Ive been thinking long and hard about this review. I think that if a bank lacks the resources that BofA and Chase and Wells Fargo have that they can only differentiate themselves in one way and that's customer service. There are several people that I feel I get along with and I can work with, but I keep getting less than appealing service from tellers. Maybe Im just a needy client and as a business owner myself, I dont want to say that the customer is always right, because they arent in all situations. But I go out of my way to do the best I can whenever I can, and Im just not getting that feeling from Mechanics. I want to put this in perspective though, MB is far and above the customer service I got as a client of Chase. read more

Pathetic. A $500 mobile deposit limit for a year on new accounts?! Two things wrong here, why such a low limit and why for so long? Its insulting and renders this feature nearly unusable. Was not told about this when signing up for account, even when i said i will be depositing my paychecks thru the mobile app. Bank is not compatible with apple pay or google wallet...no, seriously they aren't. Mechanics Bank has been my bank for 7 years. They've been pretty good to me, give me personalized service, and recognize me even though I don't go inside much. There are branches in San Francisco, East Bay, North Bay, Sacramento and beyond. I like the feeling that I'm dealing with a small business, even though they're healthy and growing. And despite their small size, you won't get penalized by a lack of ATM's since they rebate the fees other banks charge you. I'm a big fan of their online banking. When both my personal and business checks were stolen, they bent over backwards to help me and didn't even charge me for new checks. I would have given them five stars, but when I was trying to get Earthlink from ripping me off, they weren't as responsive as usual. Every other matter I've brought to them, they've been stellar. And I can't say that about any other bank. These people give you the benefit of the doubt, and have taken my word on things that other banks would have demanded proof to rebate a disputed charge. This is one of the few banks that actually has demonstrable customer service. read more

Paid my car payment a day early but I guess I had turned on autopay and they tried to take another payment the following day. Payment was returned and got a 20.00 fee. Called customer care and they said couldn't help me and that they would have taken two payments. So I'll be refinancing loan with a different lender. read more

Mechanics Bank is AMAZING!!!!!! I've been with them for over 5 years now and have never actually liked a bank until coming here. The staff takes the time to get to know you and they treat you like a human being, not a number. I've yet to be assessed random fees (like Wells Fargo always managed to do) and I've never had a problem with them. Mechanics Bank also donates to local organizations and is very community minded. For too many years to count I was a customer of one of the two major San Francisco-based banks. I finally switched to Mechanics Bank over a year ago, and I couldn't be happier. I wished I'd done it years earlier! I'll echo the positive points noted below: personal service (unsurpassed!); free use of other banks' ATMs (the fees are collected and reimbursed around the 1st of the following month); good telephone service staffed by folks just a few miles -- not a few time zones -- away. And I appreciate the good feeling you get inside, knowing you belong to a local (East Bay) bank that's managed to remain independent for over 100 years. As to the complaints below about Mechanics' website, it's been completely revamped and they are no longer applicable. I pay all my bills through it -- there's even a feature that shows you your current balance on all your cards, including your mortgage! (A bit depressing, I know, but at least the number decreases every month.) Mechanics also features PopMoney, a system that allows you to send money directly to other people's bank accounts -- they don't have to move the funds themselves, as is necessary with PayPal, for example. Only downside: as a reviewer below pointed out, it does take a bit too long for them to transfer funds abroad, and especially to cash a foreign check. But now I just use PayPal for that. Nice irony: back in the 80s and early 90s I banked with Security Pacific, whose motto -- "We want to be your bank for life!" -- was sadly traduced when they were swallowed up by Bank of America. My Mechanics Bank branch on Shattuck is in the very same location as my old SecPac branch. So maybe the motto holds after all! read more

This bank is terrible. We have had nothing but problems with them. We've had to call every month for issues such as an account login magically doesn't work anymore, no notification if a payment doesn't go through (no email, no voicemail) they call you with a 855 # and WILL NOT leave a voicemail. It's 2021. Who one earth answers random 855 #'s. No one. There's way too much spam out there these days. To conclude this message... avoid this bank if you can. read more

