I had spotted this place the day before while walking by. Today we stopped in for lunch. When we walked in the place just smelled amazing. And the porchetta on the cutting board was calling me. We ordered a Porchetta sandwich, meatball sandwich and a side Kale Caesar salad. The Porchetta was great. Chopped and with some crispy pork cracklings on top, it was really very tasty. The mustard on the side was a great addition to every savory bite. Next the meatball. Spicy and delicious with a bit of kale added for texture and color. This was EVEN BETTER than the Porchetta if you can believe it. The kale salad was also good as well as the spicy pickle. I would eat here once a week if I lived close bye. A definite must try if you're in Vancouver. 9/10 read more

On our trip to Vancouver, I searched top sandwiches near me and this spot popped up and I knew I had to try their porchetta sandwich. Being that it was our first time here, one takeaway is to ask for more cracklin' because the crunchy pieces are the best part IMO. We ordered a porchetta sandwich and a grilled cheese. For the price (compared to Cali ) I thought it was a great value for a porchetta sandwich. The bread was fresh, perfectly toasted. The flavors were all tasty, and getting a side of their spicy dip elevated the sandwich even more. 10/10 would eat on the regular if I lived near by. The grilled cheese was alright though in comparison to the porchetta sandwich. Great cheese pull, definitely needs some dipping sauce to elevate it though. Don't know if I'd order again but if a grilled cheese is what you are craving, it'll do just fine. This location had some seating inside and a couple benches outside. Another of my lunch break options near work. Their sandwiches are good, especially love the porchetta with crackling. The buffalo chicken and the meatball sandwiches are ok but not exceptional. I wish they had more options. However, my colleagues sometime order the grilled cheese and the staff sometime forget them. They just grate the burned bits and put the sandwich back on the grill as if nothing. Not the way it should be. Service is not up to par. read more

Porchetta sandwich with crackling on a soft ciabatta roll with some mustard for $14. Nuff said. We look forward to this sandwich everytime we come back to Vancouver. We have not been able to find a comparable porchetta anywhere else. They have loyal customers for life. We got the tomato fennel soup and it was so creamy and warmed up belly and breath in this cold weather. Tender slices of porchetta carved to order, drizzled with salsa verde, and topped with pieces of crunchy crackly pork skin...all sandwiched in between a ciabatta-like bread. YESSSSSSS PLEASE! My coworkers loved their tomato soup, Buffalo chicken sandwich and beef cheesesteak. You know when a place has a limited menu, they do every single item right! Pretty good sandwich chain that we don't have in Toronto! Stopped by to get a late lunch and I loved how simple the menu was. Non of that gourmet, bistro, crisp onions, additional toppings bs - ain't nobody got time fo' that. I went with the porchetta and to be honest, not being a huge fan of pork - I actually liked it a lot! It was filling and the bread was definitely fresher than a lot of these sandwich shops. Lots of avocado in there as well. I was so hungry that I probably blacked out while eating it like a feral animal near the docks after. It was quick and a good meal overall! Not a huge fan of the new tipping culture where you feel obligated due to the machine asking you to tip when you pay and you feel like an asshole if you select 0%. Had to try the porchetta sandwich on my first visit, but only because the Turdunken wasn't on the menu today. Everything about the sandwich was spot on. The bread held the fillings perfectly and was slightly chewy. The meat, sauce, and crisp skin filling was literally a flavor explosion in my mouth. First bite and was trying to figure out when it could get back here this week given their 11am-4pm hours. Also had the mushroom soup, since it was a bit chilly outside today and there were no seats inside. This is one of the best mushroom soups I've ever had. The croutons were hard, floated on top of the soup, and full of garlic flavor. The soup was also garlic and spice laced - almost to the point of being spicy, but without over powering the mushroom. No idea how they pull it off, but it's amazing! What I don't line is sitting outside in the cold and them only being open until 4:00pm! read more

