Came here with family for a Friday night dinner. This is a cozy place. Only about 6 or 8 tables. The bar was very busy as well. We were greeted by the server & we sat down. It had been raining so hubby & I decided to order the French Onion Soup. Very delicious. The chef came out & asked how we liked his soup. We told him it was yummy! He then told us there was a lot of wine in the soup! I responded- now I know why I enjoyed it so much! My daughter got the chicken & sliders combo. She said it was very good. Hubby & I ordered the 10 Oz rib eye steak. Very tender & delicious. He got fries. I asked for the roasted broccoli. It was a bit Al dente- I would have preferred steamed or in garlic & oil. Awful experience. We've been waiting to come here and decided to go because of the good reviews. Well what a disappointment! We got the waygu sliders that came with wings. They both had such a weird taste. Like chemically. The texture of the meat was also strange in the sliders. Now to the horrible part. We also ordered the burnt ends Mac ans cheese and the waygu burger. Please see photo of the Mac and cheese. It was horrific. They did some weird steak and sauce thing on the side of Mac and cheese. The sauce was like a spicy teriyaki type of thing. Really bad. Ans the steak was like a car tire. This place has been on my go to list for a while, and finally on Friday night, my husband and I decided to eat dinner here before walking over to Funky Buddha. It's a small restaurant with a large U shaped bar. There's a seating area outside as well. We went a little for early dinner around 5:15pm. Whiles the tables were all empty, the bar had several people sitting at it. We were greeted right away, and both the bartender/server and chef/owner (maybe?) were friendly and helpful. We each got a glass of wine and ordered the French onion soup for an appetizer by recommendation. The soup was beyond amazing. It had a nice touch of sweetness too it and was not salty like some French onion soups can be. The bread in it still had a good crunch to it. The chef came by and explained how he made the soup. For meals, my husband got the bison burger, which he loved. It came with broccoli that was super crisp. I got the burnt ends mac and cheese. Yes, another 5 star in Oakland Park's culinary district! Three of us had dinner at The Butcher's Barrel. It is a combo butcher shop (although I did not see meat displayed any where) restaurant, bar and wine tasting room. It's been open for several years now. They open at 5 pm. We arrived at 5 as the first patrons. By the time we left, at 6:30 the place was full. They have a steady and faithful clientele. The bartender was also the butcher. He told us the flat iron steak was the special that night. It was 8 ounces sliced nicely with grilled onions and a chimichurri sauce on top. It came with French fries. We ordered 3 of them, medium rare (although I'd say they came medium well). Very tender and the chimichurri was absolutely delicious. A very good entree for $30. We also ordered roasted broccoli and blackened brussel sprouts. The sides were large enough for 3 of us. They were excellent. We had draft beers from local breweries. Although we did not order wine, we inquired about the selection. They had some very good wine country bottles from vineyards we have visited. The bottle prices were reasonable - a popular red blend for $35 and more fancy Cabernets for $80. No gouging here! In the future, they are looking to host a beef and wine tasting with samples of the proper beef cuts for each wine. Sounds interesting! Overall, we had a delightful experience and I will definitely be back. read more

First clue, no customers except us and one other table of 2. Some guy sitting out front like a DJ but no one is there. It was nice relaxing music for dinner. The chef is the waitress also. Very friendly and talked to us a lot. It's a big menu but it seems that they really don't have all that stuff. We tried ordering the mussels as an appetizer, they came back with they didn't have enough, have the meatballs instead. Ok, we did. They were Bison and were heavily seasoned and spiced but they did taste good. They did not look home made as they were so perfectly round. I ordered a ribeye steak and my friend wanted scallops, which again they did not have, she recommended a garlic shrimp dish. My steak was about 3/8" thick. It was cooked medium like I asked. Very salty but I ate it. Not what I would expect for a steak from a place calling themselves the Butcher's Barrel. No good steak is going to be that thin. The garlic shrimp dish was a ridiculous mix of things on a place. The shrimp were simply sauteed in a skillet with some garlic and a few other things, potato salad, rice and peas, veg, kind of a big mess of things which did not go together. You can pick your sides so maybe a bad selection. For the price it looked terrible. When we went to pay the credit card processing system was not working. They have a sign which says it might not work! What??? Fix it! Instead they gave us a phone number to Zelle the funds. That worked but this is very strange. It seems they might be in transition from one owner to a new one. The place is nice and the other places near there weren't busy either so maybe all the tourist have gone. My wife and I had the absolute pleasure of dining at Butcher Barrel tonight, and I can honestly say this was one of the best dining experiences we've had in a long time! From the moment we walked in, Ryan made us feel right at home. His warm and welcoming personality was the perfect start to our evening. He took the time to walk us