We finally found our "furever" animal hospital for our precious Great Pyrenees, Lance, 155 lbs., whom we rescued from a LA kill shelter three years ago. Over the years, we had taken him to six Vets and all were unsatisfactory. As soon as we walked into Meadowbrook, we were warmly greeted by all the girls at the front desk and the smiling faces of the waiting pet parents. Ashley even left the desk to say hello to our boy. The room was spotless, comfortable, no antiseptic smell, no barking dogs, and plenty of room for everyone to spread out. All our fur kids, dogs & cats, got along too! After a short wait, Dr. Amanda walked into the exam room and, upon meeting her, we immediately knew that we had found our Vet for life! She is totally amazing...warm and extremely knowledgeable. We discussed our boy's needs with her and she was totally on board. No extras were pushed on us and they were reasonable for their services. Uh, you mean I cannot go in with her while she is examined? No. I would have to wait in the parking lot. I cancelled my appointment. Would I leave my human child with a pediatrician and wait out in the parking lot, during their examination? Could they limit capacity of people in the office? Could I stand outside the exam room (well over six feet), masked, so I could see what's going on? I would like to discuss concerns with the Vet. How would I do that? I have had 14 beautiful healthy dogs in my life and I have never experienced a hospital that did not know their patients and the owners that went with them. i started going there when and saw the mother mother /daughter team). I started with the mother she was lovely and compassionate. She retired i and we saw her daughter. That was a HUGE MISTAKE. iI bought my one of my dogs in because i actually thought she broke her leg. The doctor says to me and my husband she had cancer . Obviously extremely sad news . The doctor says to me and my husband. " don't you pet your dogs". Can't you see it? I felt like i was punched in the stomach as she was pretty much blaming us for not realizing it. Needless to say unnecessary behaviour as we were just told she had cancer (btw without doing a biopsy). we rushed her to the hospital and the next day we found out she had cancer all over and put her down. Saw the vet the next day with our other dog. She did not ask about our dog who was just sent to the hospital the day before. I told her she died. No im so sorry to hear this nothing. Stone cold face. DISGUSTING in the meantime.......my other dog has had a consistent. problems biting her paw. we had brought her there at least four times. The medicine she gave us was not working. i brought her in again and she refused to even try something else maybe send me for a second opinion considering she could not figure it out. she just kept on saying have her wear a cone. she gets anxious with cones and i asked for another alternative which i was given nothing. my dog died of an infection 2 days later. she was 4 1/2. Yesterday my 18 year old dogs wakes up crying. she cant walk or move could not stand up. i called the vet at opening. explained that i was aware i needed to put her down. she was screaming in pain. the front desk 1st question 1. Are you even a patient here? Who are you? Yes i explained I have 4 dogs. gave me a 3 oclock appt. it was 9 am. I said she is suffering . She did not even try to help me. I have been bringing my dogs here for years but am very disappointed at what they have become. I made an appointment 3 weeks in advance for the first appointment of the day. The vet, whoever it was arrived late. There were people ahead of me. They gave my dog vaccines without my permission. Then I was told I wouldn't be charged for vaccine I didn't want. When I requested the vaccine print out- that vaccine wasn't listed. So I have no idea if my dog received it. I paid almost $300 and never saw or spoke to a vet. My dog isn't young- there were things I wanted to discuss. I had questions- all not answered. I was told I could call the vet and she could refer to her notes. I've been going here since my dog was a newborn. He's 8 now. His nails were getting too long and his nails are dark too so I usually have the hospital trim his nails. During the rise of COVID I was unable to get his nails trimmed due to concerns of the virus. So I asked to bring him in because they were getting so long that my dog would slide around my house when he would walk. I noticed that his nails got jammed and he started bleeding. So I brought him to the animal hospital where I wasn't near being helped at all. I came in at 1:40. They close at 2. This is a quick procedure and no one would help me. I literally explained that he is in pain, and limping as a result of his jammed nails. She dismissed me and said she would set up an appointment 5 days later! I could not wait because my poor dog has been in pain. I called again to let them know that it is an emergency. I would like to know what this hospital counts as an emergency. They have no problem taking my money when it's an "emergency" that makes them Money but a little nail clipping doesn't seem to make them much money. I've been with them for years. I was upset. I explained the situation when I walked in as well. No help so I went to a different animal hospital that completely accommodated my dog last minute. He's fine now and is well taken care of. Meadowbrook animal hospital is funny. Sometimes they can be helpful but if they're not making enough money by offering you help they won't. This is not the first time. In 2012 I came in because my dog was a newborn and I was holding him for too long and he forgot how to walk. They knew that it was that situation. I was 12 at the time. Came in by myself. They told me that I needed so many bogus things. Stupidly I agreed because they told me that my dog would die or have serious problems without it. Even though my dog was healthy and all his vaccines and shots were up to date. My aunt did tell me to stop going to them cause she too was being mistreated but I didn't listen. So I approved all charges. For a total of $285. I was 12! I asked my mom to come and pay for me and she did but it was unfair that they would fine me for ridiculous things especially being a 12 year old. Basically I'm informing everyone that it is better to go to petco in Baldwin and sign up for doggy insurance. They will accommodate your dog every when it's an inconvenience to them. If you are looking for a low cost clinic that offers post surgical meds and antibiotics for your fur babies, DO NOT GO HERE. I thought post surgical meds would be provided as surgery is painful. I was told pain meds are given with the anesthesia. In order to get my cats meds, I was told I had to have my cats seen for an exam for $70 and an additional $30 for pain meds. When I asked for pain meds after the fact, I was told "How much did you pay for your cats. They weren't strays or regular cats. You bought them from a breeder and probably paid a lot for them. If you were so concerned about all of this you should have either asked all these questions before making the appointment or taken them to an animal hospital and paid $500 to have them done." What she basically said was if you care about your cats so much why didn't you take them to the hospital. Well that was my initial plan as I called several hospitals for spaying/neutering my cats and they did not provide those services. They gave me the names of a few low cost clinics. This was one of them. I tried to get my babies pain meds and Heather is the one who said this to me. What a kick in the face! So unprofessional and inhumane. She said they don't provide post surgical meds for the animals which is horrible because my cats have had their eyes tightly closed all day holding onto their pain. They don't care about animals. They only care about money. This place was so expensive because the other low cost clinic in Farmingdale offered pain meds and it was less money. Heather told me that was unheard of. I should have gone to Farmingdale. That was my mistake. Don't make the same mistake I did. read more

