With a large spruce tree abutting the driveway, we had extensive root intrusion, water problems in our basement, and old garage doors we wanted to preserve. Because we had to coordinate removing a tree, having the stump and some roots that ran along the driveway ground down to the proper depth to accommodate the footings for the Belgian block border, and shaving the garage doors, Mr. McFarlane had to come back several times to check on the stages of progress. He was even nice enough to consult with the tree company owner to make sure they were on the same page. Mr. McFarlane always returned our calls the same day, arrived promptly when he said he would be there, and gave us a sense of wellbeing and confidence that you don't often find with lesser contractors. I met with Peter Sr. a few times and am very impressed at how responsive he is compared to other driveway companies in the area. He has been in business and doing driveways for 50 years! Before we hired him, I also reached out to a neighbor that used the same company and they are very happy with the results. Peter Sr., and his two sons (Brennan and Peter jr) and a couple of other of their team members just removed our old driveway and installed a beautiful driveway. They were so meticulous with installing the belgium blocks on the borders at a 45 degree angle that it looks like a work of art. We can tell that this company does not try to short the customers on materials. Everything from using the large size Belgium blocks, the footings, 6" stone base of the driveway, asphalt etc. We can tell that these guys did not want to leave until the job was 100% perfect. They certainly were not the cheapest quote we received, but during the process of choosing a company to completely redo our driveway, Peter McFarlane was honest about everything that needed to be done and why. Peter is a straight shooter and takes pride in his work. He is extremely knowledgeable about his craft and does high quality work. There are no corners cut and no shortcuts taken. My neighbor who had her driveway done about the same time as mine, with a very well known paving company in bergen county, is already in need of repair as it is obvious shortcuts were taken. It looks twice as old as mine. My driveway after several years has held up quite well by comparison. Peter's son who runs the crew is also very knowledgeable, has a pleasant way about him, and made good recommendations we implemented the day of the job. I highly recommend Pete and McFarlane Paving. We needed a new asphalt driveway very badly. It is huge along with a number of additional problems of buried Belgium blocks, dips and curves, tree roots and a buried broken concrete garage apron area. They handled each of these problems magnificently and at no extra charge! Their overall price was lower than the other quotes I had gotten too. Plus being as careful as they are, they uncovered a beautiful 90 year old slate patio under the original asphalt driveway by our stairs coming down to the driveway. Need I say, most other contractors probably would have just ripped up this treasure! So I can highly recommend McFarlane Paving. I would just like to change their name to McFarlane Artistic Paving. McFarlane did a high-quality complete replacement of my driveway in about 3 consecutive work days (with no absences to tend to other jobs, as some contractors do). We asked for a couple of extras (such as extending roof drainage pipes and replacing a manhole cover) and these were priced at a completely fair price (a rare thing, in my experience).
