Meat & Company first and foremost takes me back to the Yelp Elite event which was so memorable for so many reasons. Yes, the food was delicious and plentiful, but connecting with Yelpers was one of the biggest highlights of that event. So, I know it's taken us long enough to come back but it was truly better late than never because they did not disappoint. It was within an hour of closing but the place was buzzing both with folks dining in and a constant stream of orders from online and in store. We settled on their brisket sando and three sides - pit beans, mac & cheese, potato salad. The brisket was tender and juicy, potato salad wholesome and egg-y, pit beans sweet and spicy, and m&c mac & cheesy. While they don't have French fries, they have homemade kettle chips which I'm generally not enthused about but the ones here had a softer finish and I rather enjoyed them. Oh, and an honourable mention is due to the comfy chairs which are extremely hard to come by in restaurants. One minor (but non-negligible) gripe was the rather long wait before we could place our orders because the staff right in front of us insisted on packing a big online order AND serving the folks picking them up drinks before we could put our orders in. I personally would have taken the order of someone in line especially since there was no one behind us, so that the kitchen staff can start filling our orders while the staff at the register can return to finishing packing the pickup order. My wife brought me here as a surprise night out, and we had a good time. The Good: - very tasty barbecue that they cook/smoke/roast on site. I had the brisket, the pulled pork, the baked beans, and the mac & cheese. The brisket was perfect and served with sauce on the side. Lots of great spices, tons of flavorful smoke, not too mushy, not too fatty. - The beans were phenomenal with tons of flavorful pork bits inside. I wish I could make them that good at home, but I don't access to the BBQ scraps that they have. The mac and cheese was dense and creamy, and the pasta was not at all overcooked. I really appreciated this. The Bad: - seating is limited, and it is quite likely during a busy time you will get your food before a table is open. Why do they limit the number of tables they have when there is space for more? That doesn't make sense. - the pulled pork was just meh. It tasted flat, the texture was pure mush, and the color was a bit odd. Frankly, I make it better at home. This reminded me of crockpot pulled pork with a bit more smoke flavor. It too was served sauce on the side. - when our food was served it was covered with complimentary red pickled onions. Yuck! Apparently they sometimes ask in advance but they might forget when busy. Thankfully, since they didn't ask and made the wrong assumption they were willing to remake my plate without onions. - no cheap drinks. No cheap anything really. Imported soda, exotic Fiji brand water, etc. Their prices are very high for some things. They make great food, but you might get hit with $25/person or more before the smoke settles. Was it worth it? For some stuff yes, and for other things no. We had a good time, and I know better what to focus my order on in the future. But to go at dinner time when there might not be a table to enjoy your food is a real bummer. read more

In town for work for just one night and my favorite food is wings. So after a bit of research I found this place and had high hopes... and I'm absolutely glad I did, it was incredible!! I ordered carryout and got a full order of smoked wings with buffalo(which is 12 and greatly appreciated, I think that's the perfect amount for a "full" order) which were incredibly (9/10). It's incredibly filling but delicious. The cornbread was moist and flavorful, I assume it would also reheat very well but it didn't last that long. I stopped in on a weekend afternoon and was warmly greeted by the cashier. My fiance and I decided to share a two meat platter. We chose brisket and pulled pork, which came with two sides so we opted for potato salad and mac and cheese. Everything was absolutely delicious! My husband and I came here for dinner on a Friday. A steady flow of customers coming in and out, including people who were dining in. As you can see, there aren't that many tables and some people (including us at first) were waiting for a table to sit at. They have a lovely area with a couch and comfy chairs but who wants to eat messy BBQ that way? Even though we told the cashier that we wanted to eat in, our order was put in the warming area and people around us continued to receive their food, when we did not. Finally after about 20 mins, I went and asked where our order was. My husband enjoyed his pulled pork sandwich. However, my ribs were tough and chewy. Plus, the BBQ sauce that came with it was not my cup of tea (too vinegary but I know everyone's taste buds are different!) Lastly, the cornbread. I had such high hopes but alas, it was quite a disappointment. The cornbread had more of a gluey cake consistency and I have no idea what is smeared on the top of it but it literally added nothing to the dish. My husband got the two meat platter, he chose pulled pork and turkey with the pit beans and potato salad. Everything was fantastic. I hate to say the brisket melted in my mouth because that phrase is so overused but it's true. I tried some of the turkey and I would eat more turkey if it always tasted so good. I will give a warning about the pit beans. My husband has a much bigger tolerance for spice than I do. He said they were hot. This was my first time back to Meat & Company since our Yelp event a few months ago, which has been one of my favorite Yelp events ever. I was pleased to see everything was just as tasty and well prepared as it had been that first time. This time it was take-out, which takes a few minutes to prepare, but you can see them setting up at every step. My favorite foods there continue to be their ribs and smoked turkey, and the kimchi slaw and beans as sides. I like that the sides are just different enough from similar sides at other local BBQs to be unique. I'd love to see collards become available in the future. There's just so many good options here, plus combo platters on Saturday. If you want a lot of options, consider the family combo if you have enough people for it. It's about a 20 to 25 minute drive for me to bring take-out home, but the foods are well packed and stay warm even for that amount of time... which is good, because I'd certainly be up for more take-out more often. read more

