    McMilln"s
    Tom E.

I have spent zero time in Puget Sound since 1981, when a tiny coffee roaster with a cool, green mermaid logo was starting up near the printing business of an acquaintance. But my Dad had, plus a brother who had a Skipper's license to sail, and earned a Motor Trawler Qualification during COVID. The world has changed. When I was a boy, this harbor was the site of a failed lime company, a decrepit hotel, and a handful of hardy islanders. Now it is slick, buffed up, capitalized and modernized. Since my home harbor is in Arizona, I call it "Sedona of the Sound." It is May 14, 2026. We are on The Sound for a number of reasons. A sister's birthday, a brother's love of vacation adventure and other family business. He booked us into McMillin's this evening. My devoted followers, my dozen readers, my fans; on this journey I've touched on farm to table a bit. Our McMillin's dinner was farm to table squared. The Pacific Northwest is a part of our planet wealthy beyond understanding. The Native People of the region displayed their wealth, and generosity, with the Potlatch tradition; products of the sacred earth given away. Social status determined by how much a family or clan gifted to others. The natural wealth remaining operates on a different model, we all know well. Some of the gifts from Mother Earth have changed, the bounty remains. When a group of talented, dedicated humans prepare the highest quality of earth's bounty, a delicious, and for Sweet D and me, a rare, dining experience lay dead ahead. With a harbor view to our port side. Our appetizers were oysters and calamari. The best tasting oysters I've ever eaten, sweet from the sea. Oysters farmed and grown in an inlet a mile up the road. The buttermilk marinated, sliced and breaded squid caught nearby. No deliciously breaded tiny tough rings and curly tentacles. These were sliced, breaded, tender "Calamari fries" delighting all at our table. Superb cocktails, vexcellent Athletic NA pale ale. My favorite NA is Clausthaler, this is a finish line tie. My friend Lal Fernando drinks Clausthaler to keep his kidneys healthy. He related to me the elected leaders of the Baha'i Faith in Israel drink it for Their Health at some meetings. Beet salad, House Specialty bleu cheese salad. In my mind the average beet brings "earthy" to mind. McMillin's does not serve average beets. We definitely had Bassano, and likely Sweet Beets ringing our delicate stack of mixed greens, with balsamic sprinkles. Beautiful, fresh, sweet, healthy. My brother had the bleu cheese Specialty. Again, the lovely greens dressed in a mild bleu cheese, nice on the palate. Main courses: Prime rib, salmon, Okanogan Valley Wagyu beef. Asparagus vegetable side. Prime Rib, another House Specialty from an Okanagon Valley Ranch. You have three choices: Roasted, seared or blackened on 700 degree cast iron. If you know the Okanogan Valley, even emasculated bulls relish the skies, weather, perfect pastures and towering peaks. Prime rib regular roasted, medium rare, tasting of sweet grass, perfect seasons and pure mountain snowmelt and Pacific rains. Wagyu - Japanese feeding style, well marbled beef is eaten rare or mediym rare for maximum flavor. My tradition has become medium well to well done. Our shared 8 ounce cut had good flavor and tenderness. The United States Pacific Coast until 1935 was likely the planet's most productive wild salmon fishery. McMillin's will serve the region's best Salmon, cooking it perfectly. My sister sang praises. There is no fish like native fish fresh from it's native waters. It is THE fish to eat. Washington State produces a large percentage of Our Nation's asparagus. McMillin's asparagus, robust, highest quality Northwest asparagus, tender, sweet, with mild post-asparagus dining effects. Our dessert was Creme brulee, four fresh raspberries on top. Happy Birthday Sis. A thin, crackling brulee over a soft, slightly sweet custard. Berries quartered so all could have a bite of rasberry and brulee. I had my standard dessert cup of coffee. This is not my style of dining. My brother arranged this very special dinner because this was onr of the final times three of we five children gathered together in unity and harmony to close out generational family tasks. If you want a fine dining experience on San Juan Island, or on The Sound, we all recommend McMillin's

We came to have an anniversary dinner here. We made a reservation, and we were seated right away. Server Sarah was very nice, friendly, helpful with the menu, and so quick with service. This was the best steak I've ever had. It was cooked to my specifications and was just like so tender and melted in my mouth. Not dry or tough at all. It was a very romantic setting and great for conversation. We recommend and will be back again.

