Wells Fargo is not everyone's most-loved institution. People balk at weird Wells charges and wonder why deposits earn only pennies in interest. Despite all the bad karma, I've been a Wells customer for decades, going along for the ride with minimal complaints. In recent (COVID) times, Wells has served me in the following ways: They had a big jug of hand sanitizer at the entrance. I'd pass by every Saturday on my way back from the Berkeley Farmers' Market to nuke the virus particles on my fingertips. They gave me a stack of paper check registers. Yes, I actually write some checks (two or three per month these days) and record transactions in a hand-written register. (This is so very last-century, sorry.) They sold me rolls of quarters that someone close to me needed for laundry operations. They produced a notary (Antoinette) when a document needed to be notarized. Thus Wells has been pretty good overall. On the other hand, I dislike the fact that they charge me a $16 wire fee whenever someone outside the country sends me money in a non-optimal way. After I phoned Wells to voice my displeasure about two such charges in early April, I was granted a $12 "partial wire trans svc charge reversal" but was told that there was no guarantee that I'd receive such dispensation in the future. My reply on the phone was that there'd be no guarantee that I'd remain a customer in the future. Two months later, here I am--still a customer. read more

I came in to get a temporary debit card because mine was shut down due to fraud. Daniela T. was so helpful! I took probably 5-10 minutes to get my card. I've been using this bank for 20 years. In all that time, I have always been treated with the utmost professionalism and courtesy. There has never been a single time when they haven't had more tellers step up if the line gets too long. Even the security guard opens the door for me sometimes. Wow. this is the fanciest Wells Fargo ever. Its in an old palatial building with beautiful architecture. When you walk into the entry way you look up at the sky-high embossed ceilings and you feel like your in an old, revered financial institution. Then you are greeted by one of many quite attractive employees. Seriously, all the girls are hot and all the guys are young and handsome. I guess that's how finances are run these days... There is a large group of employees waiting to greet you and direct you to whatever service you need. The service is quick and extremely friendly (maybe because they're all so satisfied with being so hot, I don't know). It's just nice to be a Wells Fargo customer, in general, because when every one else's bank got screwed, I was in good shape because Wells is FDIC insured. So, come to my beautiful bank full of beautiful bankers and submit or take out some mooooolah in a quick and efficient fashion. read more

The branch is in the middle of downtown Berkeley. Very close to public transportation options, stores, UC Berkeley, and within walking distances for local residents. I frequent this location a few times a month either by the ATM or inside the branch to drop off a mortgage payment or handel my banking needs. The staff is gracious and have excellent customer service that some other banks lack. I totally forgot to mention that this branch is super fancy! Am sure it has to be to one of the original locations. The architecture and building itself is gorgeous! read more

Best customer service out of all the big banks. I've been with a few of the big banks (i.e. BoA, Chase, etc) and Wells Fargo has by far been the most customer-oriented and friendly. This location in particular has an extremely attentive and helpful staff. As a college student with a not-so-impressive checking account, I have been treated poorly and even with disdain by several bankers at other locations. However, the staff here has always been eager to answer even the silliest of question involving personal finance. I have always had my phone calls answered promptly throughout all hours of the work day and the receptionist was always friendly and helpful. Long story short: the building is beautiful and the staff is friendly. What's not to like? read more

Regardless of what you think of the service at any one branch, remember that most of your interactions will be online or over the phone (i.e. VM hell.) Their online services are the most primitive of any bank I've used. I had transactions such as transfers apparently go through and then simply not be registered. When calling to report this they've recommended that I call them to do these transaction instead! And the interface looks slick but is incredibly difficult to navigate. Any phone call is a minimum of 30 minutes of your life. Each department (e.g. checking, home equity, online banking) is ignorant of the most basic functions in the other department so you're constantly being transferred to another department. No one can see your pending transactions but you, so don't bother calling up about them if they appear to be in error. Add to this that there is padding for basic services. For example, if you want to set up an inter-bank transfer, that transfer will take a minimum of 3 business days. There's an option for next day delivery but it costs you $10 for any amount over $500 and you must 'qualify' for that. If I didn't have my mortgage with them I would not be banking with them. read more