I was purchasing a car from a private party, the car had a lien holder, the Mechanics Bank. The seller and I paid off the loan to take the lien holder's name off. The bank had no problem clearing the check on next day, yet waited for 10 days to send electronic notification to DMV. I was also told electronic notification works immediately, so i waited until the electronic notifcation was sent to DMV, i called the bank and confirmed it, then i went to DMV, thinking that i can finally get it over with. As it turned out, DMV's system said the car still has the lien holder. After consulting with DMV, they said after electronic notification is received, it'll take 8 days to process . So, on the 10th day after the car loan is paid off, i still have all the DMV paperwork, waiting to be submitted. I'm very frustrated and disappointed at the slow service of loan department. I've also made a lot of calls to Mechanics Banks, and was promised to be called back but it rarely happens. Do i have to have an account to get good customer service here? read more

I have been a customer at Rabobank at Riverpark in Fresno for about 15 years. Recently, it was bought out by Mechanics. I started a new job, with a new direct deposit. After about three months, they decided to begin holding my check- to make sure it cleared- for ten days. Three times they did this. Finally, I call the bank manager, who tells me if I don't like how this bank does business, she would suggest I bank somewhere else. As soon as the pandemic is over, and I can get in there when the bank is open, this is soooooo DONE. read more

I'll start with the overall service of Mechanics Bank. They are a small bank mostly localized around the Bay Area. As such, they've had (and still have) some things to figure out. For example, it used to be that they would dispense cash from their ATMs before giving your card back, which led to forgetting to grab your card after getting what you're after (your cash) either because you're used to how other banks do it (give card back first, or before you even start your transaction or give your card back before cash is dispensed), or you just take the money and run (usually if you've been out having a few drinks), but they've fixed this issue. An issue they still have is putting a hold on your card or outright cancelling it if they see something fishy (potential fraud or activity in a place far from your home bank), without a text message or a phone call to alert or ask first. It's quite frustrating. The cards' magnetic strips and chips seemingly wear down easily and have to be replaced more often than you'd think they should, so they've gotta fix that as well. BUT their customer service when dealing with both of these issues is fast, friendly, and helpful. Cheers to you for that! They have multiple options for banking, but will deduct fees, if that is the option you've chosen, again without warning, although around the same of each month. Further, if you have an issue that needs to be resolved in person, you're usually required to go to the branch you opened the account in. Not sure if that is standard for most banks. For all of these reasons I've taken away one star. I have been happy with the bank overall though. They refund ATM fees if you use an ATM that is not theirs and I think that's huge! They are rarely busy if you go into any branch and they are always pleasant and helpful. And finally, I want to give a shoutout to the branch manager in Albany, Jason. Jason is the best! He has helped me out on a few different occasions where I thought I might be in a jam. He is kind, understanding, professional, and really knows what he's doing. He is the reason I opened an account back up after a hiatus with the bank. Of course, his staff reflect this in every way and it needs to be said that they are all very much appreciated. I believe he manages both the Albany and El Cerrito branches, but is based out of Albany. Go see him!! I am hoping that Mechanics Bank expands into Portland, where I recently moved to, but I've not had any issues being so far away from my home branch. So far, so good. Edit 5/20/15 Wow! The area manager, Grant Shoef, called me on 5/19 to address all of the points in my original review below. He was lovely, and genuinely concerned and gave explanations, solutions, and apologies. It seems that sole proprietors like me are in somewhat of a business limbo. Even though I'm a business, as a sole proprietor my banking needs are more of the personal type. And guess what? Without changing any account numbers or cards or really anything at all, my business account can be switched to be handled as a personal account. Which means I will be able to use the mobile app to deposit checks, and access all account info (like account numbers!) online. If this actually works out, I'll add a fourth star. Grant also addressed the issue of the surly teller and the change in culture at the Shattuck branch over the past couple of years. I give him five stars for this, but overall can't give it to the branch just yet. Stay tuned... --------------------- 5/15/15 This review is based on my experience as a business account holder. The only info specific to this branch is at the very end. They get one star because that's the lowest you can give. I figure one for some of the nice people, zero for each of the bullet points below. Back when everything went to hell in the financial market I switched from Bank of America to Mechanics Bank because I wanted to go local. I'm (mostly) pleased with their human interactions, but their systems are awful. 1- Only personal account holders have the ability to deposit checks via smart phone. I often travel for work and have to mail in my account deposits (and don't get a deposit slip). Wouldn't it make more sense to offer this service to entrepreneurs/contractors/small business owners rather than the people who likely already have their pay come in via direct deposit? 2- The online system is a nightmare. Some small improvements have been made over the years, but it's still a disaster. Finding past statements- sometimes I can, sometimes I can't. Which leads me to... 3- I'm all paperless, so I should be able to find my account numbers online, right? No. Again only personal account holders can see their account numbers online. For "security purposes" business account numbers aren't accessible anywhere online. Wait, what? 4- This is what lead me to write this review. I called in to find out my account numbers because I need them for a rental application and don't have all of my original paperwork for both accounts readily handy. I had to wait 25 minutes before someone came on the line to access them for me. As a business owner/entrepreneur every minute is money and to lose almost half an hour on hold just to find out my account number (for the ridiculous reasons stated above). Now about this Shattuck Ave branch. Originally all of the folks working there were friendly, and greeted me with a smile- and often remembered my name. It was lovely and was worth dealing with all of the above. In the past two years, the staff has changed significantly and now the tellers hardly even greet me with eye contact. There is one woman in particular who has been there the entire time that I have been banking there who I go to such lengths to avoid that I let people go before me. They haven't the slightest idea what the words customer service mean. My card won't work online and I get a canned answer about "it looks fine in my system" but that doesn't help me buy what I need if the vendors won't accept my card. The worst is when I purchase from amazon, they place a preauthorization, then charge me but the preauthorization remains for about a week. Therefore I have to have double the money for a week it buy anything from amazon. I ask them about it and they blame amazon for not releasing the preauthorization, I point that they are the only bank that does this, everyone else releases the preauthorization automatically when the charge goes through. I didn't sign up with these morons, they took over my bank. I will be shopping for a less crooked bank in my area. Hope they go out of business soon and are taken over by a decent bank. read more