Mostly good food, excellent service, and beautiful views of Roche Harbor. For appetizers the crab cakes were huge and full of delicious crab meat, Caesar salad was a decent portion with a nice tang that I appreciated, and the crab bisque was okay but we wished there was more crab flavor and that the crab meat wasn't chewy. My father-in-law really enjoyed his prime rib, and from overhearing neighboring tables it was a hit everywhere. Salmon was cooked well but was disappointing because it was ora salmon and not Copper River. The special was a black cod that was also cooked perfectly but lacked a strong miso flavor that I would expect. Also really enjoyed our cocktails, my manhattan was strong, my wife's spritzer and my daughter's pomegranate ginger mocktail were refreshing. Overall the food was good but overpriced, about what you'd expect for a tourist destination. Have to give a shout out to the service here, it's top notch. Our server Sarah was friendly, personable, and a joy to talk to, and Domani was attentive and proactive to all our needs. Thank you both for making our evening memorable.

    Seafood pasta pappardelle

We sat by the window, which was a beautiful view of the harbor. We were surprised at the appetizers, which was very big and inexpensive. Calamari was very tender and not tough. Steak was delicious and our seafood dish was awesome. Will definitely go back! We were able to get reservations at 5:15 PM. The place gets very busy so reserve ahead of time.

IMO McMillan's is the best place to go for fine dining on San Juan Island. We have tried them all multiple times and they seem to be the most consistent with the most consistent service. Every meal I've had there in the last couple years have been worth the money. (and that's saying a lot as it's extremely expensive for working stiffs like us!) Some of our favorite dishes are the salmon, the prime rib, and the seafood Pappardelle. (My person fav!!) The bread is so good It's hard not to fill up on it! I also highly recommend that blue cheese salad, we've been getting it for years and it's just perfect. They also have an extensive wine list but rarely get a bottle as it really adds to the tab. The staffing and service are above and beyond the call of duty! In the winters, they have 20% off for locals on Thursday nights. That's our favorite time to come. Enjoy!

Wow! I'm so glad I came here! Reservations are hard to get but if you come at opening it's pretty easy to get a spot at the bar area! The rack of lamb was my personal favorite but the prime rib was quite good as well! They also have a great wine selection! I love all the Longshadows selections! The wine cellar was beautiful as well! Our server was beyond nice and made the whole experience effortless. The view is beautiful and the food was fantastic! Excited for my next trip out to experience it again!

McMillin's Dining Room was actually amazing. It was so elegant and the service was amazing. The service: Leslie was my group's waitress and she was AMAZING. She was so kind and gave us a few recommendations/instructions to get to a few fun touristy places in San Juan. The food: The food was amazing. It's expensive, but it's worth it because it's high quality. The environment: This restaurant actually has a lot of history, as our waitress explained to us. The restaurant also has quiet classical music playing in the background and a beautiful view of the harbor if you happen to be sitting next to a window. There's a screen to pull over the window as well if the sunlight is too bright. Quite honestly, it was an extremely relaxing environment.

Excellent food. Superb service. Walk-in dining available in the lounge section! I came here for dinner my first night in town as I was enticed by a seafood pappardelle on the menu. I'm so glad I made the trek from town and then through the hotel grounds to find the entrance. It was worth it! The blue cheese salad was a great appetizer, and the seafood pappardelle pasta was absolutely perfect. I can't wait to return. This place was completely full and they only had one bartender making all the drinks for the entire restaurant, but she handled it like a pro. This team worked seamlessly together - great work!

We had a great experience at McMillin's. Nestled on top of Roche Harbor, the restaurant overlooks the water and docked boats. We had the baked scallops as an appetizer, they were delicious. I had the special, the pasta was hand pulled and the scallops were seared well. My partner had the salmon, which was also fantastic. We would recommend!

