't able to stick my hand in their box fast enough to try anything lol. For dessert, bff and I each had creme brûlée and our other friend had the bread pudding. I didn't enjoy the creme brûlée. It was curdling or something. That was a lot of lumps. Also it didn't have a nice sugary crust that I could break through. Instead it was lightly dusted with sugar and caramelized. This is a nice place to eat, I just would get the creme brûlée. It rubbed me the wrong way. Everything else was great. Also, make reservations. We did and something tells me this place and can get busy on the weekends since it is on the square. This place is pricy so bring some extra dollars if you bringing a date! read more