I don't generally write reviews, but I used yelp when moving to the area to help me decide on where to do my banking so I wanted to contribute. The staff here are very friendly and the woman, Jamie, who helped me set up my account was very knowledgable and helpful, allowing me to get a no-charge checking account for two months while I set up a direct deposit with my new job. However, I've been very disappointed at how long it's taken to process deposits and receive my ATM card and with their online banking system. I waited for over two weeks for my first check to clear (which I need for rent) and close to two weeks for my ATM card to arrive in the mail. Meanwhile, I was stranded with only my credit card because I re-located from the East Coast and was attempting to close my previous account. The online banking system is straightforward, but the transactions record isn't always very clear (it noted my large deposit as a withdrawal although the money was deposited in my account) and when you do an online transfer it doesn't update the amount immediately which I prefer. One plus is they have free parking out back...I appreciate that it's a local business which is why I chose Mechanics, but I'm not sure I would make the same choice again. read more

My husband and I have been with what is now Mechanics Bank for over 20 years, back to when it was Butte Community Bank. When Mechanics Bank took over, it has been awful. First when they took over, we couldn't access our accounts for over a week. You would get a message to call a number for assistance to access your account online, but when you called that number, you'd be on hold for some time and then a recording would come on telling you they had too many callers and leave your number and they would get back to you the business day. I did that multiple times and never got a call. It wasn't until I posted a bad review on their Facebook page that someone actually called me. Then, about a week ago, my husband and I were traveling back from our home in Idaho, which we do every couple of weeks. Never had a problem before, but this time they froze our accounts when we tried to purchase fuel for our vehicles. I looked at my phone and saw a text message indicating that I should type "Yes" if it was a legit purchase and "No" if it was fraud. I typed yes and was able to get fuel. The very next day, the day before Thanksgiving, we were shopping at Safeway and had a bill close to $300...we tried four different debit cards and everything was denied. Fortunately, I had checks in my purse to my business account. When I got to the car, I tried to call the number that was associated with the text messages and got recordings every time to "try again" because the account was the wrong account. It was a nightmare. Then we went to the bank and my husband spent over a half hour dealing with it because I got fed up and walked to Raley's to do our shopping. The teller that was helping us kept telling us that there was no record in the system that we had tried to use our cards at Safeway as if we were lying about it. Remember George Bailey's bank in It's a Wonderful Life? This is basically them in real life. These folks re-invest in the local community, they'll call you if a check might be in risk of bouncing (instead of just gleefully charging you fees). They even knew my name by sight when I'd walk into the local branch for the first couple years I was with them. They also give money over to modern day Mr Potters - Wells Fargo, BoA, etc- albeit intentionally as full ATM rebates to you when you have to use those jerks' ATMs. I've since moved to Southern California, but still use them. There are a few challenges with that, but well worth the effort to avoid the alternative. I started with them in '03- far too early for National Bank Transfer Day on 2011, but I did manage to participate in that too by ditching my BoA credit card and starting one with Mechanics Bank. I don't know what's with the other poor reviews. Probably just managers at larger non-local banks pissed off that their rip-the-customer-off business model falls short of this establishment. read more

