This had an excellent view! The location was very convenient since we were staying at the hotel. Menu is as a bit "old school" in certain ways but very delicious and decadent. Got the chance to visit here during a recent mini-vacation and was treated to a nice dinner. We also managed to snag a table overlooking the harbor and timed it just right to watch both the sunset and the Colors Ceremony. I'll start with the decor, it's a little dated and on the dark side. This is gonna be my one and only real complaint and the one thing nicking that last star. It could use an update, but I'm sure they are trying to maintain that historic vibe. Your mileage may vary. We started off with the Crab Stuffed Scallops and Crispy Calamari. Both are amazing, I'd recommend either one and will look forward to a chance to have these again. I know they are known for their Prime Rib, but I'm not really a prime rib kind of guy, plus I don't get the opportunity to have seafood at home so I settled on the Salmon, served with Potatoes and Broccolini. Amazing dish, very flavorful, perfectly cooked salmon. I got to cap this meal off with a Key Lime Pie. Anyone that has read my reviews knows, if I see Key Lime Pie, I stop right there, you don't even need to read the rest of the menu, I'm not even listening. Now, that doesn't mean that I always enjoy every key lime pie, the bar is pretty high. This was a great key lime pie, perfectly tart, perfectly bold. I'd recommend it to anyone who likes their sweets on the tart side. Let's talk about the staff. Very friendly, very personable, very attentive. Our waiter was amazing, really took the time to understand what we were after, discussed wines with the great at length, went over menu offerings in detail, very excellent service all night. Wonderful!! I'm a Seattle local and I've had my share of fresh salmon my entire life. Had possibly the best salmon of my life at McMillan's tonight. Fresh, soft, not fishy at all! Not the case at SJI Brewery a few days ago. The muchroom en croute appetizer is unbelievably flaky and delicious! We all remember it from last year. Do yourself a favor and order a few of those. Okay, so to start off. Appetizers: They we're die for!!! The crab stuffed scallops were absolutely amazing! If I could I would have ordered 4 plates of these. All the flavors tied in so well together! The Oysters on a half shell so fresh! The crab soup was good too, but it wasn't my favorite. Entree: Now this is the part were I was disappointed. My entree, i ordered the special. The special was a Prawn and Scallops, with some noodles. The meal was pricey, and I was disappointed that the scallops were tough, rubbery texture, the noodles appeared to be reheated. I only ate the prawns. I did tell our waiter with the French accent. He was very kind and attentive, he did say desert was on the house. I declined, I just wanted to get back home since had flown in from the night before. We've eaten here a couple times and every time it's amazing. We always sit in the bar. The bartender was from Reno, and she makes a GREAT martini, with ice crystals floating. This is a good one! For starters we had the Maytag blue cheese salad & oysters Roosevelt. Both were exceptional as well as their olive bread. We shared a thick cut a roasted prime rib McMilan cut with mashed potatoes as a main course. A little more formal than other restaurants on San Juan Island. On our last night on San Juan Island for our last 30th anniversary dinner we found this gem. Only 20 minutes from Friday Harbor, tucked away in Roche Harbor is this great restaurant. Beautiful atmosphere, staff friendly, scenery is nice, and food was wonderful. Oysters were delicious, blue cheese salad was great, however, the charred prime rib and baked potatoe...amazing! This steak melted in our mouths it was one if the best I have had. This was a great ending to our wonderful stay. Props go out to our waiter Jose, he was one very professional hard working employee and he knew his stuff. Especially having to deal with the jerk that sat next to us. This guy was loud, rude to whoever he was sitting with (wife I assume), swore "F" bombs towards her, was belittling, and I know our table wasn't the only ones that could hear it. All I have to say is the waiter, whether he knew it or not how this patron was acting, handled it well. Other than that unexpected entertainment...it was wonderful. The remodeling of the dining room is superb... finally! Now you have AC and nice windows with view of the marina. New wine cellar on the right as you enter. New bathrooms. Well a great place for a nice experience. The food menu is as usual: great selection of meat: the prime rib is a must! Fishes and seafood are always a great choice too. Had the sole and the tomato salad with crab, which were great. However the sole was with a "beurre blanc": it was more butter that a real beurre blanc: emulsion with vinegar and/or wine, and shallots. Disappointing! An evening to spend alone in the islands after a noon hour presentation to local healthcare providers. Staying at the new Quarrymans Complex at Roche Harbor resort. Dining alone always feels odd but I was respectfully managed to a window seat overlooking the harbor and moored vessels. From the start of my dining experience a well polished but genuine personality engaged me in light but relevant dialog. Offering drinks and even being willing to "just surprise me" without fanfare or frivolity. From a simple "non-alcoholic" request developed a fun beverage that was bright but well accompanied the meal. I had the Maytag Blue Salad and learned of the "Maytag brothers." A story you need to look up tot believe. Iowa? Was it? The Evening Special was the Blackened Sockeye with Spaghetti Squash. Simply wonderfully warm and homey in satisfying the hunger and softening the cold looking ripples from the fall breeze on the water. As an ending treat another recommendation was spot on! Cobbler of blackberries and peaches with ice cream. I can't remember a more completely satisfying meal. I can remember many very fine and remarkable meals. This one was just completely right! 3.5 stars. I could not find the place by putting the 4950 Tarte Memorial Drive into the GPS, instead I was lead to a pot hole infested abandoned road near the airport. To get there, just head up the hill towards the Roche Harbor resort and look for the Historic Hotel de Haro and it is across from there and the beautifully designed colored home community. The dining room view is of the harbor's marina and dock. The dining room was virtually empty with little action contributed much to the off peak session. We ordered the lamb shank/winter veggies ($24) and the four course meal ($38). The four course meal started off with a blue cheese salad with chopped egg that tasted crisp and fresh. Scallops baked on a shell were juicy with browned cheesy crust placed on a decorative bed of Rock salt. The lamb shank was a hearty mix of stew with potatoes, onions, carrots and tender lamb chunks. The prime rib entree was not as remarkable as it was not very hot with the edges extremely salty. It was much better with the edges cut off but still did not stimulate. A lack of communication on the part of the staff or incorrect pricing in their system overcharged me about $7 but they fixed that without much hesitation. Total cost with a glass of red wine + tip = $85. read more