I've been bringing my dogs to Dr. Hopkins since 2007. It all started when my 4 month old puppy was lethargic and not eating, after the biopsies came back as parvovirus. He survived and if you look at the mortality rate in puppies that is testament enough to their work. They don't try to push unnecessary procedures and medications, and take their time to answer any questions you may have. A few years ago my friend was devastated when her Cavalier was in pain and had gotten a grim diagnosis elsewhere of spinal nerve damage but to be sure they'd have to do a cat scan $2500. I recommended MAH as a second opinion and after reviewing the X-rays they saw his spine looked fine and perhaps it was muscular from an awkward jump, prescribed an antinflammatory few days later he wasn't in any pain. read more

We used Meadowbrook to treat our 7 year old Yorkie-Poo for Lepto. Unfortunately after a long 3 days over the 4th of July weekend, we were told we had to put him down. We were also not allowed to visit him as the office was closed over the holiday weekend (which is understandable), even though vets/vet techs would be coming in over the weekend to give treatments to the animals. I only hope that the proper care was given to our boy. Unfortunately we had to put him down, as we finally understood what had happened. The reason for the low scored review: A real problem I had with Meadowbrook was with the Vet's general lack of compassion and very blunt prognosis discussions. Seeing as how my girlfriend and I were already in pieces, having a Vet be incredibly blunt when talking about the prognosis did not help the situation. There are certainly better ways to announce bad news. I'm not sure I'll be able to ever take a pet here again after this horrible experience. FWIW - the Vet techs were very nice and seemed to show some genuine care. **Just a sidenote - I feel a few reviews here are just fake fillers to pump up the overall rating of this animal hospital. read more

I just want to update my review from last year. I have been taking my pets to Dr. Hopkins and her staff for a over a year now. I feel legitimately privileged to be able to take my animals to this animal hospital. I usually see Dr. Deborah Hopkins... She is A wonderful vet... She is compassionate, understanding and you can tell she truly cares about the animals. She has been there for me and my animals through so much...I am so thankful to have found her. There have been some times when Dr. Hopkins was not in and I instead saw her daughter, Dr. Amanda Hopkins. She is also an incredibly compassionate and clearly animal loving individual. She was with me when I had to put my sweet old beagle to sleep. She hugged me when I cried and help me to get through such a horrible moment just as her mother had helped me to get through the events leading up to that moment (he had prostate cancer so we were there on and off for a while). I recommend meadowbrook Animal Hospital to everybody I know.... You would be hard-pressed to find another veterinary hospital with such kind and caring individuals. read more