Went to cash a check at Mechanics bank at Hilltop. I cash the same check every other week at this branch, San Pablo, or Pinole Valley. I do not have an account here, but the check is a personal check from a Mechanics bank account holder, and it is for $100.00 every time. Recently, they've made changes to their check cashing policies including the most recent change where the fee went from $5.00 to $6.00, to cash a check that is over $100.00. I am never charged this fee because the check is for $100.00, and the policy states the fee is to be applied whenever the value of the check is OVER $100.00. Today, the Hilltop branch told me I cannot cash this check unless they collect the $6.00 fee. I calmly tried to explain that I am aware of, and clearly understand the policies they have in place, however they do not apply to me in this particular situation. The teller asks for assistance, I'm assuming from a manager, who approaches without introducing herself, or having a name tag. The two of them discuss the issue in Spanish, for about 3-4 minutes. The assumed manager lady then asks me how many times I've been in that branch within the past 3 months, to cash one of these checks...I didn't have an exact number for her, but I tried, I'm thinking 2 checks per month × 3 months...that's 6 possible times. So, I said at least twice. Instead of using that time to pull up the policy on the computer, for the win..she had the teller doing a search to basically answer her own question. She got very excited and said "Ha! There's no record of you ever cashing a check here, and unless you agree to the fee, you won't be cashing here today either." I asked to speak to the manager, and she leaned toward the safety glass partition and quietly said "that would be Me." I was beside myself, how unprofessional, blatantly rude, and disrespectful. I then went to the San Pablo branch, and I had to explain why the check was already endorsed by me and all the info was written on it by the other teller at Hilltop, but I decided to come there instead. She asked what happened, and for my own personal gratification, I said, "Humor me for a sec, how about I tell you what happened in about 2 minutes" (about the time it would take for her to explain any fees I would be charged) About 1 minute goes by, and she asked me, "Please don't tell me they tried to charge you to cash this check!" As she's counting out one hundred dollars in 20's and sliding it under the glass to me. The lady at hilltop, the really rude one, isn't even the manager!! She lied!! She may be a supervisor of something, but she's definitely NOT the manager. I felt disrespected once they started discussing me and my issue in Spanish, especially when I realized that that is when she was telling the young lady helping me, to look up the history of the last 3 months, and that if they don't match, my answer and her search results, then refuse to help me at all. Basically, excersising their right to refuse service to anyone. I went to take the check and my driver's license back off of the desk, and the fake manager slapped her fingers down on them. Right? I was saying to myself "not today Satan". She looked up at me and immediately let go of my stuff. Which was the best decision she could make at that moment, for all of our sakes. End result: cashed the check with no problem at the other branch. No fee was charged. read more

Minus 3 stars for teller named Daniel who was extremely rude. I Will not be helped or rather get no help from him again! Did not want to cash my check because to him it was too much. Kept saying it was too much money and why I was getting so much even after I explained it was my payroll check. Even if u do have questions...There are more polite ways to ask. Made me feel like I was giving him a fake check when he could have just looked at history and seen the previous checks. I Felt completely disrespected. I am soo pleased with Mechanics Bank in Berkeley! I have been with this bank for 11 years and have only had really good experiences. They hire very smart and cordial, down to earth folks. I cannot remember the names of all the amazing staff, but here are a few - Dan, Melanie and Francisco. Not only does my checking account come with all ATM fees reimbursed, but I also have a line of credit that acts as overdraft protection. The staff here have worked with me to answer all my questions, and have called me when there is a serious issue like a lost bank card. They actually care and will take the extra step to make sure you are taken care of. HIGHLY recommend! read more