Whew okay- have not felt the need to write a bad yelp review in years but had such a bad time I felt implored to write this. First let me say- if you want to feel safe during covid- this is not the place for you. There are many guests and employees not wearing masks or abiding by social distancing. If you're into that - you're in luck! First of all, we made a reservation at the fine dining restaurant and thought that menu would be available to us. It was not- the bar and grill menu was. Additionally it took SO LONG to be greeted, to get water, to get drinks, to get food and to get a check. It was a Monday night? Very confusing. Our server was sweet but our water was constantly empty, and we received one wrong entree. My husbands prime rib was a terrible cut of meat. We ordered dessert which took about 40 minutes to get to us and it was a chocolate cake that tasted like a dessert one would get at Applebee's/ worse than what someone would get at a chain restaurant. The tables surrounding us ALSO had issues with their food. We heard them. The bizarre thing is that a manager NOT ONCE went to any table to ask how things were. Problems aside- at most fine dining restaurants you frequently see a FOH manager hitting tables and seeing how everyone is doing. ESPECIALLY if there is an issue. Truly have not been to such a clearly poorly managed restaurant with a kitchen this terrible in a long time! Congrats! Really regretted not popping into Friday Harbor and getting something there or honestly heating up a frozen meal- it would have saved us a decent chunk of change. read more

Surprisingly good! Given its location I thought this place would just be a tourist trap, but no! The menu was great! Everyone on staff was so kind and welcoming. Our server (Leslie?) was a professional and was able to easily manage all of the different personalities at our table. This is Roche Harbor, if you are in Roche Harbor you have to go to the original bar. It is not going to be a deal, but the place is 100+ years old, people are dressed up, and you can just feel the history in the room. We got there at 3:30pm so sat in the bar, had a couple drinks and appetizers and went on. Nothing too extreme, but I hopefully get the privilege of going back. It is Roche Harbor! We had a rather underwhelming dinner at McMillin's while on San Juan. The view of Roche Harbor was lovely, but the rest of the experience left a lot to be desired. Our server ignored us for at least 10 minutes after we were seated, took our drink order, and then didn't return to take our dinner order for another 20 minutes. We kept trying to catch her attention as she stood by the kitchen, but she was not keeping an eye on her tables. The food itself was fine, but the menu felt a bit like we were dining on a cruise ship in 2001. The best items were the crab bisque (good, but a little one note) and the flat bread appetizer topped with heaps of wild mushrooms and goat cheese. My husband liked his beef tenderloin well enough, but it didn't blow him away. I found my scallops to be overwhelmed by the bacon jam accompaniment, enough so that I left all but one on my plate. We both agreed that the berry crumble we shared was cloyingly sweet. Roche Harbor is definitely worth a look-see, but I recommend sticking to one of the more casual dining spots for breakfast or happy hour instead of McMillin's for dinner. read more

