Oh man the food here is cheap and good!! I've only had the bbq chicken but it is slammin! I literally can feed a family of four for under $15, you really can't beat that. This is a cash only spot, annoying but worth the visit. They do have a bodega style atm inside if your up for paying those bank fees. read more

Definitely in my top 5 for stick to your ribs kind of food. I love this place. We always get the whole chicken with fries and rice, yes two carbs, but works trust me. The chicken is literally just off the fire and has this subtle spiciness to it, so juicy too. The short ribs are another fav, mostly get this when I'm trying to eat my feelings..hahaha so bad but so good. The wine that they serve you in a cafeteria style glass cup, also a nice surprise. Don't know why this place is so hard to find on yelp but it's the best bbq spot in Newark hands down. I used to walk by this place every morning on the way to work and the smell of the charcoal fire pit would get me hungry. The food I usually order is the half chicken with rice, salad, etc. it's only $5! With a drink! McWhorter BBQ food is usually very good but once in a while I get diarrhea from this place. I don't get sick as much since they raised their prices a little bit. I think they're buying fresher meat now since the price increase. Also, if you order ahead for a pick-up be careful because they'll tell you it'll be ready in 20-30 minutes but really come out in 10 minutes. When you pick it up it's often not warm because of this. Cold French fries are not my thing. read more

I am very disappointed. Their food is way too salty for my taste. I couldn't eat all of the food. They do however give you a lot of food. I had the barbecue chicken with rice and fries. If you don't like salty foods I wouldn't go there. The workers are nice. Oh and you must have cash to pay for the food. read more

This place was a nightmare! The staff hasn't a clue. They were rude! Contradicted each other on the available food. Can't keep track of who came in first when they have too many people waiting in a stuffy little barroom for a table. Tried to sit a party that came in after us, first. We order 1/2 chicken, 1/2 ribs order. With a spit full of chicken & ribs, they told us there was a 45 minute because what we were looking at was for other orders. When I asked the woman what that mean (from the waiter) she tells me that it's one big take-out order on the spit and we have to wait 45 minutes if we want chick/ribs. So we ordered shrimp/garlic which, btw, was terrible. Ate bread/butter and soda/water. (we were 2 & child). All we wanted was 1/2 ribs, 1/2 chicken order. They removed all the meats off the spit and into the kitchen and proceed to fill the spit again. While we eat shrimp the table of 2 attached to us get chicken/ribs. Table next to us gets chicken/ribs. I call the woman over again, she tells me they ordered before you. How would she know? She was at the front of the restaurant when we sat down. The best insult though was when the next table got food. Remember the party I mentioned earlier that almost sat down before us, but arrived after us. Well, they got seated after us and right behind me (I knew because i had to move my chair in for them). They got 2 platters waaayy after we got our shrimp.......yes, CHICKEN/RIBS. At that point I got up and went over to the woman and told her what we witnessed and how poorly we were treated. I asked for the check and made sure she knew I would never step foot in that place again. Whatever she said, it was with indifference to our displeasure. Not once was there an apology. She returned to the table, place the check down and said, I paid your bill. WHAT??? Never has any restaurant, no matter the size, ever been so rude or crude. I said, I'm sure you didn't pay our $11 tab.....it's your screw up....you're write-off. So if you still go to this place, don't feel alone when this happens to you. NO amount of food is that good.........and this food isn't that good in the first place! read more

On the recommendation of this Yelp page, a friend and I wandered over from Rutgers for the 1/2 Chicken, 1/2 Ribs platter. The grilled chicken was some of the best chicken I've ever had. The first leg was like a mind-blowing revelation. Immensely juicy, and with a huge amount of salty, charred flavor without any apparent sauce. I preferred it to the ribs, but my compatriot preferred the ribs. Both were undeniably great. And for 12 bucks, we'll be back. BYOB, but there's a liquor store with a good beer selection and questionable customer service a 2 minute walk away. read more

This is New Jersey at its best. If you aren't from the area, but you are armed with a NAV device, going here for great food won't be a mistake. I've eaten here three times, 3 years apart because I don't live in the area, and each time the food has been just as amazing as the first. And talk about reasonable. I've had a full meal there with 3 and had a bill just over $20. Not many places like it. Newark's Iron Bound is a good blue collar Portuguese neighborhood with some incredible Brazilian and Portuguese food. When you want to try something great and look like you really know how to find a diamond hidden in NJ, this is the place! try chicken with rice and beans. You will love it! read more

This is one of newarks hidden gems. You will mostly find the local first responders there since it is quick and good. Each meal should not run you more than 6 or 7 dollars with a drink. But NONE of them hold a flame to McWhorter. Their pork ribs are always my go-to and have never ever failed me. Also, the very much overlooked fried & breaded bananas are a personal favorite. Chicken, ribs, garlic shrimp, chorizio all excellent. My new favorite is the pork chops. The meat is juicy and tender - good center cut pork chops full of flavor. Rice and beans, french fries, salad - excellent. The prices can't be beat - BYOB and you've hand an excellent meal for very little money. This place is one of Newark's gems! I usually order the half chicken, rice, and fries. When I am with friends, we split a side of beans (to put over the rice). All of the food is seasoned beautifully. The chicken is juicy, tender, and delicious. The rice is always fresh and you get a large helping of it. One of the best things about McWhorter's is that the food is consistent no matter when you order. They get super busy for lunch, but the portion size is always huge and tastes great. read more

Best Portuguese food in the iron bound area. We got the whole chicken platter, beef cubes and beef ribs. The portions were generous and was enough to feed 4 people and plenty to take away. The chicken was so juicy and well seasoned. The beef cubes were cooked to perfection and tasted delicious. We spent 36$+tip for 4 people - can't go wrong for that price.