through the menu, and his and all of his recommendations were spot-on. We kicked off with his the Hungarian Goulash, just outstanding on a cold night like tonight. After this we had Deviled Eggs, Butcher Balls (hands down, the moistest meatballs we've ever had!), and Crispy Brussels Sprouts. Each Dish was better than the last. Dining on the patio was exceptional, just a great little spot. We genuinely can't wait to come back and bring all of our friends and family. I posted a year ago about how much we loved this place. Last nights experience was the worst imaginable. Firstly the menu has changed, loads of fish additions????very expensive, we should have left immediately when I realise there are two staffers...one chef and one waitress, on a Saturday night. Before enters we ordered the Brussels sprouts. Then we ordered our mains. A wedge salad, beet salad with a 5 oz New york steak and del monico steak as we couldn't find the Steak frites from the old menu. After waiting 10 minutes my daughter got her wedge salad with a tiny bowl of sprouts, what?? Ten minutes later I got my beet salad with six little pieces of meat on it. We then asked the waitress why we did not get the large plate of really wonderful charred sprouts which we usually share, she said she thought we ordered a side dish! Before ordering our meals?? Ten minutes later, after we had finished eating our food,my granddaughter, who was the hungriest, finally got her steak . A sad small piece of meat and the waitress had to ask if she wanted fries. I had two glasses of Cabernet. The bill was $125 before tip ! Don't know what happened to this place, but stay away now has mediocre food, terrible service and outrageous prices. read more

Let's have a real review and chat shall we; I and two of my mates stopped in because a while back we heard good things especially being that this was supposed to have been a steakhouse/local eatery. What we walked into was nothing more than a convoluted mess. For starters, there was only one server for about close to 30 people that were at this establishment. Only one person working the bar in which we also found out was the person cooking the food. Needless to say that service was very slow based on one person trying to handle all of the different tables. The server himself was trying his best so it could not be held against him. The restaurant should have had more than one server that night. As far as the atmosphere, it was mediocre. It had a terrace to dine outside which was fine minus the reused metal chairs that anyone could obviously see was shellaced to prevent further rusting on the chairs. Some of the table lights that they had were not working. And if it rained would not had been a proper place to be to have dinner. They had karaoke in which the female host was very bright and cheerful. The sound could have been better but it was fine. Most of the patrons for it we're okay except maybe for one individual who seen very inebriated and kept going around to everyone's tables like he was the host but being very annoying. But let's get back to the establishment at hand. The food was subpar. Here's a rundown; the roasted brussel sprouts hardly had any roasting to them. And some of them were inedible. The so-called wagyu sliders were tough and messy. Now, a word to the wise meaning this restaurant: stop calling certain steaks you have Delmonico style. I have eaten at the Delmonico's in New York. The steaks that you are trying to pass off such as the ribeye is nowhere close in comparison. One of my friends had the lobster in which case again a total mess. It almost seems like the lobster was fried. And just a rubbery mess. The oxtail that one of my other mates had that I took a taste of had absolutely no spark. Somewhat bland and it seems that the brown stew may have only been added on top of the oxtail at not cooked in it. Again we have been to places like St Catherine's and Montego Bay and have had oxtail there. No way this passes. Plus the rice and peas that came with it seemed to have been reheated the way they tasted. From some other reviews it has been said that this business was taken over by another owner and it very well seems that whatever style they're going for it's either not working or clashing with each other. I'd even have to agree that if this place is trying to be more of a Jamaican/caribbean restaurant, then they need to overhaul their entire food operation. Now at the end of the evening was the biggest joke. When we were getting ready to pay our bill, which of course took almost 20 minutes for the one server to get back to us, we were then told that the credit card machine was not working and that they could only accept cash or Apple pay or Google pay. Now, why would you not have said anything ahead of time meaning to either have something posted up or to let your customers know the situation ahead of time. One of my friends could have easily gone down the street to the ATM for themselves because we mostly only had credit cards. I do have Google pay but I also had cash. And when we did try to pay in cash was even a bigger joke because the cook/bartender had to then even ask a couple of her friends which were there if they had change so she could make change for us. Probably the most disorganized and unprepared part for any restaurant. How do you run a business and not know when you're not going to have enough money to make change or to keep stocked at a business? So here's the bottom line; the Butcher's Barrel may have been a very nice steakhouse maybe a couple of years ago. But technically you can no longer call it a true steakhouse. And you definitely cannot call it a good restaurant based on all of the mess that was happening there. Avoid with all worst intent. read more

