I had spoken to other therapists in the past, and had achieved some lasting effects, but nothing could have prepared me for the impactful work that we were able to do together in a very short period of time. Honestly, I was a bit skeptical at first, but after a few sessions, it was truly incredible how much we were able to make progress against some pretty traumatic incidents. Additionally, it should be mentioned that the level of compassion I was treated with was really unmatched. My stellar counselor, Shannan, was willing to continue those chapters with me to go further in my healing and fight alongside of me for the territory of my heart. In addition to the chapters, the weekly podcasts were practical, at times witty, and richly empowering to listen to John and Beth share from the deep well of their experiences, inviting all to living the abundant life in Christ. We did not have the knowledge that we now have after eight years on our recovery journey. If your child has endured a trauma and is diagnosed with PTSD, please do not take them to an eating disorder center. Take them to a trauma-informed psychologist that specializes in trauma recovery. This psychologist is best equipped to advise you on trauma residential facilities that will address all the responses to trauma that your child is experiencing. An eating disorder is just one part of the equation. If you don't resolve the trauma, you will NEVER resolve the eating disorder. And if you do not resolve the trauma, your child will seek out other ways to cope such as alcohol, drugs, self harm, high risk behavior, etc. Just make sure that you seek only trauma-informed psychologists who can guide you on this recovery journey. Also, please be aware that many of these facilities, such as Renfew, will quote you a price for their program..and then after you are in the program and nearing the end, they will tell you, before the program is over, that they underestimated your financial responsibility, and your insurance company will not pay any additional funds, so you will have to pay out of pocket to complete the program. This is a common practice with many facilities, as we had to learn the hardway. Lastly, be aware that Renfrew includes teenage girls with mature women in these group therapy sessions. As a result, you will have mature women talking about topics that you would not want your teenager daughter to be exposed to. Our daughter was not happy. And neither were we. Otherwise, we believe that Renfrew works best for women who have no trauma, but struggle with eating disorders. God bless you in your journey.
