The Islander is everything you want out of a bar & grill in the San Juan's. The people are all friendly and helpful, they've got great deck seating with a view over the marina, and inside there is a tiki bar, pool tables, and a stage for when the sun goes down. Plenty of tv's to watch the Hawks, but honestly, it's just a great place for drinks & food with folks you're up there with. I have been coming up for years, and some faces have changed but much of the staff is the same, always friendly and helpful. There are very few places I'd rather spend a summer day than The Islander in-between fishing runs. read more

The service has been good for me three dozen times I've been back the last two months. Went for taco night early tonight. The order came out way too quickly. Beans were cold, cheese on top looked like plastic. Taco meat (steak) was barely above room temp. No food for me tonight here. Two nights ago the pork chops were great. Th Islander Resort Last night my fiancé's fish was burned and should not have been served but chips were fine! My fish tacos should have been grilled NOT deep fried! The first fish taco was ok but not grilled! The second taco was a fish piece the size of my small hand's little finger burned not grilled! Told waitress she did nothing about it just chuckled! This morning breakfast potatoes were burned!! The mushroom bacon scrambled eggs were good! Stay away from grilled fish n chips and burned potatoes for breakfast! Honestly I would rate my recent visit 4.5 out of 5 stars if possible! It was better than expected, plus a gorgeous view on a beautiful day is hard to beat. I stopped in around 6 on a Sunday, needing something savory after a long, peaceful day in the sun before heading back to the Seattle area. There were not many restaurant options to choose from, but I was more than satisfied with my meal. There appeared to be two sections of the restaurant, the standard indoor dining area, plus the bar section, which I believe has live music sometimes, fun! Oh and there's a deck with lovely views of course. (Make a res in the summer if you can.) There were a handful of tables/bar spots occupied when I arrived, however I was able to snag a small table near the windows. They have a full bar, but I went with a simple glass of rose (~$8.5). It was rose weather after all! There aren't many plant-based options although I was grateful for the Beyond Cheese Burger (~$15.95). The burger comes with a meatless Beyond patty, swiss cheese, lettuce, tomato, onion, and house-made burger sauce, with fries of course! The menu states the burger is served on multi-grain bread, however mine arrived on a normal bun, which I was perfectly fine with. I omitted the cheese and onion, and the burger was still super flavorful. It quite honestly hit the spot! Love the sauce and the crisp shredded lettuce was a nice contrast to the "meaty" patty and soft bun. I could have swapped in mustard and ketchup to make this actually plant-based but the burger sauce was too yum. The amount of fries was quite generous, although they could have been hotter. That's my only minor complaint. I downed them all though, not a problem. The waiter was very friendly and efficient. I had to catch a ferry and was able to enjoy my meal in a timely manner. Don't get me wrong, I love to linger over dinner but this trip was brief. Maybe next time. I'd be happy to dine here again! Would recommend for a casual bite solo, with friends or family. read more

The thing about this island is that, it Has a very low population. It means, places to go to eat is likely limited. It is. What I see on Yelp as far as hours are not always true. Most places are open early evening- -for dinner time. It is remotely quiet and just has its own style of living which, I respect. What I'm trying to say is that , if you plan to stay for a couple of nights? Bring yourselves some healthy filling snacks that will keep you upright until you get some cooked meals that will be available. I know I did since I read about this island. Hub and I realized this was the go-to for locals and have a fair amount of foods. I ordered the quick fried chicken and it was okay. It came with slices of carrots and celery. It was light but satisfying. Service is pretty quick and our server was pleasant. I like that. Hub had the prime rib dip and it came with well seasoned fries. We both enjoyed our late lunch and will probably have a nice drive later again in the afternoon. It's a nice friendly bar I thought. Great shared items and kids loved their burgers! Due to the pandemic, they have a limited menu which I have posted here. We came in by boat for Father's Day and decided to dine in on their balcony. We ordered the pan fried oysters, blue cheese bay shrimp salad and chicken strips! Everything was fantastic...we loved it so much we ended up eating there again the next day and the boys loved there burgers and the adults shared fried chicken wings and crispy onion rings and bay shrimp cocktail. We were staying here across the street at the campground. Went in for dinner had a party of three we ordered appetizers nachos, calamari, and clams. The nachos seem to have been sitting in the window for quite some time asked for extra salsa and we actually got none. The calamari was OK. The clams was maybe 15 One inch clams (maybe) might have been more like 12. Four entrées we had oysters and their Gorgonzola ribeye that didn't have Gorgonzola. I think the rats that were running around the deck got the best service may be the best food. But when you're limited to one restaurant you don't have many choices. The view is awesome. So after that incredible meal we got off the boat and stopped in for lunch, One of us had a Tillamook cheddar burger which was very good. I had a club sandwich a 2 inch piece of bacon. I would give the club sandwich a three out of 10. And the third person in our party had one of those plant burgers and a cup of chowder and he did say the chowder was very good. read more

