Saturday morning. The girl at the cashier spent over five minutes talking to her friend on the side while we stood and waited. She didn't care. Acted as if it were normal to ignore customers. We are the only people waiting for drinks and it's going on 15 minutes more while the young woman making the drink gossips with another friend sitting down and the cashier. Mean Mug Coffeehouse was convenient to my hotel, so my husband and I had breakfast here when we were more pressed for time. It's really beautiful inside with modern decor. It was a busy morning but the service was still pretty quick. I ordered the world famous breakfast biscuit plate and my husband ordered the breakfast plate. The food was delicious but could have been served a little hotter. I love that they offer a Morningstar Farms veggie sausage and even a gluten free bagel option. They have really good coffee. Even though Hamilton Place mall was not open yet when we went here on a Sunday morning, this location of Mean Mug was almost full with customers having breakfast or sipping coffee while scrolling on their laptops. We ordered a couple of their healthy breakfast bowls: the curry sweet potato hash bowl topped with a soft boiled egg and the tofu scramble bowl. Both were excellent. While the serving size is not huge, it was perfect for breakfast and the prices for the bowls, coffee and pastries are all very reasonable. The combination of the sweet potatoes with sauteed kale, red bell peppers, onions and chickpeas was very tasty. The tofu in the tofu scramble was cooked really well -- not spongy, more like a scrambled egg. The horchata steamer is something we hadn't seen in any other coffee shop and it was very good. Even their regular coffee (Mexican in this case) was probably the best coffee I've had in a coffee shop of this kind (sorry Starbucks). Their pastries looked so good and so many people around us were eating them that we decided to end our meal by sharing a blueberry scone. Again, it was one of the top scones I've had in any coffee shop/bakery. The pastry consistency was light and flaky and it was very flavorful. The service here was excellent. Watching the friendly staff work together in both the FoH and BoH/kitchen was like watching busy bees in a well-organized hive. These people aren't mean at all. It was all happy times meeting up with old friends and sipping caffeine at MMC. One positive is easy parking, as you're near Hamilton where lots abound. Quick service as well if that's your need. For us it was lingering and conversing with some iced espressos and cold brew + cream. Since my wife already had her tea quota for the day, she enjoyed the lemon/blueberry cake (warmed of course). Real glasses were a nice touch for those iced drinks as well. There are plenty of spots to get a little work done while you imbibe, and the drink choices abound, along with some sweets and gluten free choices. The breakfast all day choices like keto bowl and paleo breakfast would fill up most eaters, or go lighter with salads or smoked salmon bagel. I could visit many times and not wear out this menu. Mean Mug made sure my mean mug turned upside down every morning... because I am NOT a morning person - so having this location next door to our hotel (the Aloft) was PERFECT. The decor is super cute! Loved the interior and wish I could have stayed to appreciate it. I brought the pup to grab a cup of coffee and a quick bite but dogs are not allowed inside, which is understandable since they do have a kitchen and serve food. We ordered inside and after I took some pics, we sat outside in the outdoor seating area. The nitro latte is SO GOOD! I downed it and had to stop myself from ordering another. I did end up getting a second one the next day though LOL. We had brunch plans but wanted a quick bite first in case there was a wait - the smoked salmon bagel was a pretty and loaded option that I appreciated, especially for the price ($8 in 2022). Mean Mug Coffee House is a good fast casual eatery and coffee shop with 4 locations in the Chattanooga metro area. The Hamilton Place location is tucked away on the outside of the mall, with both indoor and outdoor seating. I read in another review that Chattanooga has an excess of mediocre coffee shops, and I tend to agree. While Mean Mug served up a decent cappuccino and americano, nothing particularly stood out about them. The flourless brownie and strawberry Nutella muffin were ok. A dining companion really liked them, although I wasn't much of a fan of the brownie texture/taste. The place was packed with people grabbing breakfast sandwiches, so I perhaps missed out on the full dining experience? The menu prices for food seemed very fair, and could seriously give a place like Panera a run for their money. Something unique they've done to stimulate mid-day business is adopt a "caffeine happy hour," which is simply genius; it would be great if other coffee shops would adopt this practice. read more

You'll find Mean Mug attached to the Aloft Hotel, right between the Dave & Busters and the Cheesecake Factory. It's on the "back" i75 side of the mall, Friendly service, didn't rush me to order. Jokey and sweet barista. 12oz of whole coffee beans and a fancy seasonal mocha came to about $20, and with the beans purchase they give you a small drip coffee for free. Horrible! Sour coffee. Even with sugar tasted awful. Pay expensive drink then can only drink a few sips before throwing it away. Also got a breakfast biscuit, tasted fine but you can't hold it without it falling apart. They serve it in a basket on paper so when you cut it you have to watch out for eating paper. It was bitter, didn't have the fresh roast smell, and the taste was mild. Definitely not what I was expecting. Also, I found the atmosphere to be hectic and cramped. I've been coming to Mean Mug Coffee House regularly throughout the week to enjoy their great lattes and welcoming atmosphere while I get some work done. Unfortunately, after today's visit I may take a break from coming. I could clearly hear a couple of employees in the back loudly playing, aggressively yelling, and singing, and it was very distracting. I hate to sound like a fun-killer, but many of us come here to work or study (as I see many open laptops around) and it really disrupted the environment. I'm so torn and frustrated with this review because we came here 4 times over our vacation and so many things were wrong but can be fixed. I really wanted to like this place because I love the name and location! What they got right... The staff for the most part seemed nice and helpful. The gluten free breakfast bagel is delicious! So YES that they got right only reason they're getting a 3. BUT What they got wrong really comes down to systems and details. The stains on the furniture and dirty floors is not inviting. Anywhere that serves food should be clean. The coffee was mediocre at best and my matcha the first day was SO bad!!! It had this weird cream colored powdery film on the cup so I was almost wondering if the milk was powdered or had gone bad? Matcha is green so none of us could figure out what happened and why it tasted awful! I have drunk matcha for over 20 years so it's not like I don't know what to expect. Then the wait regardless of how many people in the morning it always took forever, things were wrong, dropped or forgotten. And the way orders were taken, made and or delivered didn't seem in order. I think they just need to do a good cleaning maybe some new cushions and have someone come in to organize and streamline systems for faster more consistent service. This place has a great vibe as the other locations, but way more chill. I like chill. I really can't be productive at the northshore location (Way too loud) and the original is adorable, but too far away. This one has all of the right ingredients of great service, layout, products, decor and general vibe. It's a welcome addition to the Hamilton Place offerings!
