Last week, my husband and I made our bi-yearly trip to Kentucky for our whiskey and bourbon adventure. After spending the day visiting distilleries, I was ready for something a little different, so my husband suggested we stop by McIntyre & Family Winery. I'm so glad we did. From the moment we walked in, we felt genuinely welcomed. Nikki greeted us, took the time to explain their wines and tasting options, and made us feel right at home. A little while later, the owner, who is also named Nikki, came over to introduce herself. Both of these ladies were incredibly kind, down-to-earth, and passionate about what they do. What was supposed to be a quick stop turned into two wonderful hours of conversation, laughter, and wine tasting. I've visited quite a few wineries over the years, but this one truly stood out. I loved how unique and creative the wines were. They weren't afraid to offer something different, with wines like Corn Cob, Daylily, and Rose Petal Tea. I know some of those might sound unusual, but they're absolutely worth trying with an open mind. My personal favorite was the Blackberry Truffle--it was unlike anything I've ever tasted and, without question, the bottle I couldn't leave without. One thing I also appreciated was that they had beer available for anyone in the group who isn't a wine drinker, making it a place everyone can enjoy. More than anything, what made this visit so memorable wasn't just the wine--it was the people. You can tell there's a lot of heart behind this winery, and that kind of hospitality is something you don't forget. If you ever find yourself in Bardstown, I can't recommend McIntyre & Family Winery enough. It ended up being one of the highlights of our trip, and I already know we'll be back. read more

It has been a few years since we last visited, but this was probably our fourth or fifth time stopping in here. My husband and I love stopping in here when we are near Bardstown because it is so different from your typical winery. All of their wines are made from the berries, fruit, etc that they are named after and not with grapes, so it is always fun to try the different wines they offer. We brought our friends with us this time since we were all on our way to Heaven Hill for a distillery tour together. They had a fun time for their first visit and we both ended up purchasing a bottle of their corn cob wine (we also got a semi-sweet cranberry wine). Shannon (or maybe her name was Sharon) was so friendly and kept us laughing with jokes during our tasting. She gave us some tips on what wines paired well together or with a cocktail. She also told us how long some of the wines take to make, where they source some of their berries, etc. Can't wait until our next visit! read more

Tried to go in and have some wine. The bartender was so rude we felt incredibly uncomfortable. Ended up having to leave.

This unique winery is tucked into the hills of Bardstown, KY. They have a long and varied list of berry wines including Elderberry, Blackberry, Strawberry and Black Currant (my new favorite! The kids enjoyed picking blueberries in the field. The porch is used for events like a wedding reception scheduled for later. The owner has AirBnB houses that back up to the winery if you want to be within walking distance. It doesn't have a full restaurant though, just wine, cheese and locally made beef jerky, so plan accordingly. read more

This is an adorable small town winery! The staff were so sweet, and even when they had to help other customers, she always kept us updated. We had a wine tasting that consisted of 6 wines each. This winery is focused on fruit wine, and if you've ever seen Schitts Creek, we were ready to say, "This wine is awful... get me another glass!" truly, that didn't happen. They have wines for every palate! I tend to like more dry wines, but in this case, since they were all fruit based, most of my favorites were the semi sweet wines. I've added our tasting notes below, but definitely check it out for yourself! Malbec (dry) - strong plumb finish Black currant (dry) - bitter finish Elderberry (dry) - very acidic Cranberry (dry) - very smooth, great on its own, or she recommended pairing it with champagne for a holiday drink Strawberry (dry) - smooth, berry, and mildly tart Blackberry (semisweet) - good finish Blueberry (semisweet) - mildly sweet, loved this one! It was my personal fav! Persimmon (semi sweet) - would be good served cold, earthy, honey tones Elderberry (semi sweet) - acidic, we wanted to like all the elderberry wines, but it didn't appeal to us Clan McIntyre Port (semi sweet) - hints of licorice, pepper, and some fruits. This was my boyfriend's fav! He loves port, though! Raspberry (semisweet) - very smooth and mildly sweet. This would be a dessert wine I'd enjoy (not so sweet). I should have done some more homework . . . One site referred to McIntyre as "voted #2 winery in Kentucky", and others voted it very highly. I immediately added it to our recent road trip agenda. What I did not learn until we arrived yesterday was that it was pretty much strictly a non-grape fruit winery. None of the 4 of us were fans of any of the wines that we sipped on or tasted. Honestly, if this is the #2-rated winery in KY, I'd be very wary of visiting the #3 and lower-rated wineries. Maybe fruit wines are a Kentucky thing? read more

