We enjoyed our first walk at this greenway! I got absolutely annihilated by mosquitos so protecting yourself is a must, but the trail was nice. Lots of runners, walkers, bikers, people with their dogs. It was safe and clean with a few trash bins along the way (always appreciated when I have bags of dog waste to throw out!). Parking lot seemed large enough for a Sunday morning. Dogs enjoyed seeing a little frog for the first time in their lives. We will certainly be back! Finding shaded walking trails for the dogs can be difficult and this was nice. The porta potties could be smelled from quite a distance away so I would avoid those. read more

Gorgeous, well-manicured walking path. My pup and I saw two deer and a blue heron. Most of the walk is nicely-shaded and adjacent to water. The trail is busy with bikers, walkers, & dogs. read more

Love the trail. Perfect for walking in the shade with my best friend Lucy. It's always manicured and there are a lot of dog friends to walk with. Mostly walkers, some respectful bikers and some school training for cross country run. Lots of deer sightings. read more

McMullen Creek Greenway - McMullen Creek Trail. - Parks Near Me - Charlotte, North Carolina

We love to hike and often take day trips to the mountains on the weekends. This weekend we didn't have time for that though, so we came here to still get outside. While I wouldn't call it hiking, it's still fun to explore the greenways. We parked at the lot off of Pineville Matthews Road and walked about two miles to the next parking lot (between the two 485 under passes). The trail is very flat and easy. We saw a lot of runners. It would also be a great place to bike. There's a fairly long boardwalk (that was a little slippery after rain and with the leaves on it). This portion passes a couple of marshy areas which are pretty and you can get glimpses of the creek. The fall colors were pretty as well. This is a great outdoor space in the city and we're looking forward to exploring the rest of the greenway and the other greenways in the city. read more

Until now I had only ever rode my bike along the back half of this greenway. I recently took the opportunity to get out to the official parking area here and go for a run from there. The lot is smallish and I imagine it regularly overflows on nicer, warm days. There's a sign showing the map of the greenway and other signs about proper trail etiquette and what not to leave in your car. The trail starts out as dirt/light gravel and continues that way for about 1-1.5 miles. There are distance markers every quarter mile. It's right at 2 miles to the next "parking" area which is tucked in the back of an old neighborhood. If you're more of a trail runner, there's a reasonable shoulder even alongside most of the paved section of the path. There are several offshoots into neighborhoods along the way but it never gets confusing. If you take the path 6 miles one-way you will make it to the Trader Joe's shopping center on Rea Road. Watch out for cyclists and stay alert and to the right unless passing. For the cyclists, this really isn't a place to get your 20+mph road bike training in. Take it from me as I'm also a cyclist. If you're riding here, take it slow and call out any time you're passing someone. A bonus for this greenway is that it didn't seem to smell like so many others often do. I'll be a regular runner here! read more

The greenway trail system is one of Charlotte's greatest assets, and this stretch between McMullen Creek Shopping Center and Piper Glen is the most scenic and diverse of the entire system. It winds along beside creeks, thru Cat Tail laden bogs, in and out of shade and greenery and up and down inclines. Of course, wildlife abounds also. If you are walking, be sure to stay on the right, as bikers also share the greenway. Benches are available. If the sun is out, it will be packed, especially on weekends. Lastly, be sure to lock your car. read more

Love this greenway. From my place I can go to the right, and walking Half an hour, I found: Trader Joe's, Starbucks and a few more. Now, to the left (my favorite) is a bit longer, I mostly ride my bicycle and go to the McMullen Creek shopping center. Please be aware of fool people! They use earphones and can't hear anything. Most of these people walk through the middle of the way!!! The only thing that they can improve here will be restrooms. I know there's one going to the Trader Joe's way. A much needed respite for South East Charlotte. Hard to believe you're still in a major city. Great place to relax, people watch and enjoy nature. Parking can be a bear. . .but they're working on it. One of my favorite spots to go in Ballantyne - Stonecrest area. Safe. Great place for families and to bring a picnic lunch. Get off the couch, turn off the TV and take a walk. You'll thank yourself for visiting the Greenway. DO NOT PARK IN TRADER JOE LOT. read more

I spent so many summer days coming to this greenway for walks. I was first referred here by a friend, then I brought family, extended family, and invited friends again. It is a great way to hang out. I think hanging out at the Movies and Mall are overrated. The whole point of hang out is to catch up on conversations right? How can conversations even be exchanged at a movie theater? You go to the mall for shopping, it is hard to have quality conversation walking around and being interrupted by different distractions. I loved coming here with friends and family because not only can I spend quality time catching up on what I have missed in the lives of loved ones, I can also get in a great exercise. The first mile on this greenway from the Johnston Rd. entrance is paved, the rest are unpaved. We usually walk the 4 mile, I think there is an additional 1.5 mile to go but we stop after we reach the end at the circular seating area. There are so many different types of trees along the greenway. No wild butterfly or birds like the greenway by the university area. However, there there are some wooden bridges over slumps and that is cool to have a change of path to walk on. There are also some small creeks on the side of the road along the way, there is one on your right after the 1 mile mark. I would recommend to always come here with a friend, a couple years ago there were some reported cases happening at this greenway. Just always come before 7PM and bring a friend, don't do anything stupid and you will be fine. I personally witnessed a case of indecency by the creek after the 1 mile mark, other than that had no other problem. This greenway is usually crowded because it is a popular location. read more