We came here a couple days ago when we visited the island. We ordered fries and wings and everything came out hot and fresh! They are offering To Go orders and we called in our order before arriving. Run away from this place as fast as you can! The food, service and everything about it stinks... like it smells like straight up ass in there. Gross I ordered the fish n chips which was supposed to be the "best" thing on the menu. It was disgusting! The fries and fish were mushy. When the plate came and I bit into my food I laughed so loud Canada could hear me. The service was poor. The waiter did not know what he was doing.... There was only 4 tables in the whole restaurant and he seemed super stressed out. I asked for a coke and he ignored me. I asked for a coke again 10 minutes later.... Miraculously, a female server shows up out of the blue to ask what I wanted. A coke. Disgruntled by my request she gets the coke... a simple coke with ice but now with attitude. No tip, walked out after paying and this place is beyond pathetic. read more

We visit the Islander by boat on a regular basis. We usually eat at this restaurant at least once per visit. This year (2021) many restaurants are having staffing issues. Apparently unemployment plus COVID benefit checks pays better than actually working... At any rate, your server will be a big part of whether you have a good meal here. We have been lucky at lunch: good service and beer and a burger doesn't test the kitchen or bar too much. We went with friends for dinner, as their prime rib is reputed to be great. Very slow service from a middle-aged guy. We ordered a bottle of wine and he brought it to the table already opened. WTF? I have never had that happen before this. We should have sent it back, but we didn't want to embarrass our friends. There is no way for us to know if he had a hand problem and had another server open the bottle for him, or if they took an empty bottle and poured some box wine into it. The prime rib was very fatty. Veggies were lukewarm. Service was blah. Burgers and beers for lunch + a good server = 4 stars. Prime rib for dinner + a lousy server = 1 star. You do the math. read more

Either, they didn't have enough staff running the floor or lack of kitchen staff, but service could have been better. And when I planned to order for pick up, called the restaurant 3 times but no response. I had to order in person, they made mistake 3 times before they got it right. I ordered 3 bowls of clam chowders and 2 cups of clam chowders. When I picked up the food and brought out to the nearby beach to eat while enjoying the sunset view, all the clam chowders looked like it's all cup size instead bowls. I think I overpaid. read more

Our server, Grace, seemed miffed that several tables were seated in her section; then publicly squabbled with another staff member that intended to relieve her. We had fish tacos. Hands down the worst place to eat on the island. The grocery store deli makes better burgers. They advertise a prime rib sandwich that is just regular roast beef. Skip the ribeye. It's a thin overcooked diner breakfast steak. We expect island prices here of course but it should at least be good. read more

Dinner was incredible and drinks were great with an amazing sunset view. Servers were friendly and didn't rush us out after dinner- we actually moved into the bar for drinks once the sun went down. We had dinner here out on the patio. I got their special the Macadamia Nut Halibut. It was pretty good, but I wasn't blown away by it. The restaurant was nice and casual and there was a very nice view of the harbor. We saw a beautiful sunset from here. read more

I've been to the islander many times over the years and have never had a problem. After reading the other reviews here I almost chose a different place but decided to let my personal experience trump the bad reviews. I looked for any sign of poor service or bad food....and there was none. The service was excellent, the staff was attentive and the waiter even offered us blankets as we were outside and it got chilly. We had the prime rib. All three orders were the same...a nice cut of meat, salads done right, a good baked potato and asparagus done perfectly. I can't imagine how hard it is to find good consistent help in a restaurant on a remote island. Customers are seasonal and so is most of the help I imagine. Give the place a break. read more