I bought a Groupon for this winery, $12 for a tasting for two and souvenir wine glasses. Saves about 2 bucks, so why not? We drove about an hour to get here and it deemed itself worthy. Like many other reviews say, the wines are fruit based, so it's all about preference on whether you will like it or not. I love fruity, sweet wines so this place was right up my alley. They have so many awesome flavors, like green apple and black cherry, that it was hard for me to only to be able to pick 6! They also give you Cheez Its to munch on while enjoying your wine. The service was okay, no more no less. They also have wine slushy machines, merchandise to browse through, and a little patio in the front. It's basically in a renovated house, but you have a beautiful backyard that you can walk around! I like this place, mainly for the kind of wine they offer. If I ever go through Bardstown again, I wouldn't mind making another pit stop here! read more

Such an amazing little place! When you drive up the hill and around, you kinda might worry about where you're heading. But don't worry, if you see the Bud Light sign on the window behind the McIntyre's banner, you're in the right place! The new building was just built last year (if I remember correctly), and it's a nice open space. I do like the vineyards (bare right now because of the winter, but we'll be back for summer). We got to see a little of the winemaking process and it's really absolutely amazing for a small production. My favorite? The rose petal wine. read more

We had a great time wine tasting here! The woman who was working was a ton of fun- we were the only ones in there so we spent some time trying different wines and talking with her. They have SO MANY different varieties here, and so many really unique and interesting ones! I would definitely come back and try more of them because there are so many more I didn't get to try. The taste was very hit or miss, but it was totally worth it just so now I can say I've had dandelion wine (even though it tastes terrible lol). They also have a port slushie, which I've never seen before, and it was easily the BEST thing I tried. Highly recommend! read more

I am a poor excuse of a female in their 20's because I am not a wine drinker. I know a ton of girls that consider themselves wine experts (aka wine snobs in my opinion) but I never got the hype. It takes me at least 2 hours to finish one glass because I get bored with it. My friend said she had a Groupon for 2 wine tastings and asked if I wanted to go. I agreed hoping that I would appreciate wine more. We drove about an hour to the winery and in my opinion, it was worth it. After looking at the menu, I realized I knew absolutely nothing about wine. I did not know fruit wine was a thing and I did not know the difference between sweet, semi and dry. Luckily my friend enjoys wine because she basically had to tell me everything. Our tasting consisted of 6 wines of our choice. I went with sweet and semi wines since dry did not sound appealing. 5 of the 6 wines were very good. The Apple and Cranberry wine tasted like juice so I recommend those. I came to the conclusion that if I drink wine, it has to be a small size so I don't get bored with it. I still don't consider myself a big wine drinker but I'm glad my first winery experience was at McIntyre. read more

While visiting the Bourbon Trail, we took a little detour from bourbon and happened upon this little family owned and operated winery. It was one of the best and unexpected decisions of the trip! We spent a couple of hours with the owner, who shared his wines and the wine-making process with us. He was such a gracious host and explained the passion he has for wine making and keeping this business running and in the family. We purchased several bottles from him, including a local Malbec, a very unique corn cob wine, and a perfect raspberry chocolate which we will have for dessert in the future. I heart this place. I want to go back there now. In a small little house on a nice piece of land, Tommy makes and sells his fruit wines. Unlike most places that make fruit wines, McIntyre's offers every one of his varieties in dry, semi-sweet, and sweet versions. During our tasting, he was personable and friendly. We bought several bottles of wine, and hung around for a while, drinking our bottle of Daylily wine, walking around the vineyard area and enjoying the weather. This was one of my favorite visits to a winery I've ever taken. Do yourself a favor and find your way to visit McIntyre's. Bring a picnic with you! Impromptu stop at this winery while I'm Bardstown one Saturday afternoon. They have a brand new tasting room that's quiet cozy with room for a live band or music on the weekend. When you check in on Yelp here you get 50% off your tasting!! My husband and I both did a tasting and the lady working either had a very dry personality or just didn't want to be there. The wines were good, however none were chilled, they were all at room temperature. I'm more of a chilled wine kinda gal and I think it changes the flavor when chilled. We both agreed on a couple wines we both like equally as well as one that my husband really wanted. After getting home and chilling the Pomegranate which is one we both chose I'm not a fan. The wine is good but you must take that into consideration when visiting here. Overall it was an ok experience. Had the lady working been a little more personable I would have probably given them a 4 star review. read more