So this is going to be a startling review -- a five star review of a place called Meat & Company by some vegetarians. We went the first time because it was one of those days, and our non-vegetarian kid was desperate to eat and we were in the neighborhood. So while he chowed down on the pork sandwich platter (which was, he reported, excellent, and I can tell you the aroma made my mouth water), we split one of each non-meat side available. Chips, Potato Salad, Mac and Cheese, the Japanese eggplant, and the Kimchi Coleslaw. (I think we passed on the beans because they had pork in them.) They were FABULOUS! I mean, I've had plenty of BBQ sides in my time, back when we were carnivores, and I've tried them all. I can think of maybe two or three others that were the equals here, but for a limited run of options, it was non-pareil. The owner came out to check how things were a couple times, which we found to be a nice touch - so many owners/ managers really don't want to know. I got the smoked wings with garlic parm sauce, which wound up being a little too cloying - delicious but too rich, especially paired with the blue cheese dressing. We asked the owner about the ranch that also came with the wings because it was very light flavored, I could barely taste the seasoning, but I commented that it would pair well with the buffalo sauce, which is how I'll order my wings next time... When we were getting ready to leave he asked if I'd like a dish of buffalo sauce to go with my leftovers. Super unexpected and appreciated! My husband got the 2 meat combo - pulled pork and chicken with pit beans and Mac and cheese . The smoke on the meat was light, not overpowering. Meat & Company is located at the outdoor mall in Niskayuna, which is an affluent suburb of Schenectady...just don't ask about the increase in their utility bills. The restaurant is clean with tables of 2 or 4 surrounding a kitchen and ordering counter. There's a smoker in the back, too. One thing I didn't realize until I went in on a Saturday is their menu is strictly BBQ based on that day. I was going to get the Japanese eggplant sandwich. Yeah, the restaurant's name is Meat & Company, and all of their sandwiches contain meat except the eggplant sando but...I'd heard good things. Since that wasn't available, I opted for the brisket sandwich, to-go. I opened the to-go carton when I got home. At first glance, I was a bit disappointed because I paid $22 for a sandwich and a side (kimchi coleslaw). I thought the sandwich was going to be bigger. It was a regular hard roll or Hawaiian roll with a mound of sliced brisket topped with a bit of BBQ sauce and pickled onions. As I looked at it, I noticed that the bun was practically overflowing with meat...OK, my initial perception was off but I was still a bit skeptical. When I took a bite, the rules changed. The brisket was really good; smoky, tender...time and attention went into this thing. I think it also threw a switch in the reptilian portion of my brain. I started inhaling that sandwich and if someone made a move towards me or my food at that moment, I would have defended, like a lioness at a kill. When all the protein seemed to be getting a bit heavy, the sweet tang of the BBQ sauce or the bright acidity of the pickled onions provided a welcome compliment. I think I still got the meat sweats. Kettle style chips were provided with the sandwich. I actually haven't touched the kimchi coleslaw yet; still in recovery. I first visited Meat and Company as part of a Yelp Elite event. Two days later, I was still thinking about the amazing food I'd gotten to try and had to drive back here. This review is based on the food I purchased at that visit, though let me just say-- every single item I tried at the event was incredible. There wasn't a single item that was even average. This visit, I had to get a full size of the Cubano sandwich I'd sampled at the event. Now, I like a variety of meat but usually if there are other options, I'd pick beef, turkey, or chicken over pork. But this sandwich was so delicious, it was what I'd been craving. The meat was so tender and flavorful- you can tell the meats are cooked properly and taste so high quality. The hit of acidity from the mustard and pickles plus the gooey cheese gave this sandwich just the right balance for me. I've actually never tried this sandwich anywhere else (though I know it's popular, it just never looked or sounded great to me because I don't love deli cold cut type ham). I'd encourage you to try this if you love a great sandwich. I also got a pastrami to take home for the next day. They only serve this on Thursdays. This was honestly unlike any pastrami I've tried before. It had that smoky flavor like you get on a BBQ brisket but with the spices and flavor you'd expect. I've eaten at some of the famous NYC Jewish delis and had some wonderful pastrami in the Amish country of PA but this was next level. The mustard seeds and the tenderness of the meat ... just yes. If you aren't into meat, the Mac and cheese is thick and gooey comfort food. My mom is extremely picky about potato salad and usually won't eat it out -because her own is so good -and she loved theirs enough after trying it at the event to get a container when we went back. They also have a Japanese eggplant sandwich with their own kimchee coleslaw. I didn't sample this at the event because I'm allergic to eggplant but my mom, who is not very adventurous with new foods, said it was really tasty. They have a frozen hot chocolate with a toasted marshmallow on top and if you are looking for a great IG photo and something sweet after your meal, it would be perfect. I love the modern vibe of this little place. It is extremely clean inside and is great for eating in or grabbing some food to go. It's tucked in a plaza near Market 32 so you might not notice it if you are just driving around the area. The staff was friendly and hardworking. The owner is super personable and remembered me from the event. I love that this is a family owned business. You can really taste the care that goes into the food. The owner is knowledgeable and understands how to cook a variety of meats to bring out the flavor and make them tender. The sandwiches offer ingredient combos that really highlight the different proteins. I've already recommended this spot to several friends. Now, I need to plan another visit to try some of the Saturday BBQ and I saw mini donuts on the menu that I think I need. read more