They were able to accommodate us at 8:00 pm on a Tuesday night with reservations made at 4:00 pm that day. There are not many options in Roche Harbor at all. It is a decent looking dining room with a nice view. They have flagpoles at the landing with Canada, BC, Washington State and USA Flag. When the flags are lowered restaurant plays music for each flag, Taps for USA, and a loud bang concludes the event. I could have done without any of that. There were scant vegetarian options on the menu, our server kindly said that they could make something special for my mother with the veggie risotto as a base. I ordered the Prime rib. Server came back and said the only prime rib left was an end cut....no thanks....so I went with the "small plate" "roasted seafood" and filet, with chanterelles and mashed potatoes. We waited for bread for about 20 minutes before I asked another server if she could bring us some. Finally the plates showed up(25 minute wait).... The risotto was about three tablespoons with a bunch of roasted veggies, including beets and broccoli......who does that? Mom was cracking jokes the whole meal. The roasted seafood was pretty good, specifically the stuffed scallop....which is a scallop shell with a rich, cheesy sauce(sort of like a Rockefeller sauce, or a white Mornay sauce with sherry) with crab and scallops....VERY tasty. There was also a couple shrimp, 1/2 small lobster tail and I can't remember what else over a pretty decent spinach risotto. There was also a mustard sauce that was ill advised. The filet was overcooked and charred on the outside....terrible thing to do to a good piece of meat, mashed potatoes were meh. We didn't order dessert.....my wife told me about a decadent pot du creme that they had on the menu previously, but was not available the night we dined there. Our server was going for the big tables, spending a lot of time making sure that they were happy....she gave us some consideration, but not a lot.....and overall, even if I lived on San Juan Island, I would never eat here again....it's simply geared towards the tourist trade, and doesn't take the food seriously. Visiting Roche Harbor was great. The restaurant was excellent as the food and service great. The only reason a 4 was because of price was very high. It is a 4.5 but I rounded up. The service was very good and food excellent. Party of 11 ( without alcohol as someone else paid that) was $950.00. They gave us a special room up on the top floor where we could watch the lowering of the colors. The atmosphere of the restaurant was elegant but old fashion. Excellent one time deal. Big date night during my lovely weekend getaway. This place was the obvious choice, and we were not disappointed. We had a reservation but the place wasn't terribly crowded at 7pm on a Saturday at the beginning of autumn. The restaurant was intimate and fancy with a piano player, who was very good, but also seemed miserable. Did not see a smile on the guy's face, cheer up mate. We were fortunate to be able to see the flag ceremony from the restaurant which was awe-inspiring. Our service wasn't too bad, a bit slow and our server seemed to think she was working for the Feds. She kept leaning in to whisper to us with intensity and deliberateness. It was comical though. The food was pretty good, not fantastic but yummy. My boyfriend ordered from the menu only to be told they don't make that anymore. Oh. Well okay. We were both pleased with the food though. The table next to us got the prime rib. Holy cow! That was a huge hunk of meat. Yikes. Cocktails were pretty strong, and despite the menu claiming you have to try the fuzzy duck, you can skip it. It's nothing to write home about. I'm pretty sure if the restaurant were in seattle I wouldn't have been as impressed but it's Roche harbor and the views are worth the price of the meal. read more

Absolute favorite restaurant on the island. Duck Soup would be a strong contender but their staff are so rude. McMillan's has such a lovely waterfront overlook that's just perfect at sunset. This is where my husband and I had our first date actually, where I take my mom for her birthday, and in general just the best nice dinner out place. Their salmon is SO TENDER (it's the best) but maybe the more surprising favorite is the meatloaf. It's perfectly done and I love it. I don't even like meatloaf but theirs is perfect. I also LOVE their artichoke crab dip. It's the best I've ever had- way better than Downriggers too. Oh and THE KALAMATA BREAD. read more

Been going to Roche for 30+ years, though usually by boat. First time by car to this restaurant. Food was just mediocre for the healthy price, to be expected in a remote place. But the rude staff is not. And then to be insulted by a mandatory 22+% "tip" for our group of 8 was the icing (they had a "tip" and another "service fee"). Never again. Ironically, the breakfast in the cafe by the marina (where we've eaten dozens of times) was a pleasure as usual. Take the short ride to Friday for dinner if you can. Hubby and I were spending the day on Friday Harbor and my FIL said we really must dine here. He was not wrong. We made a last minute reservation and sat at a quiet table at the corner of the restaurant, right next to a painting of Roosevelt's visit back in 1922. Very cool! We were hungry but not starved so the fact that most of the menu now reflects smaller pricing and smaller portion sizes from what you would expect at a 'high end' restaurant - well, it really worked perfectly for our wallets and stomachs. We were able to try a few different dishes (crab cakes, pecan crusted chicken with AMAZING mashed potatoes, maytag blue cheese salad & steak. The fresh, crusty french bread was also a great addition and paired well with our meals. The service was great, happy and helpful to make suggestions. We started our meal just before sunset and once it started it was truly a sight to see. On top of that, each night (at sunset) during the summer the resort makes a big presentation of lowering the flag and this time there were also tapps playing and a cannon shot in memory of those who've lost their lives at War. Very special. It was really a perfect way to end one of the best days with my husband I could remember. I love him and days like this, with time spent together on our little adventures make me realize that even more. read more
