Stopped by on Father's Day Sunday looking for Grouper. I not only got the freshest looking grouper…read moreI've ever had but also an education as to why the owner Emanuel prefers the red grouper over all the others. This man knows his fish and I get the feeling he would be horrified if he ever sold something he wouldn't love himself! Emanuel was happy to cut a 2 pound fillet off a much larger fish and took great pains to remove every pin bone. It was literally a perfect piece of fish from a great little shop where everyone I saw was happy and smiling. Made me want to visit Haiti. I think that is where the owner and his friendly coworker Debbie are from. The store has some other items to round out a meal so it might be a one stop shop for dinner. We, of course, forgot a couple things so we stopped at The Fresh Market on our way home. Just to see the difference I checked out the fish counter. The store might look real snazzy but the fish didn't look nearly as good and was several dollars a pound more expensive. I also doubt the people serving it up have half the passion for their products. Emanuel told us he can get any type of fish we want to order overnight and even gave me his card with his cell phone number. We are new to the area but have already found the perfect fishmonger. Keep it up Emanuel. We will see you soon!

Went there and was highly disappointed. I have been there twice before to make char grilled…read moreoysters. This time was a completely different. The wife doesn't know anything and when I say anything I mean anything. I went there for my usual half shell oysters. She was explains the price and the last time I went the husband said shucking them is on him and this time I went it was 1.99 plus 10 to shuck (never an issue to pay that because I pay for what I like). I kept having to explain the I wanted it half shell and not completely unshucked. Some man came in and she took is complete order and left me waiting for another 10 mins. Once he was done she finally came back to me and continued shucking the oysters. After 5 mins my Aunt came to check on me because I have in there for a while. My aunt noticed how she was shucking the oysters AND SHE WAS COMPLETELY TAKING THE MEAT OUT OF THE SHELL. Like she took the meat out of the shell and threw both shells away. The husband has never once done that to me. I will never come back here when the wife is there if that is even his wife. She quite literally doesn't know her own product or even the different kind of ways to shuck oysters. HIGHLY DISAPPOINTED!!!!!!

I love going to ethnic markets as they contain so many unique and interesting foods and spices…read more Maybe not so unique or interesting to those of the particular ethnicity they serve, but to me, they open up a whole new culinary world of culture, tastes and flavors. I stopped by Oakland Park Meat & Fish Market, Inc. which also has a sign on the front reversing the "Meat & Fish" around saying Oakland Park Fish & Meat Market, so before entering I sort of knew that they really didn't have their act fully together and upon going into the store, that point proved itself to be true. The market, which I think was formerly a meat market that went by the name of Cattleman's Meat, is really small with various shelf items literally stacked as high as possible, a produce section and a meat and fish section. Overall it's a rather disorganized looking mess of place with buckets here, old towels over there, and a general hodgepodge of disorder. The cuts of meat didn't look all that good, the eyes of the fish somewhat milky and appealing. The produce section didn't really contain anything that I noted as uniquely special or out of the ordinary ethnic and the can goods, sauces and spices nothing I couldn't for the most part find at a nearby Publix. The checkout clerk, an elderly gentleman was more than friendly but the rather seedy appearance of the place plus the fact of not finding any unique spice variety of galangal, chili powders, tamarind, file or possibly one that I had never heard of or experienced before, prompted me to leave without having made any purchases. However, I did find the prices for what they did offer considerably less than might be found in one of the larger chain grocery markets, as fact which must be their key point.

I want to note this is NOT the old Cattleman's that used to be at this address. I went there…read morelooking for something specific meat-wise; the STENCH in the place smelled like a horse died and they hadn't sold off all the body parts yet. Flies everywhere. Crap everywhere. I wanted to take a shower before I got back in my car after being inside the store for about a minute. There was a lot of produce, and meats, some fish.. but I wasn't there long enough to get a real good look at any of it. Maybe this place appeals to someone but not me. If you're looking for a good meat market try Guido's in Pompano.
