I would leave a thousand stars if I could for Dr. McNeil. I have a mini pig who became severely dehydrated with the recent heat wave. I drove around for hours with my dying pig and three toddlers calling everywhere from buellton to Culver City. NO ONE would take a mini pig. Dr. McNeil could hear me crying and I heard her tell the receptionist "if she drops him off I can try". Sure enough she got some fluids in him and it stabilized him long enough for me to find someone who actually works with pigs. It took hours for me to find someone and I'm confident that had dr. McNeil not given me a chance he would have died. I am so grateful to her and her willingness to work with an animal she wasn't necessarily comfortable with. She saved his life. read more

I'm extremely disappointed with my experience. I scheduled an appointment to have my bunny neutered and drove an hour to get there, only to be told when I arrived that they had canceled my appointment. The biggest issue is that I was never notified that the appointment had been canceled. If I had been contacted beforehand, I obviously would not have driven an hour just to be turned away. I was then asked if I wanted to reschedule. Honestly, why would I reschedule after this experience? I understand that cancellations can happen, but not notifying a client--especially when they are traveling an hour for an appointment--is extremely frustrating and disrespectful of their time. I would expect much better communication from a veterinary clinic. read more

When I first arrived at this veterinary clinic, every person I encountered was genuinely kind. The women at the front desk were compassionate, communicative, and caring, which immediately put me at ease. I live about 40 minutes away, and I had made the drive because my 20+ year-old Jenday Conure had been breathing a little differently for a few days. Although he was still eating, active, and otherwise behaving normally, any experienced bird owner knows that birds often hide illness until they are critically ill. He had been my companion for over 20 years, and because I know him so well, I wanted the reassurance of having an experienced avian veterinarian simply listen to his chest to make sure nothing serious was developing. I was also worried about the stress of the 40-minute drive. I explained all of this when I arrived, and the staff listened with kindness and understanding. Unfortunately, my experience changed dramatically once I was taken into the exam room. I mentioned that I had sent a video of my bird's breathing the day before. The doctor told me she had not yet watched it, so she went to a computer to view it but had difficulty hearing the audio. I then opened the video on my phone so she could hear it more clearly. After watching it, she did not comment on what she observed. I removed my bird from his carrier, and the doctor took him from me using a towel, which I understand to be standard handling. However, looking back, there was no attempt to allow him to acclimate to the room or settle before the examination began. She immediately turned him onto his back and used a large rubber cake spatula to pry open his beak while her assistant held a light to examine his mouth. My bird struggled intensely throughout this process. When that examination wasn't successful, the doctor reached for a nearby stethoscope, but it became tangled with another one hanging beside it. During all of this, my bird continued struggling. Then, just as she turned back toward him with the stethoscope, she suddenly told her assistant, "Get the oxygen." I looked at my bird and asked in shock, "Is he not breathing?" He wasn't. Within just minutes of entering the exam room, my beloved companion of more than 20 years had died. The doctor attempted to resuscitate him, but I walked outside because I couldn't process what had just happened. I stood outside sobbing. Days later, I am still crying. What makes this especially heartbreaking is that the reason I brought him there--to have his chest listened to--never happened. The doctor never examined his breathing with the stethoscope before beginning what I felt was an unnecessarily stressful physical examination. I live with tremendous guilt for not asking to simply hold him myself while she listened to his chest. He was an elderly bird. In my opinion, the abrupt handling frightened him beyond what he could tolerate. I still don't know whether he was unable to breathe because of the struggle, whether the restraint was too much for him at his age, or whether another medical event occurred. I only know that he spent his final moments struggling in fear. I sought out an avian veterinarian because I believed my older bird would receive experienced, gentle care. Instead, I left with him no longer alive. I cannot say with certainty what caused his death. I can only describe what I witnessed and how it has affected me. In my heart, I believe that allowing him a few moments to acclimate, minimizing the physical struggle, and beginning with the simple examination I had gone in for--listening to his chest--would have been a gentler approach for a 20 plus year-old bird. Throughout his life he had seen veterinarians, been treated for a respiratory infection, and had routine nail and wing trims without ever struggling this way. My heart is broken. My greatest regret is that my faithful companion spent his last moments terrified instead of feeling safe with me. That is something I will carry for the rest of my life. read more

I just adopted a dog and the adoption agency used McNeil vet services. The place is interesting inside but despite that, they missed two stitches in her ear that should have been removed earlier. They also mixed up my brand new leash with someone else's dog and they only told me once I called them. We got my dogs ears fixed and they gave us drops but nowhere on the paper does it say how many or when to give them. The lack of communication is not ideal but my dog seems to be fine so can't place too much blame on them. Just wish it was more professional there. read more

It's taken me months to write this due to the emotions of the completely preventable loss of my 5-year-old dog. For months, I trusted McNeil Vet while my dog became progressively sicker. We spent over $2,000 on steroids, appetite stimulants, allergy medications, and prescription diet changes -- yet he only continued to decline. No real answers. No diagnosis. Just more treatments that did nothing while my dog suffered. One morning he could no longer stand, and we rushed him to an emergency vet. Within minutes the doctor suspected lymphoma simply by feeling his lymph nodes, which were severely swollen. After showing us how obvious they were to check, I was left shocked and devastated that the doctor missed this. He died just two weeks after finally receiving the correct diagnosis. I cannot describe the guilt I carry for trusting the wrong vet and feeling like he would still be here if I had taken him else where. After going to a few vets after his diagnosis I realized how limited education and other opinions are at small vets. As pet owners, we rely on veterinarians to recognize serious warning signs and think beyond routine treatments when an animal is clearly not improving. I write this with an extremely heavy heart and urge anyone reading this to get a second opinion after going to this vet. Our dog deserved better. I will never be back. read more