I agree with another person on here that many of these reviews may be fake to boost their business because I have had 2 awful experiences at this vet. I wouldn't recommend them to anyone. After moving to Freeport and adopting 2 kittens I was looking for a local vet and Meadowbrook came recommended by a friend. The first time I took them in every seat in the waiting room was taken; large dogs, small dogs and cats. The problem was that the place has an office cat, Bob, who while very sweet, is allowed to wander freely around the entire office. Bob stole a toy from the cats up for adoption and was running around playing with it, which was making 2 of the large dogs become agitated. The owners were desperately trying to control their dogs but there was nowhere for them to go because the office was so crowded. I was so afraid that one of the dogs would go nuts and hurt another animal. The staff fully saw all of this going on and did nothing to calm the situation. There's a reason why most vets require dogs to be on leashes and cats to be in cages. To allow their own cat to wander freely is dangerous and asking for an animal, or person, to get hurt. The second time I went I brought my cat in because he had a cold that wouldn't go away. I showed the doctor a video of the poor cat sneezing that clearly showed something was wrong with his lungs, anyone that has ever had a cat would know that the sound was not normal. However, she insisted that the cat was fine and it was just a cold and refused to do any tests. She made me feel like a complete idiot for bringing my cat in for a cold. Now, a few weeks later this "cold" still hadn't gone away so I brought the cat back to my old vet who was horrified when he saw the video. One test later and it turns out the poor little guy has 2 bacterial infections and one very serious virus. The virus can be life threatening. He is now on medication for the next 3 weeks and should be ok. But the poor thing could've developed pneumonia or died. I should've listened to my gut and brought him for a second opinion immediately, instead he's been suffering for weeks. I would never trust this vet with any animal, ever again, they show a severe lack of judgement on many levels. Read the negative reviews, these are not minor things. This place puts animals lives in danger. read more

The staff are friendly and professional and always go the extra mile to resolve your pets needs. Beyond their expert pet care, they also work with several local rescue organizations and provide medical care for those animals that do not have owners advocating for their health and well being. I live a good 20 minutes away from their facility, passing by dozens of other veterinarians along the way. I give this place a negative 10 stars for not only there rude ,uncaring, and complete knowledge of proper vet care but for the fact that they literally are to blame for the death of my 8 year old baby girl! From the start it was nothing but cold and nasty attitudes including that of Dr.Osterman and from the other vet Dr. Hopkins. When asked if they were going to x-ray my cat the response was NO and they were going to administer fluids for hydration only..and to leave her under their care overnight. I would do anything that would make my baby girl better...not the case here! Blood was taken and results came back that she had as Dr. Osterman said a slightly elevated WBC count which was sign of infection. She called to tell me that Jolie(my baby) was doing ok and that they were going to treat her with antibiotics and pain meds for her teeth..(never discussed pain meds) and that she was doing great...and that I can come see her tomorrow ...again Jolie was able to walk, urinate, and was not by any means "deathly or very sick"! As I prepared to go visit a call came in at 9am...telling me very bluntly and uncaring "Jolie didn't make it thru the night"! I was beyond consoling that they had no answer as to why???Why did my baby girl pass away??? As I arrived at hospital I was spoken to by Dr.Hopkins who had no idea why and she could only guess as to what happened. She was obnoxious ..rude and incompetent! Her answer was "she was very sick" . If that was true by any means why was I NEVER told by these so called DR'S that there was a even slight chance of her not making it thru the night?? I come to find out that Meadowbrook DOES NOT have 24 hour monitoring of there animals that are sick and on any IV fluids...how can you leave a pet unattended with fluids being administered . I am writing this in the hopes that nobody goes thru this in vain like I have. I did have a second opinion based on the reports from both the lab and Dr. Osterman and thesecond vet said that the cat was dehydrated and needed 24 hour surveillance with fluids and that she was not "very sick at all" Please do me a favor do NOT use these vets ! read more

I cant say enough about Dr. Hopkins. She is amazing, warm, caring and VERY patient. When you love your dog as much as I love mine you tend to be a little nutty and anxious when it comes to the smallest things. I cant say enough about how wonderful and helpful the staff at Meadowbrook animal hospital have been to our dog Max and to our family. Our dog got hit by a car last year and both of the vets here took care of our injured dog and our panicked family and helped us through a tough situation. It wasn't necessarily cheap but Max has completely healed up after multiple visits and months of care. The drs followed up with us and gave us good advice throughout the ordeal. He's now back to being the crazy dog he was before. I would highly recommend Dr. Hopkins and her team. read more

I've been coming to the for years. I've brought all of my pets to them. Over the years they've becomes less compassionate and caring. When my dog passed away I called them and they said to bring her in so I can have her created. I brought her and when I got there I called them to let them know I had arrived. They told me to bring her to the front so I did. I stood in the front with my dead dog for almost 10 minutes before someone came out. Bystanders stared and commented while I stood there with my 90 pound dead pet. Their quality of care has deteriorated. I had another experience with a cat we recently lost. The doctor was so cold and made sure to let me know that without money my cat would not be able to be taken care off. The bill was yes going to be high but you can tell that the doctor really wanted that money. No love for animals. I will be changing vets. For the amount that they charge I need better care, compassion and love for their job. Not everyone there is the same, some are very caring and love what they do.