Got the steak frite and it was cooked to perfection. Service was prompt and friendly. Ambiance was industrial with a good bit of echo which made conversation a bit difficult but not horrible. Really enjoyed my meal. read more

The combination of baking and deep frying created a delightful texture, while the homemade hot sauce added just the right amount of heat and flavor. Every bite was heavenly. The thin-cut fries on the side were another highlight. Lightly salted and wonderfully soft, they paired perfectly with the wings, adding to the overall experience. The lollipop lamb was nothing short of spectacular. The smoky flavor deeply penetrated the meat, creating a rich, mouth-watering taste. Seasoned to perfection, each bite was a flavor explosion. The pita and hummus on the side were the perfect complements to this dish, making it even more enjoyable. If you're looking for a place where every dish leaves a lasting impression, The Butcher's Barrel is it! Highly recommended. As for the service, except EXCELLENT customer service. The waiter/bartender was always making sure we were comfortable & enjoying the food. We did go early on a Saturday, so the ambiance was quiet and chill. It is definitely a casual place and inside was kind of smaller than what we expected but it was still comfortable enough for us. They also have outside seating if that's your thing. I was visiting in the area and went 45 mins before their closing time but the staff accepted me with a warm welcome and I received a prompt service. I ordered their lamb lollipops that came with hummus and warm pita. It was really delicious. The lamb was cooked perfect. There is parking right in front of the restaurant. Small space but you can sit indoors or out. The large open garage doors helps the space feel bigger. You can sit at the bar or tables. They have a good selection of beer and wine. The food is great. Came here twice and the first time was excellent! From service to food and ambiance. Our server had told us about a special menu they'd be offering the following week and told us to follow on their social media for updates. A few days later, We saw the menu she had mentioned on their IG. We asked in the post if menu would be offered on a certain day that week and they replied yes. So we made plans to go and brought along two more guests with us. When we arrived the server on this occasion did not offer the special menu to us and when we asked she didn't know what we were talking about. When I mentioned the post on IG she went back inside to inquire only to come back out and say sorry we're not offering it today. We decided to order other items since this changed our plans last minute and most of what we ordered came out pretty bad. Maybe it was an off night for them, but it left a sour taste in our mouth. We let our server know of our disappointment in our meals and each time they tried to rectify it there was little to no improvement. We probably would have declined it but there was also no offer of a comp dessert or anything to offset all the issues we experienced. I'm not still sure if we'd return. read more

I can turn into a real carnivore. I love the flavors of meat, being the meat itself, so other than salt and pepper, without sauces or other enhancements they may distract from the meat flavor. I also like it done rare, Pittsburgh style with a bloody red center. And I admit that now and then, with blood dripping from my lips I could be mistaken for a vampire. LOL! So, one evening when I caught myself hankering for some really tasty meat, I headed over to The Butcher's Barrel and darn glad I did. The Butcher's Barrel is way different in concept than a Capital Grille, a Morton's, or a Ruth Chris. It's a casual cross between a wine and beer bar, a meat market and a restaurant. I found it to be spotlessly clean, laid back, very informal with a simple but eye pleasing interior design. And though the floor is cement it's all rather comfy as everything extends out onto a rather pleasant patio dining area. The menu is rather small, but coupled with blackboard offerings more than adequate. In fact, with such board offerings as foie gras, stone crab, lobster roll, jambalaya as well as meats, also unique. For my meal I started off with a Caesar. Unfortunately, they were out of anchovy, but even without, tasty enough with a good crisp romaine. For my main, I ignored the board meat selections and went straight to the butcher's counter where I selected a great looking near pound of thick cut Mishma Reserve Wagyu, a wonderful meat totally rich in meat flavors and one not served anywhere else that I know about.  