You can really see how deeply Dawn and Dr. McNeil care about all animals - big and small. My 6 year old leopard gecko began to decline rapidly, and one night his condition became urgent when he started gasping to breathe. Watching him suffer brought me to tears. The office compassionately made room for him to be seen immediately that morning. Dawn is incredibly patient, encouraging, and truly a gecko whisperer. She even rescues geckos in critical condition from pet stores, rehabilitates them, and has kept several as her own pets. She took the time to teach me everything about gecko care and wrote detailed instructions covering healthy feeding, habitat setup, and the exact products to use. I'm so happy to say that with their medicine and care instructions my gecko began improving almost immediately. Now, a little over a month later, he is thriving. Im so grateful for Dawn and Dr. McNeil, they saved my Figgy's life. read more

My experience here has been great. My 1st time in was about a year an and half ago (around June 2024) for my rescue dogs spay. At that point I had been batting an ear inflammation/infection for several months spending over $1000 at the previous vet for ear infection meds. At the spay appointment she told me to try a certain product to see if it helped and if not I can make an appointment to come back for the ear inflammation. That was it... her suggestion worked! Fast forward to early this month (Feb 2026) my dog had a weird growth on her ear flap that she had to have removed. Surgery healed nicely. My dog seems to be comfortable there and she is the type to stray from places she isn't fond of or that scare her. With these experiences that I have had so far, I have my male dog who has lump inside his mouth to go for removal next week. I feel like I found a vets office that doesn't just have money in mind. I feel like they care about the well being of my dogs. read more

I had an appointment this morning at 8:30 for my two dogs. This was the first time going to McNeil Veterinary Services. At 8:45, I asked the girls in the office when my dogs would be seen. They said "when the Dr. gets here" I was told she is often 30-45 minutes late and makes no apologies for this. There is a notice in the office that if the client is late, you will be charged $15.00. I will NEVER use this office again. If the Dr cant get herself to the office before 9am, stop making appointments before that. Its completely unfair to your customers and you have just lost this one. read more

This was a good vet clinic initially. All changed after I was unable to make it to an scheduled appointment. I called trying to explain the reason why I missed it ( it was the day that rained and we had an earthquake and I was not able to secure transportation) it seemed the lady was not willing to hear me out and was adamant I had to pay the 25 dls. Regardless. On top of that, she was very condescending and told me if I missed a third time they had the RIGHT TO FIRE ME.... (although that was my first time not making it to the appointment) I really did not appreciate her tone, and terminology, last time I checked I was not their employee... anyway, I pay the 25 dls and not going back to that place. We had the sad duty to put my 14 year-old Labrador down. The Humane Society recommended Dr. McNeil's services and I can't imagine how it could have been handled any better by Dr. McNeil and her staff. My daughter and I were positively distraught, and everyone was so kind, patient and compassionate. Bailey was 95 pounds so couldn't be put on a platform, so Dr. McNeil got on the floor with Bailey, in spite of some difficulty. She was quiet and soft-spoken around him and ensured his transition was easy and painless. After seeing Dr. McNeil and her staff at work, it's obvious why they were recommended by the Humane Society. Life savors! Such a kind and caring staff. I am not a regular patient nor live in the area, and had an incident with my dog ripping one of his nails out while visiting Ventura. McNeil's was recommended to me by a pet store I just so happened to be next to when this happened. Thank goodness they did. They were able to see me right away and did an amazing job working with my not very patient pup. Not only did they take exceptional care of my dog, but they didn't charge me an arm and a leg like most places would've. Took my dog to an oncologist in Woodland Hills for some diagnostic tests to determine a course of action to battle hemangio sarcoma tumors...one on his elbow that had been removed twice already and a new one on his neck behind his ear. I wanted to find out if it had attacked any organs and if focused radiation, plus chemo was worth doing. $3282 later they released Boulder to me, a shell of the dog I brought in. They had cut, stabbed, aspirated and brutalized him, so much that they couldn't get the bleeding to stop on his neck, but they had not even shaved it, so he basically bled until the hair matted up. Before, he had a marble sized tumor under the skin that didn't bother him...Now it's like a sea urchin is stuck behind his ear. They also sent him home with a massive bandage on his elbow, up into his armpit and shoulder. When I got him home, he was absolutely miserable, so I cut the bandage off. Got it mostly removed, but couldn't get it loose under his arm, where they had savaged him. No way was I going to traumatize him at the other place, so I called around for a local vet. Dr. McNeil welcomed us, even though it was 5 PM. She and her assistant were great and the three of us were able to get the bandage off and get boulder some relief. She spent more time with us than the so called specialist had and charged me $15. When I insisted they take at least 25, her assistant reluctantly put 20 on my card. True personal care, I highly recommend. read more

My baby big girl (83 pound pit/lab) got a small surgery done today and the entire experience from beginning to end was wonderful. I knew she was in good hands. I called in, earlier today, because I needed to get proof of my dog's rabies vaccine. Unfortunately the phone call got disconnected and when I called back I was forced to leave a message. In a panic at about five minutes to close, I called and left another message assuming that everyone had left for the day, since they close at five. I left a message letting them know I was disappointed that I hadn't heard back and decided that this would be the end of my visits to this vet. I received a call from Stephanie at around 6pm, letting me know that they had had a crazy day and would immediately email my proof and she did it with all the class and customer service one would expect from an absolute 5-star establishment.