It has been a few months since visiting this winery. I hate that it has taken me so long to write up a review. The reason? I've been trying to think of just the right thing to say about McIntyre's Winery. As I sit here typing, I'm still not sure if I have the right words to say about this place! This winery is AMAZING! I've never been much on wine. I never understood it. Dry? Sweet? Semi-sweet? Whaaaa? Before this winery, I had visited a few wineries because my lovely is into wine. With other wineries, you get to try 6 to 8 wines. While they walk you through the wines, I hadn't been able to distinguish the difference between super dry and super sweet. Well... that changed with McIntyre's! The owner is awesome. Tommy is too kind. While there, I believe he told us that he has been making wine for four or five years now. He's open to letting you try most of what you want. On this particular day, he had around 15 wines. Each of them had a dry, sweet, and semi-sweet variation. I didn't try everything, but I had more than my fair share of samples. Tommy is making great wine and he wants to share it with the world. I never buy wine at wineries, but at McIntyre's I walked away with two bottles! One of those bottles was a blackberry wine that's 18%! Every drop of it was tasty. Tommy will also show you his process in the back room if you're curious. This winery is in a small house. Tommy lives next door. It's cozy. During our tasting, a guy came in and needed three bottles of something. Tommy helped him out quickly and sent him on his way. I didn't even realize the break in our tastings. His daughter also stopped by with her new puppy! This place reminded me of home. McIntyre's also experiments with flavors. Dandelion, Elderberry, Daylily, Green Apple, and Apricot to name a few. There were other flowers and fruits too that you normally don't see at your average winery. Bottles are inexpensive. He has small bottles(2 glasses worth) that are in the 6-8 dollar range. The majority of their bottles run in the 12-15 dollar range. The blackberry bottle that I picked up was 25, but that's because it was 18%. It was worth every penny. You also get a complimentary glass to take with you. This winery really is a 5-star experience in every way. I've only visited a dozen or so wineries in the last year, but I can easily tell you that this is the best one of them all. My advice: You should look at your calendar right now. The next day you have available, go ahead and mark that day as McIntyre's day. I plan to make another trip sometime this Spring. On the day we were there it was cold, but when it warms up I believe Tommy will let you see where he grows everything. It's behind the winery on his farm. I've been to this winery a few times now and I'm just not a fan. I'm not sure if it's because it's more fruit based wines and not your usual grapes or what. Tasting fee is minimal and you get to try 6 wines. I did purchase a bottle for a gift but there was nothing that I just HAD to have for myself. They do have some different wines such as rose petal and corn cob that are fun to try. They often have Groupons as well. read more

This is a lovely setting with a great staff and wonderful wines. I prefer sweet wines, and they have a good selection of them, but they also have a good selection of dry and semi wines. I really, really wanted to like this winery. My husband and I had planned a month in advance to come to this winery after going on the KY dinner train. I've seen so many good reviews, and it was close, so I bought a Groupon (2 tastings for $8 - which you can't beat), and we put it on our calendars. We walked in and there were 2 ladies behind the bar, neither of which welcomed us, considering there was only one other gentleman at the bar. We walked up and asked if we could sit anywhere and said we had a Groupon for the tasting. They specialize in fruit wine, most of which, if I remember correctly is grown on the estate. We were allowed 6 tastings, and even though they are a fruit winery, they offered both dry and sweet wines. With all the fruit wines available I became more excited to start the tasting. After our first tasting was poured, I asked a few questions about the wine. Sadly, I didn't feel like the associate wanted to talk to us, so I let it be. My husband and I did our tasting and unfortunately, out of 12 tastings, we didn't like any of them. A couple of the sweet wines tasted like sugar water. We didn't stay for a glass and as we walked out my husband mentioned he had a headache. I was really disappointed but probably would have enjoyed ourselves a little more if the lady assisting us was a little more friendly. read more