Though they don't have the high heat ovens to do a true Pittsburgh style, the did a wonderful charred sear that left a bloody red center, just the way I asked it to be done. And for this great cut at price of $25.84 represented a bargain. I might add that they do offer the real thing, A5 Wagyu, but at $130/pound; pero no soy un hombre tan rico. Overall, I really liked the The Butcher's Barrel with its wonderfully great unique meat, friendly staff and spacious seating. I'd read about this restaurant. And we had driven by it on the way to the nearby coffee shop last month. We decided to come for dinner as we were in the neighborhood. They've only been open a few months. The menus change as they are working out different dishes and seeing what is popular. Even with a different limited menu (than we'd seen online), we were able to find a couple items we wanted - and it wasn't easy choosing which to order. The prices are quite reasonable. This is the kind of place where it will be soon discovered. Or so we thought...because as we were there, every table and chair in the small restaurant was suddenly filled! Guess it's already been found. They only had two servers plus the chef/kitchen staff so the two gals were quite busy. There are 4 tables inside, and 10-12 chairs at the counter/bar. In addition, there are some larger tables out on the patio. The garage doors are open to the patio seating. Several patrons had brought their (well-behaved) dogs. Attached to the restaurant is another room with the butcher cases showing off meats (with prices), a wall of wines (some very decent prices for bottles, BTW), and on the other wall shelves of everything from olive oils to pasta, etc. Even if you aren't planning on buying a bottle of wine or a steak, make sure you browse through. We were going to order something "meaty", but as we were debating in front of the server, she told us that the crab cakes were excellent. So that is what we ordered along with a Caesar salad. We decided to share everything. The kitchen was a bit slow (they were slammed) and the chef even came out to apologize. We were hungry, but this is the kind of place where you feel comfortable just sitting. And everyone is so nice and friendly. The Caesar salad was good - with lots of thin shredded cheese on top - served with some mini bread sticks. The crab cakes were excellent --- no filler - and very tasty. At home, we tried their limoncello cake, which was light and airy and lemony. A good bit of a sweet ending, but not too heavy. This is a place we want to return to again. Soon. A group of eight of us dined at The Butcher's Barrel last week. We all agreed that this place is a real treasure and are planning another gathering together to continue exploring the awesome menu items. On this particular night several of us ordered the smoked prime rib. It was outstanding. Others had burgers, salads, and the burnt ends over mac n cheese. The table became very quiet as the group devoured everything on their plates and servings are generous! Ryan, our server, was off the chart WONDERFUL! He takes time to provide details about the menu, recommends wines to accompany the meal, has a warm, friendly spirit, and checks in throughout the dining experience. Not to be like the Russian judge for the Moscow figure skater at the Olympics, but these folks get my first 6-star rating across the board. Off-the-charts fantastic for food, service and ambience. They're also brand new, which makes it even more impressive that they were so perfect. Food was incredibly good. Saturdays and Sundays they have a limited menu with a bigger range of choices on weekdays. I broke my "maximum one red meat per month" rule and got a grilled steak. This was Smith and Wollensky's quality at a tiny fraction of the price. The corn chowder starter was incredible too. It's a combination butcher shop, wine shop, bar and cafe...a unique mixture that really, really works. Service is like the perfect neighborhood cafe from a movie. The friendly server also mans the bar. The man who grills your steak before your eyes on the outdoor grill also seems to be the owner. He even came by with the raw meats on platter to show them to us and get the thumbs up that these were OK before he went to the grill. The lady in the back chopping up things waves and says hello. Everyone there makes sure all is good multiple times. You can tell from the many regulars at the bar that this behavior is genuine, and not just because you're a new face. I was humming the "Cheers" theme song by the time we left. Ambience for the spot inside and out is also terrific. Inside there's polished concrete and open ceiling, nicely displayed wine bottles, an actual butcher counter and a slick bar. Outside you can sit under an overhang and watch the world drive by, walk by and come through on a train. It's in the new/old stretch of "downtown" Oakland Park next to the railroad, just south of City Hall. The neighborhood is a rapidly changing food/beverage hot spot, with Funky Buddha just north, Kith's Coffee south, Tatts & Tacos farther south and even a couple of long-time places like Big Dog Station. It is said to make $1 million in the restaurant business you need to start with $2 million. The Butcher's Barrel is an attempt to upgrade the "culinary district" of Oakland Park - and it needs the revival. The restaurant feels like a neighborhood bar and has plenty of outside seating. Inside it has decorative garage doors which can open and provide good air flow. The restaurant is designed with polished cement floors and is very bright and welcoming. There are some mouth watering offerings including short ribs, pork chops and goat cheese pecan truffles. The meats are generally served with polenta or mashed potatoes. There are some good wine and beer options including beer from Wynwood Brewing Company. Overall, I believe the Barrel is a work in progress as it addresses some opening kinks. What appears to be missing are any warm green vegetables (I know this is a butcher shop). Some spinach, carrots or broccoli would do the trick. Also, there were a few service hiccups including providing unclean utensils. These can be easily resolved. This place is worth a visit and a show of support for the Oakland Park culinary area. read more

Downtown Oakland Park is trending up and restaurants like Butcher's Barrel are leading the way. If you want some meat why not dine at a butcher? The concept seems to work.