It's not so much this branch it's their foray into services they have no business to be in such as Payroll and credit card processing. Besides having little to no training, outright lying to customers, they have no clue. Banks these days are only interested in generating fees and not banking. These side businesses seem very lucrative to the banks but they are ill prepared and utterly incompetent. I recommend that if you need services like payroll and credit card processing, you go to a company whose main business is just that and avoid banks like Wells Fargo at all cost. I was a wells fargo customer for 4 years, and knew they charged a lot in fees for basic banking transactions, but i felt the good customer service was worth the extra few bucks. NOT ANY MORE. there was an error made to my account, and the manager at this branch was absolutely no help. the wells fargo home loan office in another part of berkeley was AWESOME in helping out even tho they dont even do basic banking, but this branch, was HORRIBLE at customer service. Eventually I got the problem fixed (I had to call a 1 - 800 number and talk to a computer for 20 minutes, then finally got someone on the phone who said the branch manager at the bank could have fixed the problem and they were really sorry for the banks mess up). The biggest problem I have with this branch is NOT that they wouldnt fix my banking concern (i understand not everyone can be made happy, and some things are beyond someones control). MY BIGGEST ISSUE WITH THIS BRANCH IS THAT THEY STRAIGHT UP DID NOT CARE ABOUT ME AS A CUSTOMER. the tellers were cool, the manager had no people skills and showed no concern for my problem. When I moved to Berkeley, I decided to open a checking account at this branch. In order to do so, I was told that I needed to open a savings account as well, a mere formality, and that all I'd need to open that savings was $100. In addition, I was told that if I put a certain amount of money into another liquid CD account, I wouldn't be charged a monthly fee for having a checking account. Since all this met my minimum requirements - that is, I do not keep my money in banks that charge me monthly fees because the point is to SAVE money, not LOSE it - I opened an account. Months later I received a notice that my savings account had been charged a number of penalties, and as a result I was $35 overdrawn, so they'd taken that money out of my checking account! I called the bank to find out what was going on, and they revealed to me that the $100 savings account I'd opened required me to keep a minimum balance of $3,500 in it, and that's why they'd taken my money. I explained that I'd been under the impression that there was no penalty or minimum fee, and they said they were sorry, but this policy had been disclosed in the fine print of the pamphlets they gave me, even if they hadn't disclosed the policy verbally. After 2 hours on the phone I managed to get some of my money back, but because Wells Fargo pulled these tricks, I will never trust them with my money again and tomorrow I will move all of my funds to a local community credit union. I should have done that in the first place. Wells Fargo also sends me tons of junk about buying life insurance and getting free credit checks. I really do believe they try to scam people out of their savings. read more

Visiting the bank has sadly never been an exhilarating experience for me. Usually it's to do something tedious, so I'm not sure by what criteria I can judge going to the bank. I've never had a bad experience at this bank. My best time here was trying to get money from a random foreign bill that I found in an apartment I moved in to. The previous tenant had nicely left a bunch of crap and garbage including an indecipherable foreign bill. I brought it into this Wells Fargo because they are huge and looked like they could figure out what country it was from. The bill had a big number on it, like 200 or 300 or something around there, so I had hope that maybe it would have the same exchange rate as pesos and I would then have 20/30 bucks to buy some food with. The poor teller was dumbfounded by my little treasure. She and her boss spent a good 15 minutes flipping through a big book with pictures of paper bills from all over the world and finally found that it came from Thailand I think, I don't remember. My "Where In The World Is Carmen Sandiego?" experience at Wells Fargo had an anti-climatic ending. The foreign bill with big numbers ended up being worth 2 bucks. read more

What a great location! I love the feel of a classic looking bank like this one. It has a great atmosphere, it's bright, has welcoming staff by the door, marble looking walls and counters, and everyone was smiling. How nice! I came here looking to sign up for a new account and was greeted and taken care of immediately. The gentleman who helped me set up my account was helpful in answering my questions, addressing my needs for my account, was professional, friendly, and very helpful. Full disclosure: I do not do my normal banking at Wells Fargo, only visit them once/twice a month for some limited activity. My review is about this specific Wells Fargo branch, and not Wells Fargo as a financial institution. Firstly, it's a bank and not just any bank - it's a really old building, with giant ceilings and classical architecture throughout, so it has a great "classic" bank feel (think "It's A Wonderful Life"). As soon as you walk in, you are greeted by a personal banker who helps direct you to the correct area (be it the general teller line, merchant window or the PB area for new accounts and the like). One thing about the bank that kind of bugs me is the scale of everything inside is made to make you feel smaller. The counters a very high, the partition walls really isolate the main customer area from all of the other parts of the bank and give it an institution-like feel. The tellers have always been cordial, but not overly friendly (unless they are trying to up-market you some new product, then they put on their "Insanely-Too-Chipper" voice). It seems as if the allocation of workers is not balanced at this branch and by that I mean, there are only ever a few tellers working the windows but there are constantly managers/assistant mangers working right behind them or walking the floor. The management-to-grunts ratio seems really off to me, but that just might be Wells Fargo's business model, so it's possible this imbalance was on purpose. Overall, for the minimal work that I do via Wells Fargo, this branch has always been able to assist me, perhaps not as quickly and with the same friendliness as my normal bank, but that could just be because I don't bank here enough to create the same customer-business relationship I have at other banks. (Conversely, perhaps if they were friendlier to me I'd do more business there, so hard to say). read more