I appreciate MB's diligence in discovering and stopping fraudulent charges using the debit card numbers for my wife and myself. Swift action prevented any losses in my account. The "Fraud Division" was expert in this "save", and then GHINWA TARABEY at MB's Stockdale Ave office in Bakersfield proceeded to order new cards and set up new "account online" sign in codes. We have banked at the Stockdale branch for more than six years, and are pleased that MB continues a tradition of professionalism, courtesy, and extra care started by its predecessor in interest, Rabobank. read more

I like to call it "The Money Store" because that's what it is. Yelp doesn't list my little branch on Hearst St. in Berkeley but that's the one I go to. These girls are hard as hell and LOYAL because they stay there, even though they've been stuck up a bunch of times. I always look for terror in their eyes but instead I find kindness and compassion. Mechanics is also the shit because they never over-loaned and decided AGAINST taking TARP bailout money. That's some integrity (for a bank). Finally!! I looked everywhere in the Bay Area for foreign money exchange place that didn't require you to have an account. After a long search I finally found that the Mechanics Bank in Downtown Berkeley has a currency exchange inside and they'll help everyone. You don't have to have an account! And it's right near the BART station. I really only travel to Europe, but they had Euros on hand and they said they could get most currencies they don't have on hand in a couple of days. I used to tell all my friends to sign up with Mechanics Bank when I hear them complain about their banks. But now I've had two unpleasant experiences in a row, I'm definitely going to stop giving them glowing reviews. About a month ago I went to the MechBank in downtown Berkeley to deposit some cash. I had to go inside instead of doing it at the ATM because my bank card had expired. There were two tellers actively helping two customers, and behind those two customers were four others and then I was the 5th in line. Besides the two tellers, there were three other employees behind the counter counting money, and three others sitting at the desks opposite the tellers in the open space area. I was in a bit of a hurry and the line wasn't moving, but I was resigned, it was my own fault for not having my new card with me. So I waited... and waited... two more customers came in and now the line is seven deep. I could hear people starting to breath heavier, or maybe it was just me, but the line wasn't moving at all. I kept hoping one of the three money counting employees would open up a new line, but NO. I was hoping the two dudes and the gal sitting at the desks would notice the line that's now eight deep fidgeting and come to help out, but NO. Really, I've seen better customer service at BofA and Albertsons! Was that just an off day at my bank? I had hoped so, which was why I didn't have the heart to write a negative review right after it happened when I was fuming. Mechanks Bank, if you are reading, please note that people waiting in line for almost 25 minutes (which was about how long I was waiting) have nothing better to do than think about how long and miserable the wait is, and they're definitely not happy to see employees who *could* be helping them pretending like they're busy and not making eye contact. I have no complaints about the service at the counter once I got there, but daaaang, is it so hard to redirect a couple of employees to help out when the line's getting long? My second unpleasant experience happened this morning when I had to call and speak with someone in customer service. I don't need (or like) people to fawn over me, but she was just totally curt, made me feel like I was bothering her by calling and she was doing me a favor by answering my call. Sheesh. Worst bank ever. I spoke with a woman named Sonya, i told her i needed to cash a check but was an hour away, and would be ten minutes late. She said it would be fine, just get there by 5:10. I arrived right at 5:10, but the door was locked, i stood there ringing the door bell and knocking on the door for ten minutes until a guy comes to the door and tells me i was too late. I tried to reason with him, telling him i spoke with Sonya, but he refused to cash my check, saying i was too late. Worst bank ever. Do not ever go here, bank somewhere else. read more

He read my extremely angry review here, and called me to apologise profusely. As this is the one and only time I have been treated in such a way at the bank, I have decided to change my review. I plan on speaking to Mr. Shoaf the next time I go into the bank, and have some policies explained more clearly by a respectful adult person. I recently left one of the big banks downtown with the hope of supporting a small local bank. But every few weeks I continue to be highly disappointed with Mechanics Bank. 1) On those days when I need to speak with a Teller, more times than not I've got an unreasonably long wait (15 minutes). Last week there was 1 Teller working behind the desk at lunchtime. 2) When I make a deposit at their ATM it often takes days to post to my account. 3) It seems like half the time I try to log onto their website their site is down, and their Customer Service person can never give me any kind of idea when it will be up again.