I have no idea why I gave this 3 stars... It's a great greenway and probably one of the longest uninterrupted greenway at that. It may be the number of bikers that cause me to give it a 3 star review initially... but if you go early in the morning, you can avoid all the bike traffic. read more

I live here. No really, I do. I try to get out here at least 5 times a week, but poor weather is often a deterrent, since rain tends to leave massive puddles in its wake. Just fire up the iPod and I'm off. Look for me in my orange shorts and power-walker form. A great spot for meeting friends for a quick jaunt after work. Definitely better for your waistline than happy hour, for what it's worth! The bathrooms at the entrance are always in great condition and the water fountain even has a ground-level doggy spout. Gives me the warm fuzzies just thinking about it! Moms walking with strollers, elderly couples who talk about Lawrence Welk like he's their BFF, distance runners keeping time with strange arm movements....they're all here. I sincerely appreciate the cyclists who shout a friendly "on your left" to keep from flattening me while I'm deep into a This American Life podcast. (Yes, I am slightly obsessed with Ira Glass. It could be worse...) Plus, I live half a mile away, so I'm on the greenway before you can say "Baby we were born to run." read more

If you want to take a beautiful walk or run to start or end your day this is it. My dog and I are constantly out on the greenway and we love it. We are always seeing wildlife be it gigantic southern insects, deer, snakes, birds, and rabbits. The only negative thing we (my dog and I) have to say about it is that you need to keep your eyes out for bikers. It's not so bad during the week but on the weekends people with fly past you with out yelling on the left and it can be a scary experience when you're in 'the zone'. read more

As a member of Isabella's Dream Team' I have been running his greenway every Saturday for the last 18 weeks, give or take. I love it. It's well maintained, beautiful, quiet, and a fantastic addition to your weekend. The parking lot off of Pineville Matthews road fills up pretty quickly, but there is extra parking across the street. There is a ton of wild life living here, from deer families to turtles and snakes, so just keep an eye out. I'll second the notes of Sammy J (haha, because don't I always....) and John H - the biker traffic can be a little overwhelming. I hate when they speed past you and don't say anything, it's genuinely terrifying. If you go early enough, those bikers are usually pretty good about shouting a hefty, "on the left!" If you haven't been here yet, definitely take advantage of it!! read more

Absolutely wonderful. Love to go on walks here with my wife. Scenic, calm and filled with beautiful trees and plants. Can get rather crowded on a nice day. If you're a biker, it's a bit of a hassle sometimes. If you're a walker/runner, it can get a little congested with bikers. Quite the double-edged sword. Best to start from Johnston rd if you're not a local. More parking and bathrooms/water. Best since its in the middle of the greenway. Also, parking on 51/Johnston is relatively good as well. Stop 3 on my Tour de Charlotte's nature spots. It was a great pathway for walking or biking. It's under construction right now, but there are detour signs to keep you on track. While I haven't walked from one end to the other, I will one day. I parked in the lot off of Pineville-Matthews Road. I've driven past there many times and didn't realize it was there or what it lead to. It's an easy trail paved, wooden boardwalk, and smooth. There are areas of marsh and probably awfully packed with mosquitoes when it is warmer. If you have a fitbit, you will surely hit your 10,000 steps walking this greenway! read more

The greenway is truly my FAVORITE place! Walk, run, bike or skate ... it is a quiet piece of nature with the convenience of Ballantyne! I run or bike most of the time. I do prefer mid day during he week when there are fewer people but even on a busy Sunday afternoon everyone is very considerate. read more

Amazing greenway that connects with the 4 mile creek greenway so that you can run or bike from highway 51/Mcmullen creek area to Trader Joe's off Rea Road (total of almost 6 miles). The scenery is really unique. I've seen tons of deer, blue and green heron, barred owls, black snakes copper heads, frogs and woodpeckers not to mention lots of shade to make things a little bit cooler on hot and humid days. If you like to run or bike fast be mindful that you might have to dodge some mothers that like to walk next to each other with double wide strollers. And also stay away during flooding since it's on a floodplain. Can be dangerous. read more

Beautiful Greenway and a great escape from City life to enjoy Nature and a nice Hike through the woods either for leisure or exercise. I love going during all four season's but in the summer the best time to go is early morning or late evening to avoid the heat. Charlotte rarely see's Snow but when it snow's here, I highly recommend taking a walk on the Greenway. It is simply amazing. If you love Nature and want to actually "enjoy" exercise, I recommend the Greenway! read more

One of my favorite places to run, a great long run option with 6 miles out and 6 back with bathrooms at mile 2.5 and water fountains at either end. Some lovely wildlife and well kept. Just be warned the water fountains are off in the winter and the porta jons are pretty gross. Would benefit from more bathrooms. read more

This is the best place for uninterrupted running and biking in Charlotte. Even when all three parking lots are full, the greenway can handle everybody out to walk, run, and bike. Seeing nature and wild animals just adds to the pleasantness of the trail. This is a gem in Charlotte, especially if you live in South Charlotte and Ballantyne. read more

I can see the appeal to walkers and road bikers but I hate the fact it's a paved surface. Idk why everyone I obsessed with paving greenways. As a pretty competitive runner paved surfaces are so bad for my joints. Yay being said I give it 3 stars b/c the views are great but the surface sucks. read more