    Mushroom bruschetta

We got the mushroom bruschetta, blue cheese salad, salmon, and chocolate cake. All were DIVINE, worth going for the ora king salmon specifically. Best salmon I've ever had.

My husband got the NY strip steak, he was equally unimpressed but at least he could eat his food without drinking water to aid in swallowing each bite. The service was kind but awkward. They would stand there and not ask any questions, I had to ask if it was time to order. They shouldn't be charging the prices they are for the quality (or lack thereof). We had originally tried to eat at the gastropub just two doors down, but it was completely packed with a 45-minute to 1-hour wait. Meanwhile, Base Camp had only 2-3 occupied tables out of maybe 10-12, so because we were short on time, we decided to eat here instead. Unfortunately, I wish we had waited or gone somewhere else. Here's what we ordered: - Two alcohol flights -- $16 each - Dungeness crab dip -- $18 - Chicken wings -- $20 - Hot honey apple butter flatbread -- $16 - Garlic butter steak bites -- $20 - Cider-braised pulled pork tacos -- $21 - Mac and cheese -- $18 - Kids' cheeseburger -- $13 Our bill was $176 before tip. After a $25 tip and a 3% credit-card fee that we didn't notice until afterward, we spent a little over $200 for five people -- more than $40 per person, including our 8-year-old. My eyeballs practically popped out of my head when I saw the total. There were definitely some positives. I really like the concept of sourcing ingredients locally, and they even have a map showing where their ingredients come from. Our server was friendly. The chicken wings were really good, the fries with the kids' cheeseburger were also very good, and the cheeseburger itself was probably one of the better things we ordered. But for these prices, I expected considerably more. The $20 garlic butter steak bites were extremely chewy. Some pieces felt like I was chewing forever. The $18 mac and cheese was nothing special and honestly tasted like something I could make better at home. The $18 Dungeness crab dip was a very small appetizer and didn't feel worth the price. And the $21 pulled pork tacos were just two average-sized tacos. The portions in general were surprisingly small. Even when we asked for plates for all the shared food, we were given tiny appetizer-sized plates, maybe six inches across. Trying to actually eat off them without food falling off the sides was awkward. Full-sized plates would have made much more sense. The atmosphere wasn't particularly enjoyable either. The music was louder than I would want for a restaurant, and the speaker system sounded distorted and very bass-heavy. Instead of being pleasant background music, it was distracting and made the dining experience less comfortable. The alternative-style music selection also wasn't to my taste, although obviously that's subjective. A lower volume and clearer sound system would have made the atmosphere much nicer. I don't mind paying premium prices for a genuinely great meal. But this simply did not feel like a $200 meal. We ate at another pub the previous day and spent around $100 for all five of us, and we left much more satisfied. In retrospect, seeing only 2-3 tables occupied here while the gastropub two doors down was completely packed probably should have been our clue. I really wanted to like Base Camp because I appreciate the local-sourcing concept, and the wings were legitimately good. But between the small portions, very high prices, chewy steak bites, mediocre mac and cheese, unpleasant sound system, and $200+ final cost, I can't justify more than two stars. If we're back in Port Angeles, we'll be eating somewhere else.

We initially thought about starting with some small plates, but we were so eager for seafood that we jumped straight into the entrees. We weren't disappointed: Bouillabaisse: This was our first time trying this dish, and it was the highlight for us. It was incredibly flavorful--exactly what we were craving. Spicy Prawn Mac and Cheese: It definitely lived up to its name! It wasn't "blow-your-head-off" hot, but it had a perfect, noticeable kick that really elevated the dish. Blackened Cod Tacos: These were fantastic. The cod was perfectly prepared and worked so well with the rest of the taco ingredients. We also enjoyed a couple of non-alcoholic drinks that hit the spot, though I'll admit that since I'm writing this a couple of weeks later, I forgot to snag photos or the specific names of the drinks! They also have a really nice patio area if you prefer dining outdoors. Whether you're a seafood lover or just looking for a great meal with a view, this place is a must-visit!