Headache In A Bottle If you are a red wine drinker, hard pass on this one. For anyone who actually likes wine this place will be a major disappointment. He uses absolutely zero grapes in everything that he bottles, leaving you with glorified alcoholic fruit juice. Everything is super sweet, and is just a headache waiting to happen. The owner was nice enough to show us his facilities and process, which is the only reason I'm giving two stars instead of one. If you know nothing about wine and prefer the sweater types like Riesling or Moscato, you might find something you like (though you'll pay twice what it's worth). Where to begin...! I am a big fan of bourbon tours, but have recently gone on a number of winery tours as well. This was by far the BEST winery I have ever been to. Tommy made that possible. Tommy is not only the owner but he also makes all of the wines. He will let you taste any wine he has, even some that he might be running out of; but the coolest thing Tommy will do, is take you to the kitchen where he makes his wines and will explain the process, and walk you through what wine he is making right now. That is not something any winery I have been to has done before... Seriously, it might look like just a house, but this is a MUST for anyone looking to try good local wines. read more

Just like all of the Kentucky Bourbon trailing Yelpers before me, I loved this place too. I think it's the first time that I'd visited a winery that had absolute no grape wines. All fruit and flower wines here. Lilies are my favorite flower, and it was here that I tasted them for the first time. I tried both the dry and semi sweet versions and didn't care for the earthy, wild taste. And then there was dandelion wine. I now feel accomplished, so many firsts in one day. My favorites were the dry strawberry and elderberry wines. I ended up only taking one bottle of the strawberry dry home. Because even though it's categorized as dry, that only means that there was no sugar added... so the natural sugars in it still makes it a bit sweet. Each flavor of wine comes as a dry, semi and sweet version. I was told that all of the wines are 12% alcohol, but I have to say that I really don't think so... The location is a bit odd... With houses close by, in each side of the tasting room, the area kind of reminds you of a subdivision. After chatting with the owner, he explained that he lives next door and grows most of the fruit and berries that his wines are made of. He even showed us around and explained the entire process... it was pretty neat. Don't forget to get your passport stamped there. After you visit and have 8 Kentucky wineries stamp your passport, they will give you a wine coozy. This was my 10th Kentucky winery on the list and I somehow still can't mange to remember to get my passport stamped... I picked up another one here, so I'll try again. read more

The wine maker is certainly creative and you will enjoy wines that may seem untraditional but well worth trying. Not only the wines but the local lady managing the tasting room was a real treat. I am not normally a fan of sweet wines, so I inwardly groaned when I learned my friends wanted to go to a fruit winery. Luckily, we had a Groupon for the experience, so I figured I could try it at least once. I am SO glad I did. Tommy, the winemaker at McIntyre's makes wines from seven fruits (blackberry, blueberry, cherry, elderberry, peach, pear, and strawberry) and one flower (daylily), but he does each of them at three sweetness levels: dry (no added sugar), semi-sweet (2% sugar), and sweet (7% sugar). Thus, there are wines here for everyone. While I didn't love every wine I tried, I was surprised to find that I loved at least one level of each type of fruit and that it wasn't always the same one. The dry blueberry showcased the floral notes of the berry, while the semi-sweet peach highlighted the natural fruit flavors without too much tartness. Trying all three types of each fruit taught me how much "seasoning" and sweetness have to do with a great wine and how the recipes can't be one-size-fits all with the same results because of the differences with the fruits. The biggest surprise was the daylily wine, which was different from anything I have ever tried. Somewhat buttery with golden raisin to start, it has a floral middle and a green, grassy finish. I absolutely had to bring home a bottle just for the uniqueness factor. He finished with a slushy wine that was out of this world. Apparently he tried to find someone to share their slushy mix recipe with him and, when he couldn't, his wife made up one of her own. Tommy was the sweetest guy. He told us in-depth what went into each of his wines, where he sourced the fruits (many are from his backyard), gave us nonstop crackers and even brought a bowl of water for my puppy. Afterward, he gave us a tour of the back and showed us how he makes and bottles wines. Once we bought a bottle, he suggested we take a walk around the blueberry vines in the back and enjoy the weather. We strolled around with my puppy, photographing his barn in the sunset. He told us to bring a picnic lunch the next time and I absolutely will. Overall, Tommy's prices are ridiculously reasonable, to the point I felt guilty using a Groupon. I can't think of any other local winery where I could buy three bottles of wine and still feel like I was the one winning. I will definitely be back to this place. read more