I came here for dinner with my husband while here for a short vacation. We sat outside on the deck and the view was wonderful. We ordered drinks which was a mistake . My margarita tasted awful and had a strong weird aftertaste. My husband had a Manhattan which he said wasn't very good. I should have just gotten wine. The food was fairly good and service was good. I would probably go back sometime and just not order mixed drinks. There aren't a lot of dinner options during the week on Lopez. read more

Usually I give a great review but I am disappointed in an employee treat a customer like crap just because another customer says something about the first customer. I watched and when the man and woman came in there were only five other customers and they all had drinks and food. It took the bartender 10 minutes before she acknowledged them. Then she waited for another employee to come in and asked them to wait on them when the bartender had just been out there waiting on the table that had just been next to them. 20 second the 2nd employee took drink orders and turned them in. Took the bartender (employee # 1) another 10 minutes to pull 2 draft beers because she was visiting with customer # 1 who was the one talking about other customers. So it took 20 minutes for the couple to get 2 beers. I have never seen a more blatant abuse of power. Literally there were only 7 people in here and 2 who needed served. read more

A Splash, a lie, and a put-down "A double-Jack on the Rocks". It sounds so simple. When I saw the bartender adding a 3 second water splash (1.5 finger raise in level) to my drink, I asked why. "We always add a splash" he said. No I said. "It was only a couple of teaspoons" he said. "No it wasn't" I said. When the new drink was brought, he recommended that I always add "and no splash. That's the proper way to order" what I want. Gee, at 60 I realized I didn't know how to order a simple drink at all.... So, following that logic, "I'll take a double-Jack and a side of ice. No splash, no coke, no lemon, no lime, no olive, no maraschino, no......." Did I miss anything? On the plus. The coconut shrimp are ok. read more

We went for drinks on the deck and decided to stay for dinner. It was happy hour and my, hubby had the fried oysters, which he stated "were the best he'd ever had" - especially for the happy hour price. The view was perfect through the spotless wind shield/deck rail so we watched boats and Kenmore Air coming and going, as well as kids using the putting green right in front of us. Dinner was excellent, and well priced for a restaurant at the only boat marina on the island, and we had great service and bottle of REASONABLY-PRICED wine. Did I mention how clean this place is? We brought our clubs and tried to get a shuttle to the course which is under 4 miles away and they wanted 40$ for the round trip shuttle. That's highway robbery in my book. This restaurant was very disappointing. We are from nearby so we get the idea that they are "the tourists" Some how they feel justified to charge an automatic gratuity on a table for four . I stopped here with a friend during my whale watching tour from La Connor around 3pm. We only had an hour to eat but it was during non peak hours so it seemed like plenty of time. We filtered off from our not even half filled boat and were all seated in the same area but the tables were somewhat staggered. The waitress took our drink order promptly but didn't even take our food order until we had been seated for over 20 minutes. All other tables on our boat had food except for one other table. She never brought us water or came back to our table until we flagged her down to take our order. Our food was not ready after we waited for about 50 minutes and we flagged the waitress down asking for our food to go as we would have to get back on our boat in 10 minutes. She argued that we didn't want to do that and that she would go see what she could do in the kitchen. She came back and informed us that there were 5 total tickets and she wasn't sure where ours was in that mix. When we asked to be expedited because we had a time crunch, she refused. We again asked if we could have our food to go and she said she didn't want to do that. We asked if there was anything else that could be done or if we could speak to anyone else to resolve this issue but no manager was ever brought over. Our food came out a few minutes later which we ate quickly. We both had the fish and chips which were mediocre. The waitress did not come over to take our checks which we ended up taking to the register and waiting for her to run our cards. The waitress was busy yelling at another waitress saying she was stressed and needed her space. After turning to us, she was all smiles but never offered to comp any portion of the bill due to the slow service or confusion. TL;DR Mediocre food, worst service I have ever had.