I've had good experiences whenever I've needed to come to this bank. This isn't the bank that I normally come to but when I am in the downtown Berkeley area I'll come here. The bank has a vintage feeling to it, the inside of the bank is very nice. High ceilings, clean, marble everywhere. The staff here are all really nice and really helpful. Someone here will always ask if you are in need of anything as soon as you walk in which is nice. There is rarely a line here and on the rare of occasion that there is a line, it moves quickly. I've meet with servers bankers here and it is always a great experience. They are very professional, helpful and always go into great detail when it comes to money. You always feel that they take their time with you, even if they have an appointment. Definitely recommend coming here if you are a Wells Fargo customer. read more

I had a very negative experience with a Wells Fargo teller. Below is the message I was going to write to them but ended up calling the customer care service who reported the situation to the district manager. Dear Sir/Madam, I am writing with regard to a very negative experience I had with a bank teller in your branch (2144 Shattuck Avenue) today at around 10:30 a.m. His name is Mohammed Hossain. My family and I have had a long banking relationship with Wells Fargo. My parents have looked to Wells Fargo for their banking needs all their lives, and Wells Fargo is the only bank I have had an account with ever since I set up my first bank account in 2007 with my mom. Prior to today I have had only positive experiences with Wells Fargo, and I had always planned to use Wells Fargo as my primary financial institution both for banking and credit needs, and possibly even for my future mortgage/etc. needs. (I have had numerous attractive offers from other banks in the past, including a $500 cash offer from Chase to switch my checking and savings account to them, but I've always ignored these offers because I appreciate what a great bank Wells Fargo has been for me and my family.) The experience I had today, which has been hands-down my worst ever experience in a financial institution, has given me pause with regard to my relationship with Wells Fargo. From the moment I began my conversation with Mr. Hossain, he repeatedly made comments about my workout routine, such as "what's for workout today" and "you should work on your arm strength". I did not start the conversation and wondered how he knew I even worked out. These comments eventually turned into comments about my weight, e.g. "you should do pull-ups" and "pull-ups will be easier once you lose some weight". (For most of my life I have worked out for 2 hours almost everyday, and this was really the first time in my life that someone has ever insinuated that I needed to lose weight.) The teller in the next cubicle witnessed it. I did not know what to make of this experience, i.e. whether he was trying to sexually harass me or whether he was simply a misogynist and thought that all women should have really skinny frames, and I came home crying. In any case, these comments were highly unprofessional and extremely hurtful. As I mentioned above, I have had nothing but great experiences with Wells Fargo all my life. Nonetheless, until this matter is resolved, I will definitely recommend that my friends and family stay away from this branch, and I will also leave an appropriate review on Yelp. I've been using Wells Fargo forever now and we've had our ups and downs. I must say this is the best Wells Fargo location I have ever been to. The bank is huge with many many tellers. There are also about 6-8 ATMS outside, very convenient. Every time I have come to this location I have always had friendly tellers who were quick and very nice. I've rarely had to wait in line, also a plus. I haven't had any issues with Wells Fargo as a bank in a long time either. The location is great, right off of BART. read more

On the phone they told me that they validate parking at the center st garage yet when I came in after 5 because the garage has different policy after 5 they would not cover my parking. The people answering the phones didn't have this info and the manager claimed she couldn't do anything. It was wells fargos mistake not mine and show poor managerial staffing. I went to buy foreign currency (Euros). The branch is directly outside the Center Street exit of Downtown Berkeley BART, which is extremely convenient. I had to wait about five minutes because the only currency exchange clerk was on a break. He didn't have a lot of small bills, so he ended up hustling me into buying €15 more than I wanted to buy. Also, he didn't tell me the exchange rate initially, and I ended up paying about $0.07 more per Euro than what was listed on XE.com. Ultimately, this transaction was the most convenient for my situation, but I left feeling a little bit played. read more

Just there. Was asked about my account closing and shared with supervisor and customer service rep, how we have decided to switch our accounts to another bank, because of consistently poor service both on-line and in (many) branches we've been in. *One of our favorite moments was at the Solano Branch, sitting down for a scheduled meeting with a banker when he abruptly stopped us and asked if we could come back in half an hour (we stupidly said yes, until we realized the crappy service that just happened and didn't return lol). Today, I was just there to get a roll of quarters. (that's uh just $10.00) and wasn't trying to go out of my way to complain (they asked and I shared). Get home to a voice mail telling me they hadn't completed the transaction and need me to come back down. Huh, as I was saying, their customer service.. um, yeah. no. (Geez, and I had thought they were calling about the conversation or how they could get our business back, or something). Oh, and by the way, I've worked in customer service for years, I've been on that side of the desk, I aint trying to bitch unless it's really bad (it has to be really bad for me to write on Yelp,really). Well Fargo, from on-line balance suspect accounting (pending transactions one day, gone the next and then back again, noticed this a lot with this company), to live customer service has been consistently poor. Do you think I'll be calling them back anytime soon today?