This place sells made to order gourmet boxed lunches, and there is a nice plaza with tables right outside. I had the porchetta and bf had the buffalo chicken. Both were pretty darn good. Only thing I would change is the soda selection. It had gourmet (frou frou) local sodas, but sometime I just want a cold coke. Overall, a very pleasant place to have lunch on a nice day. Spotted Meat & Bread via Yelp & reviews looked amazing & I knew I'd have to try it out! Located on West Pender between Thurlow & Burrard, M & B is located at the bottom of an office building & could easily be missed so use the map finder on Yelp. Ordered today's special - 63 Acres Braised Beef Stroganoff. It was fantasticly delicious! I loved it! Beef was so good & bread, fresh & soft. Peppers, onions, greens & mayo were just awesome! Talked with the manager & he told me the bread they use for their buns is made at a bakery fresh daily. Trust me its that good & goes well with the order I had! The only regret I have about Meat & Bread is that I only ordered one Porchetta sandwich when clearly you could use a second. Sandwiches are among my favorite things to eat and M&B get the Porchetta sandwich right. I went when they just opened up, so I was able to get in and out quickly. We were really looking forward to Meat and Bread after doing some hiking at St. Mark's Summit. Came in, ordered two sandwiches. - porchetta - probably their most well known sandwich, I thought the flavor was okay. The cracklings are a nice touch, but the porchetta itself didn't have those fatty bits and the salsa verde wasn't acidic enough to cut through the meaty flavor. - roast beef - I think this was the daily special. Braised beef, with slaw. Definitely a meatier taste, but I enjoyed the fresh slaw on top. - mushroom soup - Very flavorful, but a little overspiced for my taste. I also thought there was too much bread! The place itself is small and modern, the communal table inside has about 8 stool height seats that don't move, and there's a picnic table outside. After hearing about this place from my husband (who works downtown and has been here several times) I was really excited to try it. Meat and Bread and that it was! When we arrived at the Pender location there was a line, was not surprised because its Friday lunch time. The line up went pretty fast, 10 minutes later I was in front and choosing from 4 different sandwiches. I choose the porchetta, come on now you don't come to "meat and bread" and not have the meat! The sandwich came in a ciabatta bread which I like. The meat was juicy needed a little more flavor maybe salt? But it was still pretty good, my favourite part of it was when you bite into a crispy pork skin, yumm-o! The crispy texture really added to the sandwich. It was very filling, my husband had the "Daily Special" and it was a spicy chicken of some sort ( I forgot.. I tend to not pay attention to other peoples food) but I did have several bites and it was too Delish! Less options than the other (original?) Meat and Bread location on Cambie a few blocks away. Though the concept and food is the same, I feel this location lacks the atmosphere that the Cambie location has - and by contrast this place just feels super bland and boring. It only has one table for people to eat in, and the place is so small it is easy for the line to go out the door, so get there early during lunch rush hour. The food wasn't bad, but (and maybe this is just the atmospheric difference), I didn't enjoy it as much as from the other location. Real talk, friends: their porchetta sandwich and the buffalo chicken sandwich both give me life. Everybody loves a good sammie and Meat & Bread specializes in just that. They have a few regular menu items as well as a feature menu that changes often. The bread they use is the perfect blend of soft and crispy, the fillings are always generous, and the sandwiches are always delicious. Like I mentioned above, I love the porchetta and buffalo chicken sandwiches, but you can't go wrong with the meatball sandwich as well. Really though, you can't go wrong with any of them. This location is smack dab in the heart of downtown Van, so expect it to be busy, most especially during the work rush. No matter how busy it is, the wait has never been longer than 15 minutes to get in, order, and get out. There aren't a lot of tables inside, so I've always loved grabbing my sandwiches to go. Came by yesterday for a take-out lunch around 12:45. Meat + Bread is just a few blocks away from my work near Burrard on Pender. This was my second visit to this location and at the time they had a few people ahead of me. I was greeted as I walked in and my questions were promptly answered by the staff member closest to the door, who also took my order. I must say, their process is like clockwork. From taking the order to food prep to the cashier station, it's amazing to watch them in action. This time I ordered their special of the day - a roasted turkey sandwich with spinach, some mayo and a few other ingredients. The pricetag - just a hair under $10. Walking back to the office, I was struck with how cute their to-go box is. It's the perfect size for their sandwiches. That said, the sandwich is small. I found a good amount of meat in the sandwich, but that considered, I still would not call this a filling meal. I know they use good quality ingredients, and I give them props for really tasty bread that is not too heavy. But for $10, even downtown, I expected more - a small side-salad would do the trick. I'm not even sure the special was six inches in length. I found the special tasty, but not mind-blowing. Perhaps I'm setting the standard too high, but when I think of other sandwich places(albeit not direct competitors to M+B - Quiznos & Mr. Sub for instance), you can get much more for your buck. It's almost the Cartem's donuterie argument here - if you're charging twice as much(or more) for your product, it better be that good. I will mention in all fairness that I am NOT allowed to eat pork, so that might colour my opinion of this restaurant. It only took me several years before I came here, long after the opening of the original Meat and Bread in Gastown. I thought I would be excited to try the much lauded porchetta sandwich. However, the more I read about it, the more I hesitated and the decision was to stay away from it. Why? Because it looks like Chinese roast pork on bread. Seasoned differently but much the same. Conversations with other Asian Yelpers confirmed it. Chinese roast pork on bread. One sunny day, Kenneth N and I decided to come here. Let's give it a shot. Corned beef with Sambal Gherkin Mayo, Pickled Cabbage, Dijon. As far away from roast pork as possible. The corned beef was good. I'd say very good with the way that it was dressed. Meat and bread is always a good idea. I've always dropped by this location whenever I'm in downtown on weekdays when they're open and I could honestly say that I haven't had a bad experience so far. However, my husband has encountered their off days where the bread was cold and chewy and the meat was bland and dry. It still hasn't stopped ne from going though. In my case, I always order my go-to sandwich which is the porchetta with mustard and extra salsa verde. This has never failed to make me full and very satisfied when I need my dose of pork and crispy skin. The salsa verde goes really well with the porchetta and their homemade mustard makes everything great! Lunch rush happens since it's in the heart of the business district but don't let the line scare you, it moves quickly and the staff at Meat and Bread work like a well oiled machine. Came here to see what the hype was all about, now that the lineup has finally died down a bit. Parking isn't too available here, unless you feel like throwing money away at the City. The shop definite looks trendy, with the precast panels and the HVAC piping clearly visible. Pretty interesting when you consider that this would've had the opposite effect a few decades ago. The large glass panels are definitely cool-looking though. For seating, there are 8 seats inside (1 long table), and 2 picnic benches outside. The simplicity is quite nice. On one side is a guy hacking up meat, while there's another guy managing a stack of buns. Farther down the assembly line, there's the checkout girl and 1 other staff. They only make 4 types of sandwiches ($7-9) too, so it's not too hard to clean out this place. Oh, they also have soup ($4). Feeling like a baller, I had the daily special ($9). Mole pulled pork (how's that different from non-mole-pulled pork?), pickled fennel, witlof (what's that?), and parsley cilantro aioli. Before picking it up, this is where my first/only complaint is. whatever they put in there makes the sandwich leak. My box was dripping by the time I picked it up. If you're the owner, please try to adjust the recipe accordingly. The box was cute looking though. As for the taste? Pretty freaking good. The ingredients were very fresh, with the right balance and kick. I'm drooling just thinking about this thing. Oh yes. This place is absolutely amazing. They literally offer only like 5 types of sandwiches (one of which is a daily) but they're all, so, damn, good. I don't usually even like sandwiches but the bread is fresh, meat delicious and the flavors and textures are just SO on point. We got a corner beef and a porchetta, both were sooooo good. I'd been dying to try this place during the work week but it was always too far for me. The stars finally aligned when I ended up in this area during lunch time. It was just after 1:00 and there was a line just out the door. The wait was short. All the staff behind the counter work very efficiently. I ordered the Porchetta as that seems to be the most popular choice. I stay in line until I get to the cashier, and at that point I am given my sandwich in a box and I pay. It's like a factory line. Definitely a good lunch spot for the working crowd. But for a regular customer it may seem slightly rushed. With sandwich in hand, I head outside to find a seat in the sun. I was so excited to finally try this famous sandwich, but to my disappointment, the sandwich lacked sauce and the meat was dry. The meat was salty and on the tough side. There were some crunchy bits of pig skin which were delightful but not enough to redeem the sandwich for me. The pork reminds me of Chinese roast pork ("siu yook"), but the hard pieces that are usually left at the end. Also, the sandwich was literally Meat and bread. No veggies. No frills. I only took a few bites of the sandwich before I decided to pack up and head back to my office, where I keep a bottle of hot sauce. Once I got my hands on that hot sauce, I went ham with it on the sandwich and ate the rest. It was better with more sauce, but I likely won't be back for the Porchetta. I may give other sandwiches a try... though I won't be in a rush to come back anytime soon sadly. read more

I was extremely excited to try this place and unfortunately I could have waited. When I arrived there was a line out the door but it moved rather quickly. It was 1pm so a little after lunch hour and to no surprise the special sandwich of the day was sold out. I kindly asked the worker what sandwich was the best and she advised the porchetta was the most popular. They also had buffalo chicken and corned beef. Please note the line is sort of like a subway but the sandwiches come as is so no adding extra something here or there. My sandwich came in a cute little white box and the ordering and paying was extremely efficient. There are little high top table and chairs for you to eat as well as outdoor seating. It was a bit chilly outside so I decided to take it home to enjoy. Sadly, the pork lacked flavor even with salsa verde sauce on it. The pork and bread was also extremely dry. I attempted to enhance the flavor by putting some cheese and hot sauce on it but you can't put lipstick on a pig and expect it to change. On a brighter note, the service and employees were nice and seemed to enjoy what they do. All in all, I wouldn't recommend this place and would not return. read more

The ciabatta was perfectly warmed, giving a soft texture with a hint of crunch from the crust. The porchetta was amazingly tender, not overly salted or too fatty, and incredibly flavorful. The cracklings add the perfect texture to bring this experience up one notch. The only reason to take away a star would be their horrible punctuation (see picture of the menu)! But, since this is a review about food and customer service, I digress! In all seriousness, though, Meat and Bread is a top notch, 5 star sandwich place in the heart of downtown Vancouver.